« AROD OPTS OUT! | Main | Girardi offered job »

What a crazy night

This night has been nuts for sure. Mainly the last three hours or so. It seems Joe Girardi is going to be the next Yankees manager. All signs are pointing that direction, though the Yankees have not confirmed that.
But the absolute news and stunner is that Alex Rodriguez opted out --- during the final game of the World Series!! Longtime Newsday writer and now SI.com writer Jon Heyman was first to report the opting out. The Yankees have said for many months that they would be out if Rodriguez opted out, but everyone figured it would go right down to the deadline (10 days after the end of the World Series). The Rangers, who originally signed Rodriguez to the 10-year, $252-million contract, were to pay more than $21 million over the next three seasons, which is why the Yankees have been so adamant they would give Rodriguez an extension but not negotiate with him if he opted out. We'll see if they stick to that.

Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, saidd by phone last night in confirming the optout: "Alex called me today and instructed me to send notice to the Yankees to that effect."
Boras said he had informed the Yankees in writing, but also spoke with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman at about 10:30 p.m and that Cashman said he appreciated the call.

Boras emphasized that Rodriguez was uncertain about the direction the Yankees are going, with potential free agents Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte. "Essentially he just didn't feel he could make any decision in the short period of time because he wanted to know the composition of the team," Boras said. "He wanted to know what Rivera and Posada and Andy Pettitte were going to do."

Here's the link to my full story. We'll have much more tomorrow.http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-sparod102807,0,5153414.story

Looks like the Rocket made the wrong move and went to the wrong team.

If I were the Yankees. I would fire the whole line up and go out and get some good pitching.

Bashing the crap out of the ball obviously didn't take you where you needed to be in the end.

Beckett, Schill, Dice-K & Lester!

Pitching, pitching and more pitching!

GREAT pitching in Boston wins them another World Chamionship!

Roger Clemens........Boston didn't need him and neither did you!

Alex, good riddance!!

I kind of think this is still a ploy and more of the beginning of negotiations than the endgame...yet. There is no other team that can match the Yankees in giving A-Rod what he wants, besides all the clauses in Boras's contracts...

Also to do this at the time that probably the only other team in baseball to match a Yankees offer, when they are celebrating a World Series victory, will pretty much poison any negotiations with the Red Sox. The only teams that may be interested or have the money are LAA Angels, maybe the Giants, the Cubs are already to the hilt, and are trying to find a buyer like Cuban, and the two others, would be the Rangers with Hicks deep pockets, (well he is already paying some of his salary) and the White Sox, if Reinsdorf is willing to add $30 million to his already bloated $100 million salary that his team can't afford.

The Yankees should accept this for the opportunity it gives them to rebuild the team. Since A-Rod came here, this has been a team that has scrambled during the season and failed to deliver at the plate and on the mound in the postseason.

Yes, I'd like Rivera, Posada, and Pettitte back, but I won't die if they don't re-sign. I don't think we lose as much as some think without A-Rod if we use the $ to sign pitching. Say you lose 80 rbi without A-Rod (a decent third baseman will still drive in 70 runs). Give me pitching that allows fewer runs, and the difference is moot, especially if they get a first baseman who can hit and field.

A-Rod will do well personally elsewhere, but boy, will he screw up a team's payroll. That, in turn, will affect his chances at a ring. I think he made a mistake, and I bet he would have made at least as much if he had stayed here, with a better chance at a ring. I'll miss his (regular sseason) bat but not his needy nature.

Finally, we're spoiled. Some of us fail to see the 1996-2001 run for the exceptional one it was. It's not been fun rooting for this team in recent years, in part because the expectations are so high, the performance so predicatable, and the results so frustrating. Until this team returns to investing in pitching, it will go nowhere.

Yanks are a sinking ship........First Torre, now AROD and next up is Donnie as he heads back to the farm....Ynaks are now a joke....Can the great Joe Girardi bat 4th?? Gerardi will be canned before July....nice job Cashman you loser

Good Riddens A-Rod. I hope he goes to Boston because he is a loser and no team will ever win a WS with him. I always hated him and I am glad to see him go. Go ahead Boston sign him for like 50 million a year and he will be great in the regular season.....but in the playoffs when it counts the most he will hide under the bed like a scared little girl in a thunder storm. A-Rod=Curse! He is a loser and always will be. Have fun losing for another team you piece of s@#t!

