Yankees-Royals lineup/notes

Here are some notes and the lineup for tonight's game.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre game is being played tonight, but due to rain all day, Phil Hughes will not pitch. It was questionable if they would even get the day in.
Robinson Cano was named the American League co-player of the week last week along with the Devil Rays' B.J. Upton.
Shelley Duncan will be in the lineup tonight to stay with the hot hand. Bobby Abreu also has terrible numbers against lefty Odalis Perez, so he'll be on the bench. Duncan's dad, Dave, the Cardinals' pitching coach; his mom, Jeanine; and his brother, Chris, a Cardinals outfielder, are all coming to watch the game tonight. The Cardinals are off, which is good timing.
Scott Proctor will miss today and tomorrow's game. His wife had a baby boy, Cooper, today.
Tony Pena's a proud papa. His son, Tony Pena Jr., is in the Royals' starting lineup as the shortstop. Pena's never seen his son play a major league game in person before.

Is it me or are you Yankee fans wound so tight that you cant even talk civilly to each other. The level of disrespect many of you are showing each other simply because someone has a different viewpoint is astounding. I expect the hatred and emotion to come my way but what you say and post to each other is shameful at best.

Would you disagree with a member of your family in the same manner? Would you call your mother the names you call others because they think your opinion is wrong? If you disagree with your boss on something, do you handle your difference of opinion the same way you do on this blog?

Probably not! You can make point without making war. Be adults, have a sense of humor, especially about yourself and dont take offense if someone asks you to explain your point. Even if they seem a bit rude in doing so. Be the bigger person and live to blog another day.

Hey Casual,

Haven't heard much from you lately but I just was looking at what Renteria is doing down there in Atlanta. Bet you'd love to have his .335 average at short now instead of Lugo!

Good luck to Lester. Hope he stays healthy and comes back to be his old self.

Shelly Duncan is not in the line-up - Eric Duncan is- a very quiet call-up today. Single and run scored first at bat.....

Geno, so Duncan (Shelley) family drove from St L to KC for nothing? Wow this was big news ... how did you find out?

Hmmmm ...

Well, this was a strange Blog day, with me agreeing with Diane for once, Nudge getting an entry in the dictionary ... amongst other abuses ...

And I thought of something ... today about the trade deadline ... you see, we have this raccoon in the backyard who comes up to the door for food. Faith Hill II (more of an Angie Everhart I'd say, she prefers Julia Roberts) gives Rocky (the raccoon) pizza crusts ... (Raccoons kill snakes BTW) and it is the strangest thing.

We have two squirrels with babies, Stanley and Beatrix, and they have been seen raiding our tomatoes in the garden and just carrying them off ...

I meantion this cause it made me think that the Yankees should and could, with all their money, do a better job of raiding the loser teams ...

Time is running out for Cashman ... though he handled Wil's departure in a nice way. And Wil wished Molina luck, showing the great person he is!

Go Yankees!

Go Rocky!

The live boxscore on Yahoo! says it is Shelley Duncan from Univ. of Arizona, not Eric!

Hey Nudge... I like Lugo's 13 game hitting streak and Renteria was an f-ing bust in Boston

I still miss Cabrera

Good win for Lester tonight.
He stared down Cancer... now the Indians, plus didn't have to use Okajima, Lopez or Papelbon.

You guys are beating up KC.
Magic number is 57

FYI... this year my boys just dumped JC Romero and now Joel Pinero when they were wetting the bed.

It would behoove the Yankees to give Farnworth and Myers their parting gifts

BTW....Chamberlain and Kennedy just got promoted to Scranton.

I'm Mets Fan, Who cares about Jon Lester? He's not a hallof fame pitcher yet. The Media is making big deal He had a cancer, now He's healthy. I'm support Jon Lester health and wish him luck in futures success now that He's cancer free but I hate the Redsox.

Would you rather have Cancer free Jon Lester now that He's healthy or tragic death of Corey lidle or Double-A manager who got hit in the head with a baseball?

OK Brian Cashman, 8 days and counting. The bullpen needs some fixing and a better utility player could help. Step on the gas.....

Gaining a win against a lefty starter is always a good thing. The team to my surprise is playing .985 defense which is fourth in the AL. If, you couple this fact with hitting and better starting pitching while his family watched. It means more wins.

On another note, I turned on the Red Sox game between 7pm/8pm. In hopes of seeing Cleveland put a hurt on them which was not to be but seeing Lester on the mound healthy, strong and pitching well makes you happy for the few success stories concerning the cancer disease. If, you have had family member(s) pass on to this disease, its wonderful to see the young man in a Red Sox uniform pitching.

Levine and Cashman are in Tampa talking to George as reported in Fl. papers. They may have something on their plate and getting George's blessing.

Lets Go Yanks

Rumor has it that the Yanks are considering a move to get Jon Garland from Chicago. Interesting in that he makes $10 mil this year and $12 mil next year. He's a so so SP, much like Lilly. He's 7-7 with a 4.15 ERA. Funny how things work in Cashman's world???

