Intrasquad Updates

I'll keep a log going until the clubhouse opens in a bit...

FIRST INNING:

Igawa looks smooth. Brett Gardner bunted his first pitch for a single; Igawa was a bit slow covering the bag. But he got Bronson Sardinha to ground into a double play to Derek Jeter. And then Jose Tabata grounded to second base. 7 pitches, 6 strikes.

In the bottom half, with Jeff Karstens pitching, Johnny Damon flies to centerfield. Derek Jeter grounds to second. And Matsui strikes out on what appeared from the press box to be a nasty pitch that tailed away from him.

SECOND INNING:

Igawa works very quickly. Gets the ball, turns around and throws it. A reporter's dream. Anyway, Juan Miranda made the first out by popping out a 2-and-2 pitch to shortstop. Josh Phelps grounded to A-Rod, whose throw to first was picked out of the dirt by sure-fielding Doug Mientkiewicz. And Marcos Vechionacci grounds to Derek Jeter to end the half inning. So assuming Igawa is done, he allows only an infield hit, finishes with 19 pitches, 14 strikes. Not a bad start.

In the bottom half, A-Rod flies to the deep rightfield corner. Nice grab by Tabata. Jason Giambi grounds sharply to Josh Phelps. And Jorge Posada flies to left.

THIRD INNING:

Easy 1-2-3 inning for Steven Jackson, one of the pitchers the Yankees took from Arizona for grumpy Randy Johnson. Andy Cannizaro and Wil NIeves grounded to short and Ramiro Pena grounded to second. I guess pitchers really are ahead of hitters.

With Chase Wright pitching, Robinson Cano flies to center. Melky Cabrera reaches on a dribbler in front of the mound. Wright, who I just learned is a lefthander, made a low throw to first that Phelps couldn't dig out of the dirt. (Bet on Andy Phillips in that race.) But Mientkiewicz strikes out looking and Damon grounds to Phelps.

FOURTH INNING:

Ben Davis just replaced Posada as catcher. Jackson struck out Gardner looking and gets Sardinha to ground to Mientkiewicz for two quick outs. But then trouble ensues. Tabata walks and Juan Miranda, the Cuban defector the Yankees gave $2 million last winter, drives him in with a shot to left-center. Talk about an immediate return on their investment. The inning ends when Phelps grounds to A-Rod. Reggies 1, Yogis 0.

Jeter leads off the bottom half of the inning with a single up the middle and receives a nice applause from a crowd that also includes my parents. After Matsui fouls out to second, A-Rod singles to left-centerfield and hustles to second on an error by Gardner. With men on second and third and one out, Giambi is up. Giambi, in mid-season form, leans into a 2-and-0 pitch to load the bases for Ben Davis. And get this -- Davis came about two or three feet from a grand slam, hitting a shot to the 408-mark in centerfield that goes down as a sacrifice fly. All the runners move up for Cano, but the man now wearing 24 grounds to Phelps to end the rally. Reggies 1, Yogis 1.

FIFTH INNING:

All of the big stars for the Yogis have just left the game, meaning the clubhouse is about to open. Thus, I must stop the game log here. Hope you enjoyed it.

Cool! Sign him to a long term extension!

ahhh, life is getting better. Yankee updates.

Wow i just found this blog last night, perfect timing, thank you so much for keeping us updated!

3/2/07 Yankees/Devil Rays 1:05 pm ET XM radio 178

Chase Wright -24 yr old lefty posted great numbers at Tampa (A) 12-3 1.88 ERA 120 innings 43 walks 100 strikeouts...he could make the jump to Scranton this yr .He can start and relieve.

Giambi, in mid-season form, leans into a 2-and-0

I can't stop laughing. Great line.

Reggie's Lineup defeating the Yankees with young minor leaguers in their lineup. Are you kidding me? They can't score against great Kartens?

Giambi ahead in the count 2-0, with runners at 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, should be looking to "mash" the ball, not merely get on base with a HBP.
It's nice that your folks are there to enjoy the game.

ruse, CA. I have watched A ball in Sarasota with the Cinn. club. Those are great numbers with Wright. Hopefully, he'll keep up the progress. Always like lefties in the starting rotation.

i like how ll the reporters ditched the game...so what was the final

We'll see how long this love affair the Yanks have with Doug M. lasts when he bats .200 for the first two months of the season.

