Giambi talk

Jason Giambi met with MLB officials at the commissioner's office today regarding his comments to USA Today last week that came close to an admission of steroid use. The New York Daily News reported today that Giambi also failed an amphetamines test, which Newsday has confirmed. Giambi would not comment on that.

NEW YORK -- Jason Giambi met with lawyers for the commissioner's office Wednesday to discuss recent comments that some interpreted as an admission of steroids use.

"The commissioner requested that Jason come in in response to the USA Today piece. Jason was interviewed this morning,'' union general counsel Michael Weiner said.

The meeting came the same day that the New York Daily News reported that Giambi had failed an amphetamines test within the past year.

The newspaper reported that with the failed amphetamines test, Giambi has been subjected to six additional tests for one year. The newspaper did not cite any sources in its report.

But according to ESPN's Peter Gammons, multiple sources are questioning whether the report is true.

Giambi has not been asked to take follow-up tests, which is what would occur if he had a first positive test for amphetamines.

Also, Gammons reports that the subject of amphetamines was not raised at Wednesday's meeting.

Giambi declined comment to the newspaper before the New York Yankees' 7-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.

"I can't really talk about anything," Giambi told The Daily News before last night's game. Giambi's agent, Arn Tellem, also declined comment to the Daily News.

The Yankees slugger, in an interview with USA Today last Friday, said he was "probably tested more than anybody else."

The Daily News reported Giambi arrived at Major League Baseball's Park Avenue headquarters in New York at about noon on Wednesday. He met with baseball executives for an hour before he left shortly after 1 p.m.

"I was wrong for doing that stuff," the New York Yankees designated hitter was quoted as saying, remarks some have interpreted as an admission of steroids use.[/quote]

Francona's response on WEEI

"Terry, so, tell us what you thought of Arod's slide to break up a potential DP last night...did you see anything there?"

"Well, fellas, I'll just say that we have another game tonight, and you can ask me that question again after we have played it..."

Yeah...If I were Arod, and I was running from 1st to 2nd, I'd be sure that if it were a potential DP, I'd be lying prone on the ground between 1st and 2nd this time.

Oh, and BTW...I have TiVo...I watched for the illusive "Pedrioa tried the same thing to Jeter" play, and it was not even CLOSE to Arod's "slide"...I could care less if Arod went into 2nd hard and upended Pedrioa...that's clearly not what happened. Everyone knows it, you know it, the papers got it on film, and it's being talked about...period.

Personally, I hope Schill does not hit Arod and I doubt he will...I'd like to see Pedrioa have a little "conversation" with Arod...

Pedroia makes David Eckstein look like Mo Vaughn, I somehow doubt there will be any "conversation" between him and A-Rod.

as i posted on another site Boston complaining about dirty play is like nixon complaining about ethics or ken lay.

what a joke and BTW it was not a dirty play but hell with the facts....

Permitted it doesn't break any ribs I WISH SHILLING WOULD HIT AROD TONIGHT-But only under on condition...

After being hit, Alex must drop the bat, charge the mound full speed and delivers Ronnie Lott style vengeance on that fat ignorant blowhard jackass. OH I WISH I WISH!!!

The melee would be huge and potentially dangerous considering the disparity in age between the two clubs but it's one that I believe we need.

If 10.5 games can't inspire these guys maybe hand to hand combat will?

Redsox as organization, players and fans are the biggest whiners in sports today.
they have a double digit lead, yet they're still consumed with playing the role of victims and underdogs.

Jeter gets hit all the time while Ortiz escapes unscathed.
They get more favorable calls from umps and cries muder when one goes against them.
The owners accuse Yanks of being evil empire, when what they really want is taking that title away from Yanks.

Act like you've been there before. You did finally win in 2004, did you already forget?
Stop playing the role of victims

Breaking News Rajah of Rehab aka Carl Pavano is going Tommy John Surgery will be out a year.......

Yeah, I want to see Pedroia take on A-Rod!!!
HA HA HA LMAO!!!!

