Jeter update

Derek Jeter bruised his right pinkie finger on a bad hop while fielding ground balls during batting practice. He's fine. If he were not fine, they would not have let him play at all. As he said, "No problems."

Not the pinkey!

If Jeter goes down the team might be better off in the long run ... A Rod at short and Cano at 3B and someone else at 2B like Brandon Phillips.

We need to get away from the 1996 - 03 model. That's over.

The team is not not hungry. Lots of talent but you see what happens vs. the Angels, Detroit and the Indians in the playoffs ... we get annihilated cause we are not hungry and don't have a dominant arm other than Joba.

The team is old, slow, injury prone, can't hit and run, can't play small ball, foul off tough pitches bla bla bla ...

We need to get back to that. And fast.

Maybe it will happen this year. Or next when GI Joe gets rid of the dead wood, and Cashman is let go ...

Still a very talented team. As Diane wrote, we can still make the playoffs.

But for 1.2 billion in equity and the highest payroll for 8 straight years of no World Series ... is that enough?

And with the whole nation turning into a big Enron-Bear Stearns, can the Yanks afford the new stadium and to charge US$ 186,000 for a couple of prime box seats?

Ah yes, Rick's famous "Get-R-Done" argument touting Paul Byrd as a top level pitcher. Exactly what has Byrd gotten done? By my count he has exactly as many rings as I do. He had 1 good game in the post season - even with it he is 3-1 in 7 games with a 4.80 ERA. For the record, Carl Pavano is 2-0 with a 1.40 and a ring...so makes me wonder why you're not a bigger Pavano fan. I mean if we're talking about Getting-R-Done he certainly has the lead on Byrd.

haven't heard anyone ragging on Hughes this morning ??? He's for real boys and girls.

Speaking of Hughes, I heard Peter Gammons predict that Hughes will be in the running for the Cy Young Award this season and Joba will win Rookie of the Year. However, he also says the Yanks will miss the postseason.

Unlike the vast majority of Yankee fans, I’ve always liked Peter Gammons because he’s still one of the best baseball writers/insiders in the country. Red Sox fan or not, he’s in the Hall of Fame for a reason.

That said, if these player predictions on Hughes and Joba even come close to fruition - the Yanks might win the AL East by a half dozen games unless the rest of the team suffers a complete collapse from top to bottom.

I like Gammons, but he’s off his rocker on this one. But if it happens, the guy just might be Nostradamus.
