Notes from game

Phil Hughes ran into his first rough patch of the spring yesterday, getting knocked around in a start against the Reds which ended in a 7-7 tie.
Hughes, who had not allowed a hit in his first two official outings of the spring, gave up four earned runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. The right-hander allowed at least three Reds hitters to reach base in each of his innings.
“I just wasn’t getting ahead,” Hughes said. “It’s just one of those days you have to try and battle through.”
Hughes said it would be “pretty easy” to write off, and that he was just happy it didn’t happen in the regular season. Ironically, he said he had one of his best warmup sessions yet. But once he got into the game, he said: “My fastball wasn’t there and my curveball wasn’t there.”
Yankees manager Joe Girardi agreed with Hughes’s assessment, saying: “He struggled with the command of his fastball.”
The Yankees got much better results out of their relief corps than from Hughes. Jonathan Albaladejo struck out two in 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Girardi said of him: “Albaladejo threw the ball very well. He’s been pretty good. He’s got a good sinker.”
Edwar Ramirez fanned four in 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Dan Giese struck out two in two scoreless innings. Heath Phillips gave up two runs in 1/3 of an inning and Chris Britton allowed one earned run in an inning.
Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run homer. Jason Lane knocked in two runs. Brett Gardner (batting .368 this spring) was 1-for-2 with a walk, two steals, a run scored and an RBI.
“He’s an exciting player,” Girardi said. “He creates havoc.”

Kat: Any idea what pitches the most damage was done against Hughes? Clearly, he didn't have his best stuff today and it's funny that he had his best warm-up because I think Jim A and Nudge had an exchange recently about how when you feel your best, you pitch like crap and when you feel lousy, you come out with a gem, just a thing of baseball.

I started writing this for another thread, so it seems out of place here, but wanted to put it in a current spot, so here it is:

I'm actually pretty happy with the bullpen situation. I wouldn't be surprised if Farnsworth had his best season in NY this year. Now, I'm not saying he'll be very good, but in a contract year and with a manager he gets along with, I could see him pitching to a high 3 ERA. If all works out, he might even get us a draft pick as a free agent (we can dream, right?). Same thing with Hawkins. At the same time, I could see a case being made for one or both being traded at the deadline and still having Joba join the rotation. I know I'm being optimistic, but I think we have several young options that have looked pretty good in the spring and could have others.

A case could be made for Patterson and he'd have an even better case if he was a LHP as DRU likes to say. Sorry I didn't correct you earlier, but Patterson throws from the right side bro. I think that Traber will be the LHP (assuming the Yanks take one). With high hopes for the TJ guys (Melancon, Cox, & Sanchez) to contribute later in the year, there is a chance the Yanks could find just what they need internally. I think Ohlendorf, Britton, and Abalejedo can be solid bullpen pitchers as well, though I do think Abalejedo could afford to lose a few pounds ala Bruney. Not sure what will be done with Bruney and I don't think that we'll see much of Edwar (despite a solid performance today) or Veras now that JT isn't the manager. There is also some promise for Dave Robertson and Kevin Whelan even though neither were invited to ST. Clearly, some of these guys will fall flat on their faces, but with so many of them trying, some successfully, you have to be happy, right?

I'm leaving Horne and Marquez out of this. Despite some talk of Horne being converted to the bullpen, I think that would be a bad idea for the Yanks. Not sure about Jackson and White, but I don't see them in the equation either, hopefully they can prove me wrong.

Again I must say from the photo I saw online, Duncan's slide and spikes were up near the top of the Tampa 2B's thigh.

And he drew blood. For what?

Duncan was in the hospital not long ago with a blood clot.

So, I wonder, why act this way? Does he think that the Tampa player who ran into the Yankee catcher tried to break his wrist? On purpose? Is that remotely possible? That player said he was sorry. What more can he do? Can we know his heart? An eye for an eye always ends in shame, sadness and regret. Forgiveness and reconciliation are the better option. (Pope John Paul II, Nelson Mandela et cetera ...)

And Diane, in response to your cowardly, evil, and frighteningly ignorant attack on me, well ... Larry M, of Florida, met my girlfriend Patricia in person in Sarasota ... she's blonde with blue eyes and totally drop dead gorgeous. And I do mean gorgeous.

I know it is not Christian to say this, but I have doubt she makes YOU look like something that came out of her rear end. And on the inside you are probably even uglier.

If you need verification, talk to Larry M.