As stated earlier by Moi, Pedroia is an insignificant little creep!!!

If Francona said that, and I doubt that he did because he's one of the classiest guys in the sport, then shame on him!

yo, Phucktheredsox,
That would be hilarious if that did happen, Shilling gets nailed by A Rod, even if the Ynaks didnt win the game it would be the best situation or charge the mound I have ever seen, and the maybe the best act ever in sports! Shilling sux!

Pavano just fell 19 wins short of the 20 we all thought he would give us.

Thanks for the memories, Carl and, yes, we'll still give you a World Series ring this year for your contributions.

Is there any chance that the Yankees can recoup some of the wasted money with Pavano? I hope he rots in hell.

Hey how about that? The Yanks got a call. :-)

Back from a long afternoon of OSL [off screen life] in time to start the game but very little time to skim all the postings I missed. Looks like a lot of "frothing at the keyboard" as someone here put it recently, but that usually happens after painful losses.

Now I want to see if there are howls of outrage at the dreadful call just made at second base.

Redsox Fans are whining about Coco being safe.. How about Play last night when Coco was called safe??

Quote from Redsox Fans

Yeah, the umps are conspiring against the Yankees.

Never touched him. The ump should feel bad abotu that one (but probably won't, of course)

cano just got picked off first. Why does everything that guy does bother me so much more than when, say posada or jeter fail? Maybe it's because those guys act like they give a sh*t.

It wasn't cano; it was Bobby "I can't see the ball" Abreu.

What an idiot!!! He doesn't even slide back to the bag!

he makes me sick!!!

Abreu got picked off 1st not Cano.
Bobby "Narcolepsy" Abreu.

I'd like to see the Yanks really take it to Schilling this inning and tack on a few more runs.

No?

And nobody putting down Francona for not kicking dirt? Suggesting he should be fired? No?

Oh well.

So much for impartial justice.

What was I thinking...

Congrats to Jeter on passing DiMaggio on the all-time Yankees' hit list!!!

Jeff,
In the immortal words of Ed Norton, "May I echo those woids"

Papi v. Andy

this is important.

BIG, BIG OUT!!!

Cano was in the outfield for that ball!!

Diane his focus..It's Night n Day since you became took over. ;)

Posada...just... keeps hitting.

Oh no!!!

Bobby "I can't see" Abreu.

I smell a DP!

Michael,

We can only hope he has learned his lesson for good, because it's a one-time treatment. You wouldn't want to know what happens to grown men if it's used twice.

I knew it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously what is wrong with Abreu ? and what's up w/ tiger lilly ?

You'd think Bobby could join the "hit parade" we've got going...

John G.

You called it.

Abreu has already GDP 9 times this year. That's close to his seasonal average.Man!

Great DP!!

I think that there's something wrong with his eyes. I mean, what else could it be? O'Neill said last night that he thinks Bobby "I can't see" Abreu is having trouble seeing the ball.
He needs to get the peepers checked at the very least.

Doug?

I hope that I look that good when I'm 80!

Did you see that guy?

"Mienky"!!!!!!

What's up with Ramirez flashing the leather?

Nice play!!

Quote- from jtn46 a Redsox Fan

"Hey Yankees, need some momentum? Here you go!

F*cking suckass series. Really, we only needed to win one, but if the Yankees go on a tear here and get back into things, this is going to be the turning point..."

Schilling looks like their Mussina.

Michael,

Not Doug. Abreu.

