Funny moment from the clubhouse earlier: Wil Nieves walked by myself and Lisa Kennelly of the Star-Ledger and Kim Jones of the YES Network. It's Mother's Day (Happy Mother's Day to my mom and all the moms out there), so he asked if any of us were mothers. We said, no. A couple minutes later, he came back by and said, "Happy Mother's Day anyway, just in case."

I'm glad Nieves is a witty raconteur. It certainly compensates for the fact that he is one-for-the-season. And that one shouldn't even count since he was thrown out stretching by 15 feet. But he's a high energy guy and the pitchers love throwing to him, so Torre loves him. By the way, NOBODY ever says they love throwing to Posada. Au contraire, several guys like Randy J. have insisted on a personal catcher, not Jorgie. Hmmm.
Wow are the Yankees horrible. Like I said, peeps, enjoy your 70-92 season- LMFAO.
Don't you know AR is thanking his lucky stars that he was smart enough and lucky enough to get out of Seattle before that yard ruined his numbers?
Pettitte, so far has had the worst luck in the majors. Don't be fooled by his 2-2 record, he should be like 5-2, 4-1 , Thanks to Yankees bullpen blowing three games for him. Today, the offense can only manage 2 bumble f*cking runs off horacio ramirez, and in the oakland & boston games mo has blown saves when Pettitte left in line for a win
thank god for jeter...only guy on team that can produce a run with runner in scoring position. seems to be the only one recently..make that all day so far, that can produce.
another negative about getting rocket...chances of canning torre now are like chances of nieves getting a HR.
saw lots of high-priced, 20 mill/ yr. K's in the last 2 innigs today.
need a shake-up badly
Gotta love the Red Sux fans' stupidity. They are the champions of April and May. The Yankees have been getting great starting pitching lately and that was their problem. They will go on a winning streak real soon and they will be right back in it. BTW Moron Red Sux and New York Mutt fans, all the Yankees have to do is make the playoffs and i like their chances of winning it all. Their starters are their strenght of their team. Pettitte, Wang, Clemens, Mussina doesn't sound too bad. I will take that over many MLB teams. And how knows where Phil Hughes will be along in October. So keep the faith and dont let the morons get you down.

We look like we did vs. Detroit in the playoffs last year, asleep...I don't want another repeat of that this year....we have been spoiled as fans of a dynasty, 4 championships in 5 years, 14 straight World Series game victories from 96-2000....its time to really rebuild like we did in 90-94 and then add the missing parts through free agency, this is what should have been done in 2001 and we would not have been where we are now...it will be POK to miss the playoffs this year, we will be better for it Yankee fans, trust me…and one request, if anyone knows Buster Olney, tell him to stop referring to the last night of the Yankee Dynasty and his book....he writes as if the 4 championships didn't happen and we blew a World Series that quite frankly we were lucky to have gotten into a 7th game....why is it such a joy to talk of the last night, what about all of the championships we did win...can we please be able to rest and not have to hear about how we haven't won the WS in 7 years, I mean so what… we won 4, can we savor that please, has anyone won 4 in 5 years in the past 40 years?
Keep on dreaming Phil. This Yankee team has as much business in the playoffs this year as I do.
Even as a Yankee fan myself, I cannot say I would want to see something as pathetic as this year's Yankees in the playoffs.
They don't deserve to be anywhere other than the cellar, just to embarrass each and every single one of these pinstriped knuckleheads.
And if any of you still think that this team will somehow pull it together and win it this year, then you are just asking for me to come back here and berate you when they are 18 games back in August.
Boy, I bet you guys prefer to hear from the Nudge now after some of those keyboard sack dances I just read. I certainly didnt hear any humor in those blogs. But at least Gil's Nudge post ratio looks better today so I am sure hes happy. But I see his keyboard is still not working.
Too bad for Pettitte today, but i cant say I did not warn you that the offense would disappear when the pitching improved. I think Keith has the right idea.
Oh Phil, if you think the Yankees starting pitching is a strength... well then just let Dorothy click her heels together and repeat "There's no place like first, Theres no place like first"
Phil,
Just to prevent you from wasting keyboard time responding in the typical knee-jerk fashion, I am not a "Red Sux" or "Mutt" fan so put your biases aside and think of something to say that makes some sense.
