Joe Torre and Brian Cashman had lunch with George Steinbrenner, his sons Hal and Hank Steinbrenner, and his son-in-law Felix Lopez today. Sounds like there's a good chance "The Boss" will be at tonight's game.
Roger Clemens played catch, but no serious throwing. The plan is for him to remain in Tampa while the team goes to Baltimore. They would rather rest him for the playoffs than risk anything. Said Cashman: "Hopefully we won't need him in Baltimore," meaning, hopefully, they will have clinched a playoff spot by then.
Here is the lineup:

I want to see a solid 7 from Wang tonight. Get the lead to Joba and Mo and pop the corks.
not to be verbose John G....but "seven solid" and "Wang" used in the same sentence is a little bit funny...lewd..but funny.
Yankees aren't making the playoffs--the Tigers will.
Cas,
Your mind is in the gutter. LOL
I see that we have a troll amongst us.
Isn't there some bridge that you have to guard my 10 eyed green friend?
sonofabitch!
That pitch was right over the plate!
His pitches are up in the zone.
FonGoul
No team wants to be the one that loses for another team to celebrate. The Rays and the Jays are doing great!
Yankees Suck,
So, how are ya?
It seems like it's just you and me here posting so we might as well talk to each other.
If Minnesota wins tonight, somebody better send a case of Dom Perinone to Santana.
Is it me or has Santana not been Santana this season? He's giving up a lot of homers and seems to be in trouble in every innings.
The Yanks need to get something started, I'm getting a little bit impatient here.
He hasn't been himself, Jim. His ERA is over 3 and his record is 15-13.
This guy with his 6.43 ERA and 1-5 record is no-hitting us.
Are we tight or what?
4-3 Minnesota and the Tigers have 2nd and 3rd.
Wang stinks on the road.
JETER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, Yankees Suck, then take your wang at home if you like it there. I didn't think you really cared where you got it, as long as it was from behind.
Sox spank'in the A's! A seveteen hit 11 run barrage (and I don't think they're done?) Looks like the magical number will be One at the end of the night!
Beckett goes for 21 to clinch the AL East tomorrow night.
Do you think he can do it?
Come on Tigers! You'e only in the 3rd. Lots 'o time to stay in the race for one more night of making Yankee fans squirm!!!!!
DER-EK JET-ER CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP
Gloom,
If you're a Red Sox fan, congratulations on winning the division.
If you're a Mets fan,
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Your team blows!!!!!!!
Hi Jim,
I like you! You're a funny guy. What game are you enjoying the most?
Do you think the Yankees will find a way to blow another one tonight and if so what flunky from the bullpen is going to do the honors?
It's going to be fun to see the Yankees after clawing their way into the playoffs as the cast-away wildcard. Only to lose to either Cali or Cleveland in the 1st round!
I'm going to enjoy that the most!
Shhhhhhh
(whispering): I'm a Red Sox fan!
Best team in baseball, soon to have the best record in baseball (by the end of the night!
Thanks John G. You're not so bad either!
Gloom,
I am enjoying the Yankee game right now, thanks. I think the Yankees will win tonight, I'm almost certain of it.
You see, as a Yankee fan, I don't watch other teams games or hang out on their blogs talking trash whenever they lose, it's just not my way, but whatever works for people is cool w/ me.
I'm also a realist. I have said all along that the Yanks have problems with their starting pitching and their bullpen, but the schedule in the playoffs will allow the Yanks to limit the appearances of the weaker pitchers and that may not bode well for the other teams. I guess we'll see in about a week.
My name is John, not Jim.
You didn't tell me who you root for so I'm at a disadvantage.
When did the WC become a castaway? I don't get that one so toy'll have to explain it to me.
Since 2002, there's been a WC team in the series every year. But, since you're an astute baseball fan, you probably already know that.
As far as what flunky from the pen is going to blow it? You're guess is as good as mine so I'll leave that one up to you. But I can't argue with you on that as the facts support you.
Com'on, you can tell me who you root for. I won't pick on you.
hey it's been a great summer hasn't it?
More so for the Yanks. I'm really glad they got their sh*t together and made a run. I was afraid I was going to have a boring summer! (I love to worry and complain)(I'm just not complete if I can't)
There are days when I wish I was one of those dorks I work with who don't care about sports at all, their lives seem so much more stress free then mine.
Worry and complain....yep, that's sports for ya!
You're a Sox fan. I just saw your post.
You have a good team and I won't trash them. I have too much respect for them to do that. Besides, my friends Casual and Sully are Sox fans.
Your pen hasn't been too sharp as of late. If Okajima gets healthy, then you have a great 1-2 punch out there.
I will tell you though that you are welcome here as a Sox fan, but keep it clean and don't trash talk unless you are trash talked to.
Sorry if that sounded weird.
Look at Sully's and Casual's posts. They hate the Yanks as you do, but they show respect for the great organization that they are. You do have to admit that, as painful as that may be. It shows maturity, my friend.
If you do that, we'll have a lot of fun going back and forth and then we can gloat at each other when we play each other in the ALCS. :-)
Sorry John,
Jim A is the one with a hair across his as*. I won't make that mistake twice.
Jimmy,
I'm watching the Sox on HD while I tune into Game Day to root against the Evil Empire.
I don't know what I like better:
When the Red Sox win or the Yankees lose?
Boy that's a tough call.
I just like to get on and go back and forth with ya. I'm not a bad person. I just think it's fun to talk to you Yankee fans now that you're just regular fans with a regular team with problems just like every other team, but a BIG giant worthless playroll. That's what bothers me the most.
