When people criticize the way the Yankees team is made up, they often talk about the aging players on the roster. That's something GM Brian Cashman has tried to address over the past year-and-a-half or so, but it obviously is still a work in progress.
Here's a breakdown of the Yankees' current roster:
17 players -- age 30+
8 players -- age 29-
Of the players who are at least 30 years old, six are at least 35 (and Andy Pettitte will turn 35 June 15th). They are Mike Mussina, Mike Myers, Mariano Rivera, Ron Villone, Jason Giambi and Jorge Posada. Is age a factor or not?
Mussina has had an up-and-down season thus far, broken up by a hamstring strain.
Myers, while he has been criticized by some, has a 3.38 ERA (career ERA is 4.19). A better stat for relievers is WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched). His this year is 1.31. In his career it is 1.43. One thing he has not done much of, though, is stike people out. He is striking out an average of 2.53 hitters per nine innings, while his career average is 7.22 (though not quite that high the past several years).
Rivera, as everyone knows, has struggled. He has just three saves, an amazing stat (and obviously in large part b/c the team has very few wins). His lowest season total in a healthy year since 1997 is 34.
Ron Villone just joined the team, so hasn't really been a factor.
Giambi had a great April (.322 average), four homers, 17 RBIs) but has had a horrible May. Aside from the steroid stuff, he is hitting .148 with two RBIs, both on solo home runs. Ouch.
Posada, on the flip side, is arguably performing at his highest level ever. His .372 average leads the American League. He has six homers and 28 RBIs, and has managed working with an extremely young pitching staff.
But one could certainly say that the slides of Giambi, Rivera, Johnny Damon, Bobby Abreu, etc. could be age-related. That's probably not true of all of them, but most likely some.

at least they have wil nieves...maybe after this year, they will learn to be a bit more frugal and use some common sense. the wost move of all...is igawa. it was a gut reaction to dice-k...george wanted headlines and to 1 up the sawks. the guy has proved he sux. george should worry bout his team..not boston.
just wanna say, torre will take the hit for this debacle, which isnt deserved. altho he probably wants out anyway, but cashman is the one that should go.
off course its Torres fault. Yeah he doesnt pitch and he doesnt hit for the team but neither does he put the Yanks in the best possible position to win nor motivate players. I almost feel like I'm entering Bill Simmons territory now where you root against your team in order for them to make changes that will ultimately benefit the team. Its a lost season so might as well blow it all up and start over. We have some semi decent pieces that clubs could use at the trade deadline. We need to suck it up, sell out, get youth in return and start over. Hopefully whoever our next GM and manager are wont try to rework things mid stride. We have to commit to the rebuilding and just go with it. If we sacrifice this season, call up youngsters and trade for others, and let them play we might be in a much better state to compete for something viable next year. Now bring on the losses
KATWOMAN-
Welcome back to this vaste wasteland known as Yankee Land. With Mo age is an issue. Giambi's decline is more a result of steroid use. Kinda like that anti-steroid commercial, where the statue is falling apart. Damon reported to ST 15 lbs. overweight, left camp for 2 or 3 days for personal reasons, and has never really been "in shape". Age is not the issue with the everyday position players on the Yankees. It is "fire" and "hunger". As long as Torre is at the helm, this team will continue to emulate the Mgr. How "The Boss" can invest $200 million dollars in this team, and continue to let Torre lead this conga line of "sleep walking zombies" is beyond me.
The aging patient's on life-support, the family looks distraught, and the

the patient will respond, he cautions. But the somber demeanor of this
otherwise cheerful man betrays him. If the patient doesn't awaken from her

The Yankees bear an all too great a resemblance this season to the aging
diva-- withered by time, depleted by drugs, and tormented by the success
that came too easily in youth and that she no longer can duplicate. The
flourishes of greatness she exhibits on occasion now only underscore how
much luster she's lost.
She went to Boston last month to relive past triumphs. But misfortune befell

Still, her fans adore her and send her flowers, hoping against hope that
she'll recover-- that Rocket therapy will rouse her from her coma before

ghost.