P.S. I take back the part where I said they'd be embarrassed with a last place finish.
Judging from the looks of these guy's faces and the lack of enthusiasm they show on the field, I highly doubt that even being in the bottom would embarrass them.
They'd probably just take their million dollar checks and laugh all the way to the bank.
Face it, the Yankee front office and all you fans are just suckers for falling for the charade that dollar$ were going to buy you a championship.
Just like everything in life, it's how you spend and not necessarily how much you spend that makes the difference.
The spent the last seven years or so giving away their homegrown talent for overrated superstars and wasting money on still other suspect veterans.
Now, all the bad trades and free agent signings are coming back to haunt them.
The farm is pretty much dried up and loads of cash are tied up in the walking stiffs like Giambi, Pavano, Farnsworth, Damon, Igawa, Matsui, Myers, .
And this is not even including the other dreck like Wright, Brown, Randy ohnson, Sheffield, Villone, Karsay, etc. that have since go elsewhere.
God, it's depressing and anger-inducing all at the same time.
Eric,
Dont sugarcoat it so much, give it to us straight!
Oh and one last thing...
That comatosed victim they call a manager should have been fired two years ago!!
Jim A., Kat, Anthony R., Diane, Nudge, Lucy et al ...,
Well, I just got back from The Field of Dreams at Dyersville, Iowa. A long, long ride there and back from St. Louis ... Some weekend!
When I write and publish this story I must say it will be one of my favorite journalism articles ever ... one of the most amazing experiences of my life ...
All the places I have seen and photographed and written about ... The Killing Fields, Ambergris Caye, La Antigua in Guatemala, Lago Atitlan, Angkor Wat, Mt. Ararat, Tikal, Luang Prabang, Ko Pha Ngan, Baalbeck, Wadi Rum, Petra, re-tracing Lawrence of Arabia's WWI trek, Mt. Everest Base Camp ... nothing, and I mean nothing, can compare to this magical place.
I bought a signed ball for Jim A.'s six year old ... signed by the man who owns half of the corn field and the house at the Field of Dreams ... I suppose I will have to find a way to deliver it.
Also I got the story on the split ownership of the field, what happened to the corn, famous people who've been there ...
There was another farmer who wanted basically to make left field a farm again ... there was a major problem with that ... so he fixed it back ... now there is another stand hawking this and that near left field but no one I saw would go near it ... bad blood or bad karma ... maybe it was closed? I believe that other owner sold his part to a corporation ... I will sort all the details out later ...
The bleachers were just perfect. And the lights too ... all just like in the movie! Driving up I was spell bound ... excited like a little kid on the night before Christmas ... (Again, only when I got to Mt. Ararat, or to Denmark or the British Army Jungle Warfare training in Central America or filming the elephants and lions at Chobe in Botswana had I been more in awe and/or more filled with wonder. It was like walking on the moon, or what I would imagine that to be. I mean, even Bob Feller has been there to pitch on that mound! Bob Feller!)
Kevin Costner got bored during filming and cut in "Annie Loves Ray" on top of one of the seats ...
A great group showed up right after the Faith Hill look-a-like and I played catch on the field ... there were more than a few Little League kids, (Timmy, Humberto, Diego and a few others, all very good ballplayers there with their dads) a couple from the University of Oregon, another couple from St. Louis (a lawyer) with a gorgeous little 18 month old blonde baby ... Abagail ... with these big blue eyes, then another couple with a baby named Macy ... just so cute ... walking around here and there ... then Ashley, a professional woman's softball player ... a switch-hitter who just flat out roped. She had on a T-shirt that read, "I play like I pray." She was like this uber-Christian.
We all hit and pitched and shagged (fly balls, yes of course!) ... Faith Hill (or someone who looks a lot like her) was doing cartwheels (literally) in the outfield and chatting everybody up, filming and cheering everyone on ...
Someone hit a homer into the corn on his birthday no less (Derek, who hit .340 for his high school team that went to State in Colorado) ... then he pitched and get this ... knocked down his own wife FOUR times. Then he threw at my head four times ... on two of those pitches I hit singles to right field ... there were a lot of people waiting to hit and pitch so you basically swung at anything. Even A. Soriano of the Cubs was like "Guys be more selective!"