There should really be a salary cap in baseball.
All teams allowed to spend the same ammount of money on players. Don't you think that would make baseball better?
A level playing field for all.
Uh..Gloom, have you seen the Sox payroll? They are a FA signing away from equaling the Yanks payroll. Keep in mind, the Yanks in the next couple of years will be rid of the following salaries: Giambi, Mussina, Clemens, maybe Matsui.
Did you see what Tom Werner just did? He bought a $16M house and is tearing it down!
Funny Red Sox fans again.
Unlike RSN, the Yanks will be playing in October for the 13th straight season.
You guys should probably act like you've been there before - even though we all know you haven't.
I guess they are extra excited since they didn't play in October last season and finished in THIRD PLACE.
Have fun with LAA because they are going to beat Boston.
I don't hate the Yankees. I respect the Yankees.
I just wish baseball was fair for all teams across the country. So all fans could enjoy what we enjoy in Boston and NY (but then they probably don't have the pain we have either from following these 2 teams?)
That's all!
I won't talk trash anymore. I'm sorry if I did. I just think it's funny with a $200 million payroll that these Yankee teams haven't won anything since the the year 2000
Yeah, and a $150M payroll like the Red Sox had last season and didn't even make the playoffs.
Enough of the payroll garbage. I guess the owner of RSN is doing okay since he's buying a $16M mansion just to tear it down.
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/sports/14200469/detail.html
I've had enough of RSN complaining about payroll. Such hypocrites.
Jim,
I have seen the Sox payroll. New ownership has come in and are just playing your game. If you can't beat them join them.
Like I said: I would have no problem with every team spending the same amount of money on a their team. That's fair. Then when the Sox are in last place. I can say: Hey everyone is playing by the same rule. We just suck.
Sox win Viper 11-5 3 1/3 up. 4 by the end of the night.
magical number: 2
Jim,
That's not talking trash is it? Just stating the facts to Viper who is not begaving.
I just think there are certain markets and owners who don't deserve or to be honest, care to win. Revenue sharing has been great for the game, if we didn't have it the Sox and Yanks would probably have Santana, Willis, Webb etc. on their teams but because our teams supply the others with money, they are able to sign some of their talent. Then you have owners who just pocket the money and don't put it into their teams, which really pisses me off. I wish all teams had to actually burn the money they receive in revenue sharing in their team's payroll.
I feel sorry for some fan bases like Chicago, Cincinnati etc. but they've just been unlucky. The Yanks and to some extent the Sox have proven that the teams with the higher payrolls don't necessarily win. Guys like the jackass in KC kill me though, stuffing his pockets while his team wilts year after year.
It's not the same Gloom as far as payroll goes. It will never be like the NFL, and I'm glad for that. Sometimes football is boring and I LOVE football. Revenue sharing is helping the teams that put those dollars into payroll. Look at the Tigers and the Royals as examples. The Royals had a better season than past years because they went out and made some signings. The teams that don't use the money for salary should not get a single dime!
The Yanks have a huge payroll true, but you have to admit that they didn't break the bank this year. Cashman didn't bite on bad signings (except for Igawa, but salary-wise, that cost the Yanks 20 mil), and he didn't trade the farm at the deadline. The huge payroll will come down as some of these guys end their Yankee careers like Giambi. Some of the other large contracts like Jeter's are fine with me since he came up through the system. He's homegrown as is Posada and Mo. They deserve the big bucks.
I think that the Red Sox went a little overboard with the spending this past off season. Lugo, Drew Matsuzaka to name a few. You guys are getting up there just a bit salary-wise.
Gloom,
I didn't set the trash talking rules, John did. I don't really care if you do or not. I just don't do it because every time I do something bad happens.
I learned that lesson the hard way when I was running my mouth during a high school baseball game (many, many years ago) and then proceeded to strike out with the tying run on third...oh and I made an error at short that let the winning run score. That was the end of my trash talking days. My father said to me after the game "if your glove worked as good as your mouth you guys may have won". That stung!
My Dad told me the SAME THING Jim! LOL.
My trash talking days are a thing of the past. They always find a way to bite you in the kiester!
I'm not the rule maker anyway. I just wanted to give Gloom some advice. he can take it or not, that's up to him and anyone else who wants to talk trash.
I also don't like to kick a guy when he's down. I wouldn't want it done to me.
That's more like it!
8-1!
Just don't bring in Bruney and Ramirez and we should (gulp) win it tonight.
Besides, I got pissed off yesterday at, as Marianne calls him, Anonymous the Lesser, and I named him the BEE-YATCH!
Childish on my part I know, but he was attacking everyone and I reached my limit.
John,
I hear you, I'm usually telling people to chill out and not get worked up by what people post but once in a while someone posts something that brings out the old sailor in me and I fail to count to 10 before pushing the "post" button. I loved that beeeyyyaaatch stuff yesterday, it was great.
Breathing room! Thanks Yanks!
Gonna go watch the game in my basement for a while so I can yell at the TV without waking the kids up.
Have a great evening guys...I smell Champagne!
It's called being Human, Jim. We always want to take the high road, but sometimes you have to get in the mud with the morons.
Great inning! I feel a little better now and I hope that Wang puts this thing to bed.
Well, I'm going home now, I'll catch the rest of the game there. If we clinch, I'll drop in later on (if my wife doesn't get pissed). Otherwise, I'll see you in the morning.
