If and when the Yankees clinch a postseason berth, will Joe Torre push hard to try and overtake the Red Sox? Here's what he had to say on that subject today:
"Getting things set up for the postseason is more important."
So, at least in Torre's mind, there is no debate. What about in yours?

Oh, and if you think the point is not debatable, Jim Baumbach wrote a column earlier in the week saying the Yankees shouldn't worry about the division and was ripped mercilessly by some Yankee fans who want them to overtake the Red Sox at all costs.
Not that Baumbach doesn't deserve to be ripped just on general principle. Hey, Jim, how about updating your column logo to a post-high school photo?

No debate.
I'll take October bragging rights over September ones.
What does the unraveling ball with the Sox logo mean?
I would think that with Moose down 3-0 already it might be best to put a Yankee logo on that instead. Don't you?
3 1/2 down by the end of the day. Right behind the best team in baseball with the best record in the major leagues!
Here come the Tigers! 4-1 over KC!!!!!
GLOOM,
Your moniker is perfect for you and your Red Sox team.
GLOOM,
YOUR MONKIER IS AN OMEN FOR YOU AND THE RED SOX.
Gloom,
You think just like a typical fed sox fan: your team is only as good as the score in the 2nd inning. What an ass you are.
Gloom,
that image is a representation of your brain and your team.
Gloom,
the score is tied at 3. don't you feel like an idiot -- once again?
Aren't these the same Red Sox fans who were crapping in their collective underwear just 48 hours ago after their team nearly squandered a 14.5 game lead and DID squander the best record in the AL?
Red Sox fans are funny.
Baumbach's column photo should be the one of him getting arrested at A-Rod's book signing. (Or near arrest.)
Mientkiewicz reminds me of a first base version of Scott Brosius. That pick off tag at first base on the throw from Molina was stellar.
You mean the time that Boras had store security pushing people around after AR offered to take questions, then changed his mind?
Yeah, that time.
base running mistakes and pickoffs cost us at least five funs this series.
As usual, gloom is gone when the Yanks are doing well and his Sox are losing. The guy is a joke.
6-3 Yanks on top. So much for your gloom and doom.
Cleveland just clinched the central.
Gloom: Sox just lost to the lowely Devil Rays...just thought I'd let you know.
A new test for Joba...2 on, 2 out and here he comes!
With Mo pitching the past two days, I wonder if Joba is going to be closing this game?
HYD, i have a feeling Gloom wont be around to get that message.
Ha, I know...I like to post it anyway...gotta love how Joba has an entrance song now...Shout at the Devil by Motley Crew.
Struck him out!
I'm very glad he managed that. It's the first time I've seen him look pressured and it's great to see that he can pitch through it.
Jo-ba!! Jo-ba!!
It's great to se Molina batting so well. He can give Posada more rest from here on out without losing that much batting.
Things are shaping up to be a great October, no matter who you root for!
Except for Boston, of course, they are just falling apart, it's great to see it!!
What a fine pick-up Molina has been. My nerves used to be shot every time Jorge got a day off.
Anyone else not like that HENN is warming up right now?
Joba is going for his first professional save!
yea, i like that song, its fun to play on guitar hero.
Way to go!
Joba Rules!!!
The Yankee's win,
Joba 1st save. Yanks within 1.5 of shook Red Sox.
Magic # 2, to clinch.
What now Gloom....LOL
So, we're within a game and a half. Pettite vs. Burnett tomorrow. Sox have an off day. We win & the lead is down to a game with both teams having 6 games left to play.
It's gonna be a fun week!
happy birthday joba!!!
Gloom,
Where are you? Living up to your name, no doubt. Yankees win, Sox lose, Gloom is not only gloomy and doomy but embarrassed to death. What a fool.
Burnett gives us fits so let's hope our boy Andy is on top of his game to tomorrow.
Good win today and I agree w/ Joe Torre, I don't really care about the division, I'd choose resting players and setting up the rotation over the division crown.
I don't care what anyone says, I want the Yankees to win the division.
I don't want the Red Sox playing most of their playoff games at Fenway, where they steal signs.