This kid Derek (U of Oregon) also has a wicked knuckleball ... just a great guy! Everyone was so friendly ... smiling and open and kind ... as if we had all been drawn there
... like to the "Free Zone" in The Stand.
Just an amazing, amazing experience ... I would walk back there to see it and experience it all over again ... It was perfect.
At the end it started to rain and we all headed for our SUV's ... rained out ... I hadn't had so much fun in a long, long time ... it was like being in heaven. Really.
I stood in center field and I thought, "This is what heaven will be like ... everyone kind and happy, helping one another, not keeping score ..."
I saw everything that's great about America ... everything that was worth the blood of those who came before us! Everything worth living for TODAY.
Did I mention it was amazing?
ACL,
Great post and story. You cant beat the heartland for bringing a person down to the basics of what life is all about. Not just baseball but the people and all. I will be sure to make that same trip one day in the future.
Based on the last couple of weeks, guess we can't call the cleanup hitter May-Rod anymore.
Maybe the A really stands for April.
Thank you Nudge, that meant a great deal, coming from you.
I will be most interested in the posts of the others ...
University's out, I've just been to the Field of Dreams, the house is almost totally rebuilt and there's nothing to do in Ladue but to ... start writing again!
I will check the posts later ... I am a bit down about the Yankees but after the Field of Dreams, I think this year the minor leagues (Memphis AAA) and perhaps the local the non professional leagues will catch more of my attention.
Not long ago, the USA Today ran a column by a Red Sox fan (VERY WELL WRITTEN!) about how he takes his kids to the AAA games nearby because Fenway Park is too expensive now. It was happy and sad all at once ...
When I graduated from Arizona State I covered Major League Spring Training ... I sat in the dugout, played catch on the field, talked with the players in the clubhouse (Cubs, Bruce Hurst, Jamie Moyer) and if you can't really interact, and you sit far away ... I'd rather not be at a stadium. I guess I got spoiled.
And that's what makes the Field of Dreams so special ... it is everyone's dream ... collective yet individual ... it would be intresting to see the psychological motivations of everywhere there together ... we all just instinctively allowed each other to have what they came there for. Men and women helped the kids, people shared equipment and brand new balls.
People bonded, like when we hiked the Volcan Pecaya in Guatemala on Christmas Day in 2004. Israeli soldiers, German music producers, these Dutch girls, a few gals from Italy and Spain ... you just can't imagine the esprit de corps. We were together for ONE DAY and we all still keep in touch.
Faith Hill brought a special ball with a gizmo to show how hard you could throw (but no one cared to check.) People in the stands cheered on the Little League kids when they got hits or just hit the ball well. No one got on base or cared to run the bases ... mainly I think they were looking for what rests beyond the corn ... in theirs souls I mean ...
BTW, the F of D is F R E E.
Can you imagine?
I need to find a way to get that signed ball to Jim A's son.
Bless you all ...
Ant
Batista suspects tipping and accused Yankees of Cheating
http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070513&content_id=1962696&vkey=news_sea&fext=.jsp&c_id=sea
Advice to Batista, Stfu Scrub . Yankees hitters made an adjustment, you calling them cheaters by tipping your pitches
whatever happened to jim beauchamp? is he still employed by newsday?
Anthony,
Great post and I'm very happy you had such a good visit to the F of D. I'm very surprised people are allowed to play on the field, I thought you would just be able to be marched through on some type of tour or something. I am glad to hear that greedy people haven't totally sucked the life out of it.
You should have gone after the kid who threw at your head, no way Shoeless Joe would have let that go without a fight.
Is the house they used in the movie still there? It's probably a concession stand or something.
I really appreciate you thinking of my son and getting a ball, you certainly did not have to do that. If we need to get in touch, maybe we can use Kat as a middle woman, we can send her our email addresses and she can relay them for us.
Kat- Do you mind doing this for us?
Sounds like a great trip, makes me want to run home and slap the DVD in right now!
I'm a little too disgusted by the Yanks play of late to really say anything about them. I'll just say that the hitting should come back pretty soon but the road ahead does not look good.
Other teams fear the Red Sox
This season, the Red Sox are intimidating other teams. Either stifling them with their pitching, or mashing them with their bat. Look what happened to the Orioles today.
