Don't expect Roger Clemens to rush to the Yankees' rescue.
Clemens said earlier this month he won't decide whether or not to pitch this year until May. In an email this evening, Clemens's agent, Randy Hendricks reiterated that: "Our time frame will not change. It is the entire point of shortening the season."

Thank you to all the BBB league members who executed a great draft this morning. I hope everyone noticed that none of the rules changed while we were doing the draft! This is my first attempt at this type of league so I hope you all bear with me.
I know many of you like the AL/NL roster drafts, but I think once you give this AL only a chance, you will see that it is more challenging and therefore more rewarding. It is much more like trying to manage a REAL team since everyone on every team is not an Allstar and when you need replacements, you will have to plug in a journeyman, much like real teams have to do.
Anyhow, I thank you all again for a great job and I will do my best to be a fair and honest commish. Good luck to all.
I'm not going to comment on Clemens "rushing to the rescue" ,if you'd kept abreast of this blog over the winter you'd know that that discussion has been beaten to death...Yankees don't need any rescuing and I don't hear any bugle calls in the distance.
Who cares if RC decides to pitch. There is enough Yankee talent to win it all. The talent is not hidden but on the main roster and in AA & AAA.
"Casual observer" Sucks !
Uh...wrong column Beef, but I wanted you to know I saw your post.
Clearly you put alot of thought into your post....you should be recognized for it.
Ruse, you speak my mind regarding the RC non-issue.
Up till now I had been mentally congratulating the 4 local sprts pages that only one over-the-hill hysteric had sounded that call -- and he was met with resounding silence. Which thankfully seems to be echoed on this blog.
Baseball is a tough sport, played by real men. Injuries are inherent, even expected, as a natural part of the game. You deal with them by compensating as the season progresses (as is done every year on practically every team.) To become alarmed now is completely absurd.
It's pathetically amusing to see that, because Karstens has a stiff elbow, we have some people playing mommy. Then you have those who feel the season is lost because a couple of pitchers are rested during Spring Training and one will miss a few starts. The attitude of "we need to rescue" our team under these circumstances sounds extremely wimpy to me. Anyone who feels our team needs rescuing at this point should be watching tee-ball, not baseball.
"Casual Observer" is a big Moron and Lucy rules !
Hi boys! Isn't Pavano cute?
No reason for anyone to get alarmed yet over the injuries hitting the Yankee rotation, better to have them now than down the stretch. But it is amusing (not in a haha way) that the healthiest starter this spring is Carl Pavano.
Whom I by the way did not draft in our fantasy league.
Anti-Yankee fans Blow Tito. The "B" on your hat stands for "Blow"

It looks like we've been infiltrated by 8 year olds this morning. As a true Yankee fan, I'd like to let Casual Observer know that these kids are definitely the minority. True fans like Lucy, Chip, Rick, Larry, Ruse and me just love the game of baseball and our Yankees just as you love your team.
Observer: What is the feeling of Red Sox fans about Clemens potential return? As you can see by most of the opinions on this blog, we Yankee fans could care less what Clemens does to satisfy his ego. It is my opinion that he will simply look at the standings in May and make his decision based on who he thinks will have the best shot to get him another ring.
Disturbing that anonymous would know that.
Screw that steroid-taking fraud. I'm tired of this stupid game. Pick a team, pitch and shut the F up.
I share your frustration, Deezer. Clemens is playing a game within a game. If he's too fragile to play the entire season, then he's a big risk. If he doesn't have an allegiance to a particular team and needs to make his decision based on May standings, he's not playing with his heart and therefore not worthy of being called a Yankee.
It is way way way too early to be discussing Clemens. He has said he's not going to make a decision about whether or not he wants to pitch until mid May anyway, so what's the point.