I don't want the Red Sox getting last licks.
I want the Red Sox bullpen pitching the bottom of the ninth of the first two games of the playoffs.
I want the Yankees opening the post season with bunting hung all over Yankee Stadium.
I want the Red Sox believing they can lose, and the Yankees believing they will win.
I want the Red Sox flying from the East Coast to the West Coast and back again.
I want the Yankees in first place and the Red Sox looking up.
Just because.
Bunting all over the old Stadium in its last post-season sounds just right to me.
My take on setting up for post-season vs. going after the Red Sox. It's a no brainer. You set up for the post season. Winning the pennant is really no different than winning the wild card, however, I also think its important to enter the post season on a high note. So, you prepare for the post season without sacrificing wins (if possible). So, set up your starting rotation for Pettitte in Game 1, Wang in Game 2, Clemens or Moose in Game 3. Have Joba and Mo ready by giving them enough work to stay sharp without wearing them out. Continue to play the position players as they have for the 2nd half.
I read an interesting article revisiting the Scott Proctor trade. Now this is not to bash Cash because I feel he did a masterful job in the second half of the season. The most important moves being stealing Molina from Anaheim and resisting the Gagne urge/holding on to Ian Kennedy/bringing up Joba.
However, this move appears to have backfired in the short-term. Proctor, since the trade with the Dodgers, is 3-0 with a 2.93 era in 27 2/3 innings. Betemit, though not a bad player with a good glove and versatility, has become obsolete with the re-emergence of Minky.
Who makes up the bullpen in the post-season (assuming Pettitte, Wang, Clemens, and Moose are starters)?
Looks like Joba and Mo are ready.
These three games against the Blue Jays -- with one game with Toronto tomorrow -- look like a pretty darn good tuneup for the post-season.
Toronto is a quality team and they're fighting down to every last out. It's as if the Blue Jays are fighting for the post season. And it's reassuring that the Yankees are doing as well as they are.
???
An argument could be made that if procotr was still a Yankee, Joba wouldnt be...Joe has his circle and proctor was his guy. the move was as much about cashman showing Joe who runs the team as ir was in getting betemit.
Also, the Procotr deal was a classic sell high scenario. Bulpen arms, especially those managed by Torre, have a very short shelf life - see Tanyon Sturtze. Yankee scous obviously love betenit as they tried to get him last season. It is rare to find a guy who can play all 4 infield positions and play them well - plus he can hit and is going to get better.
In the playoffs he gives the Yankees so much flexibility as they can pinch hit Giambi for Minky early in a game if trailing ang have betemit to take over. If the yanks get to the WS and the double switch comes into play - his ability to play everywhere would be invaluable.
he has gotten a ton of huge hits - probably 3 or 4 game winners and has about 15 homers in limitted time. What scares me is the feeling that they got him because they are pkanning on ARod leaving.
Thank god no lilly talk on this blog - oops why did i mention his name. The team is 1 game back in the loss column and on the last thread all anyone could talk about was ted lilly as if he was Sandy Koufax reincarnated

play for the ennant while resting players and auditioning relivers. Lucky fo the yanks that they have 6 quality starters pitching well right now. If it comes down to the last game - Wang or Petitte sits down, but there is no reason to panic if hughes or kennedy takes the mound.
great that they are testing Joba. I wrote a couple days ago that I wanted to see him come in mid inning - check, come in with men on base -check
now we need to see him pitch back to back days once before the season ends - then give him 3 or 4 days off to finish the year
Home field advantage and having the choice of schedules are VERY important to a team that has a losing record on the road this year! I'm not saying to fry everyone out, but you try to win that division IF you have a reasonable shot at it, which we do.
One (1) game out in the loss column which is the REAL column! Let's go Yanks!!!!
Take it one game at a time. The Sox know the ghosts are back. let them go to L.A. We're focused on another world series championship.
Ahhhh.
The ghoooosssstttsss are back!
I think both the Red Sox and the Yankees should go for the division until Friday.
And it would behoove both teams to treat Saturday and Sunday like they were spring training games.
I don't want my team throwing their rotation out of whack for a division title on Saturday or Sunday that will mean exactly diddly on Tuesday.