If that's what you were asking.

some observations:

posada: give him an extension pronto. make it long term. you get a catcher for a couple more years then a DH. imagine him as a switch hitting DH without the wear and tear of catching. the yanks can do no better.

abreu: nothing in the future will change my opinion about this loser. when you're slumping so bad, there's no way you can afford to get picked off due to napping. and then the mandatory DP. fat, slow, careless. the ultimate anti-yankee.

damon, cano: both seem to be getting back somewhat. i think that while defending him, torre compared cano to soriano, and cano may have picked up a hint there, remembering how the former's career ended with the yanks, fed up with his lack of plate discipline and shaky play on defense. good job both.

giambi: i think we all understand why his body is so frail and injury prone and accept the fact that he'll never resemble the a's slugger he was. however, i really believe his conscience is eating him up regarding the 'roids, which is much better than former retired players who had no contract to lose and yet chose to lie or withold the truth from grand juries and congressional hearings.

jeter: saved him for last. i feel it's been a privilege watching him since 1995. by far my favorite athlete, despite, and perhaps because, he never says anything juicy in an interview, just keeps hammering the same mantra about what was it? oh yes - winning.
for me he is the athlete you want young kids to emulate, for the following reasons:
1) respects the game.
2) never takes away focus from the game or the team.
3) totally committed to the team and does the little things to make the team better.
4) oblivious to personal accolades.
5) has fun while playing, smiles, but remains super intense.
6) the ultimate competitor.
7) super clutch.
8) a real winner.
i think it's amazing he'll finish his career as the all time yanks hit leader, in front of gherig, ruth et al.
keep it up!

Anon,

He's panicking.

I don't know why: his "boys" have a 9 1/2 game lead on us.

Jeez !! Send this guy to the minors !

as i was posting this long analysis, that $%^#&#%&@ abreu dropped a fly ball.
i swear to god, i'm deferring his case to toni soprano.

Bobb-EEE "I can't see" Abreuuuu!!!

Andy had to show Abreu how it's done around here.

Gil,

Exactly. A privilege.

And, one more reason -- in spite of intense media scrutiny, has never embarrassed the team in his off-the-field life.

GIL

Torre should sit Abreu' ass down .He's a saboteur.

Bobby "I can't see" Abreu had better get his act together or else the yanks are going to send him back to play for the "Hugo Chavez all stars" in Venezula. He won't get 15 million a year playing for them.

WHERE IS CASUAL WHEN YOU NEED HIM??

I wonder if they-(IE Redsox) fans feel like we do about Mussina about Schilling.

I'd be interested to see the rants on the redsox blogs about Schilling right now.

CURSE YOU CASUAL!!!

YOU ONLY SHOW UP WHEN WE ARE SUFFERING YOU'RE NOT A FAIR OBSERVER!!

PHUCKER

What happened to Casual-Stunt-Double ?

Phucker,
I find that hard to believe, I bet Bosox fans love Schilling to death, the main difference between he and Moose being that Schilling has one championships and is a fierce competitor, even if he is a complete jerk. Moose just has the jerk part down.

Schilling has 2 rings: 2001 (D'backs) and we all know the other one.

RUSE

LMAO *FIST BUMPS*

John G: I mean "won championships", I guess that extra beer w/ dinner was a bad idea.

Randy Johnson will miss his next start w/ forearm tendinitis...didn't Pavano have that a few weeks ago? Maybe Dr. Andrews has room for two on the table?

Jim

Yeah you're probably right. I just was wondering if they're worried about him and his "efficacy" at this point.

We've lit him up twice now. You would think a redsox fan would share similar concerns that we share about Mussina...

OH WAIT I JUST GOT WORD CASUALS STUNT DOUBLE HAS JUST ARRIVED!!!

STANDBY...

Jim A,

Well, at least you HAD dinner and a brew or two! :-)

I'm still at work. Getting ready to leave.

I'm on my way home.

Talk to you guys tomorrow.

Abreu:

grounded out into a double play, was picked off first, and dropped a ball in the outfield.

Pick a guy (or girl) out of the stands and let him finish out the game in right field.

See ya John!

Clemens is in the 6th inning score tied 2-2 at Trenton.

I'm here.

Schilling doesn't have it.

Phucker,

To answer your question...

We're not worried one bit. Nor should we be.

Your comparison of the two is sad, but true symptomatic proof of your own and fellow yankee fans-obvious but very real sense of desperation.

Phuck and others...

We have depth.

We have a bench.

We have a plus plus back up catcher.

We have a bear hunter at first base you have some guy named Doug that we cut.

