Lineup for Tigers finale, Jeter in

Here's the lineup for tonight's game in the finale of the four-game series against the Tigers. Derek Jeter is playing. He says he's "fine."

Yankees
Damon LF
Jeter SS
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Posada C
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera CF

Mussina P

Tigers
Granderson CF
Polanco 2B
Thames LF
Ordonez LF
Guillen SS
Rodriguez C
Casey 1B
Raburn RF
Inge 3B

Verlander P

Other notables from this afternoon:

*The Tigers have placed Gary Sheffield on the disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 22, with a sore right shoulder. They recalled Timo Perrez from Triple-A Toledo.
*Hideki Matsui's right knee is bothering him. That's been a problem off and on recently. He is at DH.
*Joe Torre said they aren't concerned about Phil Hughes's velocity, which has been down somewhat, as a couple of you have noted in emails. The radar showing was a couple miles lower than what the Yankees had it at. He hit 93-94 some yesterday.
*Teams have been announced for the Arizona Fall League. The Yankees' representatives, who will play for the Peoria Javelinas, are right-handed pitchers Steven Jackson, Ross Ohlendorf, Kevin Whelan and Steven White; shortstop Reegie Corona, infielder Juan Miranda and outfielder Brett Gardner.

Mussina already is awful.

He needs a strikeout or a popup, then a DP.

THAT WAS SICK

BRAVO CANO

Maglio!!

EYES ARE CLOSED

MY GOD MELKY!!

I thought that was an inside the park grand slam

WOW!

THAT was a GREAT catch!

However, it's a matter of time before the Tigers break this puppy open.

Mussina owes Melky a drink.

If he gets out of this giving up only one, then the Wizzard was listening.

Mussina is helpless.

He's really impudent sp?

Seriously it's like he's a lamb among wolves.

Jeff,

Mussina owes Melky a bar.

LOL

Nice work john

Well at least everyone has stopped fighting about the socialism in Maine!

I think our hands are tied here with no help available with Horne and Kennedy if their innings are past their high end.

What would Catfish Hunter circa 1975 do today? Stop pitching on June 6th?

If we lose this game I will again question if we will be in the Playoffs.

Can we make it?

And Baltimore scares me ...

They may give up 39 runs in a double header to Texas but they beat us. Bedard is great and we should try to get him. Loewen too.

It will be an interesting off season I think.

Ant

How do propose we take a franchise's best pitcher let alone one who is probably sub 23yrs old?

The kid is contending for the CY.

Not sure "trying" to get him is realistic.

Very true John.

Mussina out for the 2nd inning with not much rest. Oh boy.

Verlander looks real good so far.

0-2 and he let's another guy get on.

That's 3 ER off Mussina (so far).

Just would love to see Kennedy.

Yanks can ill afford to go into another rut now-

so far tonight, their defense is awful.

i dont think ive ever seen cano slide after a grounder up the middle.

not to make excuses for the guy, but yanks rarely put up the runs, let alone play solid defense for moose.

Needed Hughes to come up big for us in August and he's not done so.

He's rookie blah blah doesn't matter you can't survive on Wang and Pettitte alone.

Roger is 45 I give him a pass.

I never expected anything more than 4th starter stuff from him anything else was bonus.

I really had hoped Hughes would come back rested and hungry ala TEXAS

I think we needed him to be our number 3 atleast as good as Andy...

This is ugly.

They just have to buckle down now and get this thing going.

It looks like Verlander is starting all of the hitters off with a fastball to get strike 1. How about looking for that fastball and driving it. Once he gets ahead in the count, it's over.

forget this game. Yankees aren't hitting Verlander but the Tigers are smashing Mussina. We face a depleted bullpen tonight just in time to face the rested Red Sox who have been playing little league teams for the past two weeks.

A double play, Jeter strikes out, Yankees look said.

sad, sad, make that sad.

And Michael Kay is impressed with Verlander. Nice to know.

There's a good comedy on Channel 4, Thank God You're Here. Better to be here than watching the New York Zombies.