Kudos to the Yanks for today's win.
Kudos to my sons for not going bananas at the park today
much of the a.l. east race will be determined tomorrow. yanks play TOR, as BOS has day off. if ynaks can get within 1 game in GB column, then there will be 6 left to play for both teams. if yanks fall to 2 GB behind after tomorrow, look for the AAA squad to face BAL and TB.
now, if yanks come out victorious tomorrow, does yanks remaining schedule their chancs for division, or does BOS's remaining schedule of MIN and OAK favor them?
(i know john g. will hate me in "looking ahead" of tomorrow's game, but sully started it.)
And speaking of looking ahead, do we believe New York Magazine's report that Boras is already in pre-negotiations with the most probable new owners of the Cubs regarding a contract for Rodriguez, or do we believe Boras's denial to the AP that he has spoken with them?
Let's try this again ...
The Yankees want to play Cleveland in the first round. That, and not where they finish in and of itself, is what's important. They are in the heads of the Red Sox, and that's all that's needed. The Angels, on the other hand, are in the heads of the Yankees.
Speaking of "in the head of," what is with it with Boston fans? They seem to have lost the allure of being loveable while remaining losers who still suffer from an inferiority complex.
The Yanks want to play anyone in the playoffs. It doesn't matter. They're the best team in baseball for the past 3 1/2 months. Why run away from a team? Seriously. The "Yankees" that the Angels are in the heads of...who are they?
Randy Johnson and Shawn Chacon? They were losers for the Yanks in 2005.
Or is it David Wells and Orlando Hernandez? Or is it Mike Stanton?
With all the kids on this team and "true Yankee" veterans, there is no psyche issue here. Forgetaboutit.
Brooks... again, be careful of picking your poison. What playoff team looked more dazed and confused than the Tigers who were swept at home by the Royals (including a game where they lead 6-0) to blow home field advantage last year?
And the Yankees with an awesome firing on all pistons offense and a great starting 2 of Wang and Mussina.
The Indians are a REAL good team! I mean REALLY good.
So are the Angels. And their recent problems not withstanding, the Red Sox aren't exactly a lousy team either.
All 4 teams in the AL are good and it should be a pretty cool playoffs.
(Who knows what the NL will bring?)
Yankees, Red Sox Jokes
On the first day of school a first grade teacher explains to her class
that she is a Red Sox fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if
they, too, are Red Sox fans.
Wanting to impress their teacher, everyone in the class raises
their hand except one little girl.
The teacher looks at the girl with surprise
'Janie, why didn't you raise your hand?' 'Because I'm not a Red Sox fan,'
she replied.
The teacher, still shocked, asked, 'Well, if you are not
a Red Sox fan, then who are you a fan of?'
'I am a Yankee fan, and proud of it,' Janie replied.
The teacher could not believe her ears. 'Janie, why pray tell are you a
Yankee fan?'
'Because my mom is a Yankee fan, and my dad is Yankee fan, so I'm a Yankee
fan too!'
'Well,' said the teacher in a obviously annoyed tone, 'that is no reason
for you to be a Yankee fan. You don't have to be just like your parents
all of the time. What if your mom were an idiot and your dad were a mooron,
what would you be
then?'
'Then,' Janie smiled, 'I'd be a Red Sox fan.'
--------------------------------------- --------------
A family of Boston Red Sox fans headed out one Saturday to shop for the
youngest boy's birthday.
While in the sports shop the son pick s up a Yankee jersey
and says to his older sister, 'I've decided to become a Yankee fan and I
would like this New York Yankee jersey for my birthday.'
His big sis ter is outraged by this and promptly whacks him upside his
head and says, 'Go talk to mother.'
Off goes the little lad with the jersey in hand and finds his mother.
'Mom?'
'Yes, son?'
'I've decided I'm going to be a Yankee fan and I
would like this jersey for my birthday.'
The mother is outraged at this, promptly whacks him around the head and
says, 'Go talk to your father!'
Off he goes with the Yankees jersey in hand and finds his
father.
'Dad?'
'Yes, son?'
