First half Most Valuable Players
1. Derek Jeter
2. Jason Giambi
3. Mike Mussina

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Shawon Chacon
2. Carl Pavano
3. Carl Pavano's visionary

Biggest surprise of the first half? I knew he'd be good, but he's better -- Chien Ming Wang

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed? They need to remain healthy and Unit has to be dominant for 7 innings a game while Farnsworth needs to "ace" the 8th inning.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline? A pitcher, probably someone like a Mike Timlin type and they should trade Pavano and his luck to do it. However, I would like to see Carlos Lee in Pinstripes and that might cost too much in prospects.

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings. 94-68, 2 games out and out of the playoffs, but only becasue Detroit never slowed down, the ChiSox staff is too deep and the Red Sawx have David Ortiz.

First half Most Valuable Players
1. Derek Jeter
2. Jason Giambi
3. Mike Mussina

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Shawon Chacon
2. Kelly Stinnett
3. Randy Johnson

Biggest surprise of the first half?
Melky

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed?
Let Bubba/Thompson/Reese play RF. Use Bernie off the bench or as DH.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline?
No big trade. With Cashman calling the shots (hopefully) the Yanks will not give up the long term for the the short term.

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings

97-65. The Yanks are only 3 games out despite the loss of Matsui and Sheff. They're playing a lot more small ball recently. This team is beginning to remind me of '96. I say 1st place by a game or two.

First half Most Valuable Players
1. Derek Jeter
2. Johnny Damon
3. Mariano Rivera

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Carl Pavano
2. Tanyon Sturtze
3. Kelly Stinnett

Biggest surprise of the first half? Jaret Wright. I thought he'd be another Pavano.

Runner up: Andy Phillips.

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed?

Hide Bernie Williams' glove. Or donate it to Cooperstown. Just do not allow him to use it.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline?

Umm...someone completely unexpected.

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings.

We'll be #1.

MVP
1. Mussina
2. Jeter
3. Giambi

LVP
1. Pavano
2. Stinnett
3. Chacon

Pleasant Surprise
1. Wang
2. George Steinbrenner (closed mouth)

We need to get healthy and remain healthy. Assuming matsui and Sheff are no help. A-rod must do more timely hitting too many strikeouts. Starting pitching must have at least 4 consistent innings producers to refresh the bullpen.

I would acquire a more consistent backend starter to replace Chacon or bring up from minors. Give it a whirl. Do not know who is available in pitching. I would trade for Audrey Huff from Tampa Bay. The guy is 28 and a good producer with the bat. He can play Rf,1B and 3B. 3b his weakest, no problem there. Tampa may be looking to dumb his large salary. Andy Phillips plus a surplus outfielder and cash to Tampa.

Our record will be 97-65 with a narrow victory over Boston for Al East crown. As Ortiz can not continue his MVP clutch hitting.

im sorry i dont have all my mvps but i just had to laugh that someone put kelly stinnet as a least valuable player.

lol hes the backup catcher, what were u expecting out of him? how is he less valuable than like kyle farnsworth whose blown several games?

if i had to have 3 mvps theyd be

jeter
mussina
melky/bernie (without there performances in the field and at the plate i dunno where wed be)

3 lvps would be
farnsworth
pavano
chacon

Wow, these are some great posts. I agree with about 95% of everything written.
Here's my 2 cents: Kevin Thompson wins the everyday
RF job, Giambino hits 50,and Phil Hughes is called up in August and
goes 7-1, a la rookie Mel
Stottlemyre in '64 (you
could look it up). 95-67, miss by 3-4 games. Re-tool during the winter with Zito and Soriano.

I put Stinnett mainly because I think they chose him for the wrong reasons. They picked him because Randy Johnson had success with him in the past. But RJ and Jorgie patched up their differences, and Stinnett's biggest reason for being on team was no more.

Stinnett actually has gotten some clutch hits once in awhile, so maybe I shouldn't have listed him. But the only others I could think of to put down were pitchers, and I didn't want to list all pitchers. :)

First half Most Valuable Players
1. Rivera
2. Jeter
3. Mussina

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Pavano
2. Chacon
3. Farnsworth

Biggest surprise of the first half?

Melky

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed?

Reliable efforts from starters; timely and clutch hitting.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline?

Bullpen help

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings.

97-65, first.

phillip hughes got roughed up in the futures game. 1 inning 3 er. hit pretty hard too. he has sick stuff tho, just got some pitches up.

jose tabata tho the yankees 17 yr old cf in AAA ripped a single up the middle that almost hit hughes and from what i saw handles the bat very well. i think he should be untouchable as well as hughes

MVPs

1) Mussina
2) Giambi
3) Jeter

LVPs

1) Small
2) Chacon
3) Proctor

Biggest surprise: Posada's resurgence.

To succeed in the 2nd half: They need a fifth starter.

I have no idea who they will acquire.

1st place: 96-66

MVP: 1. Jeter continues to prove why all those people who call him overrated don't know what the hell they are talking about. 2. Giambi keeps coming up with clutch hit after clutch hit, playing like the MVP he once was, and assuaging the absence of Matsui, Sheffield, and the real A-Rod. 3. I am scared to think of where the Yanks will be when Mariano retires.

