GMs' meetings: The Yankees met yesterday with CC Sabathia's agents

Not a shocker, but the next step: Two of Sabathia's agents, Greg Genske and Brian Peters - Scott Parker also works with LS Legacy Sports Group - said that the Yankees were one of several teams with whom they met yesterday.

It was a "very preliminary" meeting, Genske, and these meetings are indeed typical at the GMs' meetings. Legacy also represents Orlando Hudson, Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell. Hudson could be an option for the Yankees, if they trade Robinson Cano. But I'm betting they keep Cano.

No, Sabathia is target number one, and Peters said that Sabathia was amenable to pitching in the Bronx, despite testimony by numerous friends that he prefers the West Coast and the National League.

"He's open-minded," Peters said. "The Yankees are definitely one of the teams he'd consider."

The Yankees, of course, are prepared to blow away all competitors financially in the race for Sabathia's services.

  • Meanwhile, Genske said that another client of his, Orlando Hernandez, wants to keep pitching, after missing the entire season with the Mets. El Duque underwent surgery on his right foot in September and is rehabilitating.

Said Genske: "He wants to be a closer. He's ready to go." Closing might be a stretch, but certainly there are teams out there that would try him as a reliever. Shoot, the Mets should consider it. They should just pay him $600,000 (with incentives) instead of $6 million.

  • This just in: The Yankees have declined the 2009 options for Jason Giambi and Carl Pavano. Anything but surprising. They still have to decide on Damaso Marte, for whom they have a $6 million option.

Ken I'd be all for signing El Duque to a one million dollar one year deal and have a press availability saying something like there is no risk high reward to this contract. El Duque felt there was unfinished business etc.

If the Yankees truly are going to blow away CC, then do you think CC will be a Yank? I do.

It's sure looking that way, Richie. Official predictions to come on 11/14.

The Wilpons will be made to look like the fools they are if they sign Hernandez. How many millions have the already wasted on him? $12? At least the Yankees had the brains to cut ties with Pavano. I doubt he will be returning to the Bronx. If he does, I will send a nice check to the charity of Ken's choosing.
