Camp Notes & Quotes

  • Mariano Rivera worked on changeups and sinkers during his bullpen session today, though he continues to insist he is just messing around. We'll see come the regular season. Ron Guidry has been after him for the past year to try a change.

  • Joe Torre indicated that Ron Villone is all but assured a roster spot in the bullpen. Torre said Villone, who is in camp on a non-roster invite, "is way ahead of last spring" in terms of arm strength. If Villone makes the team, that leaves only one spot in the bullpen, and Torre wants to have a legitimate long man. That is good news for Jeff Karstens or Darrell Rasner and bad news for Brian Bruney and Chris Britton.

  • A bunch of Chinese Baseball officials were on the field today, accompanied by team president Randy Levine. Steve Swindal also made an appearance on the field and watched some of batting practice sitting with Joe Torre behind the cage.

Rivera working on "changeups and sinkers", is a result of having lost some velocity, and trying to lessen the stress on his arm. I hope he gains enough confidence in his ability to throw those pitches, to actually use them in "real" games.

    First

Roy, what's up with your "obsession" with "quotation marks?" Also, Rivera each year works on a little two-seamer or something else, he throws it a couple of times early in the season, it gets hit, he goes back to the cutter.

Second - I would deal Villone. If he's impressive this spring, that's great, but he wore down badly last season and with his age there's a great chance of that happening again. I would move him while he still looks impressive.

"Rivera" was throwing 93-95 mph "at" the end of last season, which is the same velocity he's shown "for" several yrs...I am not a big fan of the "Villone"...what's with the quotation marks Roy ?

Camaraderie in the clubhouse is very important to a team. Look at the "bad apples" that we have had over the past few years; Mondesi, Brown, Sheff, Randy. Thank "God" they are gone because they all created "heavy air" in the clubhouse. Doug M. and Andy P. are positive people who will have positive influences.

    Joe,

It's always a question of whether winning teams win because they have camaraderie or if the camaraderie comes from winning.

The Yankees with Munson and Reggie hated each other, but they still won whereas the Red Sox in 2004 legitimately liked each other.

That said, I think with the professionalism on this team the answer will be that they will have a great time if the team is winning and if not, it will be a long summer.

What we have to remember is that players have adapted to the day to day grind. One win or loss in May doesn't stick with them, it can't, it would be like one of us agonizing every mistake we make at our jobs. Fans on the other hand (some of them anyway) do agonize over every loss and even over some wins - we call these fans "crazy" and move on.

Tell that to Reggie and Munson or Gossage and Cliff Johnson or Nettles and Reggie...or Ruth and Gehrig or Stengel and DiMaggio or Jeter and Chad Curtis...comaraderie is a bit overrated ...Cadets,we will have sensitivity training everyday at 4:00 pm.

Winning "heals" a lot of "wounds" don't you all "agree". I haven't "noticed" "Roy" overusing "quotes" at all.
"Roy" don't let "them" pick on "you", you are "good" enough, "smart" enough and "darn it" people "like" you.

    :)

Where the heck is Atticas? Come on back Atticas, we'll stop talking about Andy Phillips, we promise!

    ROY "RULES" !

I "think" we should "have" a "Roy" appreciation "day" for all the "positive" energy he brings to the "upcoming" season. All his "positive" thought and "cheery" notions about how the "season" might progress.

Where would we "be" without "Roy?"

I "propose" that "Thursday" be known as "RAD" which stands for "Roy Appreciation Day" and "everyone" will use "quotes" as if they were "going out of style", while "lamenting" about the "state" of this "horrible" Yankees "team".

Seriously it seems the Yanks might be shaking up the "Pen" ,I don't see Karstens and Rasner as long men and Bruney and Britton being edged out ...trades will likely be made come opening day ....

I "concur" they will be "lucky" to win 80 "games"

You guys have to cut it out! I can't stop howling! I'm splittin' a gut!

Not just trades Ruse, but when was the last time a team was completely healthy all the way through?

It's foolish for Torre to make a proclamation like he did before the first Spring Training game.

    "Seriously"

I get the feeling Roy is sitting somewhere like Steve Buscemi in Billy Madison, with a rifle and a list of all our names written in lipstick

"Chip" that's true ,the "Yanks" have been juggling the 4&5 starters for the last 3 yrs ...they have alot of "talent" to sort thru this spring.

    or Buscemi in "Fargo"

    Lmao @
"Roy" don't let "them" pick on "you", you are "good" enough, "smart" enough and "darn it" people "like" you.