And if not... Then I will sit beside her, clutch her hand, and offer

this much in her time of crisis

Talking about age, why don't you start with the manager Joe Torre. He should retire, but he's in it for the money. Even before the 2007 season started, he mentioned that he was interested in managing in 2008. That shows that he just wants the 6 million dollars. He's lost many games for the Yankees this year by making the wrong moves. He wears out his bullpen consistently by taking his starter out too soon. He did it again yesterday, by taking out Mussina simply because he walked one batter. He took out Clippard in the 4th when he had just thrown 76 pitches and the score was just 3 to 2. He doesn't let his starters throw 100 pitches and panics and wears out the pen. I am not a monday morning quarterback and have in at least 10 games this season, protested Torre's moves and then I'm proven right by the Yankees losing the game after he makes them. We need a manager that argues calls, that fights for his team. The team has taken the characteristics of the manager, Torre, laid back. I don't think Don Mattingly is the answer because he seems laid back too. I'd rather hire one of the coaches as manager like Bowa or Pena who are fiery types. If not, I would hire Girardi. Firing Cashman will not fire up the team, it's the managerial move that will spark the team. We need to wake up the team NOW and not in late July, when Cashman will then be able to make trades. He has his hands tied up for now because not many teams are willing to make trades this early in the season. Steinbrenner wake up and fire Torre before we lose out in the wild card chase.
Hughes is injured
Rasner is injured
Karstens is injured
Pavano is eternally injured
Wang was injured
Matsui was injured
Posada has played with no injuries and has the highest average in the MLB.
How does youth guarantee
health?
Kat, you'd better watch it with this statement: "Giambi had a great April (.322 average), four homers, 17 RBIs) but has had a horrible May. ASIDE FROM THE STEROID STUFF, he is hitting .148." Wow, why would you accuse him of using steroids this season? This amounts to libel and slander. As a journalist, you should know better. What's wrong with you?
By writing steroid stuff, I meant his comments about steroids to USA Today earlier this month, for which he had to go to the commissioner's office. There is nothing libelous or slander-related in that. I'm saying that Giambi's conversation may have caused him some added distraction, because MLB is not happy and he has to worry about some potential punishment, however unlikely it is that it would stick.
I am suprised that the Yanks didn't make any moves today. This team is not going to get better with time. It is just a bad mix of players, and contracts.Besides Jeter nobody else has stepped up to be a leader. It is time for change NOW!No more of this waiting game. As long as they keep the youngsters as well as Jeter,Mo,Posada,Andy and Wang I don't care who else goes.At this point it can only help. The core players we will bring in can't do any worse than where we are at now.Money ain't gonna buy our problems. It is time we say farewell to those who have came here and done nothing for this team.
Speaking of youth:
Joba Chamberlain

A few random thoughts ...
First, on my recent trip to NY I saw Kat O'Brien's photo in Newsday. I used to deliver Newsday in the snow when I was a little boy. She is carrying on in the steps of many famous sports writers ... Steve Jacobsen, Tom Verducci, Jon Heyman ...
Can the Yankees go 77 - 38 the rest of the way and win the division?
Let's be honest.
Before we talk about age ...
First, I saw The Cash Man interviewed on ESPN via the Sunday night Mets game and he looked absolutely terrified. Like he could not believe what/how the monster he had assembled was doing. Just fear on his face ... like a man digging up landmines for the first time.
Someone said make Mo the Fireman over the Closer and that is a great idea, for ALL of baseball. It is radical but brilliant.
Next, Nudge vs. Eric: This could be very interesting. It is like the hate the Yankees, pro-Boston Olympics.
Next, I just drove back to St. Louis from NY and I was in Midtown Manhattan on Friday at 5 pm and it was just C R A Z Y! How can anyone live there? Lots of energy yes, but how much of it is good energy? What a nightmare. Of course Mike Hampton couldn't deal with living in Trump Tower ... how do the rest of you mortals do it?
Josh Hamilton (who has a tummy ache) update from the May 27th, 2007 Dayton Daily News, Jerry Narron, the Red manager said, "Shoot, the rookie of the month of April? Doing everything in the outfield for us? A threat every time he comes up to bat? How does that help us?"
Why do we have Abreu and not Josh? Josh is ML minimum. Abreu is 16 mil. We've had other drug addicts, Straw, Badden, Howe, why not help Josh? Mo and Andy would keep him on a right path. Cash Man is not bargain hunting anymore. Where are deals for Cone and Wells, (not them, pitchers like them).