But I forgive you. You don't know me, so I am just filled with pity you for and I will pray that the Lord will open your heart and allow you to love others and not tear them down.

No hard feelings. But you should know that I have a great life and a great job. I am lucky to be tall and strong and healthy. I travel all over the world. Humbly to say, as a writer, over 300 of my articles have been published, and they have been read by untold millions to the four corners of the Earth. I had the best parents, grew up in a beautiful home ... I am so very blessed!

"God exaults the humble and resists the proud!"

Remember Diane, no one can be truly beautiful or ugly unless they are beautiful or ugly on the inside.

I am not beautiful because good-looking women think I am attractive, or becaue I have a pretty girlfriend, nor because I have a nice job, or because my students adore me.

I can only be beautiful if I love the Lord, and live a life that brings Him glory. A life that brings the Lord glory would only include serving others. (Saving the Hmong in Laos, caring for my parents every need and whim untill they passed away ... on an on).

Not that you would ever understand ...

But there is hope, even for people like you ...

I love you Diane. It is easy to love people who adore us. Harder to love those who attack us and bring us down, for no reason.

May the peace of Jesus Christ fill your heart, and bring you into His Kingdom.

Anthony

Hughes Your Daddy,

Why is THIS year the year that Farnsworth gets his act together?

Anthony,

You seem to read this blog selectively.

As I pointed out very shortly after the appearance of the message that has so upset you, it was posted by someone else using my name.

Duncan is a dolt. Plain and simple.
I thought so last year. Keep him in Triple A...at best.

Anthony just made an @ss out of himself yet again. How do you know what Diane looks like? The truth hurts doesn't it?

You forgot to mention one thing about your "girlfriend." She's a tranny! I guess if that's your thing, go for it. I just don't think your faith would approve.

Sully: First and foremost, I think he'll perform because it's a contract year. Second, he gets along with Girardi (he never got along with Torre). So, with two things working for him, I'm saying he lowers his ERA by about a half a run. That by no means is pulling it all together, but still would be his best year in NY.

Hi Diane,

Sorry ... no hard feelings!

I don't know who would be attacking me in YOUR name. It is CRAZY. I mean, what's wrong with people? Or this Anonymous person either. Very odd!

My life I think is pretty good. I have a very pretty girlfriend, Tricia, who Larry M met in Sarasota. She lives in Tampa/St. Pete. She's blonde and very pretty and such a sweetheart. Very humble and deeply religious. She acts like she is just some ole' gal. Larry really liked her! You would like her too. She is kind of shy ... but very kind and good with babies and animals ... and she puts up with me! We watch Carnivale on HBO or maybe Horatio Hornblower a lot of the time. I think we are pretty dull!

I have a great job, a big apartment, my own huge office, a great secretary who brings me lunch on a tray (chicken wings and Coca-Cola!) and great students who adore me ... (sometimes they drive me crazy but they are good kids!).

So I am happy with my life! It's not perfect. I miss my parents a lot. And there is a lot of stress of course. With this much money comes a lot of expections and it's not always smooth sailing!

I am very thankful for my blessings. I try to work hard and I am always preparing and grading and formulating this and that, beyond the meetings and staff development, running the school paper with my own crew, doing my photography bla bla bla ...

Again, no hard feelings!

Sorry if you did not make that post!

Ant Colony

Yes, I am sure Diane is very pretty.

And gracious and kind!

Hughes Your Daddy is the latest person seduced by Farnsworth...
The equivalent of the beautiful crazy woman

He's Nuke LaLoosh folks

Sully: Do you REALLY think that an ERA of say, 3.88 is out of the question for Farnsworth? Come on now.

I haven't given up on Farnsworth either. In addition to the reasons Hughes Your Daddy listed I would add that Eiland may help him with his control and consistency more than Guidry did. I love Gator but I don't think he's a great coach yet. I believe Farnsworth wants to play and he has more competition now than he's ever had in his baseball life. There are other reasons to wait and see before dismissing Farnsworth (or others like him). It's not seduction and I don't see Hughes Your Daddy as seduced, just logically considering that guys have good years and bad and for a guy that throws 100 mph there are good reasons to think that this might be a good one. Cashman is thinking along these lines and guys with no contract frequently have career years. It's their livelihood at stake after all. He may fail but it's put up or shut up time for him. They have him on the team so they might as well give him the ball and if he sucks, replace him. It's a simple game. Having a differing view is certainly understandable but mocking a differing view is not, but is much like some of the other childish, simple minded trollers (that I won't mention by name) that infect this blog.