The Yankees used to be like that. I remember a game when the Yankees in the late 90s beat the living tar out of the Sox 24-1 or something like that in Fenway, and the Sox never recovered if I remember correctly.
Not anymore. And today's game was clear evidence of that.
The Red Sox are going to have a great year, because they have great starting pitching and a good bullpen. They aren't going into any prolonged slumps. I knew as soon as I heard they were losing 2-0 they'd come back and beat the O's. They beat up on the bad teams. We should have done that this weekend. This team is in trouble right now, and they'd better get it turned around very quickly, or this season is going to be out of control in a hurry. imo
Flashing Lights-
I found Jim Beauchamp for you,
I think he's retired and living in Oklahoma since his release from the Mets in 1974.
I don't think he was ever employed by Newsday.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/beaucji01.shtml
Better turn on your flashing lights and keep looking...
Nyyguy- The injury bug may bite Boston yet so don't crown them right away.
As predicted by yours truly, Josh Beckett has skin/blister issues with his finger that will likely hamper him every few starts.
Keep in mind Boston is as old as the Yankees and they will not escape injuries, the best luck they can have is that they don't seem to come all at once as they did in April for the Yanks. The Red Sox know all about this as it happened to them last year and killed what was actually a decent team.
with pivotal series with CWS, mets, sox, and LAA, what does this yankee team need to turn the corner? sit a few guys to rest /heal /watch game? throw some young blood in the mix? question of the day -how do you fix inconsistency?
Jim A,
Didnt Beauchamp play for the Expos for a bit. I seem to remember the stadium announcer enjoying his name since even though its pronounced beech-um, they went the French Canadian way and introduced him as Bo-cham.
ACL,
The whole field of dreams story really ties a lot of americana together with the common thread of baseball. Today we think of baseball in the big cities, NY, Boston, LA and cant concieve or feel any sympathy for teams that struggle in the small markets. But baseball was a rural sport initially. Not a big city enterprise. The barnstorming leagues were where to sport began to work its way into the fiber of our society.
Thats why you see the country boy comes tothe big city theme alot in the early days. My dad was quite a ballplayer and was offered a contract to play for Connie Mack and the Philadelphia A's in the 20's. Baseball had quite a different reputation back then. The players were rough and tumble guys, many of ill-repute. They were more nomads. I remember my dad saying he turned down the offer for two reasons, first the money in baseball was not very good nor dependable, but mostly he didnt want his parents to be embarrassed by having a ball player in the family.
Things have sure changed from the days when people in those small town would wait for those rough and tumble players to come through town and the whole town come out to watch them play a few games before they moved on to the next city. More of a carnival than professional sport.
I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All Good Things comes to an end lyrics by Nelly Furtado.
This song dedicated for Death Yankees Empire. It's Over
Honestly what will become of me
don't like reality
It's way too clear to me
But really life is daily
We are what we don't see
Missed everything daydreaming
[Chorus]
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to end?
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to an end?
Traveling I only stop at exits
Wondering if I'll stay
Young and restless
Living this way I stress less
I want to pull away when the dream dies
The pain sets in and I don't cry
I only feel gravity and I wonder why
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
[ All Good Things lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ]
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to end?
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to an end?
Well the dogs were whistling a new tune
Barking at the new moon
Hoping it would come soon so that they could
Dogs were whistling a new tune
Barking at the new moon
Hoping it would come soon so that they could
Die die die die die
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
Flames to dust
Lovers to friends
Why do all good things come to an end
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to end?
come to an end come to an
Why do all good things come to an end?
Well the dogs were barking at a new moon
Whistling a new tune
Hoping it would come soon
And the sun was wondering if it should stay away for a day til the feeling went away
And the sky was falling on the clouds were dropping and
the rain forgot how to bring salvation
the dogs were barking at the new moon
Whistling a new tune
Hoping it would come soon so that they could die.
What can you say! If you can't hit lefies and 2 out of the 3 games with Seattle were against lefties than we'll lose. Look for teams to reach down into the minors for lefty starters against the Yanks. Boy, Cano, Abreu and Giambi are killing us. We should have walked away with at least 2 of 3. Joe's allegiance to Cano and especially Abreu who has squandered many runners in scoring positions is frustrating.
