Here are two notes:
The players the Yankees did not tender contracts to by last night's deadline were righthanders T.J. Beam, Matt DeSalvo and Darrell Rasner; along with outfielder Bronson Sardinha, who had been designated for assignment Saturday.
I talked yesterday with Kevin Cabral, a play-by-play announcer for ESPN Deportes in the Dominican Winter League. Here are his thoughts on a couple of Yankees who are playing there.
Jose Veras, RHP, Escogido: "He's been throwing the ball very well. He's basically a fastball/curveball guy. I've seen him throwing 93-94 miles per hour, with good control of his curveball."
Veras has not allowed a run in 7 2/3 innings. He has given up four hits and three walks and struck out 12.
Wilson Betemit, IF, Escogido: "He's been striking out quite a bit, but he's gotten some key hits for his team. ... More is expected out of him."
Betemit has played in 12 games. He's hitting .286 with 7 RBIs, two homers, 7 walks and 14 strikeouts.

I think Veras will be one of the guys in the Yanks pen for 2008.
ESPN.com reports that a member of the Mitchell Investigation tells them that a former Yankee trainer testified that he gave steroids to Roger Clemens.
The trainer's name is Brian MacNamee who was the personal trainer of Roger Clemens before he came to NY and later took on Andy as a client too. BUT THE REPORT DOES NOT SAY ANDY BOUGHT STEROIDS
So here's the thing. Jason Grimsley in his statements said that MacNamee was the guy who got him steroids and to a third party. Now that appears true. Grimsley also said that Clemens AND Andy used - so there could be fire to that smoke. So far 2 of the 3 things Grimsley said have proved true (MacNamee got the steroids and Clemens used) could Andy be next?
Not exactly surprising about Clemens, unfrtunately. Hopefully Pettitte isn't one the list.
There is a report coming out of Newark that several prominent Yankees are on the list.
I am clinging to the belief that Jeter and Rivera are not on the list, because those are the two whose appearance there would really disappoint me.
Marianne, if it makes you feel better, I suspect that if Jeter's name was on that list it would have leaked faster than a dropped watermelon.
Chip,
Andy just shared them w/ Roger. Oh this is not going to be a good day!
I thought Pettitte would have retired to avoid this mess. So much for Rogers "legendary workout program" that I was so sick of hearing about.
Jim,
Sadly it would also explain why Andy decided to sign the day after MLB announced the release date of the Mitchell report and why his deal was finalized yesterday ahead of Alex's and Mo's. Both of whom agreed to contracts earlier.
Depends on the meaning of 'several' and 'prominent' how bad this day is going to be.
At best, it's got to be more than two and it's people whose names have been heard of by more than Chip ...
I heard yesterday that the list contains "MVP's".
More rumors will be leaking out all day so we'll just have to wait, but you can bet the agents and lawyers are spinning stories right now to defend their clients.
Diane -
The positive about having a team full of prominent players is that they could name four guys (for example Andy, Roger, Farnsworth, Giambi) and still have plenty of proment guys not on the list.
Jim
Giambi and Bonds were both MVP's, as were Clemens (I think), Tejada, Juan Gonzalez, and Sammy Sosa - not exactly names that would shock us.
Chip,
A-Rod?
Yes, Chip --
I guess playing for the Yanks is one definition of baseball prominence...
Reading the blog I get the notion that, okay, one we know about (Giambi), one we've long suspected (Clemens), about one we are apprehensive (Pettitte) -- but no consensus so far about other candidates for 'several'.
Funny that Matt DeSalvo was non-tendered. Wasn't he supposed to be one of the good young pitchers the Yanks had coming up?
About the list in general the expressions 'All Star', 'MVP', and 'Cy Young' have been used in print.
And you guys accuse me of "jumping at shadows". Just wait for the report, and stop the "over the clothes line" gossip.
Yanks "fanned" again when their pocket book kept them from getting Rowand. He signed for the same money Bernie was getting in his prime. Now I'm not saying Rowand is up to Bernie's standards, but when Hunter and Jones both sign for roughly $18 million per, Rowand is a steal at $12 million for 5 yrs. Even if the Yanks had to go to $13 or $14 million, ( roughly Matsui's salary), they could have had Rowand in CF, (replacing Melky), and Santana as their Ace. Once again, the "bottom line" rules, and the Yankee championship effort suffers.
