It may have been a rush to judgment to anoint Phil Hughes the second coming, as some have seemed to do. He's given up five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings today. He allowed homers to Curtis Granderson, Carlos Guillen and Marcus Thames.
Tigers starter Jair Jurrgens left the game with posterior right shoulder soreness.
The score is 5-1 Tigers.

So he's gettin hit ... the team will be ok ... we've had our bumps ... Tank Top, deals with Beijing, gang caps ... Hughes will be fine ... the team will be fine ... It's been 7 years since we won the WS ... we need a bit of time for the kids to develop.
We may not make the playoffs this year ...
Does it really matter?
We have a great deal of youth and a hungry team that will get a lot better next year.
"We have a great deal of youth..."
We have quantity and quality pitching wise, and a dearth of talent in the field. With Jeter, Posada, Matsui... a year older and Arod headed out of town I'm not sure where the runs come from next season.
The runs will come from new faces and old...Jeter , Matsui and Posada (he will be back)...plus Melky , Cano and possibly Duncan...if we are truly blessed Tabata will be up.
There is more good ahead than bad;)
The season is officially over.
Looks like it's bad all around today! Red Sox gunning for a sweep 5-1! The bats are all warmed up for Tuesday!
How's things going on your end? Moose tomorrow...looks like Detroit takes 3 out of 4 and an 8 game lead for the BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL!!!!
The schedule give-ith
....and the schedule take-ith away.
And you guys thought you were good because you were bashing last place teams!
....it's FUN beat'in up on AAA line-ups....isn't it?
Sorry TNG, are you on drugs? The Red Sox have played Tampa Bay and the White Sox, two of the worst teams in all baseball. They should be winning. When is the last time they faced a real team? They played the Angels at Fenway and lost one to them. Home teams always have the advantage in case you don't know.
The Yankees have played Angels in California (we won one), seven games v. Tigers so far (we won four), and we swept the Indians in their house. How can you compare those sissy teams the Red Sox are playing to the real deals the Yankees have been playing lately? Get real.
Craig,
It is simple
Get Ludwick from the Cards for LF. They have Duncan, Edmonds, Encarnacion, the Japanese guy I can't remember, (good role player and a nice person) Ankiel and Colby Rasmus who is the best CF prospect in the MLB, or at least in the top five.
That's like 7 guys for three spots.
We could try for Josh Hamilton from the Reds for CF. Best arm and bat speed in the NL. Of course this team seems to have a real aversion to white Christians for some odd reason ... as do the Mets ... (Chad Curtis went on record about this a few years ago ...)
Posada will be ok. Let Joba close if need be in the event Mo goes.
Don't know what to think about A-Rod. I hope he stays.
Horne, Kennedy ... they will do ok ... they may even be great. Hughes looks pretty good.
I think the future is going to be a good one, especially if they focus on top US college talent like Joba and Kennedy ... (Reggie Willets and Eric Byrnes types) and stay away from Asia for the sake of marketing and globalization.
Although if you can find another Wang or two, then by all means sign them! Okajima would have been great this year! (Is that his name, the LHRP on Boston?)
Don't understand the Brackman signing with the major surgery ... were they in a crack house or something?
Anyway to lose this game, with Detroit only getting 4 hits, 3 of them homers ...
What a nightmare.
I don't think we'll make the playoffs this year ...
But so what?
It was a year of youthful infusion (Duncan and Joba!) and a year of transition, a year of the old overpriced players being marginalized, either now or with plans for that in the future ... Damon, Giambi, Moose, Clemens ... Farns ...
Meyers and Igawa are gone ...
But this team does not win on the road ... this team does not beat elite pitchers very often. (Santana, Bedard.) We need aa good of an everyday core as Colorado and the Brewers have. Just ask would you trade so-and-so straight up for Hunter Pence or Matt Holiday ... then you see how strong we are.
I think it is a strong team. With some good moves it can be a great team again.
Giambi, Abreu, Damon, Clemens, Moose ... time to go ...
Andy Pettitte has one more good year in him.
Farns needs to go.
Not sure about Henn and Villone anymore.
If Posada goes then get Bard on SD who is one of the best hitters with 2 out and RISP.
In the end it's hard to say ... a lot depends on the off season moves.
