We just got word that the MRI and x-rays on Carl Pavano's left foot showed a bone bruise. No word just yet on how long he will be out, but at the very least you've got to assume he will not pitch in tomorrow's intersquad. Beyond that, of course, is anyone's guess with this guy. Fifth starter anyone?
Also, Johnny Damon returned to the team today. He wouldn't specify what he was dealing with, but he insisted the personal issue is in the past and won't crop up again. He said it was weighing on his mind since the start of camp.

First heavy legs, now a bruise. See you in June, Carl Ripken.
Can anyone say Phil Hughes/Humberto Sanchez/Jeff Karstens/Darrel Rasner??????? LOL!!! Everytime I hear something with Carla, I swear, I just break out laughing! It's not even serious anymore, I just laugh...
this has to be a joke right. The guy keeps getting hurt. Tough it out carl show some manliness
Bruised Buttocks kept this guy out for 14 months, my gosh what will a bruised foot do? Can he get Tommy John surgery on his foot?
Just as I predicted! Should have been given away for nothing months ago. At least we would be rid of this albatross and moving forward.
Does anybody have ANY information about how the Yankees are playing on the field during this spring training????? Who's pitching well????? Who's getting hits????? Who looks real sharp??? How does our team, as a whole, look on the field?????? I do remember one fan posting a bit of information on that one day last week. I'd like to know where he gets that great information from.
Did you Know Carl pavano was Former Redsox? He’s stealing money from yankees. Trade this Bum already. I can’t take anymore
Rick: Do you get the fact that other teams would not have been interested in Pavano "months ago" because he was coming off an injury ? What team would have wanted "damaged goods"?...I blame the Yankee front office for signing him to begin with...Pavano prior to signing w/NY had spent significant time on the DL in 99,00,01, had shown a propensity for injury ,he like Jaret Wright another injury riddled waste had their best yrs in 04 , neither had really ever pitched w/ any consistency, in their careers they have spent 15 separate times on the DL ,5 of those belonging to Pavano...I think we were all misled into believing Pavano was going to be a major contributor to a depleted pitching staff in 05 ...he has resorted back to a career pattern of injury and unfulfilled promise...if they can package him in a deal it would open the door for the 4 or 5 pitchers who deserve a shot....yes Pavano was a much heralded prospect for the BoTox in the mid-90's ,he was the key player they traded for Pedro who was w/Montreal at the time
Lucy : I do know XM radio will broadcast ST games when they begin in about a week...
ruse
In fact, teams were interested in him months ago. Granted, they wanted to steal him for nothing and have the Yanks pay part of his salary. My point is that we should have taken the best deal we could get and move on from this soap opera.
I understand the logic of show casing him in ST to raise his value. My point is that what is happening is what would happen. Ya can't raise his value if he never takes the mound in a real game, which doesn't appear will happen, just like I predicted.
That's the flaw in the plan of show casing him. There won't be anything to show case! I get the strategy, I just don't think it will ever work.
Randy Johnson had back surgery, did not pitch, and was traded. Obviously, you can trade an injured player, before he shows he is healthy. Pavano should be traded as soon as he has 1 injury free outing. You "posters" that feel he still can be a contributor to the Yankee "07" season, are not taking into consideration how this "dead beat" damages the team moral. Why should anybody play "hurt", if the Yanks will tolerate a "malingerer" at $10 million a year? We need to rid ourselves of this guy, and trade him to an NL team.
This guy has the worst luck ever. I don't want him on this team anymore. He probably cost the Yanks a cool million in x-rays alone. Give him away please Cashman. Give him away for new on field spring training police since there should be a spot open from last weeks incident.
I broke my ulna and still went to work (I was a mason) at his age. That was far more taxing than playing baseball with a bruise...lol! Give me a break!
Before we pass too much judgement we have not really heard Carla say she doesn't want to play, she was sent for X-Rays and an MRI and I'm sure that was the team's wish. I think we should hear what the lady has to say before we crack wise.
Rick,
do you also understand the fact that the team cannot justify picking up all his contract, trading him for a C level prospect and essentially paying for another team to have him. I can see the posts now, Yanks trade him to the Rockies for a bag of baseballs and eat the contract, sometime in June the team hits a low point while Pavano is pitching well in Colorado and the posts are flying, "I can't believe the Yankees are paying 20 mil for Pavano to pitch for someone else."
Roy, he's not doing anything to team moral. He sat out all of last year with a bruised butt, that didn't stop Damon, Jeter, Cano, Proctor, Rivera, Johnson, Sheffield from playing hurt.
Yankee fans, I do not believe he's going anywhere until he throws some innings. This will give BC a base line for selling or keeping. Pitchers go down at the drop of a hat. Even Pavano can't stay out for too long with this bruise.
Jim A.
I agree.
Though once again Torre is showing that he's only a player's manager depending on who the player is. He already went out to the media and hung Carl out, saying, "Well you never know with him, but I hope it doesn't set him back from the other guys too much."