I can not wait for this report.
I am a Yankee fan through & through. You all have heard my opinions. I have had a problem with 99% of the Yankee signings since the trade for Clemens. The only 2 signings I liked were Abreau & Damon. Starting with Clemens and the continuing with Giambi
Sheffeild
Choke-Rod
Johnson
Brown
And all of the rest of the over priced and immature players, no need to name them all.
Andy Pettite I have always the Yankees made a mistake by letting him go to the Astros and He was a MUST SIGN this year. I have always loved Pettite and it would break my heart if he is named in the Mitchell report.
This is what I believe should happen:
1. No player named should ever be included in HOF (like Jackson & Rose)
2. Any current player should be suspended for 1 season and their salaries should be donated to some a number of childrens charities.
3. All records broken by any player that used steroids the original stands & that player record is stricken from the books.
But it would be the best Christmas present if CHOKE-ROD IS ON THE LIST!!!!!!!!!!
I tell you what, if Arod is on this list this board will light up. It will be interesting to see if people start burning those Clemens posters along with the Bonds posters.
It seems likely that just about every MLB team will have players on this list.
So in every clubhouse there are two factions: 1. a few players doing steroids, and 2.the majority of the team not doing it, but knowing that the other guys were doing it,and saying nothing about it.
So- which of the above groups are more guilty?
If several prominent Yankees are on the list and Jeter and Rivera aren't, I wouldn't exactly feel great about those two. So much for leadership.
Diane,
Rodriguez and Farnsworth have been mentioned here as well.
You guys are outta control. What am I gonna see posted next? "Getta a rope?"
Gotta love the bitterness of the Mutt fan's. If you listen to the WFAN Frothing Dog Russo is so excited that their could be Yankees on the list that he can't control himself. Same thing for Carton of Cigarettes on his morning show. A Mutt fan called into his show praying that Yankee's were on this list. Where are the priorities? If they cheated as Yankee fans they will feel our wrath. This isn't something to joke about. It's against the law and the intergrity of the game. Also please do not make Bonds out to be some martryr. He is a convicted felon who perjured himself. Finally, I hope that if Big Papi is on this list, that Red Sox fan's call him the fake that he is too.
I did forget one thing any player named and is already in the HOF should be taken out of the Hall.
Roy - Aaron Rowand is a complimentary player who had one good year. San Fran GROSSLY overpaid for him. He's no better than Eric Byrnes (also grossly overpaid). Watch, I assure you that in the bigger ballparks of the NL West his numbers will decline and injuries will catch up with him from all the years of throwing his body around. You want a good comparison for Rowand - try Chad Curtis.
I'll take Melky at 8 years younger over him any day of the week.
Roy,
What is 'out of control' about fans expressing their concern about the effects of the Mitchell Report on the team?
Do you feel compelled to find something to make a nasty comment about each and every day?
Can we be assured that this was your 'negativity spewing' for Thursday, and the rest of us can get on with being human?
Diane -
Don't waste too much time on Roy - he just posted that the Yankees are essentially being cheap this winter. I believe he is the only person in America who would make that claim. He lacks any sort of credibility and exists only to be contrarian.
What about Andy Phillips? This occurred to me last week: how often have the Yanks let a merely serviceable player just go, much less one with a decent bat and some fielding skills? Maybe they're preparing for the deluge.
What's to come?
Damon?
Abreu?
Melky?
Cano?
At best, "several" means Giambi and two others, one of them presumably being Clemens. I suspect we'll be lucky if we get away with that. Someone at ESPN said it's going to be "a rough day in the Bronx."
Anonymous at 10:48 was me. Sorry folks. And sorry for the doomsday talk.
Michael:
I like your penalties, but since they only started a testing policy a few years ago, these guys are going to say that did nothing illegal.
And there is also the proof issue for something alledged to have happened 5 or so years ago. Could see Fehr and co. holding this up in the courts for years should fines and suspensions be issued.
It's a shame- but I feel very little will result from this. As for the fans, it will be similar to the 94 strike- a loss of fan interest short term, and then will be forgotten after a couple of years.
