No decision expected for several days

The Yankees are not expected to make a managerial hire in the next few days. GM Brian Cashman and club president Randy Levine flew back to New York last night. The Steinbrenners remain in Tampa, but there's been no sign of any of them at Legends Field yet today. (There is a back entrance, which George and Hal usually enter through, but Hank comes in the front, which we can see, generally). The media stakeout will be ending soon for the weekend. It's down to three of us at this point. Everyone else has already gone home.
Looks like the choice between Mattingly and Girardi could drag a while.

The Bosses are putting the Manager position in Cash's hands. Obviously H&H will have final say. But expect Cash to take his time on his suggestion for the job. If he goes with his fav Girardi then he's going against what is perceived as the organization's pref. and if he goes with Mattingly then he's choosing someone he's not 100% on. We'll have to wait until the WS is over. The Yankees haven't even asked MLB about making an announcement today.

Interesting thought on the Managerial opening. Should the Yankees look outside the organization? See link below.

OK, now it's official -- I have to take my vacation IN SUSPENSE. Still no announcement, and the Grillmeister's taking me for an anniversary treat to our favorite secluded romantic hotel -- no TV sets, no cell phones permitted in public areas, and no guests under 12. We spent the first leg of our honeymoon at the Horned Dorset Primavera, the most intimate little paradise in the Caribbean, and nothing less than a return will do him for our 10th. So we'll be walking beside the crashing waves, whale and dolphin watching, and maybe kayaking -- when we're not stuffing ourselves with great food and collapsing amid flowers and birdsong. We hear they do have one computer now for guests who can't wean themselves away, but I have taken a vow. So -- later, guys... it will be all over by the time I'm back. Or maybe I'll just stay there...

Have a GREAT TIME Marianne!

I think they have to make Giradi the manager.

-He already has the experience
-He can handle the NY Media
-He would be accepted by the fans
-Biggest thing is he can help our young pitchers a great deal

I say the Yankees need to approach Donnie and convince him to stay on as the bench coach. This will put some pressure on Girardi to perform since he knows Donnie would be easy to replace him with.

Mattingly may be offended but if they convince him that he needs a little more experience on the bench I think he would do it for the Yanks.

It would be great also keep Pena on board but that may be a little trickier.

Pena would be less trickier than Mattingly

Pena has already intimated that he would want to stay in the Bronx if not named manager.

Mattingly would probably see it as a slight (even though Girardi is a better candidate).

Donnie has noplace to go except back to the horse farm if he leaves the Yankees. Girardi has already turned down one offer (Baltimore) and has probably already told NYY that he won't take the job unless he gets to choose his coaching staff, and they know he'll get plenty of offers to manage against them. Pena stays if they let him.

Only one of those gives any reason for hesitation and 'further consideration' about naming a manager.

Anybody else seeing visions of Southern Californa full of ex-Yankees next year?

McCarthy,

You bring up a lot of good points in your post. However, I believe Mattingly will not be the bench coach if Girardi or Pena get the job.

Mattingly had stated a few times in his interview process that he's ready for the job. He mentioned that he has Torre, Martin and Piniella in him and can handle the day-to-day pressures of the job. He put all of his cards on the table and if he doesn't get the gig, I expect him to bolt.

Pena on the other hand, has come out and said that if he doesn't get the job, he'd like to stay with the Yankees as a coach if another manager's job doesn't come his way.

OYF -

I posted this comment yesturday 3:59 pm so maybe the cooler talk I'm hearing is ok

"from the latest I heard the choice is so hard that they are pondering wether or not to Interview more canidates (maybe if a wildcard surprise come and wows them )

something I said earlier may be actually true.

"The Yankees do not really want another Mr. Popular manager and have to be tongue in cheek if they have to be critical of him. The Torre situation is really making them weary of hiring another manager that may be the same make up.

Grampa,

I don't understand your post. What do you mean?

Too add to this this much is certain.

