Forget about Joe Girardi as a Yankee coach. Ken Davidoff reports from St. Louis:
Joe Girardi has decided to stay off the field for a year and spend next season as a broadcaster, a person familiar with the situation told Newsday today. The YES Network is believed to be one of his broadcasting options.
Good news for Mazz.

Dear YES Network,
Please dump David Justice from the broadcast booth now in favor of Girardi and give Al Leiter a bigger role with Yankee broadcasts.
I would love for you to dump Michael Kay as well, but I know that's not going to happen.
Thanks.
After the way Michael Kay has talked about the Yanks lately, I wouldn't be surprised if they got someone else. I'd definitely like it if Girardi came back and Justice left. Agree w/ Anaconda about giving Leiter more air time, he's made for the booth. Bring Cone back too!
Good news for Maz, bad news for the Yankees' chances of winning the World Series anytime soon.
Eric, Joe G was benchcoach in 2005 when the Yanks didn't advance past the 1st round. I like Joe G but his presence as a coach wouldn't change a whole lot. The Yanks have great players, mgr and coaches as it is. What they're missing is enough great starting pitching.
If I ran YES, I'd get rid of Kay and Leiter. I'd add Cone and Joe G. I'd bring in Sterling or Waldron as Kay's replacement.
I guess I should have made my point clearer.
Girardi being a coach is the first step towards becoming the Yankees' manager come next year when Torre is finally gone.
Girardi has the right managerial style that'll give them the best chance to win the WS.
There's no way that Girardi would have turned down managing jobs and come to YES unless he was very sure that he will be Torre's successor after next season. Bad news for Mattingly.
I don't see how coming to YES gives him a better shot at replacing Torre.
I would think that going the route of coach, then manager makes more sense.
It has been sort of a trend lately that people go from the broadcast booth to the managers office, with mixed results. Anyone remember when Joe Torre was a broadcaster, I liked him.
I can't believe anyone would want John Sterling or Suzyn Waldman on TV again, they are horrible. Man, do I miss Frank Messer, Bill White and The Scooter....holy cow! I guess I'm getting old.
I think Girardi wanted the Cubs job since he is from Chicago,so why take a job with a bad team(Nationals)
when he could make money being a broadcaster. As far as managing the Yankees,I think Brian Cashman wants Don Mattingly to follow Joe Torre.
The last thing YES needs is more broadcasters!!They need someone to be the voice of the team, meaning there all of the time like in the old days. When you turn on the game, you never know who is the broadcaster.
After being a manager, why would a guy want to play 2nd banana? He is guaranteed next yrs. salary by the Marlins, so money shouldn't be an issue. The only way Girardi would take a "step down", and go through the rigors of being a coach, is if the Yanks guaranteed he would be their next mgr. Obviously, that guarantee was not made.
I too have fond memories growing up with the scooter, Bill White and Frank Messer. I just think as we get older we tend to disect more of what the on-air personalities are saying. I've have always just enjoyed watching or listening to the game itself not really caring about the announcers. I, of course like most people have some announcers that I like more than others. Right now I really enjoy Ken Singleton's work I think he has a nice flow to his game. I also thought John Flaretty was exceptional this past year in his limited work. I think Michael Kay is good but I sometimes feel he dosen't want to be labeled as a homer so he tries to stir up some negativity about the Yankees. I will admit though during a big game nobody gets me more pumped up than a John Sterling home run call (makes me feel like a kid again) For the most part though you must remember nobody could ever replace the fond memories you have as a kid listening to the great game of baseball.