The Red Sox are ahead this year because they beat up on injured AL East teams in April and May. The entire AL East was destroyed with major injuries and the Red Sox took advantage, pulling ahead out of the gate. They have been lucky with practically no injuries this year. Schilling took a vacation, he wasn't injured (no pain, no injury). Don't think you're gonna be this lucky every year. Baseball and life don't work that way.
The White Sox are 2nd worst team in the AL and the 3rd worst team in all MLB. Tampa Bay is the worst team ever in all MLB. Congratulations Red Sox for some impressive wins, LOL, LOL, LOL.
Yankees last 4 series against THE BEST teams in the MLB:
Indians, 3-0
Tigers, 3-1
Angels 1-2
Tigers 1-2 (so far)
Yankees 8 - Best Teams 5
Three of the four series (nine games) were on the road.
LOL LOL LOL
Dude we're in deep $hit.
Drive-by Sox fans want to gloat and you can't blame them regardless of who they're playing the fact remains...We're 7.5 out and as a Sox fan I'd imagine I'd feel pretty confident.
Making fun of who they are playing is cheap and makes you look desperate.
Red Sox last four series:
Devil Rays 2-1
Angels 2-2
Devil Rays 2-1
White Sox 3-0 (so far)
Red Sox 9 - Other Teams 4
Considering the quality of the teams the Yankees & Red Sox have played, the Yankees have done much better. Let's compare apples to apples.
MichaelPTRS,
Wins are wins but Red Sox fans shouldn't goat over quality of wins, just quantity of wins. A big difference, pal.
Anon,
The Red Sox are ahead this year because they've got their best squad since forever.
I would take this team over the '04 team in every facet except MAYBE lineup.
I hate them as much as you do, but you can't make up a bunch of excuses like "they beat up on injured teams."
That's just as low as blaming the Yankees for getting back into the playoff picture because "they beat up on bad teams."
What do you expect us to do?
Look, I'm not worried about our squad but the Red Sox are where they are because they are the Major's best team. Period.
Chuckie and MichaelPTRS,
Please get up off your knees.
Chuck
Well said.
Now join me in prayer for Mussina. LOL
Seriously this is pretty unfortunate I had hoped not to go into the Boston series with such a large defceit.
Anon
YOU SHOULD GET ON YOURS!!
AND PRAY FOR RAIN TOMORROW.
We're on the verge of elimination "PAL"
We are NOT out of the wild card race. Mariners and Angels play 7 games against each other and we play 3 against Mariners at Yankees Stadium. We are not playing bad ball at all. We are losing by small margins most games...and that's against the best teams in the MLB.
And don't give up on Mussina yet. He usually comes back strong after he bombs. You can pray for rain MichaelPTRS, while I pray that Mussina kicks Tiger butt tomorrow.
Okay we're not on the verge of elimination.
But we are on the verge of loosing control our destiny...
That to me is very uncomfortable.
Anon:
Are you? Why in the world would you ask if I was on drugs? What a completely ridiculous and worthless statement! I see no reason for it and really don't understand how you would think it was even relevant...unless you were on drugs? You spout out who the Sox played...BFD..I am and always will be a YANKEE FAN!
Michael PTRS:
Don't give up hope just yet;)
Oops Sorry Anon!!!!!!!!!! It was Sorry TNG not me you were refering to! I am very sorry for what I wrote and FU SorryTNG!
TNG, That was not directed to you, it was directed to the person named SorryTNG who was responding to you.
Glad we cleared that up, TNG.
Sorry , I just realised it...my apologies!
Hey! Sox are still taking batting practice in Chicago 11-1. After we take a nice day off in NY tomorrow and watch Verlander take care of you. We'll be nice a rested and waiting for you to come home!
See ya Tuesday night!
can't wait!....can you?
Lol...enjoy it while you can Sox fans......Most of you never come here unless your team has a big lead. It's far from over little fella and I am sure The Bombers have something left in the tank;). BTW, you guys like beating up on The DevilRays and wWhiteSux???? A REAL team will be meeting you REAL soon...mark my words!
The White Sox are freaking useless and are a joke of a ballclub. That teams has quit for awhile now.
Jesus, Sonny Corleone put up more a fight in the toll booth than the White Sox did.
I hear what you are saying Anon... then again, the Yankees FEASTED on lousy teams to get back into it.
I'm not gloating about beating the D'Rays and White Sox 6 out of 7 times. I'm just glad they are winning the games they are SUPPOSED to win.