NUD,
I have been a Yankee fan since 1973. The team this century is like the teams of the 80s. High priced primadona hitters and no pitching. A-Rod is the biggest bum of the lot.
Next years team MAY not go to the playoffs but with the young pitchers like Joba, Hughes, Kennedy already up and 3 more youngsters ready toi at least be invited to spring training the Yankees have a new Dynasty in the making. With Cano and Melky we have the makings of a very goodyoung team. Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Pettite will teach this young team how to win and be the bridge to the next Dynasty. There is more to do. We need to get rid of Mussina and the whole bullpen except Rivera. GIAMBI MUST ALSO GO!!! Sign Lowell 2 things it will accomplish take him away from the Redsox and get back a Ex-Yankee Farmhand.
With this type a team Giradi will be the perfect manager a young team with a lot of talent poised to make a new run.

Michael,

I agree with you totally! Just make sure that you all know that the next few years are building years until the next dynasty starts. I hope you all can deal with possibly not even going to the playoffs for the next couple of years. I can. I would rather see young kids grow and develop than watch over priced veterans get us to the playoffs and fail. I think it will be a fun next couple of years and Girardi is the right guy to lead the ship.

I am a Arod fan, but I am a Yankee fan first. We need to make a few moves GET PITCHING. Lets not spend days talking about what a bum Arod is. Most of us agree he is. Lets wish him well and turn the page. Arod should now not be the focus on here, we need to focus on how to catch the Redsox

Selfish managerial canidate .

Selfish Players

Clueless Gm

New Ownership with signs of airheadedness

Price to the Looney Ward.

Priceless

Arod Opts-Out. What a sense of urgency on Arod's part. Does he think the yankees were not going to sign or make valid offers to Mo and Jorge. But it gets back to Boras. Most lawyers unless desperate don't ask questions unless they have the answer. You cannot tell me Boras has not been quietly making inroads to the likes of LAA/Dodgers/San Fran/Boston/Mets. The yankees were going to announce a mgr. decision today. He couldn't wait on the developments for the next 10 days. So, nutshell, Its about the money, he knows about a future deal, he did not want NY.
I wanted him as a Yankee but I did not love him as a Yankee. I'm sure he felt this from many of our fans. He's like the guy with the pretty girl but he doesn't love her, its about possession. Where's Charlie hayes when you need him.

The Yankees will be competitive they have to put a$$es in the seats.

Dog
I am all about letting the kids develop. If you read any minor league scouting reports the Yankees have 3 more arms in the minors ready 2 of them are releivers. They also have 3 more top positional players coming in the next couple of years. Giradi is theperfect man for the job.
I want to see this young crop of talent play and develop. The only other verterns besides Jeter MO Jorge & Pettite is Lowell & Matsui. Matsui I would like to trade at the deadline in 2008.

This is the same guy who sign with the Rangers? And now he is worry about the direction of the team?

I root for the uniform so I agree with Hank Steinbrenner, if a guy does not want to play for the Yankees, good riddance! Sure, I hate to see that type of (regular season) production leave, but the drama is over so let's move on. Honestly, if he doesn't want to play in NY, he won't want to play in Boston but if they do get him, I wish them luck. Just look at what he just did and how much class he showed- He had his agent make this announcement during the clinching game of the World Series which showed a complete lack of respect for the game of baseball.

Did any of you see the shot of Tom Werner getting the news on his Blackberry during the game last night? He was smiling like a crazy.
I think Boston should try to re-sign Lowell, but you know their policy, if he wants more than 2 or 3 years, he will be gone and that's where I don't want the Yanks to get suckered. I don't want a 38 year old Mike Lowell playing for the Yanks. I'd love him for a couple of seasons but not more than that.

Prediction: A-Rod will be an Angel.

Sully, Casual: I know you guys are happy today so I'm happy for you...