'I've decided I'm going to be a Yankee fan and I would like
this jersey for my birthday.'
The fath er is outraged and promptly whacks his son in the back of his
head and says, 'No son of mine is ever going to be seen in THAT! '
About half an hour later they're a ll back in the car and heading towards
home. The father turns to his son and says 'Son, I hope you've learned
something today? '
The son says, 'Yes, Dad, I have.'
'Good! And what is it you learned?'
The son replies, 'I've only been a Yankee fan for an hour
and I already hate you Red Sox bastardss!'

Four baseball fans - a Cubs fan, a Cardinals fan, a Red Sox fan, and a
Yankees fan - are climbing a mountain and arguing about who loves his
team more.
The Cubs fan insists he is the most loyal. 'This is for the Cubs!' he
yells, and jumps off the side of the mountain.
Not to be outdone, the Cardinals fan shouts,
'This is for the Cardinals!' and throws himself off
the mountain.
The Yankee fan is next to profess his love for his team.
He yells, 'This is for everyone!' and pushes the Red
Sox fan off the mountain.
------------------------------------------------- --------------------
A Yankee fan liked to amuse himself by scaring every Red Sox fan he saw
strutting down the street in an obnoxious Sox shirt. He would swerve his
van as if to hit them, then swerve back just missing them.
One day while driving along, he saw a priest. He t hought he would do a
good deed, so he pulled over and asked the priest, 'Where are you going,
Father?'
'I'm going to give Mass at St. Francis church, about two miles down the
road,' replied the priest.
'Climb in, Father. I'll give you a lift!' The priest climbed into
the passenger seat, and they continued down the road.
Suddenly, the driver saw a Sox fan walking down the road, and he
instinctively swerved as if to hit him. But, as usual, he swerved back
onto the road just in time.
Even though he was certain that he had missed the guy, he still heard a
loud THUD. not knowing where the noise came from, he glanced in his
mirrors but still didn 't see anything.
He then remembered the priest, and he turned to the
priest and said, sorry Father, I almost hit that Red Sox fan.'
'That's OK,' replied the priest 'I got him with the door.'
Good jokes to start the day. Thanks!
stupid question, but its Monday, so here goes-
Yanks are 2 games away from playoff berth.
does a yankee win and tigers loss today = a playoff berth?
what type of wins/losses get the 2 down to a playoff berth?
Miguel,
Yes, any combination of Yankee wins and Detroit losses equaling two get the Yankees in the playoffs. So it could happen today.
Read Johnette Howard article. We want to win the pennant if it is there to take. Period. But not at all costs. Use the guys you have, and some bench players. We can still win the pennant. Why in this society is it all or nothing? In this situation, you CAN have your cake and eat it too! Boston has said the same thing about just getting in, but if this is true, why even waste time playing the remaining games? This is not football, or basketball. And there is an extra day to the pennant winner with the best record (this could help get Mo and Joba get some extra rest). C'mon columnists, don't be scaredy cats! WE CAN DO IT!!!
Listen up....
Once we clinch our top priority has to be to prepare our starting rotation and bullpen for the playoffs.
In order for this to be done, no pitcher should be over or under used this final week. We want to be able to also setup our rotation for the playoffs.
1. Wang
2. Pettitte
3. Clemens
4. Mussina/Hughes (4th starter/ Long Relif)
Ian Kennedy should be shutdown for the season due to his high inning totals and recent injury concerns.
Mariano, Joba, and Vizciano need to be fully rested the last few days as well.
Just because this all needs to be done does not mean we stop trying to win games. We just have to do it while abiding by the above regulations. The Red Sox have to face two harder teams and it should not be hard to overtake them even while preparing for the playoffs.
Do you think Hughes should be getting 'trial runs' as a reliever this last week, to see if he can function in that role? Sometimes he has the first-inning yips...
I think it's too late in the season to try to switch Hughes' routine.
Mike from Jersey: When you say "Pennant" do you mean division title? The Pennant is what you win in the ALCS, let's get past the division series first. One step at a time!
You also have to love the timing of the NY media to start this A-Rod to the Cubs crap now. It's like they are all Mets fans or something and they want to see if they can ruin the Yankees season.
