I've got the lineup and some pregame notes. Today it will be Chien-Ming Wang on the mound for the Yankees and Curt Schilling for the Red Sox. The Yankees are going for the sweep.
First, the lineup:
Red Sox
Pedroia 2B
Crisp CF
Ortiz DH
Youkilis 1B
Lowell 3B
Drew RF
Varitek C
Hinske LF
Cora SS
Schilling P
Yankees
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Posada C
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF
Wang P
Mike Mussina spoke. He is disappointed and was initially mad to be taken from the lineup. He seems to understand better now, though.
This is pretty unbelievable -- someone from MLB went to Red Sox manager Terry Francona DURING the game last night in the dugout to tell him he needed to be wearing his uniform jersey. He was wearing a Red Sox pullover, as he often does. But apparently MLB is cracking down on this. They want people to be wearing their proper uniforms.
Francona went off about that this morning. I wasn't there for that, but we'll have a story on it. When asked about it, Joe Torre agreed with Francona. Torre said: "You'd think there would be more important things to do this time of year than think about Mickey Mouse stuff like this. It's a farce, I think."

I've always thought some managers had no business wearing uniforms anyway. MLB should come up with some other type of dress code for managers.
Thank god Posada is playing today. We need to win every game possible from here on in.
I'm glad Posada is playing today. We need to win every game possible.
Oops. Sorry for the repeat.
Tito is wearing MLB approved merchandise, who cares whether or not he is wearing a jersey. The pullover has the Sox and the MLB logo, he wears the hat, the pants, he is the manager not a player. I understand the "rule" but this goes back to when managers actually played. Its retarted that MLB would come down on him now, he's been rocking that look since he started managing the Sox.
too me its more laughable when managers like Dusty Baker come out wearing full uni's with wristbands and they are all taped up like they are actually going out there to play. Let the managers sit in the dugout in pullovers or team jackets just as long as its not a t-shirt.
The SOMEONE in question was former Yankee GM Bob Watson who has said he has repeatedly warned Francona and gotten zero response.
as for Mussina, what not to understand? you have sucked in you last few outings and deserve to be skipped in the rotation. get your mind right over the next week and get your a$$ back out there when your number is called.
Moose was mad? How about the people who bought tickets to see him "pitch"? Morons like me who drove 250 mi and spent hundreds of dollars on tickets only to see him deliver a "Whitsonian" performance?
Everyone will have a bad start now and then, but Moose has got to be kidding if he's mad about this. He'll be back in the rotation soon enough, hopefully with a rested arm and a fastball that is at least 87 mph.
Actually, it wasn't Watson, but a representative in his place. Francona also has a pretty legit excuse, beyond the fact that should it really matter, since he is still wearing Red Sox atttire from MLB. He's had some severe health problems -- heart problems and blood clotting -- for which he is supposed to wear looser-fitting clothes. I can't see how that's worth MLB's time.
I believe the best thing, from a professional standpoint, for Mussina would be to sit down after the season and decide two things: 1 - Do I want to pitch anymore? 2 - If I do, would it be advantageous for me to ask for a trade to a National League team?
I know Mussina loathes change, and so a switch to the NL might seem like a world altering affair for him. But it may also prolong his career and help him get to within shot of 300 wins. The Mets and Phillies will both be in the market for starters, and either team would keep him relatively in the same area as his PA home. Perhaps even the Braves would have interest. Given the state of available starters, I think an NL team would jump at the chance to trade for Mussina who is owed a relatively reasonable 11 mil next year.
Hey MLB how about you worry about some other things like....oh let me see....I think it is coming to me now……oh ya STEROIDS! I think it is time that MLB gets its priorities straight.
Kat -
I guess MLB has been rendered impotent against the players they have to wield their power where ever they can - I heard Kevin Long was fined $1000 for a similar offense. (Source NY Post)
Chip,
I think Moose would love to go to the Phillies, but who is going to pay his salary, unless he comes back strong in the next few weeks.
Kat: Nice follow up on the Francona "wardrobe malfunction".
Also, I didn't know Joba's real name was Justin.
And Moose would be practically a frisky rookie in the NL -- younger than Moyer, Glavine, Wells, Maddux, El Duque, the Big Unit ... need I go on?
Jim A.,
I figure that given what bad starters are making these days (Lilly $11 mil, Marquis $8 mil, Suppan $10 mil, Weaver $8.5 mil) the Phillies would be willing to pay Moose's salary since it would only be the one year rather than a 4 or 5 year deal - sort of like the way Arizona was willing to pick up all of Randy Johnson's remaining $16 mil.
He legally changed it to Joba. His sister *I think* couldn't say Justin and it kept coming out Joba.
I'm all for players playing every game "down the stretch", but the catcher is an exception. Posada is too important to abuse like this. I realize his numbers vs. Schilling, which means he should have been "off" last night and played today.
As for the managers and what they wear in the dugout, I'm all for MLB and their stance on this "issue". Torre should refrain from commenting on this subject, and let Francona and his team "fight their own battles". Every little "aggravation" is a "distraction". Anything, that separates Baseball from the other major sports I like.
Oh boy, mister "quotes" is back. Not only that, he is such an unhappy man!
MLB.com Gamday stinks. It is so far behind. Did Wang get Big Pappi out?
Sorry it finally just updated. Arod is up with Jeter on first.