Bronx Bomber
What selfish Manager candidate?
Selfish Players Absolutely
A-Rod (gone Yeah)
Clemens (gone Yeah)
Musina (Please Go)
Giambi (Must Go)
ALL Middle Releif(Must GO)

The Ownership is not airheaded this was the best thing that they could have done not pursue A-Rod.

The GM has made great deals to pick up young talent. The Yankees right now have the one of the most stocked minors in baseball.

Bronx Bomber you have no clue you were probably a Met fan in the 80s and eraly 90s.

I would look at this as an opportunity.

We never won with A Rod.

He is no longer a role model for kids.

He is greedy.

He can't be trusted by his wife, the team or anyone else.

Seattle won 120 games after trading Johnson and Griffey Jr. We can rebuild without him. There is a lot of talent out there.

We can use his contract money to draft and sign other players! Hello!!! Get Phillips the 2B from Cindy. That's 30 HRs right there from a 2B. That kid plays hard!!! Get Ludwick, that's another 30 HR's with 500 ABs. We are alrady up 10 HR's.

It's not the end of the world.

Rather it's 1995 all over again. New manager ... new hungry kids.

Torre was way too laid back and mishandled the pen, Edwar, also Shelley Duncan ...

A nice man, but it was time for a change. 7 years and 1.5 billion in salary and no WS win.

The Yanks need to make a few bold moves. Try to get Johan or Kazmir and keep them from Boston or Toronto.

Had Toronto not lost Chris Carpenter of the Cards, (hurt now but coming back) they would have the best rotation in all of baseball with AJ, Marcum, Jesse, McGowan and Carp. They are now one pitcher shy.

The Red Sox have nice pitching with Beckett and Co. But still they are one pitcher shy of total dominance.

The Yanks could have

Joba
Wang
Kennedy
Pettitte
Kazmir/Santana

You need lefties at the Stadium.

Mr. Hankie S. will sort it all out. He should fire Cashman, who tries to imitate Theo and Shapiro (and others) but does so only to the detriment of the team. Cashman made way too many mistakes. Pavano, Igawa, Giambi, Brown, Irabu, Meyers, Farnsworth, Abreu. No backup C for half the year. In any other industry so many mistakes would not be tolerated!!!

Melky is ok. Would the Astros trade him one for one for Hunter Pence? They'd laugh. This is New York ... use the payroll and the equity to find a well oiled machine.

Two things we could do ... Lowell could come back. He was traded with Sterling H. for Tino and Nelson, yes? Or put Cano at 3B. Sign or get David Eckstein, who reminds me of Knoblauch. Put him at 2B if you have to. He is a very good player. The kind of player we have not had since Knoblauch. Eck helped the Angels win in 2002 and the Cards last year. He is a winner!!!!

Remember when we'd make trades for O'Neil and Knoblach or get a hold of Cone or Wells? Where is that team? We are now the team of Igawa. And that is only fourth best in the AL.

The Angels will be right there.

Cleveland will get back Jeremy Sowers and Cliff Lee and be very strong.

Detroit will retool.

Toronto is coming on.

The Angels are good.

The Red Sox are the best now ...

Lots of work to be done.

Let's turn the page on Torre, George, A Rod, Clemens and the rest of the dead wood and go forward.

Hard to be excited with Cashman though. Would you follow this man into combat?

Not bloody likely.

Mike,

You are correct. How do you think the Dynasty of the 90's started? It was the development of the kids mixed in with gritty type veterans. That is what we need. We need a Lowell type of player that will teach the young kids but also show emotion and desire to win. We need the right mix.

I also would like to complain about the playoff system. I really hate the first round of playoffs. They should be a 7 game series. It is really aggravating to watch a "hot" team beat a better team in the first round. Any team can beat any team in a 5 game series. This system does not really show who the better team is. It was obvious by the WS. The Rockies were totally outclassed by the RS and because they were on a hot streak they were in the WS. To me, if you are going to have the playoffs like that then what is the point of a regular season. It does not make any sense to me. Just my opinion.

Note to A-Rod ...

Get off celebritymingle.com and pick up your cell phone.

Call Mo.

Call Andy

Call Jorge

"Hey guys what are you going to do? Stay or go?"

It's really just that simple.

