Predictions on playoff roster

Here’s my projection for the American League Division Series roster:

Catchers (2)
Jorge Posada
Jose Molina

Infielders (6)
Alex Rodriguez
Derek Jeter
Robinson Cano
Doug Mientkiewicz
Jason Giambi
Wilson Betemit

Outfielders (6)
Johnny Damon
Hideki Matsui
Melky Cabrera
Bobby Abreu
Shelley Duncan
Bronson Sardinha

Starters (4)
Andy Pettitte
Chien-Ming Wang
Roger Clemens
Mike Mussina

Relievers (7)
Mariano Rivera
Joba Chamberlain
Luis Vizcaino
Kyle Farnsworth
Ron Villone
Phil Hughes
Jose Veras

There are a couple spots, in my mind, that are up in the air. The final bullpen spot or two are shaky. Jose Veras could easily be replaced on that list by Edwar Ramirez, Ross Ohlendorf or Chris Britton. I don’t think that decision has been made yet. Also, the Yankees have not committed to taking a pinch-runner such as Bronson Sardinha, although Joe Torre has mentioned the possibility. If they decide to take an extra pitcher, then add Ramirez, Ohlendorf or Britton.

Anybody else have thoughts, either what they believe the roster will be or what it should be?

Where's Bruney?

I'd put Ohlendorf on it

Bruney -- at home.

Roy wants Gagne on that list, too.

Doesn't much matter, cause we're gonna take you 3-0: Indian Style!!!!

Let's just say you're going to get scalped!

CC and carmona for 4. Not that were going to need 4!

See ya Wednesday!!!!!

I was only kidding about Bruney.

If the Yanks get the 5 games in 8 days:

Starters
Wang
Pettitte
Clemens/Moose.

I'd start Wang in Game 1 because then he can come back and pitch Game 4 at the Stadium on normal rest. That would leave Pettitte for the deciding game should it get to 5.

I'd rather have Moose go if Clemens can't because Moose already beat the Tribe when the Yanks were in Cleveland back in August.

The Pen:
Mo
Joba
Vizciano
Farnsworth
Hughes
Villone
Veras
Ohlendorf
Moose (if he doesn't get a start).

I want 9 guys in the pen. I'll sacrifice Sardhina and go with 5 outfielders.

Chief Ya-Hoo?

It's "Chief Wa-hoo".

Man, you can't even get that right. LOL

Just don't use your head to bang the war drum! You don't want to scramble whatever brains that you have left.

I think he keeps Ian Kennedy on, and that would push Sardinha off.

(Unless Kennedy's back is shot.)

Ed,
Kennedy's back is hurting, plus he has reached his innings limit so I don't think we'll see him. I like Ohlendorf and wouldn't mind seeing him on the roster.

Hey Stick: If we're putting Gagne on the roster for Roy, shouldn't we put Ted Lilly and Joe Kennedy on there for Anthony?

How 'boutcha Ant?

Okay whatever you say, Chief Yahoo. Why don't you take this blanket I have left over from the U.S. Army barracks ca. 1850...

Kat: I would say that you are right on the money. If Vizcaino can't make it then Britton because of his experience with Baltimore and Yanks.

I don't believe Edwar and Jose are interchangeable. Edwar is a pitcher who can be reached easily with OK speed but the changeup has not fooled many hitters of late. Look fastball, he's hittable. I would stay with Bronson in this series more than likely Cleveland takes the extra day. So we get the rest also. Bronson has tools to play and appears very relaxed. He may be the surprise to the playoffs with impact with limited appearances.

Dancing on the grave of a player like Gagne, can come back to "haunt" the Yanks. Better save your "chuckles" till after all is "said and done". Between Duncan and Sardinha, the better defensive player should get the nod, and a RP added to the roster. The Yankee outfield defense in LF and RF is a major concern. Both Abreu and Matsui are "spotty" out there, and even Damon has trouble retreating in LF. If the Yanks have a lead after 7, it's pitching and defense that are the order of the day.

I agree "whole-heartedly," Roy. This is sure to "stir" up some bad "karma" with the "baseball-gods." Besides, for the same "reason" why one shouldn't "mess" with Texas, it isn't "polite" to pick on the mentally "challenged."

We haven't "seen" Sardinha all "season" now we're going to put "him" in the "OF" during a "playoff" game? I don't "get" that at all.
I would keep "Shelley" on the "roster" because he has "power" from the "right side" and can be a good "pinch" hitting "alternative" to Betemit.

