A Long, Strange Tripp

Newsday sports writer Tripp Mickle offers his take on "Boss Watch," a curious practice that happens at Yankees home games attended by George Steinbrenner. Reporters from area newspapers, including Newsday, wait outside Yankee Stadium's press entrance before and after games to shout questions at The Boss, who rarely grants regular interviews anymore. Sometimes he answers, sometimes he doesn't.

Yankees security has a new twist on the old “we-must-protect-this-house” motto. Instead, they must protect The Boss.
On Saturday night, a group of reporters working the Steinbrenner Stakeout got too close to The Boss when doing their job, which involves loitering outside Yankee Stadium before and after the game in hopes he’ll speak to them. As a result, a new barrier was erected last night, corralling the media farther away from Steinbrenner’s point of exit and making it even harder to hear him if he chooses to speak.
More than that, there are indications The Boss may be trying to outfox the reporters. During his last two visits to town, he’s made a point of getting to night games before most members of the media arrive.
Yesterday, that meant three reporters – myself included – were stuck outside staring at his Lincoln Town car, concerned they had missed him.
“Is he coming?” I asked.
“It doesn’t look like it,” a reporter from the Post shrugged and a Daily News reporter nodded in agreement.
In the end, it turned out The Boss outfoxed the media again. He was already in his office.
But we'll be back after the game.

Maybe the Yankees should also construct an A-Rod barrier every time he decides to speak to the media.

I am a big Yankee fan and like A-Rod but since when is hitting a fly ball with the bases loaded coming up big?

If Andy Phillips hit the fly ball against a pitcher he is 0 for 12 against, I would call it coming up big. I think it overstates the play when A-Rod does it.

If you make the big bucks, expectations are higher. That is just the way it is.

respek mark. when arod does something "clutch" in the playoffs ill applaud. as for his miraculous almost-hit a grand slam, he is still useless in my mind. and id call it clutch if we won by that one run, but we won by 5. it is against the norm though, i will say that. the arod of earlier this year would have more than likely struck out on 3 straight pitches in that same situation. well gee wiz isnt he just great.
as for steinbrenner, the guy is a joke. i cant wait for him to retire and i can only hope his son-in-law wont be as useless as him. why cant we get billy beane. steinbrenner should make that his last investment.

George S. probably needs some protection from the media because of his advancing years. He couldn't hold his tongue before. And may cause the Yankee ship to sink with his loose lips.

On another note, making a big deal out of A-rods sacrifice fly is a bit much just as his being booed by some yankee fans for not driving in runs when every opportunity is presented. There should be a balance but we no better in NY to expect a balance with winning and the pinstripes. I see some positiveness with his play of late especially the bat. It is so rediculous that we NYers get national exposure for booing the best player in baseball. There isn't a team if affordability was not an issue that would not want him to wear their unform. Think of A-rod in Fenway and the green monster while playing his natural position. The wall would go from green to black and blue from all the shots peppering the Green Monster.

You guys are sick with hatred. It's pathetic. It just goes to show - no matter what A-Rod does, you haters will hate. It's what gives me comfort in your pathetic little lives.

stop booing arod. please.

How ironic that the Yankees chose the anniversary of Babe Ruth's death to "break ground" for the "new" Yankee Stadium. How sad.