Are you people crazy?
Trade some young talent?
The only deal I would make is for Santanna. They can have Wang and Umberto Sanchez nobody else. It is a time to rebuild.

One thing I'd really like to see is for Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada and Mo Rivera to come out and say that A-Rod never called them and asked them their plans and I'd hope that those three feel a sense of loyalty to Jeter and some of the other Yanks and use this as motivation to not only come back with the Yanks, but to use this as a rallying point all next season.
The scary thing is what if A-Rod knows something we don't and that those three are leaving as well? I doubt that but I also didn't think A-Rod would leave.

Bomber- I think you are referring to Mattingly as the selfish managerial candidate and I'm unsure how you can say that since no announcement has been made yet. Give the guy a chance, I mean it's Donnie Baseball, not A-Rod!

I don't believe the absence of Joe Torre (loved him) or Alex Rodriguez (liked his bat) represents a net loss to the Yankees. It was time.

Grampa, you were the only one here talking about a reunion of ex-Yankees in Southern California next year. Now the press is on it. Rumors are rife enough in LA that Joe Torre, vacationing in Vegas, was serenaded by standing Dodger fans chanting "Come coach LA! Come coach LA!" when Elton John introduced him from the stage. LA hasn't signed any of its coaches; neither has NYY; many believe it means the same thing both places -- manager isn't known yet.

I happen to know which big moving van line Joe has used in the past. Should I give them a call? Should I ask if Long, Thomson, et. al. are on the list as well?

Poem Regarding the Redsox

RED

Red is the colour of the ambition burning in my soul,
Red is the colour of the devil which feeds me my power,
Red is the colour of my heart which shows my love,
Red is the colour of the blood I spill to prove what’s right

If Bronx Bomber says something you can be 99 percent sure it's true and from the heart.

Isn't he building the New Stadium? He wants what is best for the team.

No "I" in team.

Mattingly should be a team guy now as he was when he played. His time will come.

What's the problem? Not everyone can be the chief, you need braves.

Girardi and Pena and Mattingly should all stay. You need a core of coaches and teachers. Again, Dallas Cowboys under Landry had like 8 assistant coaches who became head NFL coaches!!!

Zim and Mel were a big part of the dynasty success.

Bring in Mazzone. Keep Eiland with the kids for now.

We don't need 12 pitching prospects, deal Horne, Sanchez, Smith, Carptenter, whomever ... for Kazmir and/or Santana. Do it now, do it fast. Just buy Kazmir, whip out the checkbook. What's the problem? I just don't get these people!

Time for bold moves. Highest payroll (a third is a waste) and highest equity means BEST TEAM. Or should, with the right leaders.

Bad leaders = bad moves.

Good GM = good moves.

Today is the anniversary of my father's death, so it is a sad day ...

Diane,
If you see Scott Proctor walking around with a bag of ice strapped to his arm all winter, you know Joe is coming!

The chant from the Dodgers fans is precisely the reason Joe shouldn't go. I mean "Come COACH LA? Any self respecting baseball fans know that the team's leader is the MANAGER, not a coach. Don't go Joe!

Send A-Rot an email message at:

http://arod.mlb.com/players/rodriguez_alex/email.jsp

Jim A., you have a point in that LA has never been a great baseball town like NYC, with knowledgable fans and teams locked in combat. I lived there for years in my mispent youth and as a child watched the Dodgers and Koufax with my family, and as an adult I have lived for many years in NYC as a Yankees fan, so I do know the difference firsthand.

However, the Dodgers are nevertheless a historic, traditional, respected team and organization and Torre was very much admired and liked as a broadcaster in his Los Angeles years.

There is only one New York, and Joe is not going to be managing here. I say if LA wants him so much he should go and enjoy.

Jim A -

You will see.

If mattingly does not get the Job watch the comments and the backlash,

Why do you think MATTINGLY even came back. you think he really missed the team? in fact he decline the request at first then pimped George onto basically offering him the Job as an INCENTIVE. so if Joe G get the Job you better bet Don will not be happy. and this Arod move may force their hand and rethink and now choose mattingly. This is what happens when you let PR determine your team.

People say character blah blah .