Stop me if I've said this before, but I really cannot stand Mike Mussina (as a player).

You just knew this was coming even though you hope for something different.

Jim,

STOP!!!!

You've said this before.

However, feel free to repeat yourself!

Anon,

The New York Zombies.

I like that.

This has to be Mussina's last start. Can't afford having this stiff pitch each time his turn is up.

Melky is going to be too tired to play tomorrow night.

Anyone know what channel the US Open is on?

I don't know how we can get Bedard ... but people are talking about signing Johan Santana ... why not Bedard or Loewenbrau or Jeremy Feelin' Groovey Sowers?

Anyone but Mussina!

Poor guy!

7 hits in 2 innings. It's over. No K's.

We've seen enough?

Has he thrown 100 pitches yet?

He gets these guys on 0-2 counts and then still gives up runs...

This is obnoxious

Two things ...

John G. how are you?

Another thing ...

How come Catfish could throw 30 complete games in 1975 ... what's happened to the arms since then? Better training and nutrition ... other sports the records fall, but in baseball its going backwards for the pitchers.

Why?

I can't take this game tonight ... I am going to feed the ducks ... it's sunset soon.

4-0, this game is over. No way we can win with the way Mussina is pitching because Verlander looks awesome. Let's just throw in the towel now and rest to face the Red Sox. Impossible to win so why continue playing? Better to go home early and rest. At least tomorrow we have a real pitcher on the mound.

Ant

Santana can be traded for and likely will be that's why I and some others here bring him up.

Minnesota can't sign him and he's expressed his displeasure with the organization so it appears he'll be moving somewhere in the offseason.

Bedard is not going anywhere you'd literally have to trade Santana and (Player) to get Bedard out of Baltimore.

Ant,

Other than this phucking game I'm doing okay.

Anonymous,

They can't leave early. The flight back to NY is after the game.
LOL.

OMIGOD! They're out of the inning!!

WOO-HOO.

We need the mercy rule. That way we can stop the game after the 4th inning tonight.

New Yankee saying:

"It's Andy and Wang,
then pray for Rang".

"Rain" doesn't rhyme.

How many pitches will Verlander need to get out of this inning? Four? Five? Double play anyone? Mussina will be back on the mound before he gets a chance to sit down.

This feed on MLB.TV really sucks tonight!!!

Mussina doesn't even have enough time to take a leak.

Verlander is on "Auto-Pilot"

Kinda takes the wind out of the Boston series.

I'm unhappy. :-(

Phucker,

That wind died down after they swept $hit-cago.

As bad as Moose is for the next few innings, I leave him in until he hits 100 pitches.

I'm more worried about my bullpen for the next series to waste it on a game we already lost.

I know that's not the competitive spirit, but I'm being a realist.

I'll be really disapointed if Joe wastes Joba in this game.

...Wow.

So much for that. Nice going Joe.

The score board for Tigers runs scored looks like this

1 2 3 4

So by the 9th inning it will read

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

That's 45 runs. And the Rangers ain't got nothing over the Tigers.

There's a full moon tonight. I guess that's why the Yankees look so bad.

I bet that Moose could've given up a HR to Placido Polanco just as efficiently.

I see the logic in "trying" to let your bullpen stop the bleeding but we're not facing some run of the mill pitcher.

Very rarely does a team score 7 runs off of Verlander.

Great, waste the bullpen tonight so we have it tomorrow. We are not winning this game so what's the point. Keep Mussina in for the rest of this game, let him figure out his problems, and save the rest of the pitching for tomorrow. Bad move taking him out.

I'll say this: when we're bad,

we're BAD!!!

So far during this 14 game stretch, we're 5-6 including tonight's loss.

That's what I like:

CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER BASEBALL!!!

Phucking Wizzard.

Gave me bad advice!

Three people I hope are wearing a new uniform next year. Damon,Mussina,Torre

Yeah, it's Torre's fault that Mussina and Damon have lost their skills.
I actually think Damon has been playing better over the past 20 games or so, at least it looks like his legs are healthier.
