Watching Carlos Beltran rip a laser of a two-run homer last night, which drove in the only runs in the Mets' 2-0 Game 1 win over the Cardinals, made me think back to the 2004 offseason when Beltran was a free agent. The assumption by everyone inside and outside baseball was that the Yankees were going to be hot and heavy over Beltran, considering Bernie Williams' decline as a centerfielder. But when it came time for Scott Boras' sweepstakes, the Yankees were basically a bystander. Sure you could argue the Yankees signed Johnny Damon a year later, which has helped everybody forget about Beltran. But in retrospect now, do you wish the Yankees inked Beltran?

Since day one, when Beltran signed with the Mets, I regretted that decision. He would have given the Yanks a discount, fer cryin' out loud! And while this year's Damon made that decision seem less terrible, it won't in two years when Damon's just like Bernie with no arm and little of his speed left. Maybe I'll be wrong, but I would have much preferred Beltran for his arm, defense, speed and bat.
Ya sure i regret the decision to get Beltran, but acknowledge and move on...hopefully Tabata will be able to replace damon when his skills deminish like Bernie's...we have some good Young talent in our farm club...we need to start bringing them up more often to mix in with the vets...Melky and Cano were a good start but hopefully soon we will see Hughes, Clippard, and Tabata soon
I regret more that they brought in Sheffield before the 2004 season instead of Vlad...
I second that Fred!!!
Damon gives the Yanks more of what the needed...a lead-off hitter who is a CF.
He also is fantastic to that clubhouse.
Beltran is great but I'm glad the Yanks ended up w/ Damon.
Aaron,
You hit the jackpot. While there was an issue with Vlad's back, he is no pain the butt like Sheff; who's very talented but has a temper problem.
I would have liked to have him, but as Aaron said, no sense in crying over spilled milk.
He did hit a moon shot last night, didn't he? WOW!
I want to see us get younger as the rest of you do and I want pitching, Pitching, PITCHING!!!!!
Who knows? Maybe Johnson has one more great year in him once he gets the surgery. Maybe Pavano will live up to his contract and get the job done. Maybe Cashman trades A-Rod and we get some good, young arms in the deal.
I know; a lot of "maybes".
Beltran's great now and of course in hindsight and after the season he's put together this year (after the arrival of Delagdo) it looks like we missed out. But he struggled like Alex to adjust to the "New York pressure". Would it have taken him longer in the Bronx? Could you imagine having 2 position players "adjusting" to New York? I could hear the "BER-NIE" calls now. It might not have worked out so great.
Damon's worked out great though! Older but he still has the legs to cover Center and he's a great lead off guy. I wish he took a few more pitches in the ALDS though...
I do not regret the decision. Damon is older but Beltran's concern was being a possible flash in the pan. Also, the Yankee lineup offensively should be able to win with some pitching which is the real concern.
I agree 100%. The Yankees don't need another bat and didn't need one when Beltran was available. We've lacked starting pitching the past few years. Wang offers some hope and with a pitcher rich market this off season we should be in better shape come April.
And hopefully the Yankees will stretch Hughes out a little next season to build some arm strength so that if/when he's ready he won't be a 6 and out guy. We need starters to go the distance so that our bull pen will remain strong throughout the year.
There is another regrettable decision by Yankees three years ago.
Sheffield or Vladimer Guerrero?
Remember?
Again, the Yankees made the wrong choice.
So what's new?
The Yanks didn't make the wrong choice between Sheffield and Guerrero because it was Vlad who didn't want to play in NY.
You can't make someobody sign with your team if he doesn't want to play there.
They ended up signing their 2nd option, not their 1st option.
thank you, anaconda, for correctly remembering the sequence of events with vladdie. plus, the new angels owner wanted to sign vladdie in the worst way. not every player wants to sign with the yankees. their agents just want the yankees to boost up the price.
The worst choice was letting Pettitte go in favor of Kevin Brown and Javy Vazquez.
Don't forget Pettitte's elbow. I thought he was through. If hindsight was 20/20. I would have resigned him but Houston was perfect for him though I heard the Yankees were johnny come lately with a repesentative offer.
How's Beltran's fastball? His curve?
Oh, he can't pitch?
Then no -- I don't regret the Yankees' not signing him. Hitting -- three games in the LDS aside -- is not the Yankees' problem. They need young, quality pitching.
tough loss for the mets tonight. hell's bells?
No regrets...
The Yankees need 2 top of the rotation starters. Beltran is not a pitcher so no regrets there. The Yankees problems started after 2003 when they lost Petitte, Clemens and Wells.
Hopefully Brian Cashman can get creative. I expect the Yankees to go after the Japanese starter that is coming on the market via the lottery.
If the Yankees can get the starters then Wang would be the #3 starter. The Yankees should sign Mussina as a #4 starter and consider Johnson a # 5, because he is not any better then that anymore.
The Yanks will be lucky to get one frontline starter, much less two this off-season.
Hypothetically, they could sign Matsuzaka or Zito and perhaps Phil Hughes could win a spot in the rotation by the All-Star break.
I don't think they can count on a kid (Hughes) that has never thrown a pitch in the major leagues, but I heard Cashman on Michael Kay's radio show the other day say that Hughes would be given an opportunity to win a spot in the rotation next season.
This was a big surprise to me because they have been treating him with kid gloves, but Cashman certainly made it sound like Hughes would get his shot next season.
Of course, they aren't going to push him before he's ready and they aren't going to take a physical risk with him because of the lessens taught by the Francisco Liriano and Jon Papelbon arm injuries in August.
Don't be surprised if Hughes is in the rotation by the All-Star break in 2007.
Honestly people, stop bringing Philip Hughes name up.
The more you talk about him and hype him up, the more likely you're setting up yourselves for a letdown should he not turn out to be what you hype him up to be in your minds.
Just watch and enjoy. If everything turns out well, then great, otherwise, he just another youngster among several we need to look at.
Love the way Beltran struck out yesterday, on three pitches with the game/season on the line. Sounds a lot like A-rod at times. Let's see how much heat he gets from the fans and media.
All the Yankee fans who are A-Rod haters need to be more loyal to the Yankees and him becasue he is a part of the team that took us the playoffs AGIAN. We've got to support our guys through the good times and bad. 30+ HR 120+ RBIs and even the 139 SO.
Beltran eventually came around because the fans laid off and he got a friend in the club house, Delgado. The fans gave A-Rod a break this year and he had a pretty good September but he has no friends in the club house (SI article), maybe that's his own fault maybe not.
Let's try something new for a change and not give up on a guy because he hasn't been able to come through in October. Maybe the trust and faith in him after all the terrible stike outs will pay off. He wasn't the only Yankee slugger that went cold against the Tiger pitching staff.
Let's be honest with ourselves the Yankees were facing better pitching then they had and they weren't able to break through or hold a lead.
The Mets just learned that pitching wins in the post season and not hitting. Do you think their fans are screaming for Omar Minaya to trade one of the Carlos who didn't factor into their game 7 dreams for pitching? NOT
Hello, anyone out there! Don't forget the fact that Beltran was an MVP finalist, and a GOLD GLOVE WINNER! How can we possible argue that Damon was the right choice! WAKE UP!!!! As far as pitching, you make up for the lack of with with BETTER offensive options.