THERE IS NO CLEAR CUT FAVORITE.

however there is a Safest Favorite the issue is since this is now up to BC (who was not aware of this decision until recent days) to make the choice the issue is do you pick the safest choice or Your BEST choice? There is no clear cut BEST choice but there is a Safest/Favorite choice

Just laughing about the coincidence of rumors about the Angels wanting Rodriguez, the Dodgers wanting Girardi, both being interested in having Torre spend some time in the booth (SoCal loved him as a broadcaster), and the possibilities that these and other straws in the wind about various moves bring to mind.

Girardi is definitely the best choice. I think Hank and Hal know it but want to take their time as to not insult Mattingly.

Hank and hal is letting BC test his true Basball knowledge. Remember what I said he is not exactly Baseball savy and the key thin his contract is up next year

The Steins know who they want, but Bud has "hog tied" em. Cashman is "nobody" now, and this will become obvious at the Winter Meetings. Forget the Safe Choice\Best Choice scenario. They know who they want, but Bud has told them to "hold off" for now.

Off topic... I know I'm not supposed to acknowledge that there are games still being played... but last nights game showed why I think Joba belongs in the pen.

Having two go-to studs out of the pen shortened that game and gave the team that should not be mentioned a win on a day when their bats were dead.

Having the Joba and Mariano show could mean a lot of 6 or 7 inning games for the opposition.

Just saying

I might agree with you, Sully, if we just had the rotation to take care of those six or seven innings of every game that you pass over so lightly.

By the way, for me one of the biggest mistake NYY was not picking up Okajima when he was begging to come to us. You could probably hear me grinding my teeth from California last night.

Not admitting I watched the game or anything.

The Yankees probably had their mind made up before Borowski struck out Posada.

I am guessing they are going with Mattingly and didn't want to insult Girardi nor Pena by just announcing it.

I think letting Girardi go would be a mistake... a bigger mistake than Mattingly, but what do I know?

Caught you NSH!

Have fun Marianne!

Why drag this out Hankie ...

Hire Girardi

Keep Pena as the mentor, teacher, good guy, Spanish translator and go to guy if things fall apart.

He is a good soldier so that is a no brainer. Don't alienate him or patronize him.

Keep Mattingly too. He is a good Yankee. It's a team thing. Like Tom Landry and all his great assistant coaches like Reeves and Ditka and the rest.

You need a bunch of good coaches.

Bowa shrugs and alienates like Al Gore in the 2000 debate. I saw him on the mound with the Phillies. What a terrible way to show up the players ... The players hated him.

But I don't like all this "who is the best" talk ... who is the best. Self love is a lie. We should build others up. Love others. Love God ... and not reserve so much love for ourselves or being better than XYZ. To try to be better than we ourselves were is ok. To constantly be "better" than someone else is probably a sin in some way. It's about ego.

Mattingly, Pena and Girardi are all good choices.

Men like Showalter and LaRussa alienate others ... thinking they invented the game. They are rude sad to say, like Clemens and Farns, with the media and you can't have that. Not in NYC.

Again just find the best damned person ...

Look at Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith. Kevin Thomas of the LA Times went insane because they BOTH said their valued their Christian faith over their race or being the first black coaches to meet in the Super Bowl.

Kevin Thomas just couldn't wrap himself around that ... it just blew his mind.

Hire Lovie and Tony Dungy if you can ... what great men! They know what's most important! If Tony Pena is that good of a man hire him over anyone else.

Lombardi looked for character first.

Girardi cared for his mother when she was sick so that is also a good reason to like him. People who abandon their families can't be trusted no matter what.

Way to go Red Sox ... looks like they may wrap things up soon.

Just my two cents!

Hey NSH, where in California are you?

I had been living in the SF Bay Area, but since starting this new job I am in LA.

By the way, off topic again, my co-worker Hench references me in his Fox Sports collumn today

(it has nothing to do with the Red Sox nor Yankees)

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/7377144

I don't see why Mattingly shouldn't want to join Girardi's staff if he is hired. Who else is going to make Donnie an offer at this point? I don't think there are teams that are even considering him for ANY job right now so he is going to have to put in more time as a coach if he wants to become a manager. Preferably he would go to the minors as a manager but something tells me he will not do that.