Robinson Cano 2006: .342 hitter
Robinson Cano 2007: .230 hitter.
What a joke he is.
Gotta love Bobby "afraid of the wall" Abreu.
A-Fraud sure has cooled down, LOL, then he'll sign with the Angels after the season and you'll be left with no 3B.
Demise of the Yankees. You gotta love it. How I hate them and their fans.
The Yanks are not dead, it is like the Final M*A*S*H episode ... all Hawkeye Pierce went through would eventually make him an even better doctor ... by this I mean to understand the fear of his patients ... he was too arrogant and cocky before, yes?
We right now are living off the past ... be it all the rings or the 96 - 00 dynasty.
Now the Yanks will/should rebuild, and get back that spirit of the 1995 Playoff loss to Seattle ... that's where the great teams of 96 through 2000 were born.
In that loss, Griffey Jr. sliding across the plate.
That true, tangible sense of disappointment like, "Let's get back on the field right now/fight in the parking lot" kind of esprit de corps. The Yankees lost that long, long ago. (To Angels in playoffs.)
It went from "We're the Yankees and we are the best team so we will win no matter what" to "We're the Yankees and since we're the Yankees we probably should win."
Look at our military in Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia and by proxy in Lebanon ... look at Serbia ... we have the tools and the men and the money and we can't beat a bunch of rag tag, half-assed mountain boys ... why?
(Beckett just blew the confidence away with the Marlins, Shilling and RJ with the Diamondbacks as well.)
When Mo made that error in 2001 it was over. Sorry that was it ... no more invincible.
The Marlins in 2003 might have swept the Yanks in the WS if A.J. Burnett had been well ...
Division titles and playoff wins vs. Texas are nice ... we have to win the WS for 200 million ...
So ... here we are ...
What to do?
Keep bringing up the kids (DeSalvo, Hughes, Phelps types)
Unload the big contracts, but keep A-Rod.
Sign real US college and high school talent. (Paulie, Chuck, Tino archetypes) Players we can see. Players we can relate to. Clean cut men with NO EARRINGS Please. That was one thing that caught me about the Field of Dreams. NOT ONE MAN there had on an earring. There's a reason for that.
Fire the Japan scouts ... they are brutal and must spend their time and money on "En-Joe-Kosi"
Get rid of all the dead wood (we all know who, sorry to say)
And then we can start to re-energize the franchise.
The Yankees right now are a microcosm of all that is wrong with the U.S. economy, both in the macro and the micro. They are one big NHL all in one ... by this I would articulate unaffordable prices, players from countries no one heard about, from strange cultures we can't relate to or don't care to relate to as fans -- as nice as they may be -- I speak Spanish and Korean but how many other fans do? Do we have proper role models? Yes, Posada is great! I have students from Japan so I am interested in the culture, but again, how many fans really care about Japan? Is U.S. home grown talent being neglected? Why don't we have a Josh Hamilton? Where's Ben Sheets? What's the agenda? There is one for sure. The Mets sure have one and the Cardinals sure have one, and that's fine. But at least they HAVE AN INDENTITY. Then there is the out of control players union, owner(s) throwing good money after bad, not playing hungry, on and on ad infinitum.
Final thought. I recently went to the Memphis Zoo. I saw the Pandas.
I said, "I am bear!" (I do this at times for no apparent reason. At least in this case there WAS a reason.)
The Pandas just sat there eating bamboo.
A kid said, "Hey he's eating bamboo and making a mess, he has no manners."
Another said, "No, he does have manners. He has Panda manners."
This was a great insight to me ...
The 96 - 00 Yankees teams had an identity. They ate up other teams. (Like bamboo.) Also Pandas wear similar uniforms to the Yankees ... same colors at least.
Our team right now has ... in spite of everything ...
has no identity (Yes we have the NY logo and the uniforms but 3/4 of this team could not play for the 00 - 96 Yanks and we all know this) and thus no Panda manners ...
Are we a veteran team ready to win?
Rebuilding?
Youth movement?
A good mix?
Are we moving in the right direction?
Why do players who leave us wind up in the All Star Game? Westbrook, Lilly.
I looked at a Panda eating up bamboo and I just thought, "This is what a Panda does."
I look at the Yankees and I think, "This team is supposed to win, win, win."