Given the new Yankee mindset towards free agents, it is not likely that Cashman is going to turn around and say, "Roger we need you, name your price but we need you and now." If he were going to make a desperation move, it would likely be to promote either Hughes or Olendorf to the majors. Instead he is taking a calm approach. Darrell Rasner will likely open the season with the team and if they need another starter they will tap Matt DeSalvo, not one of their top guys, to fill that role.
Boston fans suck and so does their team ! 1 title in 86 yrs clearly sucks.
Jim A,
You know it is really split. Alot of Sox fans are absolutely infatuated with the idea of Roger coming back to Boston....and you would have to admit it would be storybook. Of course there are those who think because he was such a big part of the Yankess success that he is forever "tarnished" in terms of ever being a "true" Red Sox again. There is little question of the magnitude of drama he would provide.
Personally I would love to see him in a Sox uni again, not only because I think he can still pitch, and that he would be a huge help in terms of mentoring the Sox young arms...ie Papelbon, Beckett, Lester, Bard...etc., but because I am a bit of a romantic...and what a way to end such an illustrious career.
On the other hand...I would guess that the Yanks may have an edge in terms of signing Roger...and he would certainly do nothing but add to the rivalry (again) and he would be a fantastic addition to your staff.
Thanks for the warm welcome Jim A....nice to have a conversation with someone who isnt either a blindly loyal Sox fan, or a bitter and disgruntled Sox fan...who can offer a differant perspective than "Yankees suck", or the ever popular "Red Sox suck".
Cheers...
Chip, don't you agree though that Clemens does represent a fit from the Yankee perspective because he will only cost money and only for one season (actually half)?
People get the impression that because the Yanks aren't spending money that they don't have money, which is certainly not the case. They are just trying to spend it better (scouting, international FA's etc.).
With a week till Opening Day, I'm not gonna get an ulcer over the Yankee starting rotation. All kinds of things both good and bad can still happen before then. What does "burn" me is that Karstens admitts to having trouble "getting loose" in the "pen" before his start, and then gets "pounded" for 2 innings before that "genius" Pratt has the "inkling" that something might be physically wrong with his pitcher. When a pitcher "warms up", the bullpen coach is supposed to be there watching this. If a pitcher is having trouble "getting loose", hopefully the coach will spot this, should the pitcher fail to mention it, especially a young pitcher trying to break into the "Bigs". Then Karstens gets "hammered" for 2 whole innings without anyone raising concern in the entire dugout. Is the entire coaching staff "asleep at the wheel" or just "asleep"? Karstens has pitched several times in front of the "staff", they should be familiar with him, his mechanics, and the results he has been achieving thus far. To not notice anything, and let this young pitcher possibly due some serious damage to himself and the team as a whole, is inexcusable. Karstens must take part of the blame, but he does want to go North, and all players in general know they are expected to "suck it up" and play. Well... other than Pavano.
Jim A.
I'm split on it myself.
On the one hand, yes, all Clemens costs is money and so the team can save its prospects.
On the other hand, there are some questions that need to be addressed. Not the least of which is how much does he have in the tank. There is a stark contrast between the AL and NL and especially the AL East vs. the NL Central (generally a weak division) So how effective is he going to be against the deep lineups (specifically Boston).
I think the five the Yankees have now, if healthy, are enough to get the team into the playoffs and that Hughes or Olendorf or Sanchez will be playing a role with this team down the stretch, so the question is whether the money and any capitulations the team will have to make to him (his own schedule etc) is worth it for a fourth starter.
Roy,
In fairness Pratt has very little time with Karstens and so he might not have noticed something was off from normal as quickly as a catcher who had worked extensively with Karstens might have. It would be akin to eating something for the first time, you don't know how it should taste so how can you know if it was prepared well or not?
If anyone is interestd you might want to read Tom Verducci's piece in Sports Illustrated on Matsuzaka.
No...not because he is a Red Sox pitcher...but because of the way that Japanese baseball views pitching, and the preparations their pitchers practice. Very differant than American baseball...almost like it was before all this so called technology.
A very interesting read...and food for thought.
