Omar's Ongoing Search
Mets GM Omar Minaya was amicably unrevealing about his intentions regarding Monday's trade deadline. "Nothing but back and forth conversations," he said Wednesday afternoon in the runway outside the Mets' clubhouse. "There are so many teams in the wild-card race. I've never seen it like this. It speaks well for parity."
Parity is not what the Mets are seeking, however. They want to reach elite status and despite their huge lead in the NL East, there are perceived holes in the pitching staff, particularly the starting rotation. "Every team is looking for pitching. We will investigate anything to make our club better," Minaya said.
While Minaya wouldn't bite on specific names, it's known that the Mets have interest in pitchers like Barry Zito, Dontrelle Willis, Livan Hernandez, Gil Meche and others. "There are a lot of big names, but they're rumors," Minaya said. "That's fun for the fans but who knows? In the next two or three days, there could be a big swing. Teams that are three games out [in the wild-card race] could fall back to six."
If such teams have free agents they are unsure if they can sign next year, they face that annual dilemma. "Clubs are asking themselves, 'When is the best time to get the most for a player?' And how long do you hold out as a seller?" Minaya said.
He was smiling as he raised these questions. It's nice to be a buyer and even nicer not to face much urgency to make a move at all.

No urgency? There's nothing *but* urgency. After all their success, are the Mets going to limp into the playoffs because of holes in the rotation? Maine's proving to be a much needed asset, but even with Pedro's return, how can we forget all those starts toward the beginning of the season when the team just couldn't get Pedro a win?
We can't rely on luck and inconsistency post-season.

I agree with Omar 110%. He is correct! I'm tired of all the mets fans posting go and get willis and zito, i mean its not that easy. Almost every team in playoff contention surely are interested in those 2 pitchers. We havea good ball club here, hence the teams record. Our pitching isnt as bad as everyone seems to think. And just like any other team in baseball, we could improve our staff. But you have to give some to get some. None of the teams who these pitcher pitch for are going to take our lesser players just because we are the Mets. Get off Omars backs and be thankful we have him for our GM. Look at what he has done in 2 seasons, and start to give him some trust. He has definatley out GM'ED( i made this up) Cashman for the Yankees in the last two seasons. Go bother him about siging and Randy Johnson and Pavano!
I feel that Omar should not make a move for a starter unless its a good one like Willis, Zito, or maybe even Meche. All the other names that have been going around like Livan, Maddux, Kip Wells... etc, we have those type of pitchers already in Trashcell, Maine, Pelfrey, El Du-que, Bannister... Sometimes the best moves are the moves you do not make. Also, if you look at all the potential play-off teams right now, how many of them actually have an outstanding 3rd starter?.. Not many!.. I think are bullpen is Strong and that will be the difference in the Post Season!.. Just please don't do anything stupid that will risk the future at Flushing!
Robert Tuminski raises a fine point: "None of the teams who these pitcher (sic) pitch for are going to take our lesser players just because we are the Mets". That's what Yankee fans have sounded like the last few years: Floating absolutely ridiculous trade scenarios with the deluded belief that every team is just chomping at the bit to trade good players for their garbage (here's a good one a Yankee fan floated recently: Carl Pavano and Randy Johnson for Dontrelle Willis. Where do these idiots come up with this?) Like Zoƫ, I believe there is some sense of urgency, but not to the point where the Mets are going to pull the trigger on a lopsdided trade. Thank God Omar "gets it", unlike his predecessors Philips and Duquette. A trade for the sake of making a trade is not the way to go. If the Mets roration of Glavine, Martinez, Trachsel, Maine and either Pelfrey or Hernandez is healthy (and that's a BIG if), other than Barry Zito and Dontrelle Willis, I don't see any pitcher that would justify giving up Milledge or Heilman in a trade.
what a pathetic bunch of losers. get a life you jerks
Mr. Met, you can't even pronounce ....Tuminsky....
I was completely against getting Zito because of Boras but I have had a change of heart. If we can get Zito for Milledge, and according to people in the know thats what it would take, then maybe Omar should go for it. Reuniting him with Peterson will be great for him and once he gets a feel for pitching in the National league he will never go back to the AL. Next year Glavine's money comes off the books, so it won't increase payroll to resign him. And even if he does walk, we get 2 first round picks for losing him. We have enough young outfielders in the system to be ok. It would be nice to lock up an ace who is not yet 30 to go along with all the young pitchers coming up.
Ying Yang, the only pathetic loser here is you. Obviously you must be a retarded Stankee Fan.
Sorry Special Head Teacher, but I am not going to go out with you. This is getting a little ridiculous now; security turned you away at the Stadium a couple of times already but I guess that was not enough for you. NO MEANS NO.
Maddog, I agree if we could get Zito for Milledge it would be a good thing, but only if the A's let the Mets negotiate a contract extension before the trade and Zito accepts. Otherwise, you don't give up your top prospect for 2 months of service.
Zoe,that's what I been talking about.
Casey, Zoe has a boyfriend. He is bald. He looks a lot like Moby.
Moby? the guy use to look like Hulk Hogan.Eli women can do more tricks with their body then a monkey can do with a peanut.
The operative word is "monkey" my friend...tell Moby his music sucks. It's nothing but a chimp attraction.
There's no way the Mets are getting another solid starter before the trade deadline. Pelfrey and Maine are solid. I would trade Traschel first before anyone. Can we dump that guy on anyone? Please?
I'd trade him and Heilman for a star in the bullpen.
Anyone care to comment on a trade for Jason Schmidt? Without giving up Milledge or Pelfrey of course.
Maddog...finally someone to back me up on a trade for Zito! Why is it most think going after him is so bad? So what if we lose a "potential" star in an outfielder? They come along 10X more often than a World Series shot. Which is what THAT trade would give us. That may be all Beane will ask for. And so what if we give'em Heilman...his ego won't let him "settle" for just being a reliever on a great team anyway. Pitching is, what has been, and will be...all about for any great team. Plus...Omar will not shy away from "overpaying" for Zito come Dec.
Firedog98, I think Zito would be a great addition IF the Mets can sign him to a long-term deal. Great pitching always trumps geat hittng, ESPECIALLY in the Playoffs, but if Milledge gets traded for Zito (and according to ESPN Beane is willing to swap Zito for Milledge straight up), and then Zito refuses to sign and wants to test the market, the only way you can justify giving up Miledge, a potential five-tool player, is if Zito helps the Mets win the Series. Because if the Mets don't sign Zito (although I doubt Omar would let that happen) and they don't win the Series, all the Mets would have done is traded Milledge, who even if they are not sold on 100%, could have been used in the future for another trade, and have nothing to show for it but a 2-month rental of Zito.
Mr. Met- Seems to be a trade though that would be worth the risk. If he does go else where, we would still get two first round picks and atleast, if milledge does become a star, he would be in the American League...I just think we can make the series with him and "woo" him enough to sign him in Dec. Like you said, with the funds freed up at the end of the season from Glavine, I don't see us NOT "overpaying" to retain him.
Remember the most important thing about getting Zito now is to let him see how much easier it is to pitch in the National League. Once he gets a taste of that he will never go back to the AL. Which means we would just have to out bid the Cardinals. And he loves Rick Peterson. The way Pedro looks tonight we might not have a choice.
