And the offseason begins

Here's an email from the Yankees...

sally.jpg"The Yankees announced today that infielders Andy Cannizaro and Nick Green have been outrighted to Triple-A Scranton and that Green has elected free agency. Additionally, catcher Sal Fasano (whose contract extended through 2006) has also elected to become a free agent."
Funny to see Triple-A Scranton, right?

Also funny to see Fasano without his mustache. In any event, the Yankees are now officially in the market for a backup catcher. Bring John Flaherty out of booth? :)

Sal Fasano looks a little like Ken Davidoff . Are they related? Married? Oops Pardon me for prying men...but Matt Cain is considered the number one pitcher for the Giants, also the Giants are experiencing a Liriano "backlash" rumbling through Willie Mays plaza. They will not trade a young Type A starter away. For anyone to understand this all they have to do is very basic research, Ken...
The Yankees have a better chance of getting Matt Morris but they will have to take on the enormity of his contract. Arod for Morris? Morris is from New York. Both need a change of scenery.
Yankees cannot expect much for trading Arod.
Sorry, no Matt Cain Jim and Ken.
Ervin Santana? Angels would be silly to make that move as well.

Back-up catcher...isn't Joe Girardi available...he can also replace Torre next April !

I'd love to see them sign a backup catcher who can actually hit his weight, so that Posada can get more of a break without losing too much. I would love a Gregg Zaun or someone like that.

The Yankees don't have a catcher in the system ready for the big club so it seems like the best way to go is to sign a free agent as a backup to Posada to cut down on the amount of games he's behind the plate to save his legs for the postseason. The best bets seem to be either former D-Ray Toby Hall who knows the AL East or Mike Lieberthal of the Phillies. Both will be free agents.

Just out of curiousity...would Fasano get a starting job somewhere else? Is he retiring? Is there no interest by the Yanks to bring Fasano back for 2007, or is there no interest by Fasano to come back to NY? I mean, when you get a player who almost lays down behind the plate, has a cool mustache, and named his kid Enzo, you should keep him, right?

Fasano was great! I love his catching style and he's pretty quick behind the plate for a guy his size. And he worked well with Wright. It's unfortunate that when Posada is out of the game you loose some offense but any catcher will tell you that he'd rather have a starter get through 6 or 7 innings in a solid start than hit homeruns. There is so much offense coming from the rest of the line up do we need another bat? Bring back Sal!! Or give Nieves a try! It's hard to have a guy to come off the bench to catch once a week and expect him to get hits. He gets less than 100 at-bats. How many ABs did Fasano get? It's hard to get into a groove. Any chance we can get a Molina? (NOT) They seem to have a knack for coming of the bench and contributing offensively and they are all great behind the plate. It must be in their genes.

mike kay is right joe torre is so lucky to have the best of everything, and he still doesn't win.get rid of him now

in fact get rid of sheff, johnson, giambi, williams, lidle and torre and his whole staff bring back zimmer

I liked Fasano as the backup. He was quick like a cat with a decent arm. He can hit but the opportunities are just not there. His long swing needs many at bats to be timely. I thought Nieves would have a better bat but weaker in the defense and manageing the game. The backup catcher has to be very understanding of his spot on the team and give up his pride for the good of the team. Zaun would be great but wants more playing time than Fasano was given.

hey LARRY GET A LIFE

The fact that we can make light about the back-up catcher position and not worry about it too much is a great tribute to Jorge Posada. It's sad that many fans don't appreciate this solid, professional champion for the true Yankee that he is. Once he does break down, it will be very difficult to replace him.

You will never get equal value for A-rod. And his numbers offensively in a subpar year will not be matched. Defensively the year was an aberration of his talent. No guy playing third could compete with A-rod. So, let show patience and work with the pitching that comes around. We will be there at the end.

Yankee fans have to consider this note with regards to pitching. Every year, there is a pleasant surprise. Wang, Proctor?
Nobody mentioned those folks too much. Maybe Hughes becomes a bullpen monster in 2007.
Consider how that would change the dynamics of the team.
I would like to see the Yankees form a staff that has different looks. It keeps other teams off-balance and creates plus scenarios for Torre.

The Yankees will need to act faster than ever this offseason. There's too many teams that will be looking for missing parts starting with all the teams that made the playoffs. The Mets are in dire need of pitching. So are the Cards. The Tigers will be looking for more hitting. The White Sox will want to be back in the playoffs along with the Angels. Although Boston doesn't have much to offer other than Manny Ramirez, they'll want to justify the highest ticket prices in the game. Piniella will want to make a splash in his 1st year with the Cubs like any new manager will want to do. Once Soriano, Zito, Carlos Lee and Schmidt are signed there's not much else teams can do but trade to get better. The winter GM meetings will be the place to be. Cellphone city.
