Igawa good, working on changeup

Kei Igawa continues to improve from one outing to the next. He pitched five innings today, allowing one earned run on three hits, two walks and a wild pitch. He struck out four. Igawa threw 87 pitches and 49 strikes.
Both he and Jorge Posada, who was behind the plate, emphasized that the one area Igawa is not yet comfortable is with his changeup. Although that is considered his second-best pitch, he is still working on the feel this spring.
Igawa said through an interpreter: "If I don't throw a good changeup, then my other pitches are not going to be as effective."
Posada said he called the changeup a lot more often than he normally would to help Igawa get extra work on it.

Sounds like a good start for a fourth or fifth starter, and given his pitch count, had it been the regular season he probably could have gone another inning or two...which already makes it a better outing than anything the Yankees got last year out of that spot in the rotation.

Where's that Bozo "Casual Observer"? That guy was a loser and his red sox suck!

sounds like a great reliver with those K's

Igawa looked good today and the Yankees won.

D-Sake looked phenomenal today, and the Red Sox lost.

This boils down to one thing: There are no guarantees in baseball.

Lucy : and Igawa was disappointed with his changeup !

I think Igawa is going to surprise us. I'm glad we picked up the lower key Japanese pitcher. While D-Sake is better and has had better success, he's too much of a distraction. Boston, Japan, and their media worship this guy like he's a god. After he pitched, he ran around the outfield for a very long time and the camera focused more on him running than the Boston pitchers at the plate.

The attention this guy is getting is way beyond normal and desirable for a TEAM. As a result of their holy worship of him, I think we're going to see a name change. The Red Sox are now going to be called the D-SOXI MATSU-SOXA.

I found these comments interesting:

The Sox also have a LHP by the name of Hideki Okajima who is slated to be middle relief/set-up for their pen. He has complained about "getting the feel for his change-up" too. The concern is that if he is struggling with the change up in the warm weather of Florida...it could be even worse in the cold of April up north.

I wonder if there are any significant differances between the baseballs used in Japanese baseball and the MLB?

This comment didn't register, so here's a reprint:

I didn't quite type that the right way. The Red Sox are now going to be called the D-soxi MATSU-soxa. There's a difference.