And we are NOT winnning.
I feel like we are trapped in 1987 - 1992 mode with the Yankees right now ...
We need to right the ship and fast ... a new skipper might help but George, the GM and (Girardi) all need to be on the same page.
Hi Jim A.,
Yes, Kat could be a middle person. Work out the details so I can mail you the signed ball ... I would have gotten more stuff but it started raining and we all exhausted ... running around the field, throwing, hitting, pitching, taking photos and using the mini DVD camera.
No, the guy who threw at me and his wife, he just had no control. It was kind of funny ... he was not throwing hard ... having been through Africa, mercenaries, Killing Fields, Lebanon ... I truly value peace now ...
Yes the house is there and the owner lives in it ...
You must go and see it. I want to go back but it's like Mt. Ararat, you don't go twice ... Maybe ...
I would like to take more photographs and video in the early am or pm but the field closes at 6 pm ... and about 3,000 per day come at the peak season. We were so lucky. When we go there is was just the Faith Hill look a like and myself ... then about 50 people poured in ... it was perfect though ... what a mix.
You have to take your son there ... it was amazing.
Nudge,
The Lindenhurst Village Museum has a display with Babe Ruth playing in the town ... I interviewed a man who was at the game the Babe played in Lindy ... he said the wind was blowing in and Babe hit a homerun but stopped at third for a triple, not wanted to show up the local team ... then because it was prohibition they all went and got drunk at Barnacle Bills ...
You can take the LIRR to Lindenhurst and walk down Wellwood Ave. to the museum ... if you care to.
A few lighter moments at the Field of Dreams ...
Faith Hill II said, "Hey, maybe Doc Brown will show up!"
Doc Brown was from Back to the Future. Moonlight (Dr.) Graham was in Field of Dreams.
When we first got on the field I said, "Wow, I can't believe I'm actually at The Killing Fields."
Cambodia = Killing Fields
Dyersville, Iowa = Field of Dreams
Baby Abagail had these huge cheeks and she looked like she had little sandwiches in them. I said, "Do you want a BLT? Hold the Mayo!"
Then I added, "Hey, you got the wrong kind of salami again!"
One of my students told me this semester that "Babies are God's evidence that the world should go on." The Field of Dreams without babies and kids there just wouldn't seem right.
Faith Hill II was told no smoking in the outfield. I pictured her catching a flyball with a mitt in one hand and a Marlboro Light in the other. She could have also burned down the cornfield. So instead she did cartwheels (literally) in center field, which didn't really seem that out of place.
Yeah, the Yankees are done and the Red Sox are winning it all. Since we're all so perceptive, MLB should cancel the rest of the season and just crown Boston the champs.
Because how could a team loaded with all-stars EVER bounce back from an early slump?
You "Johnny Come Lately's" can go ahead and give up on the Yankees. You will not be missed once you leave this Blog. The Yanks SP is very good, and these guys have and will hit. Motivation\Torre is a problem, but I believe once Clemens is closer physically to joining the "Big Club", firing Torre will be the next step to getting this team playing to it's maximum potential.
ACL,
Thanks for the Lindenhurst tip. I actually work a block from Wellwood so I will make a point to check that out.
As for the team assessment I think you are on the money. The problem they have though is that the same guys that created this mess are th ones that you are dependant on straightening it out. It all starts at the top. The Yankees actually have a whole camp and organization set up over in Japan designed to sell the Yankee name to the up and coming players there. Many teams do this also in Japan as well as in the DR and other baseball producing countries. Still if the GM cant value the players correctly, all the grassroots support is useless. As you can see where I am pointing (this will make Hitch happy) is right at Cashman as the first man that needs to go.
Six [out of many] reasons to watch:
1. Captain Clutch, never out of the game
2. Jorge Posada, on fire
3. 'Pinstripe Diaper' brigade, glimpses of the future
4. Joe Torre [people who think he is expressionless are people who cannot read any expression of thought or feeling more subtle than a Pinella dirt-kicking session]
5. DM, who has a whole other relationship to dirt
6. And the tried and true "My team, winning or losing" ...
See you at the game, NYY fans.
The rest will not be missed.