AL only is hard enough but 12 teams???
Seriously I don't even know what to trade for I'm short in every catergory and so is everybody else.
Thank god I got Carl Pavano or I'd actually be concerned
Casual Observer,
I read it. It's a nice article but that said, I'm not sure the hype surrounding Matsuzaka is right. Part of me hopes it is, I think if he's as good as advertised then he'll be fun to watch for the next few years, much like Pedro was when he was with Boston. But the track record is undeniable. Japanese pitchers who come to America have a very short shelf life in terms of their effectiveness. The best so far was Hideo Nomo but even his effectiveness fell off the map about two years after he arrived...as did Irabu, Sasaki, Ishii. Mind you, that doesn't bode well for the Yankees' Igawa, but he's not being looked at as a stud ace, he's a back of the rotation starter so the expectations on him are a bit lower.
Lets hope Dice-K is Dice-Y
Phucker, I feel your pain. When I saw all the closers jumping off the board I took on a different strategy with my relievers, I picked up relief pitchers who might actually be starters. They'll still have relief pitcher eligibility, and I won't get any saves, but I should up my chances for wins and K's each week.
Puns Suck ! But not as much as Red Sux fans.
Not sure how Clemens could even be interested in going back to Boston. Does he forget when he was on the Yanks in the playoffs and they were chanting "Roger" and being nasty with his family. There was even an old banner of Roger hanging outside the stadium that was torn down and lit on fire. Clemens is no dummy-However his comments about being able to visit the Kennedy's if he went back to Boston was the silliest thing i have ever heard. Aren't most of them deceased? He will use the Yanks and RedSox to drive up the price-both have rotation openings and the season hasn't started yet. My bet is he is going back to Houston. He's not gonna mess this up for his kid down there.
Phil Hughes is on "Cold Pizza" if anyone is interested
Observer,
The only reason I would give the Yanks an edge is because they may actually need him. I don't really think Boston will. They have a pretty good rotation, especially if Lester gets healthy. I think Boston actually has an edge because of the nostalgia factor. With the Yanks, it's kind of been there, done that only 3 years ago so it's not a big deal.
Who knows, he could decide to just stay in Houston because, as Chip points out, it's probably an easier job and he will look good for sticking with his hometown team.
wow that was even more worthless than i thought it was gonna be.
that show blows, but I wish Phil well and hurry up !
Mike,
Maybe Teddy Kennedy can give Roger a ride to Fenway? (better pack a snorkel Rog!).
Yes Chip,
You are precisely correct. In fact it is that article by Verducci that lends itself to the whole Japanese pitchers short shelf life concept. It will be interesting to see how Matsuzaka does over the next 6 years of his contract.
I might add to compare him to past Japanese pitchers who have plied their trade in MLB is not really a fair comparison. By all accounts, Matsuzaka has a larger and more durable body than most prior Japanese pitchers. (other than Irabu), he has a far bigger arsenal of pitches that he has impecable command of....and he has the ability to bring it in the upper 90's when he needs to.
The big issue in my mind will be whether or not he can handle pitching every 5th day in the AL east. No easy task. The fact that he never ices his arm...has 300 pitch bullpen sessions, and seems completely unconcerned with over-use of his arm remains to be seen as well.
Jim A,
You may be right....and I have to echo others in here (and on many Sox forums) that I am a bit tired of the dramatics and game playing by Roger. I guess I cant blame him...who wouldnt do exactly what he is doing given the ability? I also agree that Roger, who can still pitch, will likely struggle a bit more in the AL east...there are many deep lineups...even the doormats, O's/D'Ray's have impressive lineups. You can be assured that IF he decides to come back to the AL east, every time he pitches it will be a media frenzy force feeding us fans with high drama....I suppose that is a good thing no?
Roger's not going back to that lousy new england city with those loser bitter fans and stupid accents.
I'm sorry, but what was the subject of this thread again? Oh, Yankees pitching. How did I lose track of that?