Terry Francona just won two WS in 4 years with a crew of misfits, now either he is a great manager even better than Joe working with character affected players or the chemistry thing is overrated

And the Fox said..."I didn't want the grapes anyway...they were sour".

ARod finally shows his true colors. Great bat, weak glove for hire. Now he will get his wish to go back to shortstop. He also won't have to see his shrink 3 times a week now. What a weakling! At least we can put a good defensive player at 3rd (Phillips) and give Duncan a chance to platoon at 1st. Yankees will be fine without Rodriguez. Thanks for the highlights, good-bye and good riddance to phony ballplayers!
Also, "Good Luck, Clueless Joe", in LA. They need a guy like you in that clubhouse. See ya in the World Series! Hope they pay you at least more than 1/2 of what you would have got if you took our insulting offer.
Girardi is the guy!

Right Now your rotation has to be solid if not lIGHTS out the santana trade has to be explored or peavy , oswalt have to do those deals especailly if DOn is managing can't have mister Icon managing a aging roster question mark staff and shaky pen recipes for disaster so get him the best team possible

**After next season the yanks will out 50mm of contracts which DESPERATELY need to be gone. I'll try to find a taker for Giambi, it could be easier this time cause he has one more year left in his contract and maybe we can get something out of him.

**As for AROD, well thats AROD no one should have NOT seen this coming. It was said through out the year that he'll be a fool if he didnt opt out. What pisses me off the most is that he couldnt be man enough to call the team and tell him he aint coming back. And to make matters worse he makes an excuse that the non signing of MO and Posada was one of the reasons (GIMMIE A BREAK!!) anyway good riddance.

**PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING is what we need to focus on instead of mashing the ball. If Bedard comes availiable which a few writers I saw said that he might be, I say go after him. He might be cheaper in terms of prospects then Santana.

**If CREDE is availiable (who is coming back from back surgery) I say trade Damon for him.

**Hire Mazzone as your pitching coach..

Bomber,
Mattingly always said he didn't want to get back into baseball until his kids were in high school at least. I'm confused as to why you are pounding on him so much, he hasn't said a word about leaving if the Yanks don't hire him. The Yanks begged him to come back and he was busy with his family, there's nothing wrong with that. He said he would not come back to baseball unless he could sink his whole heart into it and from what I've ready, nobody worked harder at coaching than he did, especially when he was the hitting coach. I guess you can't blame him for feeling a little upset, I mean if he was told he would be the manager when Torre left, why shouldn't he be mad? Wouldn't you?
Let's say your boss told you to move away from home and promised you the big job you've always wanted if you could just wait a few years until the guy who has the job now retires/moves on, and then he Yanks it out from under you for a guy who people THINK will make a better candidate for the job. How would you handle that?

Torre is Home "TEABAGGING " himself laughing out loud

Is that possible?

He said he was'nt coming back unless he managed at some point Jim , this is what he said he made some kind of talk with then George and ran the family thing but ran the desire to manage thing and when the Boss said cool the family thing was gone out the window. that is called tatic.

There is many people in the Org who is puzzled as too why such a deal was made.

Torre himself did not have a clue that his "replacement " was right next to him. They gained a friendship and that fear went out the window (torre did'nt see the threat) but the ole sain held true KEEP YOUR ENEMIES CLOSE TO YOU, (Bench coach)
as for girardi in him Torre saw a threat as well with Willie not an negative threat but business, that is why when openings came He pushed hard in recommendations for Girardi and Willie to be Hired.

Willie was and is the best choice and would have made a great marrige not only due to him being the first Black manager for the YANKEES but his history which is longer than Donnie's.

Let me get this straight!

I do hate Don Matingly he was my Fav (even when the racist coach told me to root otherwise) I am protective of Don becasue I do not want his legact tainted by dealing with this sqaud in transition

DO NOT HATE MATTINZLY

Jim That happens all the time especially when Ownership goes through transition

Live by the sword, die by the sword, Donnie.

Make a cozy sweetheart deal for yourself to 'inherit' a job you haven't earned, lose it when the Little Bosses inherit jobs they haven't earned.

If Bronx Bomber is on this blog all day long, he sure as he!! isn't building the new stadium.