Throwing names around, without any substantial evidence what-so-ever, is outta control. This is "lynch mob" mentality stuff. Just wait for the report, and get the sheriff.
I know that most fans everywhere are feeling the same concerns about their teams that we feel about ours and I must say I will not rejoice to hear of their pain if any of their players are named.
Red Sox fans must be worried about the supersized Big Papi being named.
It's not a good day anywhere except maybe in Queens since there are said to be no current Mets on the list.
Roy would know about PUNITIVE, it's his default mode.
CHIP-
Signing Rowand would also have probably forced the Giants to deal with the Yanks for Matsui. The Yanks missed a real opportunity to improve both the pitching\Santana, and defense\Rowand. The trading of Melky and Matsui would have also cleared up the current "log jam" involving Giambi\Matsui\Damon. You gotta admit that currently Rowand is a better player than Melky. Down the road, who knows?
MITCHELL TO NAME 'SEVERAL' YANKEES, ESPN/NY POST
Saw this on ESPNs bottom line and now in the NY Post
The Bergen Record reported that "several" prominent Yankees players would be named at this afternoon's news conference.
http://www.nypost.com/seven/12132007/sports/yankees/this_is_all_about_the_names_463864.htm
http://www.bergenrecord.com/page.php?qstr=...2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2
Clemens, Giambi, Sheffield, Canseco
''prominent yankees with the exception of Canseco."
Mitchell report says ''several'' which is more than 2 and less than many.
F*ck Mitchell and Redsox. He's Bullsh*t. Well Selig and Co. are already rewriting history to avoid the objectivity issues. We all know that George Mitchell was a share owner in the Red Sox. He said so himself in a published interview in 2004. He also held the title of "team president" or something like that at one point. Now Selig and Co. are saying he never owned a share of the team and was never employed as anything more than an adviser.
Red Sox expose: Gabe Kapler and Nomar
Yankees: the entire 40 man roster
Breaking News- Espn Magazine Sean Asteil is reporting that Clemens got supplied of roids while with the Yankees in year of 1999 and 2000. It was reported on Mike and Mike in the morning that Roger Clemens name will be listed on Mitchell report. Former Trainer of Roger Clemens George Mcnamee obtained Steriods.
Mitchell was paid by the sox, and will be paid by them again. Hes a red sox.
If the report comes out and its tons of Yankees and few red sox, im gonna have a hard time accepting it. As should any team who gets killed by this.
If you take a psych class you will realize that its near impossible to be unbiased, even when you want to be.
Its just poor judgement by MLB to appoint a man with ties to MLB and a particular team.
We'll see, but this report was in question the day this man was foolishly appointed. Hes a seedy politician, not a saint like hes being portrayed here, who has a vested personal and financial interest in its outcome. You are being naive if you dont see it. Beyond Yankees red sox, he will be protecting baseball in general, by releasing some names and withholding others (think magical cal ripken or any likable - key word - legend).
Im not rooting for any player to be on this list, but its unrealistic to think that this list is going to be accurate, all inclusive, and without biased.
I wonder what stance MLB is going to take on this in terms of discipline. Are they going to suspend some of these players?
Imagine if they do and it's a bunch of Yankees named and no Red Sox. I hope the Steins explode on MLB.
Why are the Yankees the ONLY team that stupid ESPN is saying that their players will be on the report??????? You just watch---NO Redsox will be named.
The reason Because people who have seen the report have said that the Yankees are the most represented team.
Put Asterisk on Redsox as well
2004* Redsox *cough *Cough-Kevin Millar, Trot Nixon. Curt Schilling
2007*- "Kevin Youkilis,Mike Lowell and Senator Mitchell since He's on Redsox payroll.
Gammons, Phillips and company jump up and down with glee whenever there is a potential for "a bad day in the bronx"- so let's take it easy and see what happens.
If Clemens is the biggest name on the list- it doesn't necesarily indict the yankees franchise- he was on Boston for 13 years for gods sake.
I certainly wouldn't want to be Suzyn Waldman today- that Clemens is back audio will be played ad naseum by Yankee haters everywhere.
I can understand Clemens, but ANDY!!! WHY ANDYYYY WHYYYYY???!!!!!!!!!!