With Hughes, Karstens, and Giambi due back soon, I don't really see any needs except for the bullpen.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock into that Garland rumor.

They won't have room in the rotation once Hughes comes back and they aren't going to a six-man rotation.

And before anyone thinks it -- no, you don't acquire a so-so pitcher like Garland in order to move Moose to the pen.

Kansas City just took two out of three from the 1st Place Tigers and two out of three from the Red Sox (all after the break). They also won the series against Seattle right before the break. Just wanted to make that fact known before the naysayers come around suggesting it's "only" Kansas City and wait until you face a "real" Major League team.

i see kennedy and chamberlain got promoted to AAA and in turn, clip and c. wright got demoted to AA.

any reason for those specific two to be demoted?

also, i've been reading some "rumor mill" stories re: texiera. seems as though texas is pushing yanks to get texiera, but yanks have to part with chamberlian and others. however, braves are making a strong push for texiera and have guys like saltamacchia and other top-notch prospects to give.

Nudge, I'm not sure what you're fussing about in your first post here, but Yankees fans on this blog are quite civil 99% of the time and a lot more civil compared to many other bloggers on other sites. Of course, there will be occasional disagreements (it's called being human), and sometimes the animosity does get out of hand, but it's no different and no worse merely because this is a Yankees Forum.

Rick - Saw the same rumor in the NYPost about the Yankees being interested in Garland (and relief pitcher Matt Thornton) Starting pitcher doesn't make any sense to me with Hughes on the cusp of returning. That said, the difference between Garland and Lilly is the years. Lilly is signed for three years after this season, Garland only one.

I think Garland would be a good pick up.

Garland is a solid major league starter which is more than you can say for Igawa and frankly Mussina might very well be done.

As for Wright, look he's a nice young pitcher, but he has exactly two more major league starts than me (one lousy start and one terrific start) and he's been on the DL since the first of May.

Expecting to pop him into the rotation and having him be the second coming of Grover Cleveland Alexander is a smidge presumptuous. He could come back and be solid, but even future Hall of Famers like Glavine, Johnson and Maddux start off rocky.

Garland is a good pitcher stuck on a collapsing team. A rotation of Wang/Pettite/Garland/Clemens/Mussina wouldn't be bad at all.

(Frankly I've been saying the Yankees are better off trading Mussina, but what do I know?)

Plus Garland isn't 30 yet and has some post season experience. I think it's a smart pick up.

sully-

for sake of discussion, what moves do you see red sox making prior to deadline? will they move lowell, crisp, lugo? heard some rumblings re: texiera, helton, dye...

Eh, i don't seeing that big of a deal unless they use him to replace Mussina who i still really think needs to be traded. In which case putting in a young guy who is good at eating innings would be nice assuming they could lock him up for a few years.

Rotation is likely to look like Wang/Pettite/Clemens/Mussina/Hughes shortly anyway

But... Wang/Pettite/Clemens/Garland/Hughes would be much preferable.. that would also give them more flexability next year when Pettite and Clemens very well could retire.

Full steam ahead!

with the BIG SCHILL ready to come back to give you the BIG HURL! I'm looking foward to your schedule from Aug 16th to the 30th. A streatch of 14 games playing 1st place teams!

Doesn't matter who the Yankees play, when they're in order they are untouchable. Do you think any pitcher wants to see a team that can put 50 runs on the board in 3 days?

I like how Sox fans come to a Yankee blog to make statements, just enjoy your spot in first place... while it lasts.

I have a question to all the Yankee bloggers.....do any of you waist your time going to the Red SUX blog and put the team down and talk about the Yankees? Or do you have better things to do with your time.....like talk about the greatest team in the history of sports...The New York Yankees!

Garland makes perfect sence when you consider the ages of Clemens, Mussina, and Pettitte, and the possiblility of injury. You guys talk about Hughes like he is a "vet". The guy really has no major league "track record", and who knows how he will perform under the "pressure" of a pennant race? Garland would also look good in the rotation in "08". Getting a pitcher who has pitched well under the pressure of a pennant race, and for a World Series champion, is a great addition. The Yanks will "find" room for a pitcher with those credentials.

Nudge,

Compared to most blogs, this place is a 19th century English tea party.

It's one of the reasons I come here despite the fact that I am a Red Sox fan because people talk baseball and yes, there are disagreements, but it is usually done in the fun manner that talking baseball should be.

I hate the whole "people from this part of the country suck" or "I'm better than you because I grew up in Teaneck NJ" or all the homophobia.

It's actually nice to talk, disagree about, and debate baseball here

Just my two cents

Mike,

I did check out some Red Sox blogs once after there was a discussion here of that very question. I think I looked at three. There was no intelligent discussion on any of them that day, lots of stupid belligerence, but I only looked at them the one time -- and after all I could look here some days and see the same thing!

Roy,

I agree but I am not giving up one of my top notch prospects for him

Mike,

From my experience there are certain bloggers here who are obsessed with the Red Sox blogs. Constantly cutting and pasting comments. Not to mention those that scour the literary world to find some Boston bias in the sports media all the while harping on how the Red Sox fans are obsessed with the Yankess. Sick isn't it?

