Its a stigma of being a Yankees fan - you always hear "Well, you SHOULD win with a $200 + million payroll!" or "THAT is the reason MLB should have a salary cap!"
How many owners are richer than Steinbrenner? Most of them? The Yankees franchise makes a ton of money, so a ton of money is spent. Next time you see a seven-figure-salaried neurosurgeon driving a dinged-up '94 Tercel, give me a call.
In case you people are not aware, the foolish Yankees are making less money than the KC Royals.
I remember reading that last year, the Royals org. made turned a $20 mil. profit while the Yankees lost over $50 mil.
You can win if you spend money wisely and make smart player personnel decisions.
With the money they have to spend, if they weren't so boneheaded with the bad decisions on and off the field, then they would have won more WS the last 5 years.
ERIC- I'm sure all Royals fans are dancing in the street, knowing their team made a 20 million dollar profit, yet continues to be the "laughing stock" of the AL. Obviously, that money is not going into the team we see on the field. The Royal's owner\David Glass, made billions while running Walmart with a nickle and dime mentality. That is fine in the retail business, it doesn't work in the sports world.
Just basic business philosophy. You have to spend money to make money. George is happy with a reasonable profit as long as the paying fans are happy. Lost in revenue contribution is the fact that the Yankees consistently lead MLB in road attendance and like any other team get 20% of that.
The Yanks' "not making money" does not count revenues from the YES Network.
Ben K. is 100 percent correct.
ERIC,STOP DEPRESSING YOURSELF, IT'S TIME FOR A REALITY CHECK. THE YANKS CONTROL THE MARKET AND FORCE OTHER TEAMS TO COMPETE. YES NETWORK,THE MOST SUCCESSFUL REGIONAL SPORTS NETWORK IN THE COUNTRY WITH $257 MILLION IN AD REVENUE.YANKEES HAVE DOUBLED THEIR REGULAR SEASON ATTENDANCE IN THE LAST 11 SEASONS.
I'm just saying the Yankees are not spending their money wisely and efficiently.
Over the past few years, they have made lots of player personnel mistakes.
The only reason why they've been successful is because they were able to cover up those mistakes by spending even more money.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that if they made better decisions in the first place, then they wouldn't need to spend so much money.
I have been a Yankee fan forever, but I hate the payroll. Hate it.
Part of the spending problem has been George's braintrust in Tampa. Businessmen of the highest order, yet baseball men? NOT! Since turning ALL of the reins over to Cash and his staff we have seemingly made some very right calls. Give Cash time and I dont see you saying these things in say 2-3 seasons. The minors are getting restocked, pitching galore is being stockpiled at the lower levels, trades will be made this year to improve that even more. I think this organization is on track for a new reign. Eric take your medicine! Somedays it seems you just hate being a yankee supporter. I cant call you a fan, you seem to be a sideline basher-Arod booer-STEROID yelling Bosock hat wearing guy sometimes.
Don't be silly Andy.
I just tell it like it is.
If you think everything is fine, then you have your head in the sand.
They haven't reach their goal--which is to win the WS--in five years.
They have a runaway payroll with mostly old players, who's aging really fast and breaking down even faster.
Better to point out the faults so maybe we can improve the team.
In fact, you should appreciate that the Yankees have fans like myself.
I do agree with you on Cashman.
I think the decisions from now on (as long as there's no pressure from the top) will be more well thought-out and not as impulsive.
Btw, I never advocated booing A-Rod.
Okay Eric..I'll givre you your due, you are straight on. Just show alittle love now and then!
Well, thank goodness for Bruney, Wang and Proctor. They were all excellent this year and for a cheap rate. Everyone else should be ashamed at those salaries, considering what firemen and police make. Everyone runs away from danger. They run into danger. These outrageous salaries just show the power of advertising and of course the idolatry we have as fans. It's as old as the golden calf and it's in our DNA. Just ask Moses. And by the way, how much do teacher's make? Nurses? Hmmm ...