I see Tyler Johnson on St L is a lefty with a 1.10 ERA. The Cards are not doing well, raid their bullpen, filled with excellent arms. Even Braden Looper has been straightened out by Dave Duncan.
So much for Weaver (14.32 ERA or something chilling like that), Kip Wells (did great vs. Cards while with the Gladys Knights and the Pittsburgers), Agent Mulder, Carp.
Sigh ...
A look around the league, using the Tuesday May 22nd, 2007 edition of the USA Today.
Two guys we should look into getting from the O's.
Adam Loewen
Trachsel
Loewen is from Acidrania (I mean Canada) and blew away Team USA at the world baseball thingy.
Trachsel is throwing pretty well and eats innings. Like of a poor man's Mussina.
Vazques is doing ok with the White Sox.
Jeremy Sowers is a real mystery this year.
Any chance to get Travis Hafner or Todd Helton?
Would you rather have Sheff or Bobby A?
Could we turn around Zack Greinke?
Yanks Pen could be ...
Britton
Henn
Bruney
Proctor
Mo
Villone (or trade for Francis from Colorado, please include Farnsworth in the deal)
Ty Wiggington is a pretty good player. The Mets brought him up yes? Another feather in their cap even though he is with TB.
Josh Hamilton 8 HR already ... best bat speed in the game. Great arm ...
Can we sign Mark Teixeira? He strikes out a lot.
Frank Catalanotto is having a down year. He and Sowers are two guys we could get and fix. No? And Greinke.
A.J. Burnett averaging a K per inning.
Randy Johnson, 47 K's in 35.2 innings and that means he is still throwing hard.
Jason Marquis can HIT and pitch!
What about trying for Dan Uggla?
Why didn't we sign Mark Loretta, one of my fav. players?
Dan Wheeler is another ex-Met doing well. Imagine if the Mets still had Wiggy, Wheeler and Kazmir? They would be chilling to watch.
Randy Wolf is throwing hard and doing great for L.A. Jake Peavy is a great pitcher too. We need guys like that.
What about trying to get Geoff Jenkins? Why can't we sign guys like J.J. Hardy out of high school? Too busy looking for the next Igawa, I know.
How about trying for Zimmerman from the Nationals? We could send him a letter, like the Germans did to Mexico during World War I ...
Just my two cents ...
Here’s what I think we should do:
1. Fire Torre, hire Mattingly: It’s obvious he’s not going to here next season anyway, so I would thank him for his great run here and make the change. I’ll give Mattingly the rest of this season to see what he can do. If we like what we see out of him and the team, he is the manager for the 2008 season and beyond. If he’s not looking that good, bring in Girardi to manage after this season. If possible, make Girardi Mattingly’s bench coach.
2. Keep Cashman. The man has made several poor moves, but he knows that the best way to get the Yanks out of this mess is building through the farm like they did that helped create the 96-00 dynasty. Another GM might give away our prospects and future and we’d be taking a big step back.
3. Our Starting pitching next season should look like: Wang, Pettitte (he’ll be back), Hughes, Mussina (wish he wasn’t brought back), Clippard
- Kennedy is coming along nicely and can possibly be in the Bronx by late next season and possibly Joba as well. I still have faith in Sanchez and Ohlendorf, too.
- Fortunately, the minor league systems are loaded with talented young pitchers (I believe Baseball America has ranked the Yankees as the #1 system as far as pitching in baseball), which means we can use all other assets we have to improve other aspects of this ballclub.
4. For our bullpen- bring back Rivera (even if he isn’t still dominant), and Proctor and Bruney are keepers. Add Cox, Britton, Whelan, and Henn and we have a pretty good mix there, too.
- Trade Farnsworth, get rid of Vizcaino and Myers.
5. Unfortunately, we don’t have many great hitting prospects other than Tabata, who is still a couple years away from being ready. Bring back A-Rod (I think they will), with Jeter, Cano, and Matsui. Bring back Posada. Let’s see if Melky is an everyday player at CF because Damon is scary to watch out there. Perhaps Eric and Shelley Duncan can help soon.