We have Lester. You have Hughes. Who do you think is better? A Kid who threw a near no hitter? Or a kid who literally beat CANCER!!

This is just one game people. Besides the angels could literally let mike scoscia pitch against you and they'd still find a way to sweep you.

I've yet to reconcile scoscia's yankee killing abilities they're almost otherworldly.

Anyway...

Casual will be back soon-provided that the yanks lose and the sox win. Until then I'll be here to fill in his stead.

Good night and good luck yankee fans...

CSD

another pathetic FA signing by cashman making his presence felt...

i know for sure we have guys in the minors who can be useful bullpen cogs. i'd gladly take a gamble on a question mark than this idiot who cannot be trusted in a 6-run lead situation!!!

Thank You CSD for as always your brilliant analysis !

Ruse

They are shoes...And then there are Casuals...

I appreciate the kind words but I'll never be anything more than a a substitute.

The honor is all mine.

CSD

CSD, Thank you for wrapping this up so we can go to bed with a smile and enjoy our off day tomorrow. I know Casual himself must be planning to send you a token of gratitude.

Good work CSD.

Nice to know that I have someone watching by back.

DA-amn!....did Schilling suck or what?...I mean he was soooo bad that even Abreau got a hit.

Nice win for the Yanks....great work by their warrior Pettite. Reasons for hope for you Yank fans.

Phuck...you will notice that I am rarely in here during games....

By the way,

Jim A. hit the nail on the head with his post on Schilling.

As far as the Red Sox unconditional LOVE for Schilling, let's see how long it continues if he continues losing games. They don't expect that he will, so they can afford to be forgiving, especially since they're so far ahead in the standings. But hypothetically speaking, if he does nothing but lose from this day forward, do you think they're still going to cheer him on if he contributes to their demise? My guess is that their loving marriage thrives only as long as he continues to win games. The whole undying martyrdom attitude Schilling is hilarious.

Lucy,

Pretty "rich" comments from a Yankee fan who idolizes Jeter as well as so many others. Isn't basball, at least in part, about having hero's. Why is it different because it's Schilling or the Red Sox? Not to mention the fact that as a Yankee fan how ewould you know what most Sox fan's feel regarding Schilling?

You likely dont.

Schilling does have his place in Sox lore secured..and why not...after-all he led the 04 team to a title. He did pitch his best when the season was all but lost. That is the stuff of legend....much like you Yankee fans love of the great players from the late 90's teams.

He is also an arrogant jerk who typically puts his mouth into gear without first engaging his brain. Most of us are quite aware of it....Sox fans as well as others.

The man may not be the power pitcher he once was, but he IS still a fierce competitor who wants to win at any cost.

This is likely his last season with the Sox....I suspect he will win more than he loses...in fact I'm willing to say he will win 15+ games.

All in all...most of us Sox fans will never forget what he meant to this franchise in the magic season of '04...and what he continues to strive to do every time he takes the mound....it makes it a bit easier to overlook the mouth issue.

CO,
Do you really think he will leave Boston after this season? I'd find that very hard to believe, unless he totally tanks, which he hasn't so far. Last night was probably just a bad night for him. I think he taints his place in Sox history if he leaves on his own but it may not be up to him I guess. Maybe it all depends on how Lester comes back from cancer. I wish Lester all the best, except when pitching against the Yanks (had to throw that in there or I would get clobbered on this blog).

Casual, I don't idolize Jeter.

I believe that both Red Sox and Yankees fans are the same. It's absolutely one thing to love and respect a player for what he's done in the past, whereby he becomes a hero, but if he continues to go out and lose games consistently, the fans just aren't that tolerant. They're not going to want to see him continue pitching and they're not going to love him for doing so. If he gets out while he's ahead, that's a different story.

I can tell you if Mussina started winning every game resulting in a World Series win, all his present naysayers would turn into his idolaters. They would absolutely love him. Mussina has won many games for our franchise, but we soon forget as soon as he starts losing games.