That's the key to winning (and what the Yankees have been doing for over a decade.):
Beat the tar out of sub par teams and hold your own against the really good teams.
The Red Sox lost late season games in both 2000 and 2005 that cost them a shot at the division those years, so I'm happy they won.
And remember when the Yankees were playing those tomato cans, it sparked the bats of Abreu, Cabrera and Cano... hopefully Papi, Drew and Lugo will continue this hot hitting.
The Yankees played the Angels and a Tigers team with a rejuvenated bullpen... not an easy task.
Then they take on my boys...
And after that they play a grand total of 2 series against contending teams for the rest of the year:
The Mariners for 3 and the Red Sox for 3 more.
There's a bunch against the D'Rays, Blue Jays, Orioles and Royals.
Meanwhile the Mariners have a bunch against the Angels, the Indians and the Tigers... plus the A's are playing better as well.
More than enough chances to make up 4 games in the loss column.
I still can't see the Yankees missing the playoffs
Sox Update,
F@ck you, you stupid little troll.
We never see assh@les like you unless your asswipe team has a big lead.
Go back and obsess about the Yankees.
Boston scumbag loser.
Not a good weekend so far. Hughes just got a few breaking balls up and it cost him.
Hopefully, Moose breaks out of it tomorrow and gets back on track.
The season is not over yet. That being said, if the Yankees lose tomorrow - which is probably going to happen seeing as it is Mussina going against Verlander - and Seattle wins again, then that will probably wrap things up. A four game lead going into September is going to be pretty hard to come back from considering the Mariners apparently don't lose anymore.
I'm hoping they can surprise me, but the fact remains that Clemens, Hughes, and Mussina have hurt this team down the final stretch of the season - as well as Wang until last night. The only consistent starter since the All-Star break has been Pettitte and a successful team can't win with one pitcher. Hopefully, a rotation of Pettitte, Wang, Hughes, and Chamberlain will shake things up next year.
The Yankees lost the first two months of this season due to injury so there was a ton to make up. You can't win in the big leagues with minor league pitchers who aren't ready to come up but are called out of desperation especially when they come from AA. Even Hughes wasn't supposed to come up. It's amazing the Yankees are only two games out in the wild card race seeing that they have only been playing less than three months this season. You will see a big difference next year, mark my words.
I agree with Anon about 2008
They won't have as many holes on the staff and they'll have the young pitchers from the start of the season instead of leaning on Farnsworth/Myers/Igawa/That dude Freddy with the signs banging the pan with a spoon
However, let's finish 2007 first, shall we?
Funny how you all think the Sox are losers when they beat up on the "bad" teams...the Yankees are only where they are at this point because they did the same thing...funny how no one sees it that way. Should be a very interesting week this week in NY.....
Look, Glory, pathetic Red Sox fans are flocking here to brag about awesome the Sox are for beating up Tampa Bay four out of six games and for beating the zombie next to last place White Sox. They are at the bottom of the entire MLB heap except for maybe the Rangers. Sox fans come here and brag, we tell you the truth about your team, that these wins are not impressive even though they count.
The Red Sox are not gonna stay at the top forever and when they come down, Yankees fans will flock to your blogs to torment you and give you a taste of your own medicine. Do you really think you're gonna stay on top forever? Yankees fans are just aching to get sweet revenge in your face. It's all a matter of time.
Sully:
Your words give you away.......Vito Corleone
ANON , Nan , Andy , Bonds = Sully...don't let him/her fool ya;)...Vito Corleone
As a Yankee Fan
I disagree with the previous statement.
I have not and will not be frequenting any "SOX blogs" regardless of the outcome from here on in and/or probable future.
I'm happy to have objective and spirited debate with those redsox fans who wish to participate in such...ie Sully, and the suddenly-less casual "Casual Observer" but I will not seek it out on a "Redsox Blog"
However the "Drive-By" Redsox fan who, spurred by the recent shock of their divisional lead having been shrunk down from arrogance to panic and now back again is feeling his "oats" hah not even sure what that means but I think it applies.
It is true and our Redsox "panelists" ie-"Sully" have even verified that the majority of their fellow brethren are indeed paranoid and conditioned to be so, so all this is to be expected.
Some of us here get emotionally out of control when they show up in our most vulnerable state having lost or having lost in an embarassing or important game or 2.
I'm as guilty as anyone but to respond in kind rather than ignore them is to provide them their comfort.
