The latest on the $40 million bust named Carl Pavano:
The pain he felt under his armpit is actually two fractured ribs suffered in a car wreck two weeks ago, on the morning of August 15, not from his West Palm Beach home. He hide the injury and car wreck from the Yankees until Saturday when he just so happened to be nearing his return to the Yankees. We report, you decide.
The Yankees understandably are furious at him and put him on a conference call with reporters just now to defend himself. He said he hates being a distraction. But he didn't sound ready to apologize to his teammates or anything. More on that later.
And expect the Yankees to hand him a fine.
As for the ribs, Pavano has another doctor's appointment tomorrow and as long as he is cleared he will be pitching for Columbus Wednesday and then will join the Yankees. If you have to see it to believe it, we understand. More to come.

so, pavano hears he is coming back and to stop it, he just confesses he was in an accident, why play for his money when he gets it for free, and he can in a way force a trade since he has ticked them all off, he can go back to the national league to a bad team, with no pressure and rich for life, go quickly, yanks rue the day they signed you
What was Pavano doing... driving around looking for a sushi bar ?
Wonder what will happen when he is completely healed? He'll find a way to hurt himself ala Kevin Brown....
He can throw a strike to Allyssa Milano, yet he can't get to the seven eleven without busting something since. This guy needs to go 25-2 over the next year and a half just to get out of the doghouse! Maybe the ribs are what is making his ball move. I volunteer to sucker punch him under the arm before every start if it works.
Assuming the Yankees were smart enough to verify all of Pavano's prior injuries that occurred while a member of this team. I cannot make the assumption that Pavano is trying to avoid pitching on the major league level. I would avoid the knee jerk decision to dump him. There will be a fine without a doubt. Reading the ESPN account of the story. Pavano's indication of why he didn't tell the Yanks is plausible but not bright. Fractured ribs how bad can it be when the guy was throwing consistent 90/91 mph. The guys a jerk, a little boy in a man's body but maybe he can still pitch. I wait until the hot stove season before making a decision. He still has to pitch to show value. This is the delemna that the yanks face. The yanks have a spotty record with FA pitching signings at best. We must develope from within and be ever careful with FA pitching signings.
one thing we rarely mention about randy johnson is how he has taken the ball virtually every fifth day since he arrived here while wright and pavano did their thing. if pavano had randy's heart, he might be back by now.
give him his start in columbus, then throw him out there at the stadium five days later. he's set himself up to fail and has no one to blame but himself.
You know I agree with this last comment about Randy Johnson and I would even add Jared Wright to that equation. These guys along with Mussina and Wang take the ball every 5th day, and whether we like the guys personally or not they give it there all to win a baseball game. Pavano unfortunately is not made of the same stock and I would suspect that the Yankees wish very much they could reverse the decision to sign him.
I agree with the last two posts, and as much as it might pain people to hear it, the same can be said of A-Rod. This guy is mired in the most miserable slump of his career, but at least he's out on the field every day. Pavano seems to conveniently have something go wrong whenever he gets close to rejoining the club. This guy is the Loch Ness Monster of the Yanks: I'll believe he's going to pitch for them when he actually tosses one to Posada from the mound.
They need to wrap him up with bubble wrap but don't forget to punch some holes or else he'll suffocate.
Living outside of Raleigh, I was going to go watch Pavano pitch for Columbus against the Durham Bulls. I'll make sure that I leave a box of Fresh-Start kitty litter outside of the clubhouse.