A manager who is looking out for his players would say, "It was just precautionary, he doesn't think there's anything wrong and we'll get him back on the mound as soon as the swelling goes down."
I hear Abreu is seriously injured, too. That's a shame.
Manny back in Sox camp, baby!!!
Manny on the DL with severe retardation
JD Drew changing his first name to DL
Curt Schilling showed up at camp so fat it appeared as if he ate three of the Sox closer candidates
And no one has yet to explain to me how throwing 7 innings every 5 days is better for Papelbon's shoulder than throwing 1 inning 4 or 5 times a week
Rick : It was rumored other teams were interested ,and like Chip said the Yanks were not going to eat contract...to me the best scenario is for him to pitch well in ST and trade him,if on the other hand if he doesn't pitch well or is still afflicted w/ the injury bug then they will be forced to trade him for C- prospect....but for anyone who thinks this guy is "Lightning in a Bottle" you're sadly mistaken,a 31 yr old injury-prone below .500 pitcher is usually just that.
CHIP-
Are you saying the Yanks should keep this guy? In the BBB LEAGUE, will you draft Pavano? Placed in the role of GM/Owner, I don't think you'll touch him. Let me know.
Roy-
That's not a logical comparison.
The Yankees are on the hook to this guy for $40 million. That kind of money (even for the Yankees) is going to make the team think very long and hard before just giving him away.
You're asking businessmen to say, "Well this isn't working out, you take him, and while you're at it here's $20 million for your trouble."
If you bought an apartment, and then decided you didn't like it, but couldn't get an offer for it that you wanted, would you pay for someone else to live in it?
Ruse
As usual, you and I are seeing eye to eye on this. In a league where Gil Meche is getting 11 mil per year, if Pavano can show something...ANYTHING...someone will take him and be happy paying him a "mere" $20 mil over the next two seasons.
My guess, Colorado.
CHIP-
What round are you taking Pavano? As for the apartment, it's location, location, location. You do your "homework", and buy in a low vacancy area, where property values have a history of consistent appreciation. With a "history" such as this, you will not be placed in a position of not being able to sell or rent. Pavano has a "history" of injuries, and DL time. Better to cut our loses now, unload Pavano, and get a better "property". Again, what round are you drafting Pavano?
ROY-
I'm taking him with my first overall pick.
You do realize right, that there is a difference between fantasy baseball and real baseball? In fantasy baseball you can add and remove players at will, in real baseball there are contracts to be honored and the like.
It's very easy to say, "just cut him, eat the contract," but it isn't your $40 million.
If no team is willing to take his salary and/or give the Yankees something useful in return then what is the point in trading him?
If they are going to pay him, why not keep him? Even if he's hurt, so what? Paying him NOT to pitch for you is still better than paying for him TO pitch for someone else. It isn't hurting anyone other than Pavano's reputation so what's the difference?
CHIP-
I'd rather pay $20 million for Pavano to pitch for someone else, than $40 million to "not" pitch for me. The Yanks will end up paying roughly half of Pavano's contract. Ruse mentioned the Rocks, and this is also the kind of deal the Braves have made previously. I just think the Yanks should cut their loss as quickly as possible. There is an NL market for this pitcher, at roughly $6 million a year. Once he throws injury free in a SP game, we need to act fast. I don't think you'll have any trouble getting Pavano with your 1st round pick.
Roy,
I'm not arguing against trading him, I'm arguing against trading him for nothing just to get him off the team.
Hell, I would propose trading him to the Braves for Tim Hudson and a prospect. The Braves owe Hudson 13 mil a year for the next 3 so taking Pavano at 10 mil per for 2 saves them nearly 20 mil. The Yankees get a healthy pitcher who may just need a change of location and a prospect.
If Pavano shows anything in ST his stock will rise considerably. We Yankee fans can piss and moan about guys like Pavano while other teams ,especially in the NL would project him as a #3 starter, teams are always clamouring over pitching going into the season, wouldn't that be the most advantageous time to trade him ?
I certainly wouldn't complain if they trade Pavano to Atlanta for Hudson a real "Bulldog" if there ever was...
I'd take Hudson, but we have to act quickly before Pavano is "on the shelf" again. We gotta "cut our losses", and move this guy for whatever we can get, as quickly as possible.
Roy,
What's the rush? Again, if the worst case scenario is that the Yankees have to pay Pavano $20 mil to sit on the DL that isn't a huge deal. Sure it's not great for the team's PR, and fans will get on them as you are doing, but the reality of the situation is that by him not pitching, or for the team giving him away and eating his salary, the Yankees aren't getting any return on their investment.
The Braves will want to unload Hudson's contract a month from now just as much as they do now.
And even more, Pavano will have a greater trade value next year when he enters the last year of his deal. Then he becomes a cost assured 1 year pitcher for some team that needs a 3rd or 4th starter but can't afford what's out there.