Anon,
Roy isn't "unhappy" he's just "confused." First Joba should have been "traded" for Teixeira but now he is the only "reliever" the Yankees can "trust" and should be groomed to "replace" Mariano. Ian Kennedy should have been "sacrificed" to keep Eric Gagne from going to "Boston" but now he is the "savior" of the Yankee playoff "hopes."
Why are you "guys" so "hard" on Roy. He is "just" stating his "opinion".
Hey Roy. I see that Tex is really helping the Braves get to the playoffs. He is a golden god!
Chip,
No you didn't just call the great Ted Lilly a "bad starter". Oh man, you are dead meat!
Rick: Keep in mind Chip is young and he has his whole life in front of him.
"You guys" ought to "lay off" Roy. He is a "good guy" and doesn't "deserve" this "abuse".
Roy, don't "count" me among "those" who "mock" you. You are a "righteous dude" in my "book".
Jim,
Nice use of "righteous dude"!
Dog,
Beuller.....Beuller......
Is it just me, or is the Sux O pathetic without Manny in the lineup?
"I want my 2 dollars"....oh sorry I thought we were quoting lines from 80's movies...you get it "quote". Ha ha.
What is up with Giambi?
Do I smell Gold Glove here?
MZ,
Boston has a different look this season. They are built with pitching and so far, it's worked out quite nicely for them.
Schilling is dealing today!
So far.
Did any of you see what the strikeout posters are for Wang?
Squirrels! hahaha LMAO.
CANO!!!!
Well except for the homer to Cano.
How come they haven't hung any scalps when Joba gets a K?
Oh that is just wrong. Ok you gotta let me in on something. I know I am way out of date but what does LMAO stand for?
Laugh My A$$ Off
Thanks. I am so out of touch with the "texting" generation. I have no idea what half the acronyms that they use mean. I am going to have to get a handbook for when my kids are old enough to text.
Don't even worry about it Doggie.
I don't know most of them and to tell you the truth, i don't give a crap either.
My kid lives on MySpace and I don't even think that they speak English.
Boston better stop hitting the ball to Giambi.
He's a machine out there.
Maybe Posada did need off today. That's two K's in a row.
Go to cbssportsline.com if you wanna keep up with the game. Click on MLB\SCOREBOARD.
Roy that one is even slower then MLB gameday. They are still showing Posada's at bat.
Cano!!!!!
Cano has a beautiful swing when he's not chasing balls over his head.
C-A-N-O!!!
Whether it's a day game after a night game or not, there is no way Posada is going to sit against the Red Sox -- especially against a guy who he is hitting .387 against during his career.
Viper,
Nice to have you back. I assumed Posada had good numbers against Shilling or else he probably wouldn't be playing today.
Posada will do something good before this game ends.
Welcome back Viper
Michaelz... our offense stinks right now
Hopefully they'll get out of this slump
Looks like a sweep
Ugh
Better get our collective heads out of our a$$es before the Baltmore series
Thanks, fellas.
I have to give you credit, Sully.
I wouldn't be coming in here and conversing with Yankee fans if my team was losing.
Kudos.
Wang isn't throwing a no-no today. He's already at 87 pitches thru 6.0 IP.
Your offense stinks?
You scored 45,000 runs against Chicago.
Sully,
You are a rare Sox fan and I give you credit. You are only down by 2 so you never know. I am sure we will see Joba today.
Just great!
Give them some more out why don't you?
It looked like Youkilis was trying to take a shortcut home.
So do you think we see Wang for the 8th or do we see Joba?
Why is Joba pitching the 9th? Comon' Joe!
MZ,
Why don't you want Joba in the 9th? Do you want Mo? I'm just asking because I'm not sure what you're mad about- Joba pitching in the 9th or Mo not pitching.
Rest my case....
Enters Joba with a 2 -0 lead and shuts them down giving the O confidence to score more runs without the pressure.
now with the prior Pen a gem like this from wang could be lost.
Jim, it's Joba now not available for 2 days (and no Roy, this isn't an invitation for you to whine about the Joba rule). With Ramirez, Viz, and Mo available if the anemic sux somehow mount a rally, it's just plain stupid...
How sweep it is! The Sux just don't scare me at this point. Offense is weak and we can hit their best pitchers.
I hear you Michaelz, but if you're going to rest Joba, it should be against the DRays right?
Farnsworth seemed to be getting it together somewhat before last night but maybe he can hang in there over the weekend.
I think one thing that makes me happy about today is that the Yanks hit Okajima a bit so that is good news.
One thing I didn't like is that Joba didn't strike anyone out, but that's just me being a worry wart.
The captain was 4-4 and his slump should be officially over so that is also good.
It's a good day, but work lies ahead and we can't have one of those ever famous "post Boston" meltdowns that the Yanks are famous for.
Oh and you can pretty much bet that Ozzie Guillen will be done in Chicago pretty soon. Go to ESPN.com and listen to him freaking out on his team after losing to Texas. He's toast.
Guillen burned out his pitching staff 2 years ago in the Series. He's a big part of the problem in Chicago. None of those starters has been the same since and in 2005, they were all solid.
Guillen couldn't be elected dog catcher now.
Remember when the White Sox pitching coach was the hottest name on the market and the Yanks wanted him? Now....not so much.
Man, what a day!
The season is winding down and nothing is a lock. Management made the move that they felt would benefit the team. Mussinas past performances did not and should not play in the decision.