Roger might come back if he needs another jeep, but he'll probably stick with Houston since it's the place he "retired" to several years ago.
Chip
Mussina and Igawa and Rasner are all healthy and Pettite is OK too. I was expecting you to take Pavano 1st round? Also, I see Andy Phillips is still available?
Casual Observer
If you noticed, I tried to give you a compliment and welcome on the other thread. Anyway, welcome to our blog. I enjoy getting your civil opinion on Red Sox matters and your opines on our Yanks as well. You are clearly not the atypical Sox fan!
Phucker & Chip
If you notice, everyone has the same situation with their rosters. So, you are not really at a disadvantage. The teams are all like REAL teams. It will make it much more challenging and more real to get through the year. Hope you will give it a fair chance?
Rick,
I'm not complaining. It's not like there is money at stake or anything...this is all for fun and bragging rights.
I think it'll be interesting how everyone's team plays out. Like I said during the draft yesterday, it could be really interesting if a player someone took in the first round is traded to an NL team half way through the season.
So, are we going to post our rosters and wait to see opinions on who has the better team? It would be intresting so see everybody's reaction.
Well, here's my starting lineup:

Thanks Rick,
I have to say however...this Yanks/Sox hatred has taken on a life of it's own. I've been a Sox fan since birth (1956) and have watched the Sox/Yanks rivalry grow into this monster. I believe it really started (at least in our era) in the early 70's when the two teams...their players, truly hated each other. Today it has become far more the fans rather than the players. I'll admit to lowering myself in the past to that ridiculous behavior, but I have recognized it for what it is....truly idiotic. Dont get me wrong...I love it when the Sox win and the Yanks lose....as I'm sure you do when it is the other way around. Nowadays, as far as I'm concerned a little good natured ribbing between the rival fans and then it ends...we continue to be adults and appreciate the game. Seems to me we would all be much better off being baseball fans first, friends because of our love of the game second, and then rivals because of our love for our team of choice.
Many of us really have no choice in our "fandom"..we are born in to it...it is part of our culture..the very fabric of our lives. To those who say..."just pick another team to root for" ,I say you dont have the passion it takes to be a obsessed fan like me and many others. In spite of that passion, I would like to think that when I visit Yankee Stadium, I can enjoy the experience, and the people who sit around me.(this in fact has been the case....I have had great experiences my 3 visits to Yankee Stadium), and I would hope that Yankee fans can enjoy their experience at Fenway. After-all...it is the same game we played as little leaguers, and the same game we watch our children and grandchildren play. Perhaps we all need to consider that...and the example we set for them.
Just my two cents worth.
Alvaro
If you go to the league site, you can click on the teams names and see their rosters. It is intersting to see how each shapes up. Until I get a feel for how the points tally, I won't know who to rate where? My first impression is that Jim A and Jim B have well rounded teams.

Very well put! I was born in 1952. I'd like to think that any person could visit a ballpark and root for their team without getting beer poured on them or worse. I am a season ticket holder for the Indians even though I am a Yankee fan. I love and enjoy the rivalry especially the days of Fisk/Munson, but would never assault a Sox fan other than arguing points with them.
I've sat with redsox fans and had a great time at the stadium however I heard this is not the case on the reverse. I've heard that Fenway is very hostile to our kind.

Fenway is very hostile. As a matter a fact, the whole rotten city is. I was at a Bruins game once and they chanted Yankees Suck ! They are bitter, red faced drunk snobby irish new englanders who mostly make up the puny 36,000 fans they get at that toilet bowl they call fenway.
Well Rick,
I look forward to the up-coming season, and I hope I can stop by this blog from time to time and chat for a bit. I love the rivalry too, love a little good natured give and take, and consider myself fortunate to be part of the most incredible rivalry in sports watching the most beautiful game ever known.

Same to you! Stop by anytime, Jim A and I will carry on with you for sure.