Sully, sorry my wording was bad, I meant you could probably hear my teeth grinding from all the way out their in Calif where you are...

Haven't been out for several years, last time I was in Southern California I felt like San Diego was just so clean and exterior-decorated that I'd be afraid to step on the sidewalks and get them dirty.

Sully,
Were the Red Sox bats dead or deadened last night? that seems to be the crux of the situation with pitching. Shall the starter for the Rockies be given credit for pitching well or did the Red Sox just hit poorly?
If the Yankees are already down 6 runs in the 7th and 8th inning because their starter sucked, well then Joba in the 8th doesn't really do much for them.

I do see your point though and agree that Joba would be excellent in the 'pen as a mainstay, but I'm hoping the Yanks can find other options amongst their young guys.

Funny story about my co-worker (Sox fan) who was at the game last night. I sent him an email congratulating him that he got to see "Boyz II Men" live and in person and that had to make the price of the tickets completely worthwhile and while he was replying to me on his beloved new toy, a Blackberry 8Somethingorother, somebody bumped his arm and his toy fell out of his hand and....plop! It landed right in his beer and hasn't worked since.

I tried to cheer him up with this:

Tickets to the game: $2,000
Hotel: $400
Gas and tolls: $100
Blackberry: $425

Watching your team win a world series game....priceless.

He's still mad about the phone though.

Ant,
Bowa is actually waiting on the Yankees to make a choice before he commits to the Mariners. I think if it's Mattingly, he may stay and apply for the bench coach position.
You can't blame him for finding a job, he's no youngster and is probably not filthy rich like players are today. Plus, he came here to work with Torre and maybe he doesn't like the way Torre's departure was handled, it doesn't make him a bad person, perhaps he is just a loyal person.
It's a tough call with him but I do agree, he wore out his welcome as a manager with his players very quickly.

Jim A,

LOL!!

Mastercard should make a commercial about that.

I think it was a combination of dead and deadened.

I think they were coming out of their shoes to take cuts against the guy. Pedrioa suddenly thinks he is Jim Rice and is trying to launch balls over the monster and they weren't waiting the kid out.

By the 4th and 5th they started taking pitches again and going back to their game plan, they started getting walks and getting on base... and they won the game.

As for Joba... it can be a two way street. Yeah a lousy start would make a bullpen worthless.

Then again a lousy bullpen would waste a solid start.

And I ask again... if it is so simple to find a solid 8th inning guy, why haven't the Yankees done it over the last 7 years?

I heard there's going to be one decision made by late Sunday night:

The REEEEEEDDDDDD SSSSSSOOXXXX WWWIIINNNN!

Your 2007 World Champions!

Enjoy the thump'in in Colorado this weekend!

Don't root too hard against us.

Your wishes against us are futile!

plus you could really hurt what little brain power you have left in that little noggin of yours!

See you at the parade!

SOX RULE

while you sit there and DROOL

2 in 4 years! Life is good in BOston and across RED SOX NATION!

We're everywhere!

good work Jim A

(Sully reads Torre's Bat Boy's post and shakes his head.)

Man... this won't make my life easier

Holiday doesn't like touching the base with his hands...

Sox Suk!!! And don't you forget it. You punks were RELIEVED we didn't get past the Injuns because you knew a butt kickin' was coming. Enjoy your 2nd WS ring (in about 88 years). Who gives a rats a$$!
By the way, I believe we all may have missed something that could give a clue as to who the next manager will be:
Don't you think it will be difficult to get rid of Guidry? Gator was at least as popular as Mattingly, and it will not be a popular decision to replace him (but he must be replaced). Just like Gator working hard, but not getting it done as a "top of the line" pitching coach, the same might come true with Mattingly - getting the job done, but not a "top of the line" manager. Sentiment has to be left at the front door, Girardi should be the guy.