Or you could say it's a good day for baseball, a step in the right direction, a long time coming, yada yada. All of which is true, and a potent argument for anyone who remembers 1987 or a stick named Brady hitting 50 HRs, but doesn't quite help convince that this report is actually going to do anything about it.
Roy,
Throwing names around is called SPECULATION and it's "fun". You have been speculating that the Yanks are trying to save cash and that the SonBrenners will sell the team, what's the difference?
Oh and by the way, I agreed with your Rowand post except the saving money portion of it. The Yanks could have given him less years, more money and moved him to left when Jackson was ready to take over and had Santana.
As Chip said, Rowand may not be all that, but he's better than Melky. While Rowand is overpaid, Melky is vastly overrated.
JIM-
Character assassination in the name of "fun"? No thanks.
Also, Chip said he'd take the younger Melky over Rowand.
Some poster from Espn boards posted this

These are illegal substances for the United States!!!! So if they are illegal in the United Staes then they SHOULD BE BANNED IN BASEBALL!!!!!!!
Wow
Varitek... Trot
Not 100% unexpected but still sad
Same with Nomar
I am looking at the list and don't see Kevin Millar.
Really?
REALLY?
Look, I love Millar and I love everyone on that 2004 team, but come on!
Michael- I totally agree- so why did Selig wait so long to have a policy?
Selig's press conference should be short and sweet- "I resign"
So if that list is accurate we've got Clemens, Damon, Farnsworth, Giambi, Pettitte. Did I miss someone from our current roster?
NO MIKE LOWELL?
WHAT?
Felix Heredia?
Man, imagine how bad he'd suck if he DIDN'T use it
Selig didn't have a policy because he liked the money coming into the game.
Look, Selig is one of the scumbag colluding owners from the 1980s
Why are people stunned he is a scumbag now?
No wonder Offerman went all 'roid rage and clobbered that dude with his bat.
Andy....noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Thanks for the breaking news anon. If thats the list 100% then I think the player who's hurt the most is Albert Pujols. I knew he fell off this season and we joked about him juicing, but thats a big blow. Nobody else from the list shocks me except..Lenny Dykstra???
NSH- I think it's a safe bet that use by Giambi, Farnsworth and Damon took place (or at least started) elsewhere- so that leaves only two players from the championship teams of the 90s (Clemens and Pettitte)- a big disappointment for Russo and others waiting to pounce on the legacy of those teams.
I agree with Sully, Selig should hang for this one and step down. He's been a scumbag since he was the Brewers owner.
Who is the Yankees top catching prospect (the one who is probably 2-3 years away)? I can't find anything on him on the web.
Thank heaven, no Jeter, no Rivera, no Posada, no Cano -- in fact, of the five, only Pettite is a 'birthright' Yankee.
After reading List is fake because too many names is duplicated and as of right now I would disregard I want no slander in my head.
I posted this earlier...
The scary one would be Pettite and for once I would or may defend him because if you look at the projectory range his progress mirrors that of a hitter with late production (body , skills)
Why would I defend him??
Because in no way would he signed this contract if he was KNOWINGLY guilty ....
However if Someone Mislead him after he placed his trust in that Individual (if the individual is guilty) then Pettite would be in the same class as Sheff (trusting Bonds).
