All Bernie, all the time

back0219.jpgSeeking some perspective on this situation, I spoke with bench coach Don Mattingly, who played with a young Bernie. Bernie also lockers in Mattingly's old locker, which also used to be home to such names as Nettles, Guidry and Righetti. Our stories today:

  • Mattingly knows Bernie's deal
  • Matthews: Hard-knock times for Bernie
  • Phillips has perspective
  • A change for Mo

Please give Bernie a rest. It's not like he's Mickey Mantle or Babe Ruth. He likely won't even make the Hall of Fame. So I don't understand the big deal with Bernie Williams. He played good baseball for the Yankees, but now it's time to go. It's time for some new blood to help us win the World Series. That's what it's all about...Winning! This is not a soap opera where there is room for tears. I can't see the Yankees holding a precious spot for Bernie for sentimental reasons when you can get a younger, more athletic player to help us win.

I forgot to mention that if Bernie had played for Kansas City, he would've been considered a good ball player and that's it. Meanwhile, if Mickey Mantle had played for Kansas City, he still would've have been recognized as a great ball player. That's the big difference. Look at Ernie Banks. He never played for a winning team and yet he's in the Hall of Fame. Bernie with or without a great team will never make the Hall of Fame.

Bernie has always been an overrated player. Has anyone ever seen his career World Series average? Do you really think he should've gotten 4 gold gloves?!? The guy has no idea what's going on most of the time as he's living in his own world. It's a joke the Yankee$ actually want him back, they'd be much better off without him. I'm still holding out hope they trade Melky so Bernie can make the team.

Keep the distractions coming!!! LOL at Swindal!

You can tell from the number of posts on the last 2 "Bernie Blogs", that even we "die hard" Yankee fans have grown weary of the "Bernie Watch". It's time to "turn the page", and focus on the next dynasty of young Yankee stars. How's Sanchez and Hughes looking?

For once I agree w/ Roy ,let's move on ,backup catching? Sanchez,Hughes, what about this kid Ohlendorff ? Is he happy to be with the Yanks .His expectations? Stop this dog and pony show!

Yep , the Bernie saga is really growing old! He definately isn't the 4th best outfielder on the team. Move on please;)!

As far as Swindal is concerned.......who cares?
Why was it even worth bringing up in this thread? Oh thats right....because like most Boston fans you live for ANYTHING to help with your inferiority complex...lmao! I hope you enjoyed your series in '04 cause it won't happen again in your lifetime;)! Plus you Sox fans have alot of nerve speaking about Yank fans when you idiots booed the guy who won you the WS! Damon left cause you guys didn't wanna pay your catalyst...real bright...much like the "Big Dig"..lol!

I agree with Roy and ruse,CA. The team must move on and settle those roster spots in need.

I don't get why Bernie can't see the signs. They tried to replace years ago with Lofton. Then they replaced him with Damon.

The fat lady has already sung.

Thanks for the memories Bernie. You were great. Bow out gracefully and return phone calls to your pals already.

I hate how with a great athlete everybody else gets to decide when he should retire. Answer me this, if you had an opportunity to make tons of money doing something you loved, why would you quit even if you're not as good as you once were? If someone's willing to pay Bernie to play, he should only have to answer to himself whether he should keep playing. Same with every athlete out there who gets told by countless fans and sportswriters whether he should keep playing. That's idiotic. Once you're done you can never go back. So hold onto it as long as you can, I say.
If Jerry Rice wanted to keep playing for Seattle, shut up and let him try. If Joe Namath wanted a season with the Rams, that's his prerogative so shut up about it, please. If Bernie decides to suit up for, say, the Royals this year, I'll be happy for him because it's his life, his decision, and his career.

Ah, Graig Nettles - a great Yankee.