Yogis after five innings

I’m going to have to boogie on down to the clubhouse soon but there has been some action for the Yogis against RHP Jeff Kennard:

Melky: Double
Minky: Walk
Reese: RBI single
Gonzalez: RBI single, second on the throw
Cairo: RBI single
Basak: RBI single

The inning was then declared over; 5-1 Yogis through five.[/QUOTE]

Yogi's team won the ballgame and came back against Jeff Kennard.

Larry : I believe Chase Wright was the only player from A Ball to be placed on the 40 man roster,so they must think something of him...

Roy- Remember, Giambi is supposed to be taking it easy on his wrist through the early stages of ST. He said in an earlier interview that he is working more on "getting his eyes sharp" than his stroke until the doc clears him to swing away.

Eric- We know, we know, Andy Phillips is the god of all baseball and Doug M. should be cleaning his toenails for him.

we're talking about an intra squad game here...this ain't the playoffs !

Let's not get too excited about the batting order, what the pitchers did, how the 1b's played etc. yet, as Ruse said, it's an intra squad game, the first one in fact. I think I'll quote a famous scholar:
"Practice, we talkin' bout Practice, I can (you know) see if we (you know) talkin' bout a game (you know) but we talkin' bout Practice...I mean (you know) I mean (you know) it's Practice! Not a game, not a game, not a game, but PRACTICE"

Jim B did your parents pay for their seats or did you bum them? No offense.I heard reporters are notorious freeloaders.

Well, anonymous, there was no fee for entry to Legends Field today.

No offense, but people who don't sign there names to their posts are cowards. No offense though.

Jim B were you the reporter who tossed the ball at A-Rod to sign at the book store. I heard that caused the problem and turned the event into a circus.

Come see the real deal Baseball blog every American is talking about

www.yourouttahere.blogspot.com

Now, Jim A., does that really make any sense? Are you actually any less anonymous than if you called yourself 'anonymous'? Are you the only 'Jim A.' in the world? And what would someone be hiding from on here? Is somebody going to get their butt cyber-kicked or something?

Nice game recap.

ruse, Tabata is another A ball player who's on the 40 man. And i believe Miranda is also set to start in Tampa.

ruse, Ca: it considerd high A ball. The talent of the players are obvious but its raw.

Yes, 40 man roster does mean something. Your nickname should be Mr. Stats.

Gary Matthews Jr. used Perfomance Enhancing Drugs

If it turns out that Gary Matthews Jr. really was doing 'roids -- and it wasn't his hitting coach who helped him break out of his career-long mediocrity...

Thanks for the update Jim B.

Has anyone heard anything new on the MLB Extra Innings/Direct TV deal? I found some articles on the net, but I haven't seen anything new on it. Is it a done deal?

Thanks guys.

Damn, the Yankees have a weak team! Igawa is an awful pitcher and Matsuaka is the real deal. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Miranda is on the 40 man roster and will probably start the yr at Double A...Tabata is a Non Roster invitee....Larry ,to some degree stats can tell a story ,and is a big part of the history of the game...I haven't been this excited about the minor league talent the Yanks have in a long while...so I've spent some time trying to find out as much as possible, often stats are the only "History" available....

i dont hate the game just redsux fans!!!!

Anthony- When you assign yourself a name on this blog you provide a valid email address along with it. Anonymous people do not so they can't be held accountable for anything they've said, especially when it's a personal attack on someone, either another blogger or in this case, the host of this blog, Jim B. So to answer your question, yes it does make a difference.

John G: I heard yesterday that the Government was looking into the deal between DirecTV and MLB so the deal has not been finalized. From all I've read, it appears as if this deal will happen.

Ruse, CA: As you know. I don't have an affinity for stats as you do but I have learned to step back and gather some stats to make a point. My problem with stats in the history of the game is the equation of yesterday and today. Voting for Hall of Famers seems to a numbers thing first than the hurdle is longterm impact on the game. The numbers today appear to be on an uneven surface with Balco and the number of teams with suspect pitching.

Unfortunately, with open forums, you have to deal idiots/cowards who ruin a good thing. No offense to those hiding behind a keyboard.

The best news you can take from an intra squad game(or any preseason game) is news on health. So far, not too bad with injuries.

Thanks Jim A. I have the same feeling as you do from what I've read on this.

It's kinda sad that MLB is doing this and shutting people out from this package, all because cable systems won't carry the Baseball Channel on their basic tier.

Oh well...

Jim A- I just figured anonymous people were too lazy to put up their names, I guess you have a point about the email addresses, though I'm still not entirely clear what would happen if someone is 'held accountable' for something they say.
