Trade deadline: The Mets will get something done here

David Lennon reports on his blog that the Mets are working hard to acquire a reliever before the trade deadline. I think they'll find someone. Luis Ayala, as Jon Heyman reports? That would make sense, although if you look at his numbers, they haven't been very good this year.

Other last-minute predictions:

Jason Bay to Tampa Bay
Raul Ibanez to Toronto
The Red Sox get a reliever, but keep Manny.

Stay tuned...

come on Ken, no one can take anything you say seriously after that article this morning.

Complaining about getting Pudge? Farnsworth had been terrible for 2+ years. He has been booed by the fans and put down by the media. Now you want to defend him saying how valuable he is?

Give me break.

As a Yankee fan, I would have taken a new water cooler for the dugout in exchange for him. Getting Pudge is just a bonus

Jason Bay to the Rays..... good call Ken.

Griffey in 2008 is Mickey Mantle in 1968: 18 HRs, 54 RBIs and a .237 average. Mantle was smart enough to quit after that year and not make a fool of himself. Let's see what Griffey does. Today's typical player never has enough money. I'm betting that Griffey tries to get another contract that allows him to make millions more. Some team will surely be dumb enough to give it to him.

According to the NYT, the Star-Ledger of Newark might not be able to stay in business. It has to eliminate 20% of its workforce of 1,000 and get all sorts of trade union concessions. The newsroom would come in for a cut of 100 positions out of 330-350 employees in that area. No word on how this might curtail sports coverage.

Just heard on WFAN that Manny Ramirez has been trade to the Dodgers.

Yup. Ramirez to LA, Bay to Boston, 4 minor leaguers to Pitt. I love it. We get Ramirez out of Boston and the AL East. I'd rather deal with Bay and all his strikeouts. I also will love watching Torre deal with Manny. Oh, this is just great. I love it.

Gotta disagree, Jim. The Sox will be a better team with Bay, just as they were after the Nomah trade four years ago. Moreover, they now have their outfield set for next year too, and at a reasonable price.

Remember too the opportunity cost issue. The Rays don't get Bay, meaning that the Sox got rid of Manny and the Rays failed to upgrade via a trade.

Ken, I guess that LaRoche won't be rotting on the bench anymore, huh? Based on what I'm reading in the USAToday report, congratulations to Neal Huntington on another good trade!

With all these former Yankee and Red Sox prospects on the Pirates, attending a game there will feel like being at a Scranton-Pawtucket matchup.

Congrats to the talking-heads on ESPNews. Five hours on the trade deadline, four and a half of that devoted to Manny, and not one mention of him possibly going to the Dodgers.

Great predictions, KDog. Yikes.

Baileywalk, I am LMAO!!! Great post, dude!

Are we all in agreement that ESPN is pathetic? The only way their coverage could have been worse would have been if Eric "Souvenir City" Young had been able to offer his words of wisdom. The bosses should have Rob Neyer and Keith Law (and Ken Davidoff?) doing commentary, not jokers like Phillips and Olney.

Ramirez is a Yankee killer. It’s very good to have him out of the division. Period. Bay is signed for next year at $7.5 million. He will be 30 in Sept. He is having a nice year. Solid, but not great. Last year he batted .247 with a .418 SGA and 93 OPS+. He is not Manny – even Manny in decline. After next year he will get mega-bucks either with a new contract or arbitration. Yes, the Red Sox got rid of Manny and covered his loss with a good player. But, Manny is one of the greatest offensive players ever. Bay isn’t in his league.