LVP: 1. Pavano. Has anyone else ever missed so much time because of a bruised butt? 2. Middle Relief. Way too many blown leads or failed holds. 3. Chacon. What happened?

Biggest Surprise? 1. Bernie--did anyone think he'd be this good and play this important a role? 2. Melkie. 3. Andy Philips.

For the Second Half: Forget about big trades. I'd love to have Soriano back but not for Hughes. The Yankees need A-Rod to stop over-thinking and start playing like one of the top three players in baseball again. They need Farnsworth to step up and they need Proctor, Villone, et al to stop coughing up leads.

Prediction: Unless A-Rod gets the Zoloft prescription needed to cure his hititng neuroses, Chacon learns to pitch again, and Dotel shores up the middle relief, the Yanks will come up just short. It would help if all those Red Sox kid pitchers fell back to earth one of these days.

Either way I hope the Yanks stand pat and stick with the youth movement. Wang and Cano are the real deal, Philips looks capable, Melky's got tons of potential, and Hughes is on the horizon.

Hopefully we can snag Zito and Soriano as free agents this off-season.

First half Most Valuable Players
1. Derek Jeter
2. Jason Giambi
3. Mike Mussina

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Shawon Chacon
2. Kelly Stinnett
3. Kyle Farnsworth

Biggest surprise of the first half?
Take your pick:
Melky, Giambi, Bernie, Wang, Moose, or Steinbrenner leaving Cashman and Torre alone.
To succeed in the second half: another starter and for Dotel to make a good comeback providing a bridge to Mo.
I think they will acquire John Smoltz.
1st Place 94-68

First half Most Valuable Players
1. Mike Mussina
2. Jason Giambi
3. Mariono Rivera

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Pavano
2. Chacon
3. Farnsworth (good try tho!)

Biggest surprise of the first half?
Melky Caberara, no doubt

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed?

Mostly we need a 5th consistent starting pitcher, we need farnsworth to become more reliable, and our bats need to be more hot to make up for our shitty bullpen

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline?
Who the hell knows? Uhh santana

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings.
92-70

First half Most Valuable Players
1. Moose
2. Jetes
3. Sand Man

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Pavano
2. Chacon
3. Small

Biggest surprise of the first half? That pavano, Chacon and Small gave the Yankees nothing, absolutely nothing. And, a close second, is they are still in striking distance despite the losses of Matsui, Sheff and Cano.

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed? They need to win while the Red Sox lose. Simple as that. They can't lose pace any more.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline? Abreu. His contract is outrageous and the Yankees do ot have to give up much to get him. Plus, they can afford him with Sheff's salary slot.

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings. 94-68 and 1 game out. They will dread the loss to Washington where they gave up a 9-2 lead.

First half Most Valuable Players
1. wang
2. giambi
3. mussina

First half Least Valuable Players
1. pavano
2. chacon
3. arod

is it wrong of me to say i'd rather have brosius than arod?

Biggest surprise of the first half?
melky

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed?
arod needs to hit better, and longer outings by the starters.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline?
no one big, maybe a reliever. in the winter, i'd like to see zito here.

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings.
97 wins. wild-card. detroit falls apart.

First half Most Valuable Players
1. Mariano Rivera
2. Derek Jeter
3. Mike Mussina

First half Least Valuable Players
1. Shawn Chacon/Aaron Small/Tanyon Sturtze
2. Hideki Matsui/Gary Sheffield
3. Terrence Long/Scott Erickson

Biggest surprise of the first half?
-All of the injuries, and still only three games out.

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed?
- Solid, consistant pitching from the starters and bullpen.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline?
- Barring Cashman not dealing Hughes, the names I read about include Abreau, Gordon, Piniero, and Cruz Jr.

Predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings.
99-63, winning the division.

MVP:

Jeter
Rivera
Mussina

LVP:

Farnsworth
Chacon
Small

Surprise:
No sophomore slump for Cano.

2nd half:
Johnson needs a 2nd half like he had last year. Farnsworth needs to turn into Nelson, Stanton, and Gordon. Dotel needs to contribute. Matsui and/or Sheff need to come back in September.

Trades:
I don't see any big trades happening. Maybe a couple small ones like for a serviceable outfielder or a righty set up man or maybe a 4th or 5th starter along the lines of Chacon from last year.

Prediction:
95-67, 1st place in AL East by 2 games over Toronto. 27th World Championship.

With today marking the final game before the All-Star break, bringing a very interesting first half to an end, let's mark the occasion with some awards. Here's the categories, you make your choices, and I'll weigh in with mine.

1.Shawn Chacon
2.Aaron Small
3.Kyle Farnsworth

Biggest surprise of the first half?
Melky

What needs to happen in the second half for the Yankees to succeed?
Farnsworth needs to be ace. Get new outfielder or starting pitcher.

Who will the Yankees acquire in a trade before the July 31 deadline?
I think Yankees can aquire Joel Pineiro and Alfonso Soriano.

And predict the Yankees' final regular-season record and place in the standings.
100-62, 27th ws and 5 games over Blue Jays
