« Yankees' youthful lineup | Main | Tied up at 1-1 in sixth, now leading 3-1 in 7th »

Notes from pre-game

Very late buses to the ballpark today, and no batting practice, given that the Yankees have clinched a playoff berth and are resting many regulars.
Joe Torre said the first two games will feature Chien-Ming Wang and Andy Pettitte as starters, though he's not sure of which order. Pettitte will start Saturday but not throw a full game. They don't know yet if their playoff series will begin on Wednesday or Thursday.
The plan for Roger Clemens is to throw a simulated game Monday, then probably pitch Game 3 of the playoffs. He is not here today and will not be in Baltimore. Mike Mussina will be a starter in the playoffs depending on two things: Clemens's status and whether the Yankees are in the more spaced-out series or not. If they are in the longer series, Torre said it would be "logical" to have both Wang and Pettitte lined up to start two games apiece (if the series were to last five games).
The Yankees will take one starter as a long man, likely Phil Hughes. However, if they only need three starters and Clemens is healthy, that could be Mussina.

Now the only drama is unfolding in Shea. Tonight I am a HUGE Saint Louis Fan. Go Cards!

The Muts missing the playoffs will cap what has been a beautiful second half of baseball. It would be only fitting if this season they vot in TRI-MVPs in the NL with Utley, Howard, and Rollins sharing the honor.

Interesting question

Who benefits more from the longer series. The Indians who get to throw Sabathia and Carmona twice, or the Yankees throwing Wang and Pettite twice and more importantly not throwing Mussina?

They also have the added benefit of using Hughes out of the pen and not having to hold him back in case Clemens cant go at the last minute

If the Yanks are in the longer series then I would like to see a rotation of Wang, Pettitte, Clemens/Moose. That way, Wang gets to pitch game 4 at the Stadium on normal rest and Pettitte gets game 5 on normal rest.

PTRS: I saw that you worry about Sabathia. And that you talked about the lefties struggling against lefthanded pitchers. What I ask you to think about is when did this happen. Anything pre-All Star break is irrelevant. That's when the lefties got into their groove. Cano is actually batting ~.340 since the All Star break and the lefties are all hitting on all cyclinders. Is Sabathia a great pitcher, yes, does that concern me, no. Especially if ARod isn't slumping. He and Jeter could single handedly win games against Sabathia.

Glad everyone enjoyed my insight on the steal. Some days I wish I could get a job coming up with new baseball formulas (you know, like VORP)instead of this accounting thing, but it pays well and those jobs aren't exactly the easiest to find.

HYD,
You could be the next Bill James...just don't sell out and go to work for a crappy company like he did..LOL.

Well, he was named to the Time 100 as one of the 100 most influential people in the world...that would be great.

Some interesting things that James is "responsible" for over on the Sox side:

the 2003 bullpen mess (he advocated that closers were over rated) that lead to them acquiring Kim and then Foulke
David Ortiz's signing
Mark Belhorn trade
Emphasis on OBP

what do you guys think is harder pitching or hitting?

Hitting
