So much for Scenario A (see previous post). Guess it's Scenario B or nothing for the Mets, who trot out John Maine today to save their season -- maybe. Ramon Castro is starting for Paul Lo Duca, who still is bothered by a bruised left knee, so No. 16 may already have played his last game in a Mets uniform.
General manager Omar Minaya had an informal chat with reporters in the Mets dugout this morning. Looking back over the last two weeks, Minaya admitted that he expected this team to have clinched the NL East by now, and planned to be at a car wash today. When jokingly asked if he was opening one, Minaya laughed.
"I may have to consider that," he said.
Minaya is surprised by the collapse of his $115-million team and made a telling comment about the character of these Mets.
"Part of it last year was that we won easy," Minaya said. "As a group, we haven't been through a pennant race. This is our first pennant race."
And now that the Mets are being tested, they deserve an F. Give them a D in spelling, too. In the runway to the dugout, someone had put a framed photo of the team celebrating a walkoff win earlier this season. In large print, the message read: "We've worked to hard. Let's finish this."
Oops. The Mets must hope that's the only error they make today.

Minaya is always looking for a power arm in the bullpen. Too bad he traded them all away!
Jimmy Qualls??? NO!!! Paul Hoover! Hats off to Maine for pitching a gem. I've been kicking myself all afternoon for passing on two box seats to today's game (too much work and too worn out by this rough September) but now I don't feel as bad.
Now we just need one more win and Manny Acta to take two from the Phils. I don't think it's going to happen, but dreaming is free.
The Padres SUCK I'm gonna be furious if they eliminate the Mets and or Phillies.
I just watched the Mets win a classic, great game. Fantastic pitching by John Maine, good job! Oh, by the way I am a Yankee fan. What I don't understand is why Met fans hate the Yankees?? I read this morning in Newsday how one fan said if the Mets are eliminated he would root against the Yanks. Well, if the Mets make it and the Yankees were to lose in the playoffs I would cheer for the Mets. When it comes down to it I am a NY fan. Why would a New Yorker root against the home team?? I can't understand that at all. By the way, I am married to a Red Sox fan...let the fun begin!
So this is why the Mets are a cursed team… and why Met fans are so jaded. Maine takes his no-hitter into the eighth inning, gets two outs—-the second on a strikeout, his 14th, of former Met Mike Jacobs after falling behind 3-0-—and then Marlins backup catcher Paul Hoover chops a 1-2 bleeder up the third-base line that stays fair and breaks up the no-hitter.
I am convinced that the Mets are NEVER going to throw a no-hitter. Then again, maybe it’s better off they didn’t throw a no-hitter. Because then, if the Phillies win out and clinch the NL East, it would always be associated with the greatest September choke in baseball history.
The governor has just called and issued an 11th hour and 59th minute stay of execution!
I still believe.
Do you???
Poetry.
PHILLIES LOOOOOOOSSSSSEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
YAHOOOOOOEEEEE!!!!!!
Another day tomorrow!!! Lets wrap this thing up and secure our second NL East Title in a row!!!!
If the stars are aligned and the Mets win tomorrow and make it in, then it's a whole new season. None of these last couple of weeks will matter.
Look at the Cards from last year.
Let's stay positive ans support our team.
Let's Go METS!!!
Ya Gotta Believe.
Tug is rooting for us, even though he was a Phillie too, he got his start in NY.
Great job John Maine!
Lets Go Tom Glavine and the TEAM
I am Mr. Met
Now that the pressure has switched, the Mets will get a reprieve. Obviously the Phils played, were managed and appeared to be feeling the pressure of being in front. Not he same as a low expectation when you are 7 out with 17 to play, then you can play with all the chips in and no real pressure. The low expectation says you are not supposed to win anyway, so you can play with great resolve and no fear. Yesterday the expectations changed low for the Mets and high for the Phils. It now stays High for the Phils as they can actually end of with a Choke label if they lose today and the Mets win. The Mets are a telanted team that must now feel all the pressure is gone and they can focus on taking back the division. They got an 11th hour reprieve from the Gov and usually the team with the experience taps into the ability to play under pressure. Of course the Mets failed durng this week under the gun, yet I think the tables have now turned and they feel a sense of relief as opposed to pressure. They can now play the hunter instead of the hunted. 136 days in first don't feel the same as the 1 day in 2nd, so this may be the best thing that could have happened to this team, it may be the fuel that propels them into the post-season!
The last time I saw a team or someone take it up the butt like this was last week at my place! Mets suck!
Dont blame Perez or Glavine, blame the management. This team wasnt improved in 1 area over the off season. How could you have 16 mil budgeted for Zito and not spend it on anyone after seeing you wasnt getting him.Its money again fellow mets fans, Payson,LuRue and Wilpon its gotten better but its still there. And to all the mets fans who dont understand whats its like to be amet fan let me say its fitting that the mets and jets were on at the same time today because the only thing that saparates the mets from the jets is 1986,all i know is im bonded to both teams and its been a lot of losing, disappointments so if you cant take it be a yankee fan theyre management spent 25 mil on Clemens and will pay Arod over 30 mil a year next season. All i know is that im a met fan for life and tommorrow i'll put on my met cap and go to work
KBULL :
So does that mean you are used to be a loser????? Such a pity to have such low self esteem and no fight to change it.
Anyone who attaches their personal "loser" or "winner" status to the success of their favorite sports team cares way too much. I'm not a loser for loving the Mets. I think that my unswerving loyalty makes me a winner in all of it. Yankees fans are spoiled by their team's successes. I find it odd that so many Yankees fans can't resist kicking the Mets while they are down. I wonder if you are spending this much time talking smack on Indians blogs. If you are, please send the link.
Who said I was a Yankee fan dear? Are you REALLY MetroSexual honey?????
lets face it our season was over in the beginning of september today they left glavin in the first inning to have 7 runs scored on him but yet they took john maine out with 1 hit and 4 outs to go they have to start leaving our pitchers in the game and letting them fight to win our ball pen has relief pitchers in it to save a game not to go out and pitch half the game i mean do we really know what our pitchers can do yeah for 6 innings we do damn were are the tom seaver days when you didnt count how many balls or strikes he pitched one days we have to let one of our pitches finish 9 INNINGS and stop counting yes i am a big met fan and always will be so the season is over but they will be back next year now i will just sit back and relax something that was hard to do in the month of september
I'm on line at Shea. When are the gates opening up to sell Post Season Tickets? We won the east right? I mean we had a 7 game lead with 14 to go! No one in history would loose a lead like that! What time does the window open? Do we open against the D-Backs?