Friends and fellow bloggers: Please don't use this blog to discuss your fantasy baseball stuff .OK?
Quick tidbit for those who may be interested....ESPN is televising the Sox/Reds game today at 1 pm.
Matsuzaka is pitching. If you can and would like to, watch this kid pitch...he really is something to see.
Fortunately for me, I work from my home office and have a 36" TV parked about 4 feet in front of my desk.
Nick Punto at Util! Your team sucks.
The other 2 look pretty good.
Casual
I can't watch, but I have him on my fantasy team in a league with a bunch of the guys on here. Maybe next year you could join our league?
Deezer
The question is how does YOUR team look???
Thanks for the offer Rick...I will keep it in mind. I'm sure we will get to know each other more throughout the season.
Hello everyone. There is no need for us to panic or the need to entertain this fat jock's wishes of being a diva. Look what kinda of example Clemens would set for the Cano's,Hughes etc. He does not want to travel with the team,he only wants to pitch on certain days. So if that is the case why doesn't he just make his own team where he plays all positions and bats every spot in the order. We don't need the negatives that come with Clemens for a "quick fix".Let him go to the boys up north. I am sure that is good for there clubhouse chem up there.
By the way Rick thanks for putting our league together. It will be alot of fun this season.
Casual,
I thanks I'll definetly be watching. I watched his last outing against Pittsburgh and it scared me. If he's that good my brothers and sisters in this blog have a lot to worry about.
Casual Observer:
I see that you are discussing with some of our veteran fans the Yankee/Red Sox rivalry. I being a yankee fan and born in late '49 just a little humor "late".I have watched over the years this growth of passion which borders on hot blood syndrome in some of our younger fans. Me, I welcome a good Red Sox team every year because theirs nothing like 18 emotional battles between these two clubs. This passion will not relax because of the money being made by the clubs in forstering this competitivness. My wife always fines me talking to strangers with the navy blue hat with big red B on the crown. Alot of good natured kidding but I will say no matter how well the Red Sox's are playing their is a degree of pessimism for the future in their conversation.
I'm not gonna spend my blog time reading thru Fantasy baseball postings.Reading thru some of this drivel is bad enough.
Phuck....LMAO!!...hey..he aint pitched against that Yankee line up yet....I'm not declaring him a HOFer just yet. He is a lot of fun to watch pitch however.
Larry M.
Tip o' the cap to you sir. I couldnt agree more. Not that it makes any differance, but I dont live in Boston...I live in Maine...I do agree with the over-riding pessimism in Boston...and not only about baseball. I cant help that...I love the city anyway...and the Sox are part of my soul.
Casual Observer, although we've had our differences in other threads, I can relate to what you're saying here. I think this rivalry is being taken too far. I don't enjoy the Yankees/Red Sox games because I don't enjoy nastiness and hatred among people. Baseball is supposed to be entertaining.
I first became aware of this rivalry firsthand without being told one existed when I attended a Yankees/Red Sox game at Yankees Stadium. I went with my husband and son, who was around 10 at the time. The Red Sox fans were totally out of control and I was shocked. One sat next to my son and engaged him in conversation about the Red Sox (apparently trying to convert him) almost the entire time. It was very inappropriate. I actually became afraid and vowed never to attend another Red Sox game at Yankees Stadium, even if you were to give me free tickets.
As far as the Red Sox/Reds game today, the Yankees are also playing at 1 o'clock, and the game is being televised on Yes. I also work from home and I'll be watching the Yankees. Thanks for the tip, though.
ruse
Take a chill pill with a brewskie. It's just the first day after our draft and most of us don't get to communicate any other way. I'm sure it will disipate quickly as the week goes on.
Rick : Fair enough !
Sorry Lucy,
Your comments do indeed speak for themselves. I suggest if you dont like "nastiness and hatred among fans" that you dont contribute to it as you did with your caustic comments to me earlier. If all it takes is a good natured jab about Pavano being the opening day pitcher for the Yanks to set you off on that sort of tangent...I doubt we will have many conversations.
