Let's not get ahead of ourselves and start saying how the Mets kids are better for a half-season's worth of great work.
On a different note, anyone at Newsday following the whole "David Justice ordered to rip A-Rod on Al Yankzeera" story? If it is true, David Justice has lost pretty much all credibility as an analyst/commentator in my eyes. Granted, what Justice said was what fans have been saying everywhere, including this blog, but to call a guy out on orders from above--on the pretense that it was his own opinion--that's straight out of the Pravda.
If you go by experience, it's Jeter and A-Rod and both with post season games under their belts. Reyes and Wright have good upside but time will tell.
I'm a Yankee fan. Hopefully, I can be objective. Is the left side of the Met infield a good one. It sure is, no question. But in my mind, how do two young guys with limited experience, no longevity and titles of any consequence match up with two veterans with a complete resume. To me its more media hype then anything. The Mets are having a great year the Yankees have had ten great years and Jeter is the glue to all of it. I believe even the Mets left side would agree its a little too early for comparisons. You can throw stats onto paper but Jeter and A-rod bring the unmeasurable to the table. Yes, been there done that does not equate do lacking in excitement, joy for accomplishment or desire.
If yo uwere to pick an all star team now....and had to pick from the four players in question...You would take Jeter and A-Rod over Reyes and Mr. big mouth.
Met fan here. I have never hated the Yankees but did not actually appreciate them as much as I have since Jeter. I like the Mets young players and appreciate even more that they know enough to downplay comparison to Jeter. Best clutch player I ever seen since Roberto Clemente. A-Rod will get his chance to be clutch. He will deliver.
lets not get ahead of ourselves here. we got the reigning MVP and one of the best hitters & players in baseball on our left side. we wouldnt be having this conversation if reyes didnt go on that week long hot streak. he was batting like .245 before that. lets see him mantain a .290 average this season.
now david wright is a ridiculous hitter who in time will be the best 3B in the game. not yet, let him do it in the postseason
As a Met fan, I'll try to be objective...First, let's take the World Series out of the equation since Reyes and Wright have not played in one...for that matter neither has A-Rod. Reyes has more speed and is a better fielder, while Jeter has the intangibles and always seems to deliver whatever is needed...A-Rod has great stats, but no matter where he's played, he's never won anything and he's no Mr. October, while Wright has proven to be better in the clutch. If push comes to shove...It's Reyes and Wright by a whisker.
Forget limiting the discussion to just the left side of the infield. The question should be," Who has the better team?" After that "Fiasco in Fenway," I have to go with the Yanks. Milledge, the so-called "best prospect in all of baseball," looked like he needed a guide dog out there in left. We keep hearing how the Yankee farm system is empty. I'll stack Melky or Phillips up against Milledge anytime. Oh, by the way, was that Pedro pitching or Kevin Brown?
Two guys who have had clear HOF careers versus two guys who have done almost nothing? I think the answer is pretty clear...
The Mets are not what they think they are. Their pitching is no day at the beach. In the weak division they're in, they should win but come post season time, they'll fold like a cheap suit. In all due respect, they have some good players but only lady luck will get them a World Championship.
