Round 2 To The Cubs

The Cubs won a 2-1 squeaker at U.S. Cellular Field on Saturday thanks to a 9th inning squeeze play.

Hitting The Wall?

The White Sox offense has been struggling all season and no one knows it better than hitting coach Greg Walker. He talked with Rich King about the Sox before Saturday's game.

Game Notes For Saturday Vs. Cubs

*Rich Hill has been tough on the road, holding hitters to a .180 batting average. He returns to the scene of the crime today where he served up a grand slam to Tadahito Iguchi moments after last year's Michael Barrett/A.J. Pierzynski scuffle. *Javier Vazquez has allowed 4+ runs in 7 of his last 10 starts. *Pierzynski is a .352 hitter against the Cubs. *The White Sox have lost 20 of their last 25 games.

*The White Sox hold a 30-27 series edge in the Crosstown Classic. *The Cubs have been outhomered 13-2 in their last 5 games. *The Sox are 6-10 in one-run games. No Bull

One of the biggest reasons the Sox bullpen struggles have been so noticeable is that the pen continues to grow more important in baseball each year. It's the biggest change to the game I've seen in all my decades playing and broadcasting.

Forty years ago, you might see one or two guys who were decent relief pitchers and the other guys in the pen were starters who were trying to work something out. They didn't send them to the minors as much then and the guys who were starting threw a lot more innings than the "five and fly" philosophy we see so often now. The game has changed with specialization so that you need quality arms down there and several guys who know their roles. The advance of the bullpen is one of the reasons teams are tougher today.

Our division is also loaded with good bullpens. Detroit and Minnesota can match up with anybody in the late innings, and I think the Cleveland pen has performed much better than anyone would have predicted.

Game Notes For Friday vs. Astros

* Including the White Sox two World Series wins over the Astros in 2005, the White Sox have won eight of their 11 all-time meetings with the Astros at U.S. Cellular Field. * The White Sox have lost 10 of their last 12 games, and have been outscored 78-39 over the stretch. * The Astros have lost 10 of their last 11 games away from home, and have allowed their opponents to hit .341 over the stretch. * Since May 8, Chicago’s bullpen, without Bobby Jenks’ numbers included, has posted a 10.47 ERA (64 ER/55.0 IP), has allowed 10 home runs, and has allowed opponents to hit .379 (96/253) against them. * Chris Sampson has allowed more than three runs just once over his ten starts this season. * Jim Thome leads all major leaguers with 52 career home runs in interleague play, including three in his last four games against NL competition. * Houston could be without Lance Berkman after he was suspended Friday by MLB for two games for being ejected Tuesday in a win over Colorado.

Ill Winds

The White Sox dropped their third straight home game to the Yankees Thursday night, leaving Ozzie Guillen to lament another poor bullpen performance.

Fields of Green

The White Sox are hoping Josh Fields can hold down third base while Joe Crede recuperates from a back injury. Fields talked about his call-up with WGN's Dan Roan.

Getting Back on Garland

Jon Garland has been on a pretty good run of late. If you look at his history with the Yankees, he's got a good ERA against them. He had a good outing against them earlier in the year, but things fell apart at the end. Jon's last outing was his worst of the year but he was a bit under the weather and I expect he'll bounce back tonight.

Speaking of the weather, we're going to start a bit late with the Yankees bringing rain to town again for their second visit of the year.

Game Notes For Monday vs. Yankees

They led the AL East by a half game ahead of Boston in the standings. Today they are 12 ½ games behind the division-leading Red Sox. * Bobby Abreu has not homered since May 16 against the White Sox, a span of 17 games. * Jon Garland has won 18 games each of the last two seasons, but the White Sox are just 3-7 when he's pitched this year. * Bobby Jenks has converted 14 consecutive save opportunities, the longest active streak in the American League. * The White Sox went 1-6 on their just completed seven-game road trip. They allowed seven runs or more in four of those games (all losses).