I hate to get all psychological on yall but for real we need to chill and allow these little paeons their moment for now...
It may not happen for us this year.
We may not get our annual SOX collapse moment.
NOW PRAY FOR RAIN TOMORROW!!
Michael PTRS
I was tormented last week with the EXACT terminology that Sully used...be it him or not? "Corleone" family referances "tomato can" and others give it away! I really could care less but don't mistake a wolf in sheep's clothing!
What did I give away?
I made a Godfather joke
Please don't tell me this is another "Sully is actually someone else" thread.
I'm Sully
I've never posted under any other name than Sully
Jeez!
Thanks for the compliment Michael PTRS
Welcome.
News flash for Yankee fans: since All-Star break- Bombers 29-15. Old Towne Team- 27-17. Say what you want you would be in a dogfight wheter you had a bad start or not. Your torid second act has been matched by a last offensive team. The Red Soxs are for real better start believing it because the stats don't lie.
Red Soxs are winning baseball just like another old time team. The beloved NY Yankees of 1998. Timely hitting, good starting pitching, and an excellent bullpen. No MVPs, no batting leaders, no home run leaders, no rbi leaders, just grind it out baseball. Look it up, it's all there in black and white...
Keith
Kill yourself.
But first kill all your relatives.
Yes.
Even the children.
I see someone has allowed ole knuckle-dragger back on the computer again.
Whining about the Red Sox and making half-baked excuses for the Yanks...typical.
The Yanks are playing better than expected....yes...better than expected. Think about where they were just a few short months ago. There is certainly reasons to be hopeful for the future....some fine young arms along with a few up and coming "dirt-dog" type position players that will fill in nicely around the proven commodities such as Jeter, Arod, and Posada.
The Yanks management seems to have discovered that past 5-6 years practice of becoming the parking lot for aging egomaniacs who used to be good, but want to have long term overblown contracts, is just bad business, and evidently have decided to invest in the future with youth and building from within. Smart move. Will it catapult them into the playoffs this year?...doubtful, but who knows...we'll see how Cleveland, Detroit, and Seattle does over the last month of the season. Will the Yanks become "The" dominant team next season?...doubtful...but they are heading in the right direction. Alot depends upon the ownership and management of the Yanks over the next few seasons, imo.
As far as the Red Sox go....who can reasonably argue with the best record in MLB....it aint luck...this team is built for the short series as well as the long run...and guess what...they are only going to get better next season...even if they make no moves over the winter. The Sox have maintained dominance without Manny and Ortiz bashing 45 dingers apiece. They have been able to lead the pack in spite of the flat out failure of J D Drew. They have done this because of minor players who consistently contribute...ie Dustin Pedroia (ROY, imo), Youks, Mikey Lowell, Okijima, a resurgent Lugo, and of course stellar pitching from the starting rotation and the best era in MLB from their pen. The sox pitching only gets better next season too....Dice-K will be better....after a season under his belt of MLB in a new country/culture...it is reasonable to expect him to improve. Beckett has established himself as one of the premiere pitchers in the league. The ageless and timeless Wakefield may win 20 games this season...he's the best #4/5 starter in MLB. This kid Bucholz is a phenom and will be in the starting rotation next season...and he will be there for a long time. Papelbon is unquestionably the guy you want out there in the 9th. The list goes on...and as I said...this team only gets better with another season under it's belt. They have been declared "America's team", and have earned it....the Yanks will fight like hell to reclaim that title...so..as I see it, we all can expect great baseball and a increased rivalry over the next few seasons.
Now...tuesday-thursday looms....I intend to enjoy the heck out of that series. Both teams are throwing their best against each other....should be a whale of a series.
Red Sox are America's team? That is the biggest crock of bull propaganda by the Boston media to come about in the history of baseball. All that bull about all their games being sold out everywhere they go is a bald face lie. I have friends who travel all over the US and visit ballparks regularly and they never have problems getting tickets when the Red Sox play and they always buy the last minute because they don't know how long they will be in town. The only problem they have getting tickets is when the Yankees are in town. So Red Sox Nation, stop with the lying propaganda to make yourselves appear to be greater than the Yankees. You should be ashamed.
Anon... can you please relax? Seriously... you are making an a** of yourself
Max, you ARE an a**. Take a hike, birdbrain.
Dude, what's your problem?
Seriously