The Yankees are apparently not trading Pavano at this point, so maybe as fans we should give him the benefit of the doubt by fully supporting him and hoping for the best. Possibly his string of bad luck is giving him incentive to give more than we thought him capable of. Maybe he'll surprise us by staying healthy and pitching a fantastic season.
Lucy: Unfortunately Pavano has only remained healthy 3 out of his 9 yrs in the bigs, and he's had only 1 above average season ,so to hang our hopes on Pavano doing well might be expecting to much from him...I hope he does have a fantastic season but w/ 62-64 lifetime record what do we base that on ?
CHIP-
I'd say 90% of us want to trade Pavano, the question is when? Your patient, and want to "sell" at a later date, when Pavano "may" be worth more. Me, I want to unload this guy now, before he "supposedly" gets injured again, and drives his already minimal value down. 1 injury free Spring Training start, and I would immediately start fielding offers. I think if you were paying Pavano that $10 million a year, you might not be so patient.
Roy -
And I think if YOU were paying Pavano $10 mil a year you would be more inclined to be patient and see what you can get for him.
Remember, to this point the only offers that were made came from the Cards and Rockies. Both offered low rate prospects and ONLY if the Yankees agreed to pay off the lion's share of his contract.
True, Pavano's health has been subpar most of his career, but there is one year that I remember very well: 2003 when Pavano helped the Marlins win the World Series by beating the Yankees. I think that's the only reason the Yankees wanted him so badly to begin with. If Pavano helps us win just one World Series while he's on board, maybe we can then say he was worth the aggravation. These may be high hopes, but I still think there's some potential that Pavano could do us some good.
Last week A-Rod,now you arm chair GM'S are fixated on dumping Pavano. It's a non-issue,given the dearth of good pitching available,if Pavano has a good ST he's not going anywhere. And lets not kid ourselves. If the prospects were ready we wouldn't of signed Pettitte nor would we be chasing after the Rocket.
Lucy :Your point is well taken...we'll certainly know in a quick month what the cards hold for Pavanos future in Pinstripes..
Mr Putzooey : and you're not prognosticating ? Is it a known fact the Yanks will pursue Clemens or what the kids will show in ST or early in the yr ?Karstens/Rasner/Sanchez/Hughes will be every bit as good as the numbers Pavano could put up...the Yankee starting staff with or without Pavano stacks up well against all comers...people think Pavano is the second coming ,well he's not boys and girls...if he remains w/ the Yanks I doubt he is much better than Wright was last yr..
Mr. PUTZ-
If Pavano has even "half" a good spring, he is gone.
Pavano...
Let's start with facts.
From Cot's Baseball Contracts the remainder of the contract is the following:
07:$10M, 08:$11M, 09:$13M club option
($1.95M buyout)
no-trade clause
Pavano may void option by reaching appearance levels (200 IP in 2008 or 400 IP 2007-08), but no buyout is paid
So anyone picking him up is on the hook for $22.95 million. If the option is exercised, then $34 million.
While he is injured he has NO TRADE VALUE. None. Zero. Nada. Zip.
If Brian Cashman would have received a half-way decent offer Carl Pavano would be elsewhere now.
However an offer to play elsewhere while the Yankees play the salary is absurd. Would you do that?
So the Yankees will try to get him healthy and maybe salvage some pitching out of him. If he is halfway decent he will have some value in today's pitching market.
Calling for him to be traded while wrapped in bandages is unreasonable.
Ruse your one big contradiction. Put your stat book down and read my blog. Then look at what you posted. You and the other nitwit Roy Storing should learn the game before you trot out that passive-aggressive garbage.
Putz: What's your point!I forgot you don't have one!
Ruse-If any one took the time to scrutinize your blogges they would find your more BS than substance. The Putzoo man made a valid point and because you don't agree you proceed to dodge the issue while making a fool out of yourself. Much the same when you took issue with the Carlos Zambrano blog. Remember, your retort then "whatever".Your retort now is "what's your point". The point is that you are a full blown blowhard.
Andy :The truth is any ignorant a**hole knows that Zambrano is to valuable to the Cubs that they would let him walk when the Cub front office just spent over 300 million trying to improve the club ,do you think they're going to let their best pitcher walk away?...Just because you see him pitching for the Yanks ? I'm just stating the obvious !!! Andy what are you about 10 yrs old ? What great insight have you brought to this blog ? That I'm a blowhard? Wow ! That's profound ! ...Pavano is not as great a pitcher as some of you seem to think ,you're hanging hopes on a 62-64 lifetime pitcher who has had 1 good yr in his nine yr career, and has spent much of 5 seasons on the DL ,the Yanks have way to many decent young starters to waste on a 31 yr old underachiever...If you've read these blogs the general consensus is most of us would like to see Pavano traded ...have a nice day !
