Well, the Yankees are finally back from the trip from hell. It was quite a shocking development, given how well they had been playing prior to the road trip. Now people are wondering if they will be sellers at the trade deadline, not buyers. It's hard to imagine that happening with the Yankees, but you never know.
GM Brian Cashman continues to say he won't mortgage the future for immediate help, such as trading Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy or Joba Chamberlain in a deal for Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira. He might make a smaller deal, such as one for Shea Hillenbrand of the Angels or a reliever or backup catcher, but no blockbusters are anticipated.
In some ways, that makes sense, as this team really hasn't shown that it is just one piece away from being a World Series contender. And as good as Teixeira has been to date in his four-year career, Bobby Abreu had every bit that track record but isn't performing well, so who's to say what Teixeira could add?
It's a sad state for the Yankees, as you can see in their faces and hear in their words when talking about the way things are going.

Abreu has every bit the track record Teixeira has?
A 27 yr old switchhitting 1B gamer compared to a fainthearted imposter.
A 6 yr difference in age.Abreu' best RBI season was 2001 w/ 110 Tex has done that in his last 3 yrs.
Tex before he got hurt:
61 games
.302 AVE
12 HR
41 RBI
18 2B
.405 OBP
.554 SLG
Abreu' numbers don't come close.
Yes, there are differences in the two hitters, clearly. But in terms of this season, the Yankees had every reason to think Abreu would contribute at a high level. He has a longer track record of performing well and with great consistency than Teixeira. Teixeira has more power, but Abreu has been a .300 hitter throughout his career. Long-term, of course I would take Teixeira. That was meant as an illustration that even someone with a long history of good performances can underachieve. Teixeira, with a shorter track record, could as well, though I'm not saying he would.
KAT
I'm sure Cashman had preliminary discussions with Texas regarding Tex.Texas now has to see what teams make the best offers and if willing NY can counter or up the anty a bit.Like I said teams are not going to give up great prospects for what amounts to a 1 year rental. All the +.500 ball clubs have good 1B and is doubtful any would make a trade for Tex.Dodgers moved Nomar to 3RD and plugged Loney in at 1B.
I strongly want the Yanks to land Tex.Having him bat ahead of AROD would be fun to watch.Tex crushes lefty pitching.
KATWOMAN-
I diasgree with your assertion that the Yanks haven't proven they are "just 1 piece away from being a World Series contender". When Abreu was hitting, this team was winning "big time". The opposition has something to do with that, but the Yanks did also defeat the R\Sox 4 times in 6 games, when he was hitting. This team's problem is offense. The starting pitching has been good, and the bullpen is good enough to contend. The Yanks need 1 "big" bat to go in the 3 hole. 1 bat can turn an entire batting order around. We saw it when the Yanks acquired Dave Justice. If we can get TEX, and give up only 1 of our quality minor league arms, Cashman should do it. Hughes is now a major leaguer, and "untouchable". 1 of the minor league pitching jewels, Tabata, and a "marginal" minor leaguer for TEX. TEX can catapult the Yanks into the playoffs. If Cashman does get Hillenbrand, Shea can DH and come off the bench to PH, but he will not make a huge impact on the offense. TEX will.
AROY
That's what I'm thinking !
Tex can change a game w/ one swing Abreu cannot.Hillenbrand can provide slightly better power than Abreu and hit .280 if given the chance to play everyday.
RUSE-
It's not just the "1 swing", but the pitches the batters in the order around him will get. TEX certainly can change a game with 1 swing, but it's his "presence" that will turn the batting order around. Cashman needs to stop playing "hard to get". Once TEX is off the DL, he better "pull the trigger".
That is great but where do you bat Abreu? 9th? He would be the most overrated and overpaid 9th place hitter in the league. Is there any way to trade Abreu? I am sure that we can convince a smaller market team that Abreu can play for them because he obviously can not handle the pressure of a major market team. Now I realize why Philly hated him so much. No Heart! Hey Bobby how about you try to slide and catch that ball last night? What a wuss. ! A wuss with no heart. That will help you win!
MIKE
It's fun to talk trades no ?
I say if a trade for Tex happens then it makes Abreu expendable. The Yanks could trade him w/a package of prospects to Texas provided they eat a large portion of his contract. If Damon's legs are OK then Cabrera moves to RF for the time being.
I'm only speculating !
The one thing to consider with acquiring Tex is can he perform in New York. There have been too many players with track records that can't take the glare of being a Yankee. I don't know that there is any way to know this for sure, but maybe these psychological factors can be measured somehow. Maybe I'm just talking out of my arse, though.
I am sorry but I have to vent about Abreu. I can not watch this guy anymore. Every time he comes to bat I change the channel because I know he is going to take a weak hack at the ball and ground out to short. He won't even ground out to 2nd because he can't pull the ball. I never use the word hate because I think it is such a strong word, so I will tell you that I dislike this man with every bone in my body. Using the word "man" to describe him giving him to much credit. This "whatever you want to call him" is the biggest wuss I have ever seen on a baseball field and he has the heart of a fly.
