Don Mattingly will replace Lee Mazzilli as Yankees bench coach, people with knowledge of the situation told Newsday today.
The promotion brings Mattingly one important step closer to the manager’s seat and solidifies him as the favorite to be Joe Torre’s successor. Torre’s contract expires after next season.
Mazzilli’s run as Yankees bench coach ends after only one season. He was the Yankees first-base coach from 2000-03 before spending a season and a half as the Baltimore Orioles manager.
General manager Brian Cashman, who spent a second consecutive day in meetings with his professional scouts at Yankee Stadium, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Mattingly joined the Yankees coaching staff in 2004 as their hitting coach, a job he’s held for three straight seasons, after spending the previous eight years with his family in Indiana.

Wow! I like the move but I wonder who will be the hitting coach now? I wonder if they'll give Maz the first base coach job if Tony Pena leaves.
None of this helps the Yanks pitch in October but it's all we have right now so I guess it's fun to speculate.
Don's moving up the ladder pretty fast. The Yanks like to keep it in the family. The Yankee management must like what they hear and see with Donnie. We know that he has the work ethic and the players have all spoke highly of his coaching ability. Injuries and poor Yankee teams kept him from achieving so much more in baseball.
Yankees starting to make some noise and the WS is not even complete. The off season should be a winner for activity.
Don-nie Base-ball!!
Don Mattingly taking over after Torre. Great move! one class act following in the footsteps of another. Unfortunately, Mattingly didn't get a chance to play with the team that he watched and help mature in 96. I think he's the guy to have as they build with the next wave of guys from our system. It's closer then You think. Then we can rid ourselves of
A-rods and Sheffields. I would put money on it that Donnie's bench coach will be Girardi. He's proved he can work with young players as well. Should of got manager of the year instaed of being fired for his work in Fla and he's not taking a TV job over another managing position for nothing.
