Gary Sheffield's left wrist is still hurting -- a lot, apparently -- and he's fallen back into one of his weird moods. He just told us he has no plans to rush back onto the field, essentially pushing the Yankees to place him on the disabled list.
"I'm just not going to go out there and play injured," Sheffield said. "I've been there, done that. I'm not going to do it again. It's just that simple."
Although Sheffield is most definitely moody, and he could very well wake up tomorrow and proclaim himself healthy again, it's hard not to wonder whether his hard stance has something to do with his contract status.

I for one am very happy to see Sheffield not in the lineup. The self-centered prima donna is nothing but a cancer on this team.
He's a lazy toad in the OF and with Damon and Jeter usually being on base alot, why does Torre bat this guy 3rd? All he does is pull the ball to 3B usually for a DP.
You need someone to spray the ball or go to RF to move the runners. It's called TEAM ball. Giambi or Matsui are perfect for the 3rd slot! Giambi is leading the team in HR and OBP, and Matsui is their best clutch hitter. Not the headcase Sheffield.
By the way, what is the Yanks record without him in the lineup vs. when he's in it? And one last thought, Cashman shouldn't even THINK of picking up this guy's option. Let the egomaniac spread his cancer some place else next year. I'll take Bubba Crosby anyday!!!