Just wanted to let all of the Yankees fans know that if we see your football Giants in any game this year.I promise only to throw 5 TD's at most to win the game...I understand you are all depressed (cause the yankess are GAY) and I can't be responsible for any suicides!...sit back and watch real baseball ladies

Bat boy,
Enjoy the victory and the spoils that come with it. Even if those spoils mean talking trash and acting like you had something to do with it. "We" and "us" usually mean you are on the team or in the organization...which is it?

Tom Brady,
I know the bus just dropped you off and you are a little amped up right now, but take off your backpack, have a glass of milk and a cookie and don't let your mom catch you playing with the computer without her permission again.

I hate the Red Sox!

Too bad that Colorado shot their load. But then again, the national league blows!

I agree Mike. Leave sentiment at the door. Get the RIGHT GUY FOR THE JOB!

Hey Tom,

You meet her sisters yet?

Hey Tom,

You meet her sisters yet?

Yeah, they're all amped up now, but with if they blow this thing, watch the "Fran-Coma" comments come out in force.

I hope that Manny doesn't get lost playing a regulation size left field.

That's why Tom Brady wears a Yankee dome.

Nothing wrong with rockin the Yankee gear nomsayin...

Jim BO.....
You are a huuuuge Douche.
I will send joe torre Some congrats cookies..I am so happy for him tat he has finally freeing himself of the biggest choke artists of all time..
P.S

Time to let Jeter go..He is over the hill..

Gerad,

Not a Yankee Fan..at This point who honestly is?? You can't be..they aren't
"easy to love"

Boston Comes through BABY!!!!.
2 in 4
2 in 4
Yankee fans Hineys are VERY SOAR

Tom Brady,
So what's next? Are you going to start talking about the Celtics pre-season record now?

You, Mr. Brady, have gone on record as saying you are a YANKEE FAN so don't try to run your mouth here (you cheating SOB!)

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO TELL YOUR SON!!

I am a Celtics fan!!!!!!...We should have three championship banners hung in Boston this year.
God is good, Gisele is great.

Figures that besides not showering, shaving, or losing weight, the RSN doesn't have proper "racial" etiquette either. Typical trailer trash from Boston. Change your drawers and tell Gerty to shave off the moustache. Lestoil should get those skid marks out of the jeans, which were left there when you THOUGHT you might play the Yankees instead of the HGH Boys. Pathetic spoon-in-the-mouth spoiled Baby Boomer offspring. Where's my belt?

I'm sitting this debate out.

I'm laughing my butt off at these desperate Red Sox fans who are begging for our attention. Baseball means nothing to them without the Yankees fans around. They think they matter to us the way we matter to them. They don't see that we are defending ourselves when they harass us but we don't obsess over them. They are just to damn stupid to get it.

Who gives a rat's a$$ about the Red Sox right now. I wish they sweep by Sunday so we can find out who our new manager is. That's all Yankees fans care about -- not a second WS win in the last 100 years for the demonic soul-selling roid shooting cheating Red Sox.

Red Sox fans will sell their children's souls to the devil and offer up their mother's heart and brains in a Satanic ritual to win another World Series and beat the Yankees...man they are a frightening bunch of lowlifes.

I must admit. I watched 4 innings of both WS games. The Red Sox's look so quietly confidednt. I don't see a dynasty in this team because there are some parts which are getting older but they do remind me of one confident team. The Rockies on the surface appear calm but are showing that you have to loss the big one before you learn how to win the big one.

I believe Giardi is the clear choice to manage the team. Mattingly would serve himself well if he took the bench coach job. Its better than OJT in Columbus or Tampa where most guys get their teeth cut.

Joba would be a great setup man if we could not find someone to prep for Mo but I would love to see Wang, Pettitte, Hughes, Joba and Kennedy. It would be very interesting because these guys can pitch and the exictement of watching them develop would be priceless especially under a manager who can handle the job.

Correction: Scranton not Columbus; a year behind.

Please spare us with the "we don't care about the Red Sox"..it is all BS. Half the time I read these blogs you guys are yapping about the Sox, even when they aren't playing the Yankees, and you are mad as hell the Yankees aren't playing ball right now. Just admit it for once...you care what the Sox are doing and the the Sox care what the Yankees are doing. Just the way it is people! Always will be.....