Roy,
For future use of the term, "Johnny Come Lately" is a term that refers to someone who supports an idea after the idea has been proven. They then jump on board as if they supported that idea all along. So if throwing in the towel is the Johnny Come Lately idea then I guess you were on the front edge of throwing it in.
Im sure you meant something else but im not sure just what.
Diane,
Number six should always be 1-6.
The Yankee season is far from over. The pitching has returned and will be consistent as we suspected during the winter. The bats will come back. There is no question of this facet of the game. A team which is 81 and 81 is still in the race. Now do you expect the Yankees not to be better than .500 club. Do you suspect that the Red Sox will continue to have the ball bounce there way through out the season or not come up with injuries to their pitching staff. Yes, we are 17-19 with about 12 starts from rookie pitchers. Do we need to reinvent the wheel? Joe will make some changes if players coninue to fail when called upon. Others will get the call and produce. The Red Sox's are happy now but every team hits a wall a few times during the season which makes for an interesting end of year. I predicted 101-61. We can do 2 out 3 with no issue and disappoint the boys from bean town.
Larry,
I never say never, but this team does not have the horses to go 84-42 for the rest of the season. The easiest part of their schedule is past. Only KC remains as a shoo-in opponent. Also you seem to think that the Yankees are the only team that had injuries. All teams are dealing with injuries including Toronto, Red Sox, Mets, Tampa etc etc. The only lon term injury your team has had was to Pavano. So stop the injury excuse. Other teams have lost players for the season or for the current duration. Injuries are not your problem. Poor performance by current players and lack of depth is your problem.
Roy,
Like the USSR, the Yankees can have perestroika ... this is the Russian word for "restructuring." And we can still root for them ... while accepting change is needed.
It's like a relationship. When there is no room for growth you stagnate. (NHL of the 1970's vs Soviet Red Army Team vs. 1980 Miracle at Lake Placid.)
The Yanks will grow and be great again ... we may need some major surgery, not just this year but over the next few years ... We have not won or been hungry to win in Y E A R S. That must change.
We need a new core, a new bench, younger pitching (that is nearer than I feared.) We need a plan. We need at least some U.S. born players for the continuity of our history, dynasty and culture. We may need a new brain trust.
This isn't the Soviet Union or North Korea or Uganda under Idi Amin. Dissent and constructive criticism are NOT treason, okay? We all love the team. Maybe not as much as you, but I have been rooting for the Yanks all my life and always will.
The Blog is for all normal people who like baseball and the Yanks and even the Red Sox. No one has the right to tell anyone how to feel, what to think, nor to attack anyone else.
Good, spirited debate and different points of view (like yours, Roy) make things more interesting. We may not always agree. Agreeing to disagree is an important part of life.
As Churchill said, "Better to jaw, jaw, jaw than war, war, war."
I send you my best today Roy, I always enjoy reading your posts.
Nudge: Smart man to never say never but the math works and the calibre of player has not changed. I expected Melky to be an issue but not Abreu, Cano and Giambi. 36 games into the season should not be the time to throw up the white flag but a point to make some changes in the linup and bullpen. Example: Meyers out, Villone in. Start using more righty bats against lefty pitching. Sitting Abreu and sometimes Giambi when not hitting well.
The Red Sox's have their starting 5 as expected from ST. If any 1 or more of their top 3 hit the DL.It will tough for them to play 5 ball. They are getting alot out of their lineup. I would say more than expected. The record may not be achieved but my belief is the Yankee team will get it together and be their at the end.
Red Sox are down 1 starter from the beginning of the season
The caliber of player is not good. You have no 1-2 hitters and nothing at the bottom. .250 hitters through your lineup doesnt yield much. And yes the caliber has dropped off. Damon Abreu and Giambi are all on the down side of their careers.
Add to that the lynchpin in the offense so far is a 35 year old catchers who has no backup to spell him and the small house of cards you have erected is ready to come down.
Pitching is worse. Mussina and Wang will be inconsistent all year. Pettitte is a good #3 starter. The y young guys so far are OK but they have yet to face the tough competition. I cant say if they will rise to that occassion or fall. But neither can you. Who is going to win all those games? Thats 17 wins per starter for the duration of the season. I can say the Yanks will end up 143-19, the math works but there is no logic to it.
Bull pen is still bad and the defense is atrocious. Those are carryovers from last season and one year older has made it worse.