We'll see how "in the know" he is as he assured us Mattingly would be the new Manager. If it's Girardi, his credibility goes back to zero - the same as everyone else on this blog. Not that that's bad - it just means everything we write here is purely speculation. None of us have the inside scoop.

I wanted to believe that A-Rod wanted to stay and wanted to help the Yankees get that next ring... but for him to opt out so quick, on so lousy a pretense as not being sure on Jorge, Andy and Mo, is UFB. Let him and his AH agent Boras try and get the big bucks from a small market. Good bye.

Looks like its Girardi for Manager much like the majority of knowledgeable fans felt was the right move.

Looks like Diaper aka bottom boy aka Viper was wrong yet once again. Wipe off your chin and wipe off your knees boy!

Arod see ya! If you don't wanna be a Yank just say it...don't play games as you know The Yanks would pay the most. So you and your "pimp" are trying to start a bidding war...I hope its one you live to regret.

Rebuild and they will come.....there are plenty of young guns in the system. Give them a chance to shine.

Actually, Anon, some of do have at least a tiny 'inside scoop'. And some of us (often, but by no means always, the same ones) do have credibility well above zero here. Not all speculation is baseless.

None of the credible or the knowledgable fails to identify him(or her)self with a consistent moniker, though.

Call the nanny, quick!

Looks like Diaper is poopy again.

So glad to see all you suckers showered AR with your love this year! What did it get you? The good news is that he is FINALLY gone and now we can build us another championship team without the distraction.

And the Fox said..."I didn't want the grapes anyway...they were sour".

Yes it is true that Arod had above-average stats compared to other 3rd basemen. That being said the Yankees has well-below-average stats at three postions- 1B, DH and CF. So if the Yankees can upgrade at those positions, they will be all right. They might just have to win more games 3-2, rather than 7-2, that's all.

It look like Baltimore might have a fire sale. I think this is where they will look first- either to get Tejada and move him to 3rd or get Brian Roberts to play 2nd and move Cano to 3rd (this 2nd scenario would then allow them to trade Damon and put in Roberts as the leadoff hitter.) Since Melky Cabrera would probably be part of any deal, they would they should then sign Tori Hunter. Also, any deal with Baltimore could be expanded to include Bedard or Dan Cabrera.

So the lineup could be either:
Damon-LF
Jeter-SS
Abreu-RF
Tejada-3B
Posada-C
Hunter-CF
Matsui-DH
Cano-2B
Phillips-1B

or:
Roberts-2B
Jeter-SS
Abreu-RF
Hunter-CF
Posada-C
Cano-3B
Matsui-LF
Duncan/Giambi-DH
Phillips-1B

A pretty formidable lineup either way.

cs07,

Posada is not under contract and who in Baltimore told you they were having a fire sale?

And the Fox said..."I didn't want the grapes anyway...they were sour".

Mets fans would know about having their teeth set on edge by those sour grapes, eh Nudgie?

Tejada is a broken down version of his former self since he stopped doing 'roids. We don't need another one of those.
My guess is he brought his HGH syringes to Baltimore and nailed Roberts as well, I wouldn't trust either of them.
I'd rather swing a deal for Crede, because when healthy, he is formidable. I'd check out his medical records and if he can be had on the cheap as far as prospects (no way Chicago wants Damon), then I'd take him. He is a great defensive player and he is still pretty young.

There is a big RH hole in this team's lineup to fill now so Cashman has his work cut out for him.

Grampa your so bad! Now take that young child off your lap this instance;)! You have been warned about this before!

Nudge;

I'm speculating that Posada is coming back- that's what we are all doing here, speculating.

As far as baltimore- it has been mentioned in several newspapers and on air since the season ended. They want to cut salary with Tejada, and Roberts and Bedard are coming up for arbitration. They have a new GM (McPhail) who wants to make big changes.

Grampa,

Why do you say that? What Mets fans are you talking about and what sour grapes are they talking about? Did the Mets just lose a player they now say they never wanted anyway? Im confused. Did I miss a story or something? Please clarify with details since it sounds more like a knee jerk Boston/Mets assumption that you all seems to make at someone else that isn't a Yankee Fan(which there are about 300 million BTW). I guess there are 300 million Mets and Red Sox fans then.

