Joe Torre is committed to giving Melky Cabrera a long look in leftfield while Hideki Matsui mends, and Bernie Williams and Bubba Crosby will share right once Crosby finishes his rehab assignment.
That’s fine for now, but what should the Yankees do going forward? I want to get your take, Yankees fans, on a plan I would consider putting into place this season, or, if that’s not possible, next.
The Yankees should trade Cabrera and whatever else it would take (other than Phil Hughes, who is their only decent chance at developing a No. 1 starter in years) to the Twins for Torii Hunter. They should then move Johnny Damon to left.
My argument is this: outfield defense is more important than the Yankees seem to think. With an outfield of Matsui, Damon and Gary Sheffield – which could still be the Yankees’ outfield next season – a lot of balls will fall in that could be outs.
That won’t happen with Hunter in center and Damon in left. Damon is a step slower than in his prime and is not a top defensive centerfielder. He would, however, be a top defensive leftfielder, which is important in Yankee Stadium.
Next season, or whenever he returns, I’d move Matsui to right. He doesn’t have the arm for right, but it’s more important to me that he no longer has the legs for left, which anyone watching Yankees games this season knew before he got hurt.
The downside to this scenario is trading Cabrera before you know what he is and not trading Cabrera for pitching help, which the Yankees may need more than a centerfielder.
What do you think?

No way you trade Cabrera for Hunter. Hunter is in his contract year, I believe, and resigning him will a) cost a lot and b) saddle Yanks with another aging outfielder. I don't think they'll need an offensive boost once Matsui returns, and Cabrera is a perfectly good fielder. I would keep him in left and move Matsui to right for precisely the reasons you mentioned. Cabrera and Thompson can platoon; that'll make a good defensive outfield. I would get rid of Crosby....as much as I love Bubba, I don't think he's better defensively than KT, and he's approaching 30 also. KT is younger and definitely has more upside than Crosby.
If you absolutely must, trade for pitching, as that's what the Yanks need most. Even then, I'd try to hang onto Cabrera and other top prospects if at all possible.
Finally, Sheffield's option should not be picked up. He's a bad defender, and signing him to DH is also not practical because Giambi should DH as much as possible.
No way, Jose! It's terrible idea.
I agree defense is important, but if we want defense, we have Bubba Crosby. He gets the league minimum, and he chases down everything in three area codes.
As for hitting:
Hunter: .257/.329 /.420
Crosby: .263/.333 /.342
Yes, Hunter has a little more pop. But Crosby's numbers are likely to improve if he gets regular ABs.
The difference is not worth paying millions of dollars and Melky Cabrera for.
Nonsense. Trade whatever for Hunter except Hughes.
Did i mention nonsense?
Trade whatever for Hunter = going down the well-trodden path that Yanks have been following. i.e., load up on over-the-hill overpaid superstars, then be stuck paying them buckets of money they don't deserve (See: Johnson, Randy; Brown, Kevin).
The Yankees don't need another outfielder. They need a starting pitcher.
Also, panicking and going into "Let's trade everyone for somebody!!!!" shows we completely ignored what happened last year. IIRC, Yanks stunk last year right around this time (below .500, really really bad) and everyone was clamoring for radical changes. What did Cash do? Bring up Cano and Wang. Sure, it took a while for the kids to adjust, but once they did they were fine. Who's to say this year won't follow the same pattern. A trade will probably have to be made for a starting pitcher, but we absolutely do not need another outfielder!
Relax, Yankee fans. The sky is not falling, the world is not ending, we are still just a game out, no one is running away with the division. Relax.
"Relax, Yankee fans. The sky is not falling, the world is not ending, we are still just a game out, no one is running away with the division. Relax."
I think the Yankees fans are relaxed, it's the media running with this kind of speculation and wild trade rumors.
we need pitching desperately, we can't trade for someone that will make up for either sheffield or matsui's offensive output. Randy is awful now so we have 2 legitamite starters (Wang, Muss) we need a third. Perhaps we can look to the braves who are all but out of the pennant race in the east (Tim hudson)
If I am trading propects; then I want pitching. The Yankees have enough offense and Cabrerra is doing fine in left. I i am tading him it would have to be for a starter. Cashman should ask for Zito or Willis. I just wish the Yankees never made the trade for Johnson. I never liked the trade. I think the Yankees gaveup on Vasquez too soon.
