Hello, everyone. Ken Davidoff here. I'm moonlighting on the Yankees blog, away from my blog, to bring you this middle-of-the-night update on the Yankees' efforts to acquire Johan Santana from the Twins.
I spoke to Hank Steinbrenner at 12:45 Eastern Standard Time this morning, and while he was pessimistic about the Yankees' chances to get Santana, he said that talks with Minnesota were ongoing.
"Brian (Cashman) was giving them one more shot, and we'll see what happens, " Steinbrenner said. "It doesn’t look good to me."
Steinbrenner later added: "We'll sleep on it. Whatever it is, we'll discuss it one final time. But I'm beginning to think they just don’t want to trade him."
Steinbrenner made headlines, of course, by imposing a Monday deadline on the discussions with Minnesota. We'll bring you more updates as they come along.

KEN-
Greatly appreciate the late night update. Some of we "diehards" were burning the midnight oil in hopes that someone like yourself would clue us in. As Scarlett said, "Tomorrow is another day". Thanks again.
good hopefully Minny overplayed there hand and the Yanks do not mortgage the future...
Yes Santana is great but the cost in dollars and players is obscene.
then can sign him in a yr. for only $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$''
Santana will go nowhere.....
There seems to be a missing ingredient to these stories and that is the 72 hr window that the trading team gets to negotiate with the player, No team in their right mind will give any confidence to getting the player while that window is open, My point is that Minnesota may have agreed by the deadline and the negotiations are now occurring with Santana on a long-term contract.
Lee: You maybe right about an agreement and Santana in negoiations with a team but I don't think so. News of his trade would be broken in a heart beat in my opinion.
I believe its more of Minny being unable to pull the plug. They presented Santana for trade and now the bidders have spoken and Minny cannot understand Santana's value to themselves whether to trade or keep which we know Santana wants no part of them and their philosophy of running a team.
If Twins take inferior Sox deal then someone better investigate if Smith is taking money on the side from Sox because they're getting fleeced. Either he is a total incompetent or he's getting handsomely rewarded on the side.
Come on give me a break. Yanks deal is so much better than what is being reported that the Sox are offering.
Hey So it would seem that .Ian Kennedy will be the key factor determining whether the Yankees get past round one of the playoffs( If they get there at all) He'd better be. No wonder the Yankees let the best pitcher in the majors get away from them. How bout that!!