Jim A.,

Just a 'gut' feeling on my part, but yes...I do think that Schilling will be pitching for another team next year...unless he is willing to accept a 'secondary' role and salary to match. We both know his ego would not allow for that.

I believe that the Sox have plans for the $13mm that they are paying Schilling...and with Beckett, Matsuzaka, a healthy Lester, to anchor the rotation and with up and comers like Buchholtz, and the resurrgence of Kyle Snyder, it would seem the Sox may be in the position that guys like Wakefield and Schilling are expendable unless they are willing to take deals like the one the Sox have with Wakefield.

Lucy,

Hopefully most Sox fans are not as fickle as you may think. Schilling sucked last night...so what....it happens....he still has more strong, solid outings and wins, than bad outings and losses.

Most of us realize that Schilling is not the "ace" of this staff any longer...but he is still valuable...still a great competitor...and frankly, in a "must win" game...I'd feel no qualms about him on the mound for the Sox.

Put it this way Jim A.,

Right now Damon is detsted by most Sox fans and labeled a traitor....the audacity of him taking the money and running of to the MFY's..you know?

It's all bs.....the minute Johnny retires or goes to another team...there aint a bar in Boston where he would have to pay for his beer.

He will always be loved in Boston (once he leaves NY or retires)

Same with Schilling if he leaves for another team.

Dave Roberts played a very small role on the '04 Sox team....BUT, that stolen base in the ALCS will always put him in the list of hero's in Beantown. He will never need to pay for another beer in Boston.

and so on.

Of course you feel that way about him, Casual. I was hypothetically speaking in my post, but that went by the wayside.

Of course, the Red Sox didn't NEED to win last night. They've already clinched the division -- what, they didn't? Oh, gee, now where did I get the impression that they already did?

Well Lucy,

I have never said the Sox have clinched anything. I have never been arrogant, or rubbed the Yanks struggles in the face on the good folks in here.....aint my style. I do, and will continue to point out obvious trends...which is the Sox ARE still up 9 1/2 games...and have a very good and a very balanced team...and I feel confident in saying that no one in the east will catch them IF they continue to play as they are. That is not a slight on the Yanks....it is an endorsement of the Sox.

Dont be so touchy.

Just another quick observation......

I have predicted the demise of Moose for the last three years.....so far I've been wrong, wrong, and wrong again. So, even though it appears he has lost it.....he may go out and win 7-8 in a row. He's done it before.

Casual, some Red Sox fans are saying they only NEEDED to win one game this series, therefore, losing two games to the Yankees is irrelevant. This is based on past performances thus far this season (taking for granted the season will continue in like fashion). While the Sox need not be concerned about last night's loss per se, I don't know that they should nonchalantly be shrugging off a lost series to the Yankees (or any team, for that matter) this early in the season. 9 1/2 games behind is not a lot when you have 117 games left to play.

The Sox "need" to win every game...or at least play to win every game. Any one who says otherwise is a meathead.

exactly about damon,

He could win TWO WS series here once he retires though it's too boston he goes to talk about his past. He may appear on some yankee films but Boston holds his heart at the end

The following is just a baseball fantasy and I know that it won't happen, but wouldn't it be nice if the Yankees could unload Jason Giambi along with his contract and then trade for a " real " centerfielder in Torii Hunter and put Johnny Damon as the permanent DH? Then to put the icing on the cake, the Yankees would get a "real " first baseman in Todd Helton ( I'd rather have Texeira, but that would almost be impossible )with his .480 obp and .998 fpct at 1st base. Then you would have a well balanced line-up.
dh Damon L
ss Jeter R
lf Matsui L
3b A-Rod R
rf Abreu L
cf Hunter R
1b Helton L
C Posasda R
2b Cano L

The line-up we have right now is too inconsistent, non-clutch and have too many lefty hitters which puts them at the mercy of teams with lots of lefty pitchers like the Mets.

POSADA AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ORDER?? NAAAH. ACTUALLY OUT OF ALL THE UNDER PERFORMERS I WOULD KEEP DOUG M
