The Mets 2007 roster for Opening Day is complete. Ambiorix Burgos and Lastings Milledge took the final two spots after today's 8-2 win over the Marlins. Reliever Jon Adkins cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans. In a somewhat surprising move, Chan Ho Park accepted a demotion to New Orleans as well rather than ask for his release, so the Mets were able to retain both Adkins and Park.

Do the Mets have such great starting pitching that they can demote a Chan Ho Park?
yes Bill, they do. Over the course of spring training, Park hasn't performed as well as as Maine, Perez or Pelfrey. So, accepting the demotion, he can sit in N'awlins in case we need an emergency starter (or be traded.)
Why retain a stiff like Adkins? He SUCKED this spring.
Thank God Adkins is not on the team. He gave up two of those 4 "miracle" homers to the Dodgers last year. Four straight homers and Adkins was in the middle of it. That is the kind of performance that can crush a team. Now he can go crush the dreams of the Zephyrs.
Why retain Ambiorix Burgos?
He s*cked for the last three years. But I guess ya gotta see the trade of Bannister through to the end
because getting rid of Burgos now would make Omar Minaya look like a foo foo.
Hmmmm? How about it Omar?
You retain Burgos because he's only 22 and throws 100 mph heat. Y'know how rare that is these days? Given his age and Rick Peterson's skills, my money's on Peterson straightening Burgos out to where he becomes a force out of the pen.
By the way, Anonymous, if it makes you feel any better about the Brian Bannister deal, the Royals sent Bannister to Triple-A the other day, so how good a spring could he have possibly had?
Props to Professor, problem with your theory is that the Kansas City Royals have all the friggin time in the world. They can wait for Bannister to develop. They are the Royals. I honestly would have been surprised if Bannister made the team considering he missed almost all of last year and I don't see how he could have stamina at this point.
But don't worry he may be back soon enough, Gil Meche was 0-3 with a 7.31 era this spring (13 innings, 16 runs )
The Royals will hit very very well this year but other than a revitalized Greinke, I can't help feel that Bannister will get a real chance in 2007 in their rotation.
PS. Teahen, Alex Gordon, Emil Brown, Shealy ,John Buck and David DeJesus are the real deals.
Professor, if Burgos is kept on the 25 man roster, and he gives up a five run lead in the seventh, capped off by a Jimmy Rollins homer. Are you going to be screaming that he is a bum?
I can hear the collective groans from your TV room already when the doors open up and Ambiorix comes sprinting out of the bullpen to pitch.
That is the time, to go for a cig break and a wiz.
Bannister was 0-1 with a 10.03 ERA in four spring starts, and was beaten out by Brandon Duckworth for the role as fifth starter. Appears the Royals will keep him in Omaha the same way the Mets are viewing Park in New Orleans: rotation insurance/trade potential.
Roberto Dias, have you seen the numbers for the rest of the Kansas City Royal's pitching staff? You are comparing Brandon Duckworth ( a washout ) Chan Ho Park ( a flameout ) to Brian Bannister who is in basically his rehab starts in Sping Training? Dude of the three I am absolutely taking Bannister no doubt about it, and I won't even think twice. You shouldn't either, he can be something special.
"Anonymous:"
No, no, not MY comparison, but one created by the Mets and Royals themselves by deciding who made the cuts.
Bannister's advantage is that he essentially has a clean slate: no background. His tenure at Omaha is what will define him, and I wish him well.