This is a pet peeve of mine, but does everyone know that winning the pennant means winning the American League (i.e. winning the ALCS) and not the division? This along with the use of "best in the league" meaning best in baseball are the two most misused phrases by fans. I know I'm being anal, but it bugs me.
To me, you keep winning (because you want to be playing your best baseball going into the playoffs), you set up your rotation, and you see give it your best shot in the playoffs. Since the advent of the wildcard, winning the division means squat these days...
MichaelZ....great minds think alike aye?
Marianne,
Yes I do think Hughes should come in for relief a few times before the playoffs since it is very likely that he will come out of the bullpen for long relief at some point in the playoffs.
He is slated to start Thursday against the Devil Rays. Sat or Sun he should be given an inning or two out of the bullpen so he can get a feel for it. That will also give Joba, Vizciano or Mo some rest for the playoffs where they will be used frequently.
So we're not willing to risk Joba's future for today, but we're willing to do that w/ Hughes? I'd have to think the Yankees are applying some kind of rules to Hughes' availability. I could see him relieving if it was on his scheduled pitching day and the starter was in trouble or something but I don't think he should be the 7th inning guy or anything like that.
It's a tough call because the Yanks are confident right now and they want to win it all but they surely don't want to mortgage the future. Cashman will have a tough call in the next couple of days/weeks.
Hughes hasn't pitched very well early in ballgames recently so I'm not sure that he will be a good relief pitcher. Now, if you tell me it's Hughes or Farnsworth/Bruney/Henn, I'll take Hughes every time.
Jim A,
You have to think that at some point in the playoffs Joba and Vizciano will be unavailable and it will come down to Farnsworth,Bruney, Henn or Hughes.
Hughes has not even pitched 100 innings this year yet due to his injury. He would also only get a chance to start in the playoffs if our pitching staff gets beaten really badly.
So since he has a good power arm with a solid curveball, I think he would be great in relief for the playoffs.
Great minds...LOL
Michaelz and Jim A along with Rick Keyes and Viper are a theater of know nothing clowns.
I'm sure none of us would be thinking of Hughes as a potential reliever in the post-season if we had more reason for confidence in the relievers we have.
That plus the fact that the starting pitching is looking stronger.
Anyway, I was thinking maybe he'd have a better chance to do well in that situation if he got a taste or two beforehand.
I agree Marianne.
His Mid 90's Fastball and 70mph Curveball really could be more effective then any of our other options.
I am just not as sure about his control as I am with Joba.
Marianne,
We wouldn't be thinking of Hughes as a reliever either if he had a better season. The fact that Mussina will probably be in the playoff rotation doesn't exactly give me confidence.
Anon: Thanks for mentioning my name with the others, I'm honored. :)
I was happy to see that AJ Burnett will not be pitching today, but am wary of the Yankees against any rookies, they don't seem to do well against pitchers they haven't faced before, but what do I know? I'm just a know nothing clown.
I have to say I am a bit downhearted at not having been mentioned with the 'know-nothing-clown' group. I guess it was too much to hope for that I could qualify to be named along with Jim, Viper, et. al.
So I do not think anyone can argue that in order for us to go far in the playoffs we need a much better showing out of our bullpen.
Mariano and Joba can not pitch every game.
Vizciano has been a little shaky and should be rested a lot this week.
Britton and Bruney and Farnsworth will need to step up their game a lot for the playoffs. I do not understand why Britton is not used more often.
Igawa, Edwar and Henn have ERA's around 7 and really should not be trusted in any situation.
Do not be surprised if we see Hughes, Clemens and Mussina come out of the bullpen in order for us to get through a 6th, 7th or even 8th inning.
Good News - Burnett Scratched today...

Jesse Litsch will take the mound in the series finale, filling in for scheduled starter A.J. Burnett, who was bumped to Tuesday after attending to a family matter on Monday.[/quote]
Cue the conspiracy theorists...Redsox Nation will cry a foul that Wells and now Burnett are out .
Henn won't be on the postseason roster. If the Yanks carry two lefties, it will be Igawa/Villone.