- Let Abreu go. It wouldn’t surprise me if we sign Ichiro and/or Andruw Jones after this season, and trade for or sign Texeria, who we desperately need to fill the massive hole at 1B. Let Giambi go after next season, who is handcuffing this team.
6. Make the bench a higher priority! Cashman has to give the bench more attention because it’s a big problem when Phelps is the best player on the bench. There was a time when we had guys like Fielder and Boggs coming in. We need to get back to that.
Why are all of Kat's posts either negative about the Yankees or about her personal life?
Kat: very interesting question with many possibilities to the answer.
Johnny Damon: No longer everyday CF but more helpful to the team as the DH with occassional spot work in CF so Melky can give HM and BA relief. Injuries related to overweight, bad weather and age. Body cannot overcome the issues.
Jason Giambi: is washed up. We are saddled with a longterm contract. He should play some firstbase but not much. He has no bat speed plus steroid abuse is causing many issues.
Bobby Abreu is in a rapid decline and unless his play picks up. The Yankees should not pick up his option for trade. No injuries slowing him up.
Matsui, good guy but is in a hitting slump. He is trying to pull everything but is a fielding liabilty. No way can patrol leftfield and thats saying alot when Yogi use to patrol it in his later years.
Jorge. Hip Hip Jorge, Hip, Hip Jorge. The guy is hitting his best and would be a very good DH if we had a good catcher to take his place. Will slowdown toward the hot summer months.
Doug M. starting to get the bat on the ball if he hits his career numbers would be OK.
Wang, Hughes, Clipperd and DeSalvo throw in the nineties could have promise for the future. Mussina has no life on the fastball should get between 12-15 wins but must go longer in games. Pettite is pitching well, no issues. If the team continues its slide. Andy may have to be coaxed to pitch next year.
Mo needs work. Proctor is good but has to be used properly. Meyers and Viscaiano just say goodby. Bring back Henn and Britton.
Jeter is Jeter. Arod needs to be signed to an extension. One of the best 3rd basemen of anytime. Cano is starting to wake up and should be a permanent fixture.
Cairo: we could do better here. He's not a premier backup. Nieves is the backup. What is the reality for a backup. He's not Eelston Howard or Johnny Blanchard. Phelps: I believe would hit if given oppts.
The guys to be traded if possible in order are Giambi, Farnsworth, Viscaiano, release Meyers.
Joe Torre his moves have no strategy because he trusts only a certain few and the players know or sense where they fall. Joe is burnt out cannot trust younger players and if ateam is in transition. Younger players must be trusted and mistakes overlooked. Younger players make things happen. Joe should be allowed to complete the season with respect and not be harried throughout the season. A youngermore energetic replacement should be found or energetic such as Pena.
This team has been flawed for 3or 4 years with longterm contracts and aging players. This year many of the flaws are servicing with the variables of age, weather and injuries. We will be a better team in 2 years but next year maybe more of the same unless we can get rid ourselves of the bad contracts.
Larry M:
Sadly, I agree with you 98 % on your detailed post in the previous thread.
The one guy I disagree about is Mo. 3 saves, 3 losses, 5 (I think) blown saves. Lousy ERA and WHIP. We are 2-9 in one run games, the kind he used to shut down like a machine.
Nobody wants to put him under the microscope because he has achieved (and earned) god-like status. It's scary, but necessary, to contemplate Life After Mo. It's more comforting to keep repeating the mantra "Mo will still be Mo". Someday he won't be Mo any more and that day may be today.
The Bill James/Sabermetrics people have calculated, based on 100 years of stats, that a MLB position player has his peak years from 27-29. Pitchers 28-30 or 29-31. That was a little surprising for me to read but, if you trust their research, where does that leave us with all of our 33 and up guys. Even JETER turns 33 next month, for god's sake !
The water's rising and the Good Ship Steinbrenner be sinkin'.
Zander: I watch the guys every oppt. that I get. You know the things that come to my mind are age and length remaining on the contract as the player enters the batters box. We have to bite the bullet and soon. If we start to get young fast by trading or eating some contracts then you can't blame Joe or Cashman. Its the whole org. thats not thinking clearly. As far as stats on peek performances according to the age and position. We know thats plus or minus depending on ability of athlete. So, we could get some room for error but years of dumping good young players for older established players is really biting us in the a$$. And the league is laughing all the way to the bank with the luxury tax money. George S. is as much at fault as anyone.