Like all the other Red sox losers who post here, I've only liked and followed the Red Sox since 2004, their first memorable since in over 8 decades.
who is sox down a starter? clement? thought he was to miss most of year anyway? toronto is very plagued with injuries, as well as anahiem, oakland and mets. but red sox? beckett went down last night with a nasty cut, and manny tweaked his hammy last night as well. i cant think of any other nagging injuries i've read about. just saying....yanks had mussina, wang, matsui and hughes on 15 day DL with hammys, giambi (foot) damon (from waist down). yanks have had some key injuries, as toronto and LAA are experiencing as well. but i'll admit, poor performance by many and overall inconsistency is to blame. everyone deals with injuries. some teams, however, (i.e. boston) have not been affected.
Red Sox have 3 pitchers on the DL 2 MLers(Timlin, Clement), 1 prospect9Lester).
Yankees have 4 pitchers on DL 2 MLers(Pavano,Sanchez), 1 prospect (Hughes).
After getting Troy Glaus back Toronto is now down to 8 men on the DL.
Tampa 3 on DL
Baltimore now the Hernandez is back is down to 4 players on DL
White Sox 3 players
Cleveland 2 players
Detroit 6 players
KC 9 Players
LA 7 players
Minn 5 players
Oakland 6 players
Seattle 5 players
Texas 5 players
So please stop breaking my heart about Yankee injuries since they have had less than the average team. No Narcicism allowed here.
Miguel
Missing the season due to injury is down a starter isnt it? Unless the league allow you to skip every fifth day because you declare it before the season starts. The team still has to replace that player on the active roster.
Johnny Come Lately's" = "Anyone who joins anything, or any movement, after it's inception and or implementation. Many of us have been posting on this Blog for a long time. The posters currently giving the Yankees "the last rites", initially began posting after the current season started. Hence, they qualify as "Johnny Come Lately's".
It looks like we can be excited about the 2007 season, like we were about 2004. Two years in our entire Baseball history to feel good about. Not bad !
Roy,
I was the second post ever on this blog. Your the Johnny Come Lately.
Nudge, If I can't predict the Yanks will rise than you can't say they will fall but to continue with Wang and Mussina will be inconsistent with Pettite no better than #3 is an issue slanted to your side of the conversation. One of us will be correct in our assumptions. We shall see.
Schilling will not continue to pitch at this level all season and Dice K will be more hittable as the season wears on and knowledge of his game become evident. See, it works for me. The game is played betwen the lines and my thoughts the Yankees have much more cream in their mix than the Red Sox. Thus they will rise and as history repeats itself over take the boys from Bean Town.
Obviously you felt the term, "Johnny Come Lately" applied to you. I hope the shoes are most uncomfortable.
Larry M.
The Yanks have "ripped" both Schill and Dice K. Our SP is getting better every game, and you know we will hit. Better days ahead.
Roy; I know that we can hit but Cano and Abreu appear to be in prolonged slumps. They are not having good swings at all. Abreu was absolutely over matched against the lefty 3 90or 91 mph fastballs not even getting the bat on the ball. This is not top end speed. He needs to be matched against certain pitchers while he's not making good contact. I rather see Melky batting against heavy duty lefties.
So the Yankees will have a bas season and get a good draft pick and the Haters will still have something to say. I am suprised at the talent the Mets bring up. makes you think what the hell the scouts is doing
To All negative Yankee fans. What the heck are you thinking? I have read some of the dumbest messages from all people Yankees fans. Ripping the rotation. Saying the offense is terrible. Ripping Torre. I know its NOT 1998. But can you understand that its freaking May. Not September. Baseball is a game of failure. You are not going to hit consitantly. Their pitching was hurt. Wang, Mussina, Hughes have all been on the DL. Now Wang and Mussina are back. Let's give this a good month of playing ball. Do your really think that Abreu, Giambi, Cano are going to hit like they are doing now? They will make the playoffs. The division race is not over in May. If they make the Wild Card they are still in the playoffs. If you heard about the off days in the playoffs then you will only have to pitch three starters with all the off days. But that's a story for another day. Relax stop feeding into the negativity that Red Sox and Met fans love. All the Yankee haters are loving this. Stop being reactionary and take a deep breath and remember its MAY 15TH!!!