Let's look to the Nationals for immediate needs. Soriano can come in and help this year and if we dont want to keep him, we dont have to. Livan Hernandez is an inning eating machine and he isn't in the future plans in DC. The Nats need a left feilder for the future ie Melky or Bubba and could possibly want Eric Duncan as a first baseman replacement for our old friend Nick Johnson. If only we could wrangle another right handed middle releiver in this deal it makes all the sense in the world and shouldn't cost much.
Unlike other fans, I am not opposed to trading Melky if we can obtain other proven young talent in return. And I like the idea of adding Torii Hunter - but as for now I would use most of our chips for a top of the rotation starting pitcher. Of the young players on the current roster, the only one I would not be willing to include in such a trade would be Wang. In the right trade I would even include Cano - who I feel is over valued. He may hit .300, but he has a low OBP because he won't take a walk and he is only an average 2B.
We need to improve our dfense and pitching. Hunter could be a piece to that, but only a piece.
I like Hunter, but go for a cheaper option (eg Reggie Sanders) How can anyone sanely compare Crosby w/Hunter? Career minor leaguer with a GREAT def CF. It's all moot point anyway. 3rd place right around the corner. 6-8 games back by A/S break. Mussina back to his pitching level of the last 3 yrs-mediocre. Johnson-DONE (16M next yr too) Wang no K, average. Wright-5 innings & Chacon, pitching like Rockie days. Bullpen AWFUL (Farnsworthless et al) Needs too great to fill!
I have always liked the idea of bringing in Torii to patrol C.F. for the next 4-5 years, but not in a trade that involves Melky and or Hughes. Those 2 chips should be saved for acquiring a proven pitcher. And while were on the subject of getting a pitcher, the Yanks should stay away from any and all NL pitchers. The AL hitting talent is so superior to the NL, that it's like comparing AAA to the Majors. Trade for pitching first, then get Torri with the "chips" you have left. The Twins don't have the money to keep him, so they can't drive to hard a bargain.
You didn't mention what you would do with Hunter next year? If they were to trade Melky which I feel comfortable with as he doesn't look like he will have much power. It should be for a front line pitcher.
Hunter's overrated and overpriced. He's not as good as he used to be.
If we want an OFer, go for someone cheaper. Craig Wilson of the Pirates, maybe. No way do we need to mortgage the farm for an OFer.
Forget about Hunter ! After
the Big Needs are taken of
go get another TWIN Kyle Lohse. He's better than Chacon was last year and he
and his agent Scott Boras are deliberately having him
pitch bad so the TWINS trade
him on the cheap!GOOGLE the
RUMORS!
If I'm going to trade a top prospect like Melky Cabrera, I want a top pitching prospect. The Yankees can't survive off old players forever. They need some young guys, deffintly.
Your site is great
This might possibly be the worst idea i've ever heard...hunter is ageing and cant hit, cabrara is worth holding on 2 for various reasons. And if we trade we dont go for hunter. We should go for someone to replace sheffield not someone who puts matsui in right bc that would let ppl run all over us. Maybe someone like "El Cubayo" Carlos Lee, put him in right and enjoy 35+ homers and 100+ RBI's. But more likely we could use another stater bc chacon leaves everythiong up in the zone and if he makes the smallest mistake the pitch is hung and he gets crushed. Johnson and Mussina are ageing, and Jaret Wright is Jaret Wright, and Carl Pavano is as sturdy as a feather. So we could use a pitcher which then we could get rid of cabrara but not for hunter. But keep cano, wang, and hughes. Dont give the up for anything!
And also nice site in general
This is a ludicrous idea. This is so typical of your New York writers, trade an up anc coming star for a star in his prime only to find out he doesn't put up the same numbers in pinstrips aka Alex Rodriguez. Milky is growing up in the pressure of New York. He has been groomed in the Yankee culture aka Bernie Williams. When he has matured he will be every bit as valuable as Tori.
I'll only say this: the yankees do not need anything offense at this point. There is only one thing that our yanks have to get, and thats pitching. If they do any trading it had better be for some much need pitching.
Leaving corporate America to run a homebased business is the ideal situation for many people: There's no boss breathing down your neck, no boring meetings to attend and no 45-minute drives in rush hour traffic. Working from home can be a rewarding experience, but it's easy to forget the basic rules of running a successful business when it's 10 hours of just you, your computer and the distractions of home. Read More...

The Yanks need a clean up hitter. Trade Johnny Damon and money for Andrew Jones. Then sign Barry Zito as a free agent.Get Chone Figgins for Melky Cabrera and prospect. Chone has speed and he could play anywhere in the field (3rd). Get Johan Santana for IanKenedy,Mike Mussina and Luis Vizcanio because now have a Joba to do 7 and 8.