Yes. It seems like a major waist of time. I don't come on this blog that much because I am usually busy. It was the great conversation that drew me to this blog. I always try to do my best at writing something somewhat intelligent (I don't know about the spelling or grammar) and I think that is what this blog should be all about. Just my opinion. Ok back on to the Yankees. I like the Garland trade as long as we don't give up to much. Did anybody here who we were going to give up?

Sully,

Its the same few that always fly off the handle (and you all know who you are) or have a personal dislike for another blogger that I am referring to. I see no need to call another an idiot, jack a$$, moron etc etc etc. I love people disagreeing with me. Just give me a good line of argument, not platitudes. Also dont have an attitude that "this is our space so go home if your not a Yankee fan". People should never be afraid of ideas.

Give me a good debate, filled with passion, sprinkle in some humor and end it with respect for each other. I dont expect to convert people with my words, just give a different perspective that a fan of this team cant easily see.

CBS sportsline had Eric Duncan as DH and Shelly on the bench - I didn't actually watch the game -my mistake. It looks as if Eric Duncan hasn't even been called up...Riot in St. Louis you're right that would not be a nice gesture to Shelly Duncan's family (They've waited long enough to see him play)

Let's all try to keep in mind that the Garland rumor came from George King of the NY Post and he's about as reliable as Kyle Farnsworth retiring the side in order in the 8th inning.

Ain't gonna happen and doesn't make sense to make that deal now because they already have their rotation set for the rest of the season.

They need bullpen arms -- not rotation arms.

VIPER

Just to follow up on what you said it was reported 2 days ago Atlanta was going to send Renteria to Chicago for Garland.
I'd rather wait until July 31st instead of getting worked up over rumours.

Someone mentioned on one of the other blogs that the Yanks also called up Eric Duncan but I can not find him on the 40-man roster. Was he called up?

MIKE

No he wasn't called up.A bloggers mistake.

Something you rarely see!

Yes cough cough!

With so many teams needing pitching down the stretch, you'd think the White Sox could demand a (George) King's ransom for Garland.

But as always, the Yankees can assume a team's salary as well (see the Abreu/Lidle trade) so they have that leg up on the other teams.

Ok so what are the other rumors going around?

It now looks like Texas is also interested in Garland. This could get interesting.

Garland would be an excellent pickup. It would depend on the price of the transaction. We have no guarantee on Pettitte's decision for 2008. He could call it quits especially if the team folds or his family considerations change. Clemens will probably retire then comeback, only kidding about the comeback. Mussina is a #5 at best and could be a #6 on deeper pitching staffs. Hughes is really untested. Garland makes perfect sense. He's a very consistent pitcher. Sox's GM Williams and Cashman are buddies allegedly. I suspect more than Garland are in the talks.

Miguel, I don't see the Sox making a big move.

I think the emergence of Gabbard in the rotation and DelCarmen in the bullpen and the fact that Schilling and Donnelly will be coming off the DL soon means they probably have enough pitching depth and won't need to wear down Okajima and Papelbon.

The two moves that I hated when they made them (Pena and Drew) have come back to bite us in the behind. If anyone would take Pena, great. I would love to trade Drew and take a chance with Ellsbury in right, but that ain't happening.

Crisp and especially Lugo are now hitting, so all I can think for the Sox to do now is get a right handed hitting right fielder to platoon with Drew.

Got to say, I'm happy with the team.

Interesting rumor regarding the Yankees looking into Garland. It's that time of the year. Makes no sense unless Mussina is on the way out.

Hope its true

Maybe they can pull off a multiteam trade like my boys did with Nomar.

Deal off Mussina to a team like Milwaukee who needs a starter, send the Milwaukee players to the White Sox and get Jon Garland.

What intelligent human being would not want Garland over Mussina?

Sully,

I agree. I would take Garland over Mussina any day of the week. Well I guess we will have to wait another 7 days to find out. So does the Red Sox nation think that Drew is a total bust? It is unfortunate that he never really lived up to his potential.

What's with the Red Sox jackasses on this blog? Go and watch your Wally videos and leave the Yankee fans alone. What pinstripe envy you have when you have to read what Yankee fans are thinking. Can you have more of an inferiority complex?

Mussina is a 10 and 5 player (10 years in the majors, 5 with the same team) which means he cannot be traded without his consent. Given how much a creature of habit Mussina is does anyone really see him agreeing to a midseason trade? I don't.

More likely I think would be that if the Yankees were to get Garland it would be to spin him to someone else in a trade. 27 year old right hander with loads of experience and a reasonable contract might be the piece that would help the Yankees get back a Salty or a Tiexiera without having to deal Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain.

CHIp

How about trading Moose to Philly his ass would be close to home.

it woun't be 10 to 5 but

9 to 5 South to exit 7 and connect to the Penn Turnpke

Bomber,

Funny

CHIP-
You got it backwards. Getting Garland, makes it easier for the Yanks to part with Chamberlain.
