Finally, some positive injury news. Derek Jeter is back.
Well, not totally. He's the designated hitter tonight, and the Yankees don't know when he's going to be able to return to shortstop. His right thumb hurts too much for him to squeeze the ball when he throws it, but it doesn't bother him swinging a bat, so the Yankees couldn't wait any longer.
At a time when players are dropping seemingly by the game, the Yankees will gladly take Jeter, even if it's just as the DH for a couple of days.
Separately, I've received a couple of emails about impending roster decisions.
-- Shawn Chacon comes off the disabled list to start Sunday, and Matt Smith figures to be the pitcher sent down because he has options. But sooner or later we're going to see the end of the line for Scott Erickson and Aaron Small if they don't pick it up.
-- Bubba Crosby could come off the disabled list as soon as Sunday, and you would think Kevin Thompson would go down. While that could be the case, if Derek Jeter is back at shortstop by then, maybe Nick Green goes down.
Your thoughts?

I'll bet Small delayed his departure by at least a month by pitching a scoreless inning last night. On the other hand, Erickson must go! We don't need 2 mop-up men in the 'pen, and is Joe aware that Matt Smith's ERA is 0.00????
Re: Bubba vs. Thompson. It seems like they're fairly equivalent. Thompson probably has more upside due to younger age, but since we all know he'll only ride pine because Torre "trusts" Crosby more, maybe he's better off going back to Columbus.
Small was fine last night. I like him, actually. Maybe not as a starter, but he can be our new Tanyon Sturtze in the bullpen.
I sure wish we had a better option than Nick Green. With his .077/.200/.077 line, Torre is not going to play him in anything other than an emergency.
Small and erickson deserve to hit the minors, and keep smith, small might be able to stay a releiver in blowout games, but, it is a scary thought the way he is pitching to put him in key games. If green is the best the yanks can do,it does show the farm system has big holes in it,although a few have come through like melky. my biggest fear is alex going back to his first year with the yanks and literally having the sox in his head as he cannot perform against that team no matter what, and joe is trying hard to shield him from the press and constant booing he gets at home. no mvp this year, lucky if he hits 290 or 30 hr's,this will be a major problem later this year.
Small as a "long-man" makes good sense as the fragility of the starting staff frequently calls for a "spot-starter". Small fills both those roles. Bubba will most likely be in a trade package come July 31. I think he will be packaged with a minor leaguer or 2, and sent to the Twins for Torii Hunter. A recognizable name with big league experience, will help quiet the Twin's fans, as Torii takes over center field for the Yanks.
I'm sorry but Bubba Crosby does not qualify as a "recognizable name with major league experience", at least to anyone outside NYY and their fans. If that's what Torii is traded for, there'll be riots in the streets of Minneapolis. Also, what do you propose to do with Johnny Damon? He did kinda sign a 4-year deal this offseason (as did Matsui)...
Even though A-Rod had 2 hits and an RBI early in the game he failed again under pressure yesterday not being able to get on base his last two at bats. And Manny had a lead-off walk and scored eventually the winnig run fot the Sux. While it is delightful to watch the kids playing so well, unless Alex steps up his game the Yanks may not win the division. And, of course, if there was any decency left in the shrunken 'Big' Unit, he would have resigned. Fat chance though.
I don't think we'll be trading for Torii Hunter. We need pitching, not OFers. If we get an OFer, it will be someone cheap, like Craig Wilson.
"Even though A-Rod had 2 hits and an RBI early in the game he failed again under pressure yesterday not being able to get on base his last two at bats."
Hey Igor, when getting on base THREE TIMES in one night, as A-Rod did last night, isn't good enough, you're getting a bit ridiculous in the playa-hating. When you give such scrutiny to every single player like you do Alex, maybe we can take you seriously.
Um, Igor...you do know that an OBP around .400 is considered very good to great, right? That means a player gets on ONLY 40% of the time!! A-Rod's OBP for the game was .500. If you think it's possible to get on base 100%, I want some of whatever you're smoking because it sure seems swell. Next thing you know, people will boo Alex for not hitting a grand-slam every time he comes up to bat. It's absurd, and I don't know when people will realize it.
