Gameday 89: Mets at Phillies
Mets (44-44) take on the Phillies (48-41)
Pedro Martinez (2-2) 7.39 ERA v. Adam Eaton (3-6) 4.79 ERA
The Mets are riding high after yesterday's long (looooooong) extra-inning win over the Phillies. They come into play only 3.5 games back in the East and 2.5 games behind the Marlins. There were plenty of good signs yesterday, including Oliver Perez's continued (and surprising) dominance. Joe Smith was masterful in the longest appearance of his career and Tatis continues to make a name for himself as a clutch hitter during a season where so few Mets are.
Their situational hitting, though, continues to struggle. Despite stringing together 14 hits, the Mets were only able to plate two runs before Tatis' huge home run in the 12th. Wagner, though, continues to be worrisome coming in to close. Other than that three-game stretch earlier in the season, he's been dominant, but the Mets have got to be worried after another inopportune home run and another blown save. Also something to watch: after yesterday's 7+-hour marathon, both teams are bound to be exhausted.
Pitchers:
This isn't vintage Pedro the Mets going on the mound. The aging righty has been a huge concern from the Mets. His inflated ERA notwithstanding, clubs (like St. Louis in his last start) have been flat hitting the ball hard against him. He gave up five earned runs in five innings in that appearance and got the no-decision in the loss. That was his third straight bad outing and you've gotta believe that Pedro is feeling the frustration. Pedro will have to be impeccable tonight if the Mets want to have a chance. Historically, they've struggled against Adam Eaton, who's been better than his record indicates. He's allowed only four runs in a 12 inning span but has gotten no run support to speak of. Before his two-run five-hit performance against Atlanta, he hadn't won since June 3.
Here to take you through it, Laura Albanese.

And Billy Wags gets credited with a save?
After he (again) staggers thru the 9th?
At the rate of two runs per inning, if Wags had pitched the entire game the Mets would have lost 18 to 10
I will be glad when his contract is up.
o.t. im sick of all the damn negative mets fans. His job was to get the save... he got the save. What the hell is the problem. I Understand he made it far more interesting then it needed to be, but who cares, they won. Does this register with anyone?? Come on how do you know if the save ended up being with only a 1 run lead he may have pitched more cautiously and not given up any runs. Everybody thinks there a freaking fortune teller. They won. They won 3-4 in this series. They have won 7 out of 10 against the Phillies this year and are 2.5 games back and your talking about Billy Wagner!?!?!? Seriously bro, if your not a mets fan then your not a Mets fan. You have to have at least an ounce of faith in your team. So what they made it interesting in this joke of a ball park where a pop fly is a Home Run. They won didnt they? isnt that the goal here? You play to win the game-herman edwards

The discomfort with Wagner is that he is payed alot of money to get 3 outs, and it seems more often than not, for some strange reason, Wagner makes it a heart attack experience.
If everyone he faces is hitting .300 he should still get 3 outs before 1 run crosses.
Mets need to know they can count on Wagner.
Being a reliever is mental game.
and Wagner likes to have fun with it, manufacturer his own pressure, or so it seems at times. As met fans were just looking for 3 outs, failrly quickly, failrly reliably.
Great job today Mets in supporting Pedro,
Feel the love for the great Pedro.
Keep it up.
A win is a win, is a win. They all count the same in the standings.
Oh, and "D" - It's "Paid" not "Payed" - there isn't such a word.
Hey Dave,
We won tonite, but you cover the Mets and I see a need by the break of some right handed hitters.
I can think of three, Keppenger from the Reds, Aurelia from the Giants, and Rivera from the Halos.
Dump Castillo and get 2 or 3 of these guys, and the Mets would be on there way the 2nd half.
They shouldn't be expensive.
Your thoughts ?
New sport. Give the Mets a 20-0 lead. If the Phillies get the tying run to the plate they win.If they can't Mets win. Best 4 out 7 wins series. Betting allowed. What would the odds be on Philly winning the series?.