Again I say tougher punishment needs to placed on the Dealers and team owners etc. If someone comes and has these special workouts etc , you as the team owner should be saying PEE in the Cup. especially when one is throwing extra MPH beyond the age of 30 but no the team PROFITTED off of it there for should be held responsible. Just like in the streets if you sell drugs you get a tougher sentence than those who use drugs
Since Committees wanna make a example out of Mariaon Jones and publicly destroy her take away medals along with The male bike rider if you was on roids and you won a CY YOUNG give it up or if you won a MVP give it up (in some cases the runner up may have been just as bad)
Here's the list:
"Brady Anderson, Manny Alexander, Rick Ankiel, Jeff Bagwell, Barry
Bonds, Aaron Boone, Rafaeil Bettancourt, Bret Boone, Milton Bradley,
David Bell, Dante Bichette, Albert Belle, Paul Byrd, Wil Cordero, Ken
Caminiti, Mike Cameron, Ramon Castro, Jose and Ozzie Canseco, Roger
Clemens, Paxton Crawford, Wilson Delgado, Lenny Dykstra, Johnny Damon,
Carl Everett, Kyle Farnsoworth, Ryan Franklin, Troy Glaus, Rich Garces,
Jason Grimsley, Troy Glaus, Juan Gonzalez, Eric Gagne, Nomar
Garciaparra, Jason Giambi, Jeremy Giambi, Jose Guillen, Jay Gibbons,
Juan Gonzalez, Clay Hensley, Jerry Hairston, Felix Heredia, Jr., Darren
Holmes, Wally Joyner, Darryl Kile, Matt Lawton, Raul Mondesi, Mark
McGwire, Guillermo Mota, Robert Machado, Damian Moss, Abraham Nunez,
Trot Nixon, Jose Offerman, Andy Pettitte, Mark Pior, Neifi Perez, Rafael
Palmiero, Albert Pujols, Brian Roberts,Juan Rincon, John Rocker, Pudge
Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Scott Schoenweiis, David Segui, Alex Sanchez,
Gary Sheffield, Miguel Tejada, Julian Tavarez, Fernando Tatis, Maurice
Vaughn, Jason Varitek, Ismael Valdez, Matt Williams and Kerry Wood."
Michaelz:
There are three - Jesus Montero, Frank Cervelli, Austin Romaine
Roy:
You can't make a trade thinking that "if I make this deal then it will force team X to take player Y from me." Say the Yankees did sign Rowand and then the Giants went ahead and trade for Rios instead, and that the Twins take the Red Sox offer for Santana - then the Yankees have Melky, Giambi, Abreu, Rowand, Matsui, and Damon for four spots (3 OF 1 DH) so now the Yankees have to send Melky to AAA and move one of the other guys to the bench. How does that make them a better team?
I'm all for gritty, gutty players like Rowand, but just like Johnny Damon started breaking down after he turned thirty, so too will Aaron Rowand - watch, I assure you he is going to start spending a lot of time on the DL as all those years of throwing his body around start catching up to him.
Bri, where did you get that from?
On the Rowand vs Melky fight. Listen, the guy just came off a career year in the Philly bandbox. He was a role player his entire career not unlike Melky today. Melkey will have a longer shelf life and has the( here I go again ) "potential" to be better than Rowand when he hits his prime. Switch hitter with a better arm already with room to improve. He hit .280 with 12 SB as a 21 year old and .273 with 13 SB as a 22 year old. Those doubles (50 the past 2 years ) will start turning into HR's soon enough making him a future 20/20 candidate with a cannon arm, what else do you want? Also Melky strikes out A LOT less than Aaron Rowand ( 119 compared to 68 ). Plus Rowand was in AA at age 22 and is a career 286 hitter after hitting .309 last year. He is a cheaper / younger option and Im with the decision to not sign him 100%.
AROD would have been the biggest blow if on the list becasue the future of baseball hinges on him in a certain way.
If Pujols is really on the list that would be a big let down
Bri, Your list as well has names DUPLICATED.
not authentic until proven otherwise
came from my friend who's wife's cousin is Cashman's sister-in-law
Boston fans must feel sick to their stomach right now. Finding out that Tek is on the list would be like us hearing Jeter was on it.
Chip, you're a fountain of knowledge. Thanks.
If you use my punishments you can turn a bad thing into a good thing.
By suspending any current player for a year and the owners paying thier salaries to numerous children's charities the players pay by loosing millions of dollars & the owners loose by paying for no product. It is a win for baseball because you turn it to a positive.
By eliminating any chance of those players making the HOF and taking away any record that they own & leaving the original records in tact you satisfy all issues.
The owners have to force a independent drug orginization like the FAA uses for pilots. If the players will not agree let them strike!!!!!! The owners have to stick to their guns when it comes to forcing the players for independant drug test.
F***K that Owners, managers, gm should be held responsible !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mutherf**ker comes to camp looking funny it is your duty to question that and demand that player take a drug test !!!!!!!! BUT INSTEAD they gain off the players progress and hide
Personally, I think this report will be ripped apart inside and out and by the time it's all said and done will have about as much credibility as Rafael Palmeiro testifying in front of Congress...
