The Yankees lost 4-0 to the Phillies. Chien-Ming Wang gave up four earned runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. He had one tough inning in which he gave up four straight singles, all grounders, and an error kept the inning going longer than it should have. Still, manager Joe Girardi said it was the best he's looked.
I'd say Billy Traber's on the team at this point. He pitched 2/3 of an inning, and got out left-handed hitters Ryan Howard and Chase Utley. GM Brian Cashman said: "Obviously Traber's doing everything that he can."
Alex Rodriguez declined to give any more comment on the Jose Canseco allegations.
Brett Gardner left the game when a ball he fouled bounced up and hit him in the mouth, splitting his lower lip. I'm told it was bleeding pretty badly. He didn't lose a tooth, but was taken to a dentist for further evaluation and X-rays.
Here's the boxscore from today's game.

It's only spring training but why did they take Joba out like it was a real game? Shouldn't they have let him stay in to work out his problems? Strange approach when winning is not important but practice and development is.
I hate spring training injuries. Such a waste. Wouldn't it be nice if we could fast forward to Monday and let the real games begin? My only question is what will the pea brain with the post above me do to entertain himself once ST is over? What weird obssession will take over his simple child-like mind? That's one hell of a scary individual.
Who is injured on the team right now that we should be worried about? I know of Pettitte's back but that appears to be getting better. Is anyone else hurt?
Henn is going on the DL.
Gardner got hit in the mouth and was removed from the game too.
Henn is no big loss as he was probably not going to make the team and the DL is most likely a way of stashing him (he's out of minor league options) to see how Traber or other members of the bullpen fare in the early part of the season.
Gardner is fine and is headed to the minors anyway. The big club appears to be in good shape though.
Diane,
Yes, I know about the Ants and the Ant hill. The H is silent, it is my own lil' joke.
I am sorry that other person had to set you straight on the Ant hill thing. I wish my Spanish was perfect, but I have also had to learn a good deal of Afrikaans and Korean so I am still lagging behind in full fluency.

As this blog sinks lower. It is my hope that the regular season will bring back the life that it had under the supervision of Jim B.
I find the lack of threads provided to be the main reason for the downslide. There is much drifting from the Yankees or baseball subjects to awareness of world issues which is not the reason for the blog. This is my opinion because we are not at the ST facility or in the locker room to provide the threads.
Sounds like Traber made his case against Utley and Howard.
Yankees released Chris Woodward so it looks like the last battle is down to Ensberg vs. Ransom and since Girardi again opted to use Betemit at SS I think the final call will be how comfortable the brain trust is with him there. If they think Wilson can be a decent back up for Jeter then Ensberg will stick if not, I look for Ransom to make the club.
Wouldn't worry about Gardner or Henn, I'm sure both will be fine.
All in all I think it is safe to say that at this point Monday can't come soon enough.
Does anyone know if Ransom has minor league options? I'd like to see Ensberg make it but if his shoulder starts giving him problems again, Ransom would be a nice fall back option. If Woodward is gone, what does this mean for Nick Green? (I'm a poet and I didn't even know it!).
I'd do the research but I've got a bad cold and I'm just too lazy right now. Spring weather and the regular season can't get here soon enough. Although that brings a whole new set of problems (churning guts and all that).
I think Ensberg is a lock to make the team at this point because of the fact that the team placed him on the 40-man roster last week so they wouldn't lose him to free agency.
He's a good power bat off the bench who will end up starting against lefties.
Ransom has options left and he'll end up playing at Scranton to start the season.
I'm more worried about the pen. I'm fine with Traber, but the numbers game will end up taking Bruney (because of his lack of options and contract) over someone else who deserves it more (Patterson and Ohlendorf).
Viper,
I think the Yanks put him (Ensberg) on the roster to keep him from signing with the Rays, who were all over him. They may be trying to work out a trade of some sort? That's just a guess. Maybe they could package either Ensberg or Ransom and Bruney and get some decent prospects or something, who knows.
I'm surprised that we haven't heard any trade rumors involving the Yanks by now.
Both Ensberg and Ransom can be sent to AAA - they signed minor league deals so options aren't really an issue. Ensberg had a clause that allowed him to become a FA if he wasn't on the 40 by a certain date - but that doesn't have anything to do with whether or not he's on the big club.
The question I would have about Ensberg is how he would perform as a bench guy. I mean he is used to playing everyday and we've seen other players who perform a lot better when they are getting regular AB's as opposed to when they are playing in spot duty (Josh Phelps last year as an example). Ransom is at least used to playing in a utility role.
Hideki Matsui got married yesterday
What is all the fuss over 32 yr old Cody Ransom a career minor leaguer ?
He's totaled 140 MLB ABs w/ 3 HR 16 RBI with a sparkling .236 career AVE.
ruse -
There's no fuss exactly, but he had an impressive season last year for AAA and has been very good this spring. It would be nice to have someone in the Miguel Cairo/Luis Sojo role who can bring a little offense to the table.
Ruse,
What Chip said....oh and we're bored and starving for things to talk about.
Incidentally - the Mets may have just made the decision easier for Girardi - they released Ruben Gotay who would be the perfect fit. He's got a good stick and would be a terrific pinch runner option for the Yankees. He's not going to dazzle anyone with the leather, but he and Ransom are about on par.
Jim - could be worse - we could be Met fans trying to figure out why Fernando Tatis got a roster spot and why the Mets are looking at Claudio Vargas as their 5th starter.
Chip,
I heard about Tatis, stepped off a plane and got a roster spot.
I was surprised the Mets put Gotay on waivers, I thought they loved that guy.
When in doubt out of spring training managers tend to bring the veteran up from Florida
Ruben Gotay couldn't catch a flu in Hong Kong. He has been a career disappointer who had a good month last year. He was shopped many times without much interest. He was not released but placed on waivers, perhaps to see if any interest has developed for him. He is at best a bench player who you can't put in the field. Not much value in someone like that. But he is gold glove compared to Cano.
Vargas is not being considered for the fifth starter. It was already announced to be El Duque in he proves he worked out his delivery problems or Pelfrey. Vargas is not nor ever was a consideration. Tatis is a better bench option than any player on this team. Keep your opinions to the junior circuit. You know nothing about the Big Boys league.
GYFS,
I hope the Mets aren't counting on El Duque' too much, it appears he may be at the end of the road. At 42 (or 46, depends on who you ask), his body is breaking down and his velocity is way down. It may be time for the Mets to just give Pelfrey the spot and let him pitch.
I love El Duque' but I fear his bag of tricks may finally be empty.
Jimbo,
I hope they aren't either. I wouldn't miss Duque at all. Let him get his bunion removed and be done with it. Pelfrey can be a .500 pitcher and with the other four thats more than enough.
You guys can have Gotay if you want though. Its OK with me.
GYFS,
I'll take a pass on Gotay, but thanks anyway. Duque' could have that bunion removed and sent to Cooperstown as the most famous bunion in MLB history.
