Hammy Whammy

Could it be that injuries will do what neither the Red Sox nor any other AL East team has been able to do for the previous eight years – prevent the Yankees from winning a divisional champion?

The latest cause for worry is the hamstring injury suffered by Robinson Cano in the night game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Marlins. Cano pulled up lame several steps from second base on a double to right-center in the sixth and immediately left the game in obvious pain. The hard-hitting second baseman, batting .325, was initially diagnosed with a strained left hamstring.

Manager Joe Torre appeared concerned late last night, saying, "We'll have to wait overnight to see whether it's a full-blown [tear] or just a cramp." Cano, trying to summon up a smile, said he had never experienced such an injury before and walked with a noticeable limp as he left Yankee Stadium. He was hoping for good news on Monday.

But hamstrings have not been good to New York baseball teams this season. Mets starting pitcher Brian Bannister was placed on the DL on April 29 with a strained hamstring and still hasn't returned to action. Yankees outfielder Bubba Crosby strained his hamstring making a diving catch on May 18 and the next day was placed on the DL. He missed nearly a month.

Everyone loves Bubba, but losing Cano for any substantial length of time would be a much greater blow to the Yankees, who already have a depleted lineup without Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui.

We can all just hope Cano is Ok.But on another note trades to brings us a pennant are not the answer this year. They will only weaken our farm system for years to come. Our pitching is too shallow for a pennant run. One trade can't makeup for Wright, Chacon and a weak relief staff. The bridge to Mariano is falling down. Our scouts must have been looking at a different guy named Farnsworth when suggesting the FA pickup. The camera crew caught Guidry with his head down and shaking back and forth with Farnsworth in the game. The coaching staff knows the score. There just keeping us in the hunt. I like converting Duncan to catcher if he can handle it. I would go after Audrey Huff for a backup instead of Stennet. I watch Direct TV's MLB and all the teams with good young pitching is nice to see. The Yanks could be in the same position if we would develop and live with their short commings just as we are doing now with our pitching staff. Picking up corner outfielders may enhance offensive production but will cost us too much talent from the farm system. The big question can the real Yankee fan stand pat with a good developing team with capacity for Divison winner as opposed to a real try for a World Series win?

Losing Cano for any length of time hurts, but we do have Cairo. In fact, it's Cairo that makes Cano expendable in any possible deal for either Soriano and or Guillen, or The D-Train. Even though having Cairo at 2nd base weakens our bench, "Clueless" doesn't use the bench players effectively during a game anyway, so this is a non-factor. It is Cairo, a bench player, that will play a huge part in this injury marred Yankee season. He will allow the Yankees to trade Cano, and keep Hughes. I know you Cano fans are shaking your heads in dismay. But when you see Hughes "toeing the rubber" at Yankee Stadium this year, remember to yell out a thank you to Miguel Cairo. The little noticed, often overlooked, seldom used unless absolutely necessary, utility player that saved this seson and the Yankee future.

Trading Cano, this is what makes a horse race but I cannot agree. I say, "keep Cano and Hughes" live with the team and make minor adjustments. The team is not set for the long haul and WS run. Cairo can't handle everyday. He showed a drop off of play when filling in for Jeter. To trade Cano will be similar to the Mets trading Kazmir to the Devil Rays. Cano is improving defensively everyday and hitting .325 in his second year which is great. I would be very surprise to see Cano traded.

Cairo makes Cano expendable?

Cairo: .240 .298 .313

Cano: .325 .353 .439

A player with a .611 OPS doesn't make a player with a .792 OPS expendable.

To posit that the Yankees will trade either Cano or Hughes is sophistry.

Any moves the Yankees make will be minor ones.

Cano could be out for an extended period of time. If there's a tear, perhaps the rest of the season. There aren't enough moves to be made to salvage this season. Sox on a roll, win East handily (8-10 games)

they are not trading cano so just stop thinking they are. cairo doesnt make cano expendable. we are 2 games back in the division can people just backoff them for a little and let them play. They took 2/3 from a good florida team where its hard to sweep a doubleheader. Id love to see hughes called up this season but I wouldnt blame them if they didnt call him up. Right now the most importnant thing is that we just have to hope cano doesnt go on the DL

Here's a question to all Yankee fans:

You have a choice of trading valuable prospects/young players to make a (very tenuous) run at a championship this season OR keeping the prospects and missing the post-season, but building a team long-term.

Which would you choose?

we can contend this year and we can build for the future. so i say we can do both

Even if the Yankees had lots of prospects to deal, there's not a lot of quality pitching out there to be had in a deal. Guys like Zito can't be touched until their teams are out of a race. The Marlins won't give Willis away. Things will heat up by July 15.

Here's a question to all Yankee fans, do you think it's a good idea to put in Matsui again in August or do you think he should be out for the whole season to recover more?

Which do you think?