Jim, that was a "welcomed" analysis. "Kudos" to you. And not the "candy" bar.

Do you guys remember the football player that got hurt in week 1?

Look at this video by NBC out here in Phoenix.

http://www.breitbart.tv/?p=6137

Jim,

"You're" "a" "meanie".

John "G",
"what" are you "talking" about? I have done "nothing" wrong! HAHAHAHA

jeez having a real job sucks. is it happy hour yet?

sorry, "happy" hour

John "G",
That "video" was so "wrong"!!
Damn "funny" but "wrong"!

"Done" nothing "wrong"?

"You" and these "other" "Wa-hoos" (or is it "ya-hoos"), keep "picking" on "Roy's" use of "quotation" "marks".

"This" has just got to "stop".

Hey Chief!

I like our Indian a lot better than your Indians!

I can see the headlines in the Plain Dealer now,
"Chief Joba Scalpums Tribe"

John "G",
"You" must be "butter" because "you" are on a "roll"!!

KAT

I think your projections are very close to being a reality. My big problem is that Farnsworthless is still here. I don't trust him one bit in a meaningful situation!

John (not John G.) - I saw your post on the previous thread. Wanted to make sure you know I read things back. I've always been pro-Cashman and anti-Torre. I think it's a "stat-head" thing. I asked EJ Fagan about why Torre loves Veras and he gave a pretty honest response along the lines of, "he kind of sees him as a veteran when compared to the others and that 97 mph fastball helps, but it's odd since Britton has real experience with Baltimore." Then added, "there really is no logic with Torre."

I loved it as an anti-Torre guy. The thing is, I was once a pro-Girardi guy, but I am concerned with how he handles young starting pitchers (got a lot of flack for it while managing Florida). So I don't know what the right choice is. I wish I did.

To me, it has to be Britton over Veras and Gonzalez over Sardinha. Let me recap Sardinha's year for everyone:

He looked hot in spring training, but then came up way short while playing for SWB. So much so that the last time I saw him in person was in Trenton. He went 0-4 that night and just didn't seem to have it. By no means did I find myself saying, "boy, this kid really should be moving up and fast. Let's get him on the big league roster and use him in the playoffs."

If I was going to use someone for speed and that was the intent of the Yanks, it should've been Gardner. That guy can really run, though at times his ability to read a play was questionable, so that did limit him. I'm not sure Sardinha can figure things out much better though, so he'll be relying on Bowa to tell him what to do.

One of the guys at work gave it to me.

I'm not making fun of the guy that got hurt. I hope and pray that he gets better real fast!

But, that was a funny mixup. I thought that it was a goof at first, but it's actual footage from NBC out here in the Desert.

The dust storms must have gotten into these fools' brains.

I guess the suttlety in the joke about using smallpox infected blankets as a weapon went over everyone's collective heads. Oh well, I still love my US history.

Or maybe it wasn't funny.

I guess not. "we" still have our "quotes." Jim, where's Rick?

Atticas' life is over now!

He's gotta work for a living.

He just started and he's looking for happy hour already?

Man, you've got about 40 million more Fridays to go!

Unless you become a high powered attorney defending OJ or something. The you can cut that in 1/2 and retire at 35.

John G and Atticas,
Be careful what you wish for. O.J.'s high powered attorney made millions alright, but it's hard to spend his money from his current location (six feet under).

Atticas: Rick posted right before you did...you must have ESPN or something!

Kat,

We can't have Veras on this roster. I know you added him because of Torre's fondness of him-which I have no idea where it comes from. While he throws hard, he doesn't throw strikes. You can't have guys in the playoffs who arent reliable throwing strikes. That includes Bruney.

I also don't think we need the extra OF-I'd rather have the arm. We don't pinch hit and it's not like Sardinia is a speed demon out there. If that was the case, where is Brett Gardner? Wouldn't he fill that role better?

Yanksfanmc: I think we're completely on the same page right now. Did you read my post at 4:13?

Where is Ian Kennedy ... is he hurt or getting married? Why isn't he on the roster?

Also I am looking over the roster and I don't see Ted Lilly, Rick Ankiel, Scott Spezio, Josh Hamilton, Joe Kennedy and Eric Gagne. And I am pretty happy about that. Even I am starting to hate them!

I am off to Key West, Fla. and I am so excited. I have never been there!

Maybe I will see Larry, FLA.

I always liked his posts.

I am kind of baseball-ed out with the NL scenario ... what if there is a three way tie for the Wild Card?

Peavy (uber-Christian) vs. Philip Humber for all the marbles ...