    Stewart Smally:):):)

Joe T. indicating Villone's lock on a spot in the pen. This goes hand and hand with the need for lefties. I just thought there was some room for the Bruney's and Britton's. With 30 ST games to go much can happen with injuries and trades. I 'm just happy there are replacements. Its tough to say about clubhouse chemistry does it come from winning or present before. I believe this team will be a mixed bag. You have some guys like Jeter who are professional in every approach. But guys like John Damon and Doug M. are professionals and want to win but will provide the clubhouse chemistry with the fun and games. This could be good for Arod. Now, Jeter doesn't appear to be a stick in the mud but I doubt he would be the lead on nailing Damon's shoes to the floor.

What's the story with Curtis and Jeter, anyone.

Larry M: You don't remember in 1999 the Yanks and Mariners were involved in an on the field brawl ?Jeter stood off to the side chatting w/ AROD ,it pissed Curtis off who then called Jeter on it in the clubhouse...I just remembered the time El Duque decked Posada in the clubhouse a few yrs ago, they were arguing over pitch selection

Love to see Mo have his worst season yet then becomes a Sox next season!!!

Great news that Villone will get a spot. He's awful.

    Is Swindal sober yet?

"Thanks" "Roy" "for" "getting" "the" "guys" "off" "my" "back"!

You don't remember in 1999 the Yanks and Mariners were involved in an on the field brawl ?Jeter stood off to the side chatting w/ AROD ,it pissed Curtis off who then called Jeter on it in the clubhouse...

He wasn't the only one who was pissed off;)

Hitman: I don't understand why you're repeating what I just said ? If you want to elaborate then do so !

Ruse, Ca. and TheHitMan, I appreciate the reply. I must have a mental block. I liked Curtis. Now, I know why he was traded because he did come through. But that whole team came through. They always got it done.

"He wasn't the only one who was pissed off;)"

    That was my elaboration.....

I should have put what you said in quotes.....anyhow....I was furious that Jeter did that...clear enough?:)

Another thing w/ Curtis and Jeter: Curtis thought he was the "Clubhouse Cop" and "hated" the "rap" music that was "played" at "high volumes" and would go turn it "down". This did not "sit" well with anyone, even "Jeet". "Jeet" confronted "Chad" and nearly came to "blows" over the situation.

All I know from watching ballgame last year when Mike Myers's pitching against his former team, He melts under pressure and lose his concentration. He gave a up homerun to Ortiz twice. He hit his former teammate Mirabelli by giving up winning rin. I think Yankees should trade Myers. Do you think Igawa's can fit that role if Myers is traded as lefty specialist out of the bullpen? Igawa can be first lefty in the bullpen if the Yankees are in the playoffs. What do you think? Should Yankees move Igawa's to bullpen and called up Hughes or Sanchez? Thanks

You can't spend 50 million on one of Japanese baseball best starting pitchers and make him a lefty specialist out of the bullpen!...Myers gave up 3 hrs last yr 1 to Ortiz 1 to Travis Lee and 1 other ...I don't think the Yanks need Myers for what amounts to 30 innings but will definitely not replace him w/Igawa... maybe Henn ,Villone or Chase Wright.Stay Tuned!

Myers gave up 3 HR last year.

    1-Ortiz, Boston
    1-Crawford, Tampa Bay
    1-Tatis, Baltimore

    oops, forgot...

    """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""

    In other words...

"Myers" "gave up" "3 HR" "last year."

    "1"-"Ortiz", "Boston"
    "1"-"Crawford", "Tampa Bay"
    "1"-"Tatis", "Baltimore"

Cash will not trade these "valuable" young arms like Britton, Bruney-I could definitely see Cash moving the "enigmatic" Farnsworth in some type of "deal"

Yankee baseball begins in 9 hrs!!!

    Farnsworth?

There's somebody who's been quiet. Seems the whole camp is somewhat quiet.

    Maybe that's a good thing.

*No quotation marks were harmed in this post*

To B>M: I believe Meyers is a waste of a roster spot. I would prefer a Sean Henn who is lefty and can give us innings. Mr. Meyers throws heat at 79mph. This velocity was gleamed from the radar gun at Yankee stadium. So, it can be off a bit but you get my drift. Trade him.
