The countdown is on ...

Now that we're inside a month before pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie, the Mets' retooling for the offseason is pretty much complete. Good to see Carlos Delgado's rehab from wrist and elbow surgery is on schedule -- that should mean no more tendinitis problems this spring -- but the real concerns involve the pitching staff. How's the confidence level out there? Is this a better or worse team than the one that was stopped a game short of the World Series last October?

Alot depends of what Rick Peterson can do with the young guys. Maine, Perez, Pelfrey,Humber and maybe Vargas. If 2 or 3 can become dependable starters the Mets will be in good shape. If Sanchez, and Padilla come back healthy bullpen will be fine. Lastly if Pedro can come back rested and at close to full stength he'll be the boast the team may need the second half.

I wouldn't want them to go into the postseason with this pitching, but I think they're fine for now. They should have no problem finding 3 serviceable starters from among Maine, Perez, Williams, Humber, Pelfrey, and Sosa. Pedro is due back in plenty of time for the postseason, and if at least 2 of the above-mentioned guys are not up to snuff, there is plenty of time to pick someone up during the season. The division is not very strong. The Mets should have little trouble repeating.

There are so many variables that define how a baseball team will perform. 2006 will serve as a frame of reference. Baseball is like a slow developing play that plays out from the middle of February to, hopefully the end of October. To make a judgement on January 20, 2007 would be just an educated guess. This time last year who could expect Jose Valentine and Endy Chavez to be such major contributers and start in the NLCS for the Mets. Who could have predicted that Duaner Sanchez would be so dominate until his unfortunate cab accident the last day of July. We need to evaluate the Mets in PSL and then throughout the course of 2007 season.