What if the Yanks tie Boston? Is that possible?

I hope the Yanks will it all ... why not? They are the best team since May if not the All Star break ...

It will be a great October for sure ...

How come the American Indians don't like the Tomahawk chop as done by Atlanta Braves fans ...?

But you can do that exact same motion while playing their slot machines at the casino and them rich in the process ...

I am confused!

Ant: Your mindless babble is giving me a headache.

I'm certain you won't see Larry in Key West.

The lack of knowledge you posess baffles me.

Why don't you go back to being an Angels fan? We don't need you on the bandwagon.

Not if larry sees him first, LOLOL ;-)

I heard that the Yanks are putting their "A" lineup on the field tonight.

I'm guessing that Abreu, Jeter, A-Rod, Melky are in there tonight.

Fun with stats. Name that Yankee pitcher:

Over their last 5 starts, these are their numbers (answers to be revealed during the game):

The numbers are in the following order:
IP/Start|ERA|WHIP|K/9

A: 5.93|2.73|1.18|5.46
B: 6.07|4.45|1.58|6.23
C: 6.60|3.27|1.39|4.91
D: 5.27|3.76|1.41|4.44
E: 5.40|4.67|1.48|6.33

Just based on this sample size, you would pitch these guys as:
Game 1 A
Game 2 C
Game 3 D
Game 4 B
Bullpen E

Who do you think is who?

I guessing

A is Mussina

B is Clemens

C is Wang

D is Pettite

and
E is Hughes

A - Hughes
B - Wang
C - Pettitte
D - Moose
E - Clemens

Ya-hoo,
you want to win "Indian style?" Being someone who has taken a history class in my life, I think that we as a blog should support your hopes that the Indians fare as well as their namesake.
Yanks in 4

I heard that the Red Sox shut Buchholz down for the remainder of the season.

Hey Sully- You guys should of had the "Buchholz Rules".

To Ant Colony: You won't see me in Key West for I'm in Sarasota, Fl. I have never been there but have heard mixed reviews but you enjoy.

HYD whatever the right response is the your question. The Yankees have to have their hitting shoes on.

I know that you do accounting work but do you approach some things without a numerical state of mind and play without a safety net?

The treatment of Buchholz along with DiceK and Wakefield being worn down has made me so angry because of these stupid arbitrary pitch counts.

A-HUGHES
B-PETTITE
C-WANG
D-MOOSE
E-CLEMENS

SULLY
YOU MUST MEAN OKAJIMA...WAKE IS NOT WORN DOWN HE JUST STINKS. BUT HOW CAN YOU BE ANGRY WITH HILARIOUS MANNY BACK?

Is Giambi pitiful or what!

Since he sucks at the plate, I'm guessing that Torre put him on the playoff roster for defensive purposes.

Ahhh Ben Dover is back. it was getting too smart in here.

Hey Sully,

On that link that I sent you there's a selection for MLB Mosaic. It's listed under the daily schedule. If you look over to the right a bit you'll see Windows Media Player. If you have that installed on your PC, you can click on that link and you'll get the mosaic.
You won't have any sound, but you'll be able to watch the games.
I forgot to mention that to you.

Is anybody out there?
Anybody?
Anybody?

Thanks man

I'll try it

On to other threads, John G.

JUST KEEPING YOU HONEST SULLY YOU KNOW HOW YOU LIKE TO BLUR THE LINES.

And where pray tell did I "blur the line"?

Just curious

I agree. 11 pitchers with Sardinha as a pinch runner. This could come in handly late in the game. Only change I would make is to replace Veras with Ohlendorf. I think he has much better stuff, keeps the ball down and throws strikes.

Will be interesting to see how Hughes doese out of the pen and whether Torre will get him an inning on Sunday (however that would only be on 2 days rest).

If I had to choose between the final spot of the roster I leave Briton, because he had good numbers at BAL last year, plus his goods numbers on AAA and MLB this years, if he throws strike he will get outs for Torre.

Veras and Ramirez has problems throwing strike, Veras overpower his fastb, so that brings so many hits when his looking to get on the zone, and when ramirez get behing on the count, the batters known that he will come with a change or with a low 90's or up 80's fb not more than that. I Think that postseason will fit very big for those kids.

The same for Ross, I think he doesn't have the experience at MLB, he only throw 6.1 IP, that's not enough.

I'll stay with sardinha has a pinch runner that is important at playoff remember Roberts with BOSTON 2004 it was so important has ortiz and all that people coming from the bench to run.