If Arod was going to Opt out I would not want him opting out any other way then the way he did yesterday.

Alex showed the world how big of a douche he is once again by attempting to upstage the world series.

Congrats to the Sox this year. They won this year with good pitching and some great young players.

Now the Yankees can go back to Boo'ing Arod and not have to worry about talking about this egocentric baastard.

cs07,

So you are reporting then the "speculation" or the reporters who have proven recently to be as accurate in their speculation as the bloggers here.

Well - I guess that is certainly one way for Alex to prove he can make an impact in the post season.

The fact is, if he wanted to be here, he would have at least waited for the Yankees to make him an offer before opting out. He doesn't and won't and I wish him the best of luck in the future.

I have three landing spots for him aside from the Dodgers and Angels who have been brought up a lot.

1: San Fran Giants - they would replace a tainted superstar with a squeaky clean one who would break all of Bonds' records.

2: Baltimore - Cal was A-Rod's idol, Angelos desperately needs a drawing card to keep people from going to Nationals' games and up until recently has had no problem spending money (though never wisely)

3: Marlins - a true dark horse in every sense of the word, but they have lots of money to spend right now and signing a local boy like Alex to be the face of their franchise could help them get support for the new stadium they want. They could either move Miggy Cabrera or keep both of them and play Alex at SS and move Hanley Ramirez to the OF where he is better suited defensively.

I can't see Baltimore letting Bedard go, that would be ludicrous. Guys like him come along once every 10 years or so.

Nudgie, there are tells. Not all the 300 million go into hiding or into mood swings when the Mets collapse, or think that teams who made it into the playoffs have the same reactions as teams that didn't. Or even hide their affiliation from Yanks fans. Come on, sonny. Wear your cap.

Congratulations to the Boston Red Sox for winning the World Series, and to Alex Rodriguez for opting out!!

Chip,

cs07 has already rules out Baltimore. They are having a fire sale.

Ha, ha!

The biggest joke of Boras' statement was that Alex opted out because he was unsure of the status of Posada, Rivera and Pettitte. If he signs with Floria, Texas or SF, how can he stand up there with a straight face with the cast of clowns he'll be playing with. Talk about unstable franchises!

This is all about three things- money, money and more money. Let him go to the west coast and break the home run record, no one will care, just like nobody cared when Bonds broke it.

Can you imagine if the Yankees win the championship next year? What an indictment on his career.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Grampa,

We have been down this road before about ten times. Catch up already.

So who went into hiding when? Are you up on the events or just drinking some good stuff?

Still haven't heard any elaboration on the sour grapes yet. Do you even understand the term. It comes from and old Grimms fairytale that I suggest you read....maybe to your grandchildren. Then you can come back and see hat you miss used the phrase.

ARod, is high, he is far, he is gone!!!!

Nudge

As cs07 said, he is speculating.

I understand that because the Yankees appear to be in a bit of trouble now is the time you want to come on here and do what you do best, which is stir stuff up, and I appreciate that.

But the problem is, those of us who have been here a while know what your angle is and have realized it is probably best to just ignore 90% of what you spout. True, you are good for entertainment value, but you enjoy painting the darkest possible picture for the Yankees and asserting that all their players and prospects are horrible.

With that in mind, here's a present for you - the worst possible Yankee lineup I can devise:

Damon - LF
Jeter - SS
Abreu - RF
Giambi - 1B
Joe Crede - 3B
Matsui - DH
Cano - 2B
Melky - CF
Jose Molina - C

Whoever did the Waaaaaaaaaah and signed it Suzyn Waldman is obviously not well-informed. Ms. Waldman has no particular fondness for the mercenary A-Rod.

You to love people like Nudge who live to be able to whip out their salt shakers and rub salt in wounds, yet they take no stance one way or the other. This is the type of person who does not vote in any elections but sits there and second guesses everything from afar.
I normally will not post anything on this site because I am not a Yankee fan (long time Tigers fan) but this guy aggravates me. I bet he's really Michael Moore.