Larry:
In the coprporate world they call this a "turnaround" situation. But George is seemingly no longer capable of orchestrating a big-time rebuilding project. Losing Steve Swindal and the current uncertainty over the ownership situation is a further problem. Even if Cashman continues to be given the authority to run things, I sometimes see him as an enthusiastic, hard-working adolescent kid in over his head. A lot of his tenure with NYY has been as an intern and gofer.
Outside of Tabata and Cervelli, we have damn few position prospects in the minors. I'm not sure how we solve that over the next year or two. Maybe go after Torii Hunter and/or Mark Teixeira. They're young, durable and productive. Mark Buehrle is 29, a LHP, and a 200 innings guy.
Everyone on the blogs wants Mattingly or Girardi. I want Bobby Valentine !
As far as FA's, we're not the only guys in town but I watched with much respect the LAA. This org. apparently knows the right and wrong players to draft plus their farm system is well stocked. Our system looks like a few trees standing after a typoon which has to end. We can't continue to chase players at the age of 32 and sign for 4 years. We have Damon and Matsui in this situation. We will have to retool the factory with some FA's. Hopefully we could pay more but not long term contracts such as 4 or more.
I believe that we have to sign Arod to an extension but on the down side Jeter is 34 next year. What can we expect this guy to do. Play 150 games at SS and make less than 15 errors. This is not realistic. So, my thinking is better drafts and hold on to these young kids.
I'm not in favor of Mattingly. Giradi and Pena interest me. Valentine has many pluses but I have heard players have issues with him.
ZANDER
The Yanks no doubt need to move 2 or 3 pieces of dead wood ,Giambi,Abreu certainly and they need to rebuild the bullpen which could be done sometime soon at least temporarily promoting Britton and Ramirez.I think they've returned Henn back to starting.
I'm sure Teixeira is on Yankee radar.Buehrle would be a good fit but at what cost?
I'm hoping MLB will throw Giambi a curve and suspend him.Probably won't happen.
Why Valentine ? You have to explain that one!
Great post, Kat.
It's not so much the age.
It's the player and what role he plays on the team. In '96, Mariano Duncan wasn't expected to contribute much, but was HUGE all season long. Ruben Sierra enjoyed a great second go-round with the Yankees, because not much was expected of him and he over-delivered. The last two years of his career, Paul O'Neill wasn't exactly Mark McGwire, but any Yankee fan would surely take his contributions over anything they're getting now from Giambi, Abreu, etc.
Cashman doesn't need to do a better job of getting younger players. He just needs to do a better job. Period.
LARRY
With all due respect I've been following the Angels farm system and outside of
Brandon Wood ss
Nick Adenhart rhp
Sean Rodriquez ss
Jose Arredondo rhp
there isn't much to write home about.
The heralded prospects are all in the majors
Erick Aybar
Jered Weaver
Howie Kendrick
Casey Kotchman
and A.Callaspo who they traded to the D-Backs.
Larry M and Ruse:
I like Valentine because:
1. Intelligence
2. Innovative/ willing to take risks and experiment
3. Fiery temperment
4. Experience with NY media
5. Some players have had "issues" with him ? GOOD! Nobody has issues with Somnolent Joe because he's not demanding. He simply "expects" "professionals" to play hard.
ESPN is showing Clemens. Looking good but only throwing 89 mph.
What do you guys think about my comments about Mo above. Could it be NO ONE is willing to even contemplate the possibility that Mo is toast?
Clemens
6 IP
2 hits
0 runs
6 SO
89 pitches
ZANDER
I still think MO is a good pitcher. The Yanks should extend him a 1 yr deal w/mutual option.
If you look at relief pitchers there is a tendency at the age of 37-38 to lose it.
Of course there are exceptions. No wonder only 4 ? relievers have over 400 saves.
Yanks have a farm system that is well stocked w/up and coming relievers.
Ruse:
I'm not suggesting Mo is no good or that we shouldn't sign him for one more year. But he's no longer dominant and may not even be very good any more. We'll really miss him.