Hey Bobby how about you show me some emotion out there. Let me know that you are upset that you stink and the team is losing. Being a New York fan I want to the see a player play with his heart on his sleeve. Please get someone who would play their heart out (Like everybody on this board would) to win. I don't think I am asking for much. Just play as hard as the fans would because you want to win as much as the fans do. Am I asking too much? Ok I am done ranting now. Please somebody tell me that you agree.
Ruse,
Anyway to get rid of Areu I am up for as you can tell from my previous post. LOL
I am sorry to say this but poor Abreu is something Tex would use as a tissue ...
He is not the player he was in Philly. He's not 1/5th the player, honestly.
Who knows what happened? He seems to be a decent person.
Yet again, why not get Josh Hamilton for peanuts rather than this 16 million dollar man. I want someone who will walk through a landmine field, walk through Lebanon, walk through Cambodia, walk through a lion's den and run through a brick wall.
Especially for 16 million.
Not someone who is afraid of a wall with pads on it.
I know Kat is trying to make nice and she's being polite ... but this is just horrible.
There is no comparison with Tex and Bobby A.
The team is a 200 million dollar no heart disgrace.
It's hard to watch.
Good thing Cashman is holding on to the kids ... we will need them.
Now trade off the dead wood, eat the contracts, forget this year. Try to get every good U.S. high school and college player you can ...
Then rebuild with a new core of position players like the Brewers, Astros and Colorado have done.
Hunter Pence
J.J. Hardy
Holiday
Sheets
Fuentes
And we can be in the playoffs next year.
BTW I saw Beckett beat Peavy at San Diego. Maybe it is the Red Sox year? But I think the Angels will win it all.
Hello All,
The Yanks have proven this month that they are nowhere near contention. This season is pretty much over. That said, if Cashman can get Texiera, then the Yanks are instant contenders again next year. We can work in the off-season on better pitching and an upgrade in the OF (Hunter or Jones). If that happens the Yanks will win a few more rings before Jeter/A-Rod retire.
Mike: You should have watched last night. Abreu grounded out to first 3 times.
I agree with Cashman on a big fix turning this team around. If the likes of Jeter,Damon, Matsui, Arod, Abreu and Posada need another bat in the lineup to make the hits more timely. I have to take issue with that. Their resumes have hitting all over them. The SP has come around the problem is twofold. The bullpen cannot be trusted except for Mariano and the hitting is not timely for the most part with Matsui and Abreu have weaker years against lefties.
I'd take Tex. but as Cashman indicates not at the expense of the future core.
Ant,
What on earth makes you think that really young players will put the Yakns over the top NEXT year?!?!! 2 of the teams you mentioned are second to last in their divisions - Houston & Colorado, yeah just what I want my beloved Yankees to do emulate the friggin ROCKIES!!!
Sean (philly): Do you think Robinson Cano is a better hitter than he is showing now?
SportsNation Keith Law: (3:16 PM ET ) I think this is what happens to hitters with no concept of the strike zone. You get massive volatility in their performances. They should really look at upgrading 2b for this year if they want to make a playoff run.
There's you go Keith Law says Cano's is overrated, Yankees need a new 2nd
LARRY
I f I understand your post correctly you seemto be suggesting the Yankee SP has rebounded.I don't see it that way.I can't remember the last time the Yanks got a lights out performance from a starter.
Outside of AROD no one in the starting lineup has 30 HR potential.I see Matsui w/ maybe 24 and Posada w/ 20 for the season. That's not good enough. If you check the 1998 team that team had 8 players w/ 17 or more HRs w/ 2 more chipping in 10 a piece.
Maybe we should have a ceremony at home plate tonight before the first pitch.
We can set up a Guillotine, turn out the lights at the stadium, pass out candles to the fans, and have Torre walk Abreu, blindfolded, to the guillotine.
Cashman can be standing there and ask "Bunting Bobby" if he has any last words, then put his head on the block and cut it off. We can throw what's left in the Harlem River.
JOHN G.
That's pretty chilling stuff! This ain't the Yankee inquisition!
Ruse,
I didn't mean it. I was being sarcastic (and I'm lousy at doing that) because everyone is "killing" the guy. I apologize if I got you or anyone else upset.
Seriously, I'm pissed off like all of you are. I want this guy to succeed because then the Yanks succeed.
Last year he was a great pickup and we were all happy that we got him. Now, he's the biggest bum to ever put on the pinstripes and we're ready to run him out of town?
He has to start driving the ball to all fields to get out of this funk. he's pulling everything and it ain't workin'.
look at what he did last night. he grounded out to 1st 3 times.
That's why blogs $uck. Something always gets lost in the translation.
It's much better to sit with a group of guys, have some brews and talk baseball.
However, since we all live in different parts of the country, that's pretty near impossible to do.