I am truly sorry for your family's experience while attending a Sox/Yankees game...I agree, it is more than dispicable to taunt a 10 year old boy who just wants to watch his team play baseball. It seems very little is sacred anymore.
Take a little friendly advise Lucy....dont paint everyone with the same brush. You never know when a person you might like comes along.
If you think about it, this rivalry with Boston that should be helping baseball, and it probably is with TV ratings etc., (although with 18+ games between them per season it is getting to be a bit tired) the way people act at the games people like me with young kids can't take them to a Yanks-Sox game. My kids are too young to hear all the stuff that is said by fans of both teams. Every time I plan a trip to NY w/ my son I have to make sure the Yanks are playing some team nobody cares about so I don't have to explain to him why people are fighting, throwing beer, acting like jackasses etc.
Maybe this is just a phase and things will change, I hope so. The bottom line is the fans of both teams are passionate about their teams but it kills me when you hear someone saying "Yankees suck" or "Red Sox suck" and they can't name a player on either team. It's just nonsense.
Lucy-
I understand where you are coming from. I hold seasons to the Yanks. And every Sox/Yankee game they come down and act like animals. Therefore when they had the "riots" in Boston it wasn't suprising to hear someone died. It is a shame because I do believe there are good hearted real baseball Sox fans our there, but they are given a bad name by these drunk and classless idiots. I don't ever remember us having "riots" when we won our 4 rings. I have been to Fenway for a few Yankee/Sox games and believe it or not there are plenty of Yanks fans there. Some are just afraid to wear there jerseys or hats but I was surprised to see it. Of course Soxs fans had to take it out of line and throw stuff at us. But the funny thing is Sox fans know so much about the Yanks that I believe they are closet Yanks fans. They hate us so much that they learned to love us in a way. But finding a classy Sox fan is few and far between. There aren't many here on the Island because all the Boston hats you see on are Mets fans just pissing us off. I never heard out of a Soxs fans mouth anything good about the Yanks. Even when we won somehow to them we still "sucked". Even though Jeter is one of the best somehow to them he "sucks". Lucy just bring us all on the blog to the next Yanks/Sox game we will protect you.You are one of us now hehe.
Jim A,
I couldnt agree more. I believe it is up to each one of us to stop this ridiculous behavior. Like most everything else, it begins with education at home, and setting the example for not only your children, but for others, and their children too. It is a fine line...I know...we want our children to be competitive, and to have that competitive edge when they hit the real world. we dont want to put them in a bubble, or under an umbrella...at the same time we dont have to accept boorish and dispicable behavior on the part of some as common and unavoidable. My point is, we dont have to become "tree hugging nancy's" (no offense to liberals...just making a point here) where the score doesnt count...the rivalry isnt intense...no, we need to foster this, but with a little integrity and class infused with the passion. We all leave our stamp on our children...we better consider our actions, our words, and our example....because they sure as hell are.
Jim A; Good point .I went to 2 Yankee games last yr at the Stadium while in NY. A Yankee/Red Sox game and a Yankee/Rangers game.Absolutely different fan responses .On a number of occasions during the SOX game, NYs finest had to pull Sox fans out of the stands who were getting pounded on by Yankee fans, while exiting the game I witnessed first hand about 10 thugs taunting a Sox fan ,fortunately a cop intervined .At the Rangers game an entirely different feel ,more civilized ,no fights broke out...I once at a Yankee-Athletics game in Oakland had to tell a fan, an adult male ,to stop using filthy language w/children sitting all around.Things have certainly changed over the yrs.
Casual Observer, whether my comments to you were "caustic" speak for themselves. If you deem my comments to reflect "hatred" and "nastiness," you're the one who needs to do some soul searching. I was trying to be civil to you here, but you're OBVIOUSLY a very defensive person. I'll know better than to direct any comments to you in the future. Have a nice life.
