Yankees close to clinching

The Yankees are close to clinching their playoff spot. They lead 12-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Strong chance they will be facing the Indians in the first round, as the Angels' chances of having the best record in the AL are very slim. If either Boston or Cleveland has the best record, the Yankees will face the Indians in the first round.

Derek Jeter: a triple shy of the cycle tonight
Jorge Posada: three hits, three RBIs
Robinson Cano: five RBIs
Doug Mientkiewicz: four hits, tying a career-high
Chien-Ming Wang: six innings, two earned runs

The only worry is that Luis Vizcaino gave up a two-run homer to the second batter he faced, and has had a rough September. He says his shoulder is OK.

Gloom, I see you got involved in the feel good story of the year earlier this evening. And you are a red sox fan yourself, and a lame one to add. What got me was the "what have the yankees done since 2000, anyway?" Well an easy answer would be made the playoffs at least one more time than your red sox (as the yankees have done past 13 consecutive seasons now). Gloom, what have the red sox done since 2004? Better yet, what have they done prior to 2004? You good with baseball history, Gloom? Need a refresher?

Keeping in mind where the Yankees were on July 4th (2 games under .500 and 8 games out of the wild card)... consider my hat tipped!

and to add sully, a great second half of urgent baseball. its going to be fun.

CONGRATS YANKS

Its so nice to see all those guys smiling. Grats Yankees. What a regular season! Now the fun begins.

yankees still not making playoffs, baseball tonight crew?

Now we can exhale.

Step one: check...

____________

And I hope they are as happy as they look!

Yankees with confidence
Angels been strong all year
Indians with the best record
Red Sox with their lineup back

And NOT ONE NL Playoff spot wrapped up?

This October should kick buttocks

I don't usually post on the Yankees blog, but I just have to tonight.

After hearing what the bastardo Gary Sheffield said about Joe Torre earlier this season, how sweet it is that Joe Torre does arguably his best job as Yankee manager in 13 years and they beat out Sheffield's team to do it!!!

So sweet, lets bring #27 back home boys.

Does anyone have extra crow. I'd like to ship some to Buster Olney to eat live on the set. I don't where or when he played ball to have categorically picked Detroit over the Yankees. These NY pundits and blowhards just make me sick sometimes. He used to say, I can't pick against the Yankees and then he got regular on TV and started to beleive his press clippings.
The Division is in reach and we are the NYY--Kings of the F'n Hill.

YFL

Now I can sleep tonight!
Whew.

See you all in the morning.

Great win, obviously ...

Still I wonder about this crazy season ... and all I have learned from watching and from all of your great posts ...

Menky hit so well with Minny ... what happened and can he hit like that again?

How do the players communicate off the field between English, Spanish, Taiwanese and Japanese. Do they try and help one another learn ... they must ... it would be interesting to know about this ...

And finally ... you never know what is going to happen, so why predict or stress about it ...

Looks like Giambi and Clemens and Farns are not well ...

And that Mussina really only needed competition ...

Viz's shoulder must be hurting. Edwar needs more than a changeup ...

Joba will be in the pen for the future.

We should have signed Troy Percival for peanuts and made him the seventh inning guy ...

About Sheffield, as Kevin Davidoff pointed out, blacks were replaced by Hispanics on the Yanks, just as 80 percent of the whites on the Mets were run out of town (Bannister, Jacobs, Benson and so many others in Omars purge.)

Maybe Gary does have a point, but to say it that way, when Torre's brother is so sick and he has such stress ... that was not wise ... or kind or nice.

We are not our mistakes.

Torre has a lot of class ...

Again, a great win ... now do we play Cleveland or the Angels?

Hi Ant!

I'll cut to the chase:
The Tribe.

Well John G. I don't know anything about the Indians this year!

I don't like Carmona, he is an AJ Burnett type who will get in your kitchen ... and not with Cheerios.

Oh well ...

And Sully, we spotted you Igawa for Lilly ... that's like a 15 game difference ... imagine if we had Lilly all year? We might have won the division by 3 games or so. But who can say, I mean Igawa over Lilly is such a sane choice. I am sure Lou Pinella is right now saying "Oh how I wish we could trade Lilly Pad for Hello Kitty!"

It was a fun season ... I really learned so so much from all of you ...

Ant!

Off to bed ...

Good Night Ant! :-)

See you tomorrow, my friend.

The Sox and the Yankees should be resting players left and right.

Both teams have 4 games to line up the rotation and give some guys a break.

Compare that to the National League where not ONE contending team can relax going into Thursday!

Wow...You really think so Sully. You really know your $hit.
What happens with the Sox fans in here when they get bounced from the playoffs? No pitching and no hitting makes for a short playoff.
Maybe Sully man will go out and find a job.
