Injured list

This truly is a injured list. It's just past 6 p.m., about an hour before the scheduled first pitch, and here's our count of injured players, and their current status.

Derek Jeter -- bruised thumb -- not in lineup
Jeter tried to throw today but had trouble and stopped. Joe Torre said Jeter would likely spend the game in the clubhouse getting treatment. Sure looks as if tomorrow, at least, is in doubt, too.

Jason Giambi -- stomach virus -- in lineup
He still looked pale, very pale, but he said he was feeling better. I don't wish that virus on anyone.

Alex Rodriguez -- stomach virus -- in lineup
Rodriguez looked far more healthy than Giambi.

Shawn Chacon -- hematoma below left knee -- likely will start Friday
He said the bruise still is ugly, but he doesn't feel it when he throws. Good thing for the Yankees, because I can't imagine they'd like to send Aaron Small out there anytime soon. His job security is dwindling.

Bubba Crosby -- strained right hamstring -- still not playing rehab games yet
Surprising how long this injury has sidelined Crosby. Both he and the Yankees thought he would be ready before his 15 days were up, but he was eligible to return already, and is still probably a week away, at least.

Octavio Dotel -- Tommy John surgery -- targeted to return third week of June
Think the Yankees could use him in the eighth inning, setting up Mariano RIvera? Could happen soon. He's still in Tampa throwing in extended spring training games.

Gary Sheffield -- torn ligament, dislocating tendon in left wrist -- status uncertain
Who knows when we'll see him next. Last time he was on the disabled list, he avoided all contact with reporters, saying afterwards he didn't want the focus to be on him. His wife is also expecting any day now.

Hideki Matsui -- broken left wrist -- status uncertain
Matsui actually dropped by the clubhouse today to work out. He is only exercising right now, and can't say whether he will be back this season. Of course he expects to return. "That's my mind talking, not my wrist," he said.

Oh yeah, and then there's Carl Pavano... He's still on the payroll. We know that.