You get my point and my basic reasoning is as follows:
1. Mitchell was biased based on his prior involvements with baseball and his paid "honorary" director position with the Red Sox (something about honorary and paid don't go together for me)
2. The investigators were not knowledgeable of the topic or baseball training
3. The trainers and strength coaches were asked to speculate, not provide fact.
I have no confidence in this report at all. While many of the names may (most probably are) be true, I think the list is not a complete representation and is not a fair portrayal.
Sully: In your honest opinion, weren't you suspecting that you might see the following four Red Sox names: Schilling, Pedro, Ortiz, Manny. I know that I was.
Can't say I'm terribly shocked for Damon to be on the list, given the connections to Oakland and Boston - which came out looking pretty bad in all this.
Now as for the penalties, it's going to be tough because not all of these guys actually failed a steroid test - they are just annecdotally connected to steroids. Should be real interesting when the final list is announced.
I have no confidence that this report will have any objectivity whatsoever. Mitchell is a director in the Red Sox organization and as soon as he gives his report, he's going back on the Boston payroll. If you think that this report is going to name any prominent Red Sox players, you're nuts. And you can bet that he's going to filet the Yankees.
Troy Glaus is the only duplicate name ... that's called a typo
Can't believe no Schilling, even suspected Manny and Big Papi, but since Mitchell is making the report, I guess its obvious they won't be on it. Schilling looks like he's on it especially the way he is so outspoken against it and denying it a la Palmeiro and wagging finger at Congress.
Damon is a mild shock ... what the hell did he take??? Clemens you had to figure and he dragged Andy down with him .... Pujols? Not good for him. Nobody else on the list is all that shocking or surprising ... Farnsworth??? You stink AND you take HGH ... man, what gives?
Most of the list you can look at and say ... "yeah, that figures"
this will be forgotten about in a week
Time to educate the masses. The CBA rules! There is no stipulation in the CBA for teams to selectively test players. Testing was added to the CBA a few years ago under public and congressional pressure. Players union had fought testing vehemently prior to that. So no its not Bud Selig's fault and no its not the teams fault for not testing....its the players associations fault for standing in the way. Only pressure from the public made them relent to the limited testing that is now done.
Also you still can't get off the Boston conspiracy stuff. Yankee fans can't get over Boston being on top I guess.
THIS IS NOT ANOTHER YANKEES VS. RED SOX THING!!!
This is about the integrity of the game of baseball, and its future.
Also- isn't it troublesome that Selig and Mitchell are having seperate news conferences? It seems to me that they should be presenting a united front. This could mean that Bud will be disputing parts of the report. The denial continues.
1. MLB will be limited in what they can do about players who are implicated because their names were on the invoices and the phone records of the suppliers. That doesn't mean they didn't use the stuff -- as far as I'm concerned, if they bought it they used it. But it does mean that penalties which depend on proof that the stuff was in their bodies will not be available.
2. This list is incomplete. By some estimates three times this many guys were involved. The other shoe has yet to drop.
Ahh no you have Juan Gonzales as well which was the SAME errors as the one posted on the ESPN BOARD.
It's called insufficent due to the common errors posted by another of the same topic.
And by you placing Cashman's name to this you then Hold this paper and Brian Liable for Slander if this list or ANY NAME is incorrect.
That is why when Chip asked where you got it from you should have just said "sources"
Nudge, nobody thinks it's a conspiracy, it's just that the guy is so obviously conflicted. How can you ignore the fact that the guy is both a Red Sox fan and an employee of the organization? He has said multiple times that he intends to go back to the team after the investigation is concluded.
The will be nothing MLB can do with the results of this investigation. The CBA has no vehicle for disciplinary action for an external investigation. This is all strictly FYI. The report was designed to "get a handle" on the EXTENT of the problem. Not to implicate and punish. Remeber the players association gave ZERO cooperation with the panel.
Drew, you were SURPRISED by Dykstra?
You didn't think it was odd that he was a string bean with the Mets who suddenly became Lou Ferrigno with the Phillies?
Dave S,
Isnt any investigator a fan of some team?
I thought Big Papi would have been on the list
And possibly Manny
Not Pedro. He's always been a string bean.
Nothing about Schilling would surprise me, good or bad
I would have Understood manny better if he was on drugs that would have gave him a better excuse for the way he behaves
Sully,
Have you seem Lenny lately? He is still pumped.
