Matt Stairs RF
Gregg Zaun C

Hideki Matsui LF
Robinson Cano 2B
Doug Mientkiewicz 1B

Talked to Jeff Karstens, who is likely to slide in the rotation with Wang out. He had not yet heard that Wang was headed to the DL. He said as much as he wants to be in the majors, he would rather Wang be healthy.

Kat quotes Karstens: 'as much as he wants to be in the majors, he would rather Wang be healthy.'

A well-brought-up Yankee baby. I confess I love to see them showing off their media-unflappability and sounding like Jeter, while reporters visibly gnash their teeth. Do you suppose he refers to Joe as 'Mr. Torre, and would wait about 8 seasons to graduate to 'Mr. T', if Joe were going to be around that long?

My interview with Joe Torre:

Zander: How is spring training going overall?

JT: Well, there are a lotta guys doing a lotta stuff down here. Hopefully we'll be ready to go on Opening Day, baseball-wise.

Z: How about the bullpen?

JT: Beam, Bean, I get those guys mixed up. I think one of them got cut. Ask Gator. Also, Bruney and Britton, same thing. We have a number of fat pitchers in camp. When I played the game, there were no fat guys. OK, I was fat but I was the only one. Bob Gibson wasn't fat, waistline wise.

Z: Henn or Villone?

JT: I think Henn hasn't allowed too many runs or hits but, you know, Villone is a vet. We know what he can do. His fastball is 81-82 so Gator is working with him. You, on velocity, mechanics, control, command, all that stuff. Villone looked good backing up third base on those double and triples. That's a drill Gator has.

Z: Nieves?
JT: I know he's hitting around .140 but it's only the spring. We all feel he'll hit .170, .180, easy, batting average-wise. He's a high energy guy. Incidentally, who are you?

Z: I'm with Newsday.

JT: Newsweek, I thought that was about politics. What was the question? I love Andy Phillips and his mother is great, too. The other guy's hitting .460 but Andy is a touch better on defense. Except third base, that was a tough day he had there, fielding-wise. Hopefully he'll start hitting. I might try him in LF - that thing with Miggy didn't work out too good.

Z: Joe, last question. How's your relationship with The Boss?

JT: Oh, it's real good. I call him once in awhile. He doesn't understand too much these days. I talk to Steve Swindal a lot - have a few pops late at night. Great guy.

Z: Thanks, Joe

zander - spot on!

brilliantly funny! and yet, sounds way too much like a real interview with torre might sound...
if he takes villone and phillips up north i think he would lose whatever respect he still has, sinceit would become obvious that performance doesn't really count anymore in yankee-land.

by the way, according to torre, neither does winning. quote from earlier this year: "we had a great season last year, i would hate for that to be diminished by 2.5 bad games"... (those games are of course the season ending debacle against detroit).

a manager who doesn't prioritize winning and performance is a manager who's overstretched his career.

What exactly is Karstens supposed to say, "Sure, Wang is the best pitcher on the team, but hell if an injury to him is what it takes for me to make the rotation, I'm all for it. Go me."

It's great that our expectations have been lowered so much that we are impressed by players not being stupid.

Where's Paui-Tm the troll?

He said he wouldn't trade Melky for Mike Gonzalez?

Melky's Cabrera batting Avg. is .200 under this spting training?

It seems that opposing teams figured out Melky's weakness.

Yankees should've traded Melky when they had the chance and his value was up. Gonzalez would've been a terrific addition to the bullpen and a possible successor to Rivera, when he leaves after this season and signs with the Sox.