"Long relief" pitchers in the post season only pitch when the starter is bombed. So if Hughes is used in that situation, he'll be coming in with the Yankees down by five or six runs. Not exactly a pressure situation. I don't think they'll use him in the sixth or seventh inning of a close game to get out of a jam.

F*cking Toronto. Jesse Litsch has gotten killed by the Yankees this season, giving up 8 runs over 5.2 IP in 2 starts.
First Vernon Wells decides he could play against the Red Sox, then decides he can't play against the Yankees, now Burnett leaves for "personal reasons"...
I'll forgive Toronto/Burnett if this is legit though.
How about Roger Clemens and Ian Kennedy has been scratched in this series as well.. Stop crying Redsox Fans. Yankees took 2 out 3 from Bluejays with Wells and Burnett starting last week at toronto...
Sorry Marianne...I assumed you and the delusional dork Jim A were one in the same since you both have the same writing styles...
uncontrolled,irrational no substance babble.
Anon,
Opposed to all the great contributions you are providing this board with right now?
If you are going to rip people on this board without even giving any specific reasoning at least have the testicular fortitude to post with an actual name.

Miguel,
(i know john g. will hate me in "looking ahead" of tomorrow's game, but sully started it.)
NEVER Miggy!! :-)
This season has taught me to take it one game at a time, take small bites, baby steps, etc.
It paid off too. Yanks are what? 69-36 since May 29th?
And I didn't have a heart attack! LOL
I know that some of you guys want to catch Boston and get the division. If we can do that without exhausting the team then great. But to me, the most important piece of business is to get into the playoffs. Once we get the ticket, then setting up the rotation for the LDS is the most important thing. Whether we face the Tribe or Anaheim, we're going to need outstanding efforts from the starters to get past the 1st round. If we don't have at least that, then it's one and done for us.
I'm basing this on our recent history in the post season. Last year everyone thought that we were gonna beat Detroit and we all know how that turned out. Other than Nate Robertson, their staff pitched a hell of a lot better than ours.
Setting up the rotation is most important because if the Yanks start on the road, I would hope that Wang doesn't pitch until game 3 at the Stadium. He's a better pitcher at home and his ERA is almost 2 runs less. If the Yanks win the Division, then you'd want Wang to pitch in either game 1 or 2, assumming that they'd have home field. Since Cleveland and Anaheim are 3 games ahead of the Yanks in the standings for best overall record with 7 left, then I'd say that it's a bit of a stretch to think that we can overtake the both of them and leapfrog Boston at the same time.
Can it be done? Yes it can, but at what cost? To me, it's not that important that we'd have to go all out to get it.
The Indians are a good team (in fact all four playoff teams are good teams), but between travel and history I'd want to play Cleveland. This is a team that badly underachieved in the first round the past two years, and they don't need to hear anything about what might go wrong versus LAA. Besides, if LAA plays Boston, I think it will be a war.
Hindsight may prove differently, but that's why they play the games.
Wang and Pettitte are going to pitch Games 1 and 2.
I know there is a sizable discrepancy between Wang's road and home ERA, but Torre is going to want his top guys pitching most often.
Besides, they can't depend on Clemens pitching two games in a series when he can't even pitch one right now.
You're probably right Viper, but I feel we'd have a better chance if Wang pitched at home, at least in the LDS. However, I'm not the guy that writes the lineup card out or sets up the rotation.
If the Yanks held Wang back for game 3, then Moose may get the call for game 2 and Clemens would pitch game 4. If it went 5, then Pettitte gets the ball.
The only way that Pettitte and Wang could possibly pitch twice in the LDS is if the Yanks get the 5 games in 8 days round. If they get the 5 games in 7 days round, then only Pettitte would get the ball twice.
Since it looks like the rotation is set with Pettitte, Wang, Clemens and Moose, who's going to be in the pen?
Mo
Joba
Vizciano
Farnsworth are the givens.
Which guys do you all think the pen will round out with from the following list:
Villone
Hughes
Kennedy
Veras
Ohlendorf
Henn
Ramirez
and feel free to add anyone that I forgot.
