My contribution to the Bret Favre-a-thon

keithchief.jpgI'm pretty sure a Favre-related entry is mandatory, so here's mine: Favre sure is going to look weird in a Jets uniform, isn't he?

What's your most incongruous such image when it comes to baseball?

For me, I think it's Keith Hernandez in an Indians uniform. Hernandez is one of those players whom we remember well in two uniforms, the Cardinals and then the Mets. But the Indians? He was absolutely done by the time he went to Cleveland, as you can see by his numbers.

What else do you got? Willie Mays with the Mets? Frank Robinson with the Dodgers? Wade Boggs with the Devil Rays? Pudge Rodriguez with the Yankees?

  • Meanwhile, at Shea, the Mets' bullpen comes through again! They are lucky that their schedule is so favorable right now.

  • Instant trade analysis: The Rays get Chad Bradford from Baltimore. Good for the Rays for claiming a guy set to make another $3.5 million next year. Bradford, the former Met, can't hurt.

And you probably saw that the Red Sox claimed Brian Giles and are holding trade discussions with the Padres. For the Red Sox to have been awarded the claim, that means that the Mets passed on Giles, since the San Diego player would have gone through the National League first.

Thanks to this site for the photo.

Willie McCovey in a Padres uniform; Tony Perez in an Expos uniform; Seaver in a White Sox uniform and Carlton in a Twins uniform.

Don Mattingly in a Dodger uniform

    As a kid?
Roger Maris in a Cardinal uniform

    Ken:

As a sports fan and a movie fan, the Mets bullpen is now like the fire department Steve Martin ran in the movie Roxanne. At the beginning of the Movie he was saying they were so inept that "It's gotten to the point that when there's a fire people think that calling the fire department is a BAD idea. They're saying things like " it there;'s a fire, whatever you do DON"T call the fire department."

What a diaster the Mets bullpen is right now. Did you see the look on Schoeneweis' face after that home run?

Cohen had an amazing stat: the Mets have blown potential wins for Santana six times this year in 23 starts -- as many as the Twins' bullpen did in over 100 starts.

Don Maloney in an Islanders uni.
For baseball...what about Piazza in a Marlins uniform? Carlton in a White Sox uni? And the one I hate the most? Tommy Herr in a Mets uniform. Yuk!

Billy Crystal in a Yankee unfirom...or a Mets hat for that matter.

    Dan Quisenberry as a Giant..

David Cone and David Wells in a Red Sox uniform. How weird was that? Both pitch perfect games with the Yanks, and then pitch for the Red Sox.
The Mets bullpen will be running on fumes, just like last year. Eevn when Wagner comes back, the Mets need someone to step up.
Ken, was Omar interested in bringing Bradford back to the Mets?

Good question, Dennis. I'll find out. The Rays got first dibs on him because they're in the same league as Bradford.

    Richie G...
I thought we were buds here?

"Don Maloney in an Islanders uni."

Well I wasn't particularly fond of that either.
    But not as much as...

Brian Trottier behind the bench in MSG.

Richie G nailed it. Tommy Herr in a Mets uniform takes the cake. I have only one positive thing to say about Herr - he only retired that one time.

Joel Youngblood in two uniforms on the same day was pretty impressive though. In the afternoon game at Wrigley, he drove in the winning run.

    How could I forget?

Elston Howard in a Red Sox uniform.

    And what about ...

Darryl Strawberry in a striped uniform (and I don't mean pinstripes)

Mark McGwire in an undersized uniform?

I'll take Tom Seaver in a Cincinnati Reds uniform considering what he meant to NY at that time.
MIke Piazza in a Marlins uniform.
Curt Flood in a Washington Senators uniform (considering everything else that went on before that happened.)

Willie Mays playing in a Mets get-up never sat well with me, mainly because he looked so old by then. It seems to me like they really overdid the sentimentality thing in the name of the dollar.

And I was always baffled by Dave Winfield's multiple outfits after he left the Yanks, even if he did have success during those years.