Zander
I'm sure all of us to a degree are surely concerned and are aware of the possibility that MO is on the decline. And I agree that not having a plan for the future-"life after Mo" I think will be Cashman's greatest failure. There is no excuse for not having an "understudy" of some sort this late in his awesome career. It borders on disrespect in my opinion. There will never be another Mo but the fact that we don't have a clear heir to the "closer throne" by now when he's in his late 30's? Is ridiculus.
Michael:
We've got F-Worth ! No Problemo!
ruse,Ca. I watched those 4 guys all weekend. The system to produce 4 at mlb level is quite good. They seemed to dismantle us pretty well.
ZANDER
I tend to think the problem w/ Mo is more about inactivity and losing the edge that comes w/regularly pitching in competition .What was the last time he was in a save situation?
I will not discount the fact age might be entering into it.
Zander
HAH HOW DID I FORGET!!!! LOL
I think this "age" issue is "much ado about nothing". 17 players being age 30+ is no big deal. Generally, a players prime years are from roughly 29-33\34. Maybe even longer considering how well players currently take care of themselves, (Damon aside). Most players don't even play regularly in the "Bigs" till they are 27 or 28. Age is not the reason the Yanks have been losing this season. It is "attitude" and "effort". This is where a Mgr. is supposed to have his biggest impact on a team's performance. Torre should be fired immediately, and Girardi hired.
You're right, age is much todo about nothing, and I will leave it at that with no further ado.
Clemens is over 40 and he looked great today. Schilling and Randy still pitching. Who else? Age issue is nonsense.
Zander, I don't know how Sabermetrics can factor in 100 years of history in determining athletic longevity because people are now living longer and are healthier than ever before. Based on their results (which don't make sense to me at all), I kind of doubt they're taking into account important considerations that were either non-existent or less sophisticated last century (especially early on), such as:
- new cures for illness and disease
- sophisticated imaging technology to detect abnormalties (e.g. MRI's)
- improved non-intrusive surgical methods, (e.g. lasers)
- sophisticated replacement and reconstructive surgeries (e.g. Tommy John surgery)
- drugs and techniques to expedite healing
- more effective medicine to alleviate pain
- better exercise techniques to improve strength and endurance
- more sophisticated pitching and hitting techniques
- a more scientific and intelligent approach to the game with the use of computerized stats and videos
- the daily use of closers and relief pitchers to save the arms of starters
- players starting out in the Majors at 22, 23 years of age and rarely before.
There’s probably more that I missed. I think the system needs to take these factors into consideration and make some adjustments because the results are clearly inconsistent with the impressive veteran talent we commonly see in the MLB today.
Time to relieve Joe Torre from his misery. Girardi and Mattingly can share the duties, with Girardi being the no.1, for the rest of the year. Say goodbye to Guidry as the pitching coach. Loved him as a player, not so much as a pitching coach. Kerrigan can handle these duties the rest of the way. Kevin Long should be sent back to AAA, and Mattingly should serve dual role - bench coach/hitting coach. Also, allow Jeter to lead off for the rest of the year, with Damon and Cano sharing hitting second. Gotta also try to trade Abreu for a right handed hitting outfielder. Probably will have to include 1 or 2 minor league pitchers plus cash to get this done. And finally, release Myers, trade Farnsworth, bring back Henn, and let Henn/Bruney share 8th inning set up duties, like Stanton/Nelson did a while ago. Procter and Villone can handle 6th, 7th inning duties. This will fix all of the Yankees problems, I guarantee it!
Lucy your posts are great!
The fall of the yankees began when Cashman traded Mike Lowell for pitcher who could not aim the ball over the plate(knobloch disease). Can't emember the pitchers' name. Next blinder was signing Scheffield when they could have had Guerrero. Passing on Carlos Beltran who offerred to take less $ to play for Yankees.
Now they are stuck with Damon. They let Jon Lieber and Orlando Hernandez go. Cashman has yet to make a postive good trade, while Oscar Minaya GM Mets gets anyone he wants. Same for Theo Epstein. Cashman turned down Ted Lily. Bad signings:Kevin Brown Randy Johnson, Tony Womack,Kyle Farnsworth. The list goes on and on. It is coming home to roost in an awful way.