Chip,

If you think thats what I do best then your interpretive reading skills are diminished. What I do best is bring reason to Yankee fan logic when that logic is flawed. Like for instance today when cs07 figures that Baltimore is having a fire sale...so of course they will give their best player to the Yankees because.....the Yankee fans want him. Thats Yankee fan logic.

Now my reason. Why would Baltimore do that? Who would the Yankees have to offer for him? Do teams within the same division usually trade their best player to a rival?

These are thing that the average person who doesn't have the emotional attachment to the Yankees realizes immediately.

So again I have served my cause!

Nudgie, your ignorance is showing by a couple thousand years. 'Sour grapes' story and phrase come from the Old Testament, book of Jeremiah if my old memory isn't failing me, and my inclusion of the related phrase about setting teeth on edge should have been a 'telling' clue...

Take a deep breath -- another -- good boy! and lets get back to baseball.

Just to put an end to the Baltimore thing on here, and to prove I'm not making things up, it was in the Boston Globe yesterday (at least the online version) that McPhail is going to the winter meetings to unload Tejada and possibly Bedard, if he can get a couple of major league ready players for him. The Yankees would be foolish to not at leeast listen to an offer. Franchises have unloaded ace pitchers before (See Florida and Josh Beckett) so it could happen.

Here's your song ya Old Fart;)........

Many, many years ago when I was 23
I was married to a Wider who was purty as can be
This Wider had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red
My father fell in love with her and soon they two were wed

This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life
For my daughter was my mother cause she was my father's wife
To complicate the matter even though it brought me joy
I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy

I'm my own grampa,
I'm my own grampa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I'm my own grampa

My little baby then became a brother-in-law to dad
And so became my uncle though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle then that also made him brother
Of the Wider's grown up daughter who of course was my step-mother

My father's wife then had a son who kept them on the run
And he became my granchild for he was my daughters son
My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue
Because although she is my wife she's my grandmother too

I'm my own grampa,
I'm my own grampa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I'm my own grampa

Oh if my wife is my grandmother then I'm her grandchild
And every time I think of it, it nearly drives me wild
For now I have become strangest case you ever saw
As husband of my own grandmother I'm my own grampa

I'm my own grampa,
I'm my own grampa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
I'm my own grampa

I would defitinitly listen to any offers to pick up Bedard, but the only pitcher I might trade is Kennedy.

Brian,

How wrong can you be. I am the epitome of the involved. I have never missed any vote outside of a school budet here or there. In fact I vote via absentee ballot many times since I am a firm beleiver that if you dont vote, dont complain. Its the minimum you can do.

As for the rest of the garbage you spouted, what salt did I rub into what wound? And if you think I have never takenb a stance one way or the other...then you just have never really read any of my posts.

Nudge ,

Are you drunk again? Remember the wit you dazzled us with when you were intoxicated by early afternoon?
Yeah , I really want you voting for something that matters or want to hear your opinion. Go find an AA meeting rummy and go back to your Mutts site.

cs07 - I heard that about Bedard - the thinking was that McPhail was going to see what he can get for him because of how thin the Baltimore system is. The thinking is that he will probably soon command a Santana type salary and rather than pay that the Orioles could use him to get three or four top prospects to build around.

I don't know that there's really much sense to that though. I would think in his position that you try to unload everyone other than Bedard, Markakis, Roberts and Lowen.

I'm not sure what market he's going to find for Miguel Tejada - given a circumstantial link to steroids and his diminishing play lately, but I do think he'll be moved, and wouldn't be shocked if Ramon Hernandez wound up with the Mets.

However, while McPhail is trying to unload some of the mistakes made under the former regime, I don't think that would prevent Angelos from dabbling in the A-Rod waters. Remember, Boras is branding Alex as a franchise unto himself, a draw both in the box office and through TV ratings - Angelos, as an owner, is dumb enough to buy into that.

All I can say is THANK GOD! Goodbye to that poser Arod. Take the $30+ mill it would have cost to keep him and spread it out among 2 $15 mill players instead. How about Andruw Jones for starters. Decent replacement for Arod's bat plus a legit CF. Move Melk to RF or package him w/ Wang and one of the kid pitching pr