Way before you guys were born, Sal (The Barber) Maglie of the New York Giants, pitching in a Brooklyn Dodger uniform. That was very weird at the time.

Ken, sorry (but happy) to have ignited the firestorm on the blog this afternoon about the reserve clause and how it flies in the face of what I thought every American in 2008 would believe. Your blog had some traffic and participation today with even a live chat. My God. Incredible.

Seeing Willie Mays in a Mets uniform was a little surreal for me. Seeing Roger Maris in a Cardinals uniform at my first game at Shea when I was 8 years old was another shocker because I had always associated him with the Yankees.

Islander...back in the day we couldn't co-exist. But it was hard enough watching Greg Gilbert carry around The Cup...Jan Erixon should have.
I used to be a DIE-HARD Rangers fan. After the way they treated Leetch, screw them.

But the funny thing is, I tell all my Islander fan friends, how pathetic is it that we actually have a better owner and GM then you guys!! Is that even possible?!?!?

".... we actually have a better owner and GM then you guys!! Is that even possible?!?!?"

Eh, don't be so sure.....but this is not the place to debate that.
Sounds like a good topic for debate on the Final Score, since they have become a decent neutral site NOW (I THINK) for discussions like that.
    End of subject (here).

    YANKS WIN TONIGHT.....
And Ken.....Yankee pitchers have sure performed well in the past week.........WHEN MOLINA HAS BEEN CATCHING.
I wonder how Pudge's ego is handling that?
This is putting Girardi in a tough situation.
Hall of Fame Catcher, better hitter.....but does not handle the pitchers well yet.
Tough time of the year to try to learn a staff, even (especially?) for a Hall of Famer.
(is there a Favre lesson/warning here?)

Steve Carlton in a Giants, White Sox, or Indians uniform was bad, but the excruciatingly painful expression on his face on his Minnesota Twins baseball card tells the whole story of a superstar who was robbed blind and was only playing, at that point, for the money...

    JE

    From the previous thread....

"The Rays are not going away, 1-505, their upcoming road trips notwithstanding"

Tough start to their 10 game road trip (SEA,OAK,TEX) tonight JE.
Raul Ibanez delivered a 3rd pitch walkoff to give the Mariners a 2-1 victory.
After the Rays had 1st and 3rd in the top of the 9th with one out and Putz whiffed two Rays on 8 pitches.
That shouldn't affect these seasoned vets, though.

We'll see if the Rays can bounce back tomorrow against Carlos Silva with his 5.92 ERA and 4-12 record for the M's.
Let's just hope playing outdoors in fresh air doesn't get 'em too dizzy running round the bases.
0-1.....9 to play on this road trip.

    I'll be paying attention.

What did Casey Stengel say about Jack Fisher (I think, or was it Carlton Willey?) of the Mets one time?
"Ya gotta be a pretty good pitcher to lose 20 games".

That was in 1964. Deflation in 2008 drops that down to 12.

Thanks, I-505. I was on an overseas flight, and had not yet checked the box scores. Why would a seasoned vet's slower reflexes have helped against Putz? (Oh, wait, seasoned vet Cliff Floyd struck out against Putz in that ninth inning.) Just asking...

I believe that the Casey Stengel comment was referring to Roger Craig

The quote about being a good pitcher in order to lose 20 games is Dick "Turk" Farrell on his 1962 season with the Houston Colt .45s. Now they had a great uniform! Jimmy Hoffa (speaking of Meadowlands residents) said Roger Craig not only deserved a raise, he deserved a piece of the franchise.

I don't usually go nuts about Favre-like moves late in careers but Guy LaFleur as a New York Ranger?? Liked putting ketchup on ice cream

There is always the reaction of Johnny Blanchard not wanting to go on the field wearing the graish (by 1965 standards) uniform of the Kansas City A's after wearing Yankee pinstripes.

Strawberry and Gooden in a Yankee uniform. Yuk!

And Seaver in anything other than a Mets uniform. Blasphemy.