JOHN
I know you were expressing frustration.Abreu hit .330 for NY down the stretch and some of us thought he'd post great numbers this season.Abreu just seems to be going through the motions. He's the type who tends to sulk when things aren't going his way. He's a seasoned veteran player everyone expected 100 RBI .300 ave 40 2B.
With Abreu it seems all mental. Some have suggested his oblique injury is still bothering him.I don't buy it.
John G.
Harsh?
Sure.
But funny?
Yes.
I too am slightly insane with anger regarding the "Bunty Abreu" so personally, I liked it-and no...I don't think you are SERIOUSLY advocating the beheading of our struggling gutless brokeback mountain hiking right fielder. LOL ;-)
Ruse
2 questions for you....
1. I like all this "Tex talk" but is there any real chance it's even a remotely legit possibility?
The media and those even from this blog whom I'd consider the more knowlegeable-(yourself included) have all been saying for weeks that it's impossible and to "forget about it"
Did something change? Or you just fantasizing to get your mind off how terrible this team of ours has become? LOL
2. I WOULD GO ON FEAR FACTOR AND EAT A BUCKET OF RHINOCEROS TESTICALS IF IT WOULD HELP CASHMAN AQUIRE TORI HUNTER THIS SEASON!!!
NOT NEXT SEASON
THIS ONE!!!
...SOrry so here's the question part.
Can we get him this season? Have you heard about any such efforts that may be going on? I heard he wants to take less money to sign with the Twins which is weird cause it sounded like he wanted the big cash in the ST interviews I read.
WHatever my point is if we hear something like that obviously Cashman could get on the phone and tell his agent we're interested and give him an offer to entice him away from said decision no?
Finally... What do you think of Hunter yourself?
Would you to join me for a plate rhinoceri nuggets for Tori Hunter? LOL
Thanks Michael.
I WAS trying to be funny but, as I said, it's not the same if you can't see the person telling the joke.
However, the Fear Factor thing is OUT!
I hate that show!!
Eating roaches; being put in a coffin with scorpions,
BBBRRRRRR!
Now THAT'S chilling stuff!
Ruse, Ca. yes, I feel the SP has rebounded good enough to win. And yes, the resumes of the guys that I mentioned should be enough to get it done but they are underachievers, presently. We have 3 guys hitting in the top 10 in the AL.
It points to the bullpen and timely hits and or pushing some buttons as opposed to leaving the guys on their own such Cano, Melky or whoever is filling the nine spot. On paper who would you change offensively from past experience.
MICHAEL
I feel the Yanks can make a serious offer for Tex.
Right now teams that have players on the trading block are asking for a lot in return but as we approach the end of July the asking price will go down ,this happens year after year.I'm sure Cashman has made an offer for Tex and it was rejected but that might change when Texas is a little more desperate .
Regarding Hunter no way in hell Minnesota trades him during the season. They will probably be happy w/ the 2 draft choices he will net when he leaves via FA.
LARRY
I've written off Abreu. They have no RH power outside of AROD .Jeter might hit 15 HR.The 3 hitters in the top ten are obviously the most consistent hitters. Then Matsui.Everyone expected much more from Cano ,Damon and Abreu. If they were all hitting .285 Yanks would be in much better shape.
I've never in my life seen so many weak ground balls hit to 1B .
I'm still not sold on Wang being a great pitcher. He's a good # 2 or #3 type. His pitch count was 58 pitches through 6 innings last night and he imploded in the 7th,much the same as he did in San Francisco. He has to pitch better.Pettitte has pitched well enough to lose or break even.Clemens and Mussina are still huge question marks.
so ok,
Lets trade for the guy who is currently on the DL lets trade our farm for him right, He comes here and does not do that well right? he don't like the vibe here and decides not to resign. You are then left with a AROD like situation with worse measures because you traded prospects for a guy who may walk. if you wait til he is a FA then you can offer him that money without losing any heads.
No one is giving away the farm for Tex.No ones losing their heads.
Ruse we should consider this season that should be our thought process and in that process we should trade who we can and bring up some Youth. I don't wanna hear the he is not ready excuse. The time is now lets these kids come up lets see if Joe T can rile them up and who knows maybe they perform so well that a wild card push is possible and that would throw the scouting report to the roof because teams don't have enough info on the kids. Some of you may say well their numbers are not well in the minors? ok, we all know baseball is based on the mental as well. we know that some of the players is AAA is in their high 20's , maybe they are mad because there are bums playing in the bigs in their positions. through all the struggles we have only TWO position players have been called up. The issue is Joe Torre does'nt want to rebuild in possibly his last year(selfish) and Brian Cashman does'nt want to concede defeat what they fail to understand is that even if THIS CURRENT sqaud makes it to the wildcard and is eliminated in one round it is still a failure. By having the youth and IF the youth rallies around torre and put togeteher a solid finish then that opens up the chance for Torre to have the extension he wants. since most of you are dead on supporters of him and he does no wrong so sign him to a extension.
The Yankees deserve what they get, the trading away SHEFFIELD for Abreu, is one of the greatest Yankees jokes eveer!!!
